- "Pearl" is delightfully, deliriously deranged -- but also a little bit heartbreaking. Alonso and Christy have a review of this prequel to the horror movie "X," featuring a deeply committed lead performance from Mia Goth. Directed by Ti West, written by West and Goth. Co-starring David Corenswet and Emma Jenkins-Purro.

Man I just love the fact that we are getting an original horror trilogy in just over 12 months😁
Love A24, Ti west and Mia goth for making this happen
So cool.
I got to see both X and Pearl at the Alamo Drafthouse in Charlottesville last night. I loved every minute of both movies. Mia Goth needs recognition at all awards ceremonies this coming season. Her monologue near the end and the last shot of Pearl have stuck with me all day. A true tour de force
That sounds like a blast. Did they play Pearl first and then X? She is committed to that last shot!
I saw this last night and was blown away! Fun and heartbreaking. Mia Goth is a revelation. Best performance of the year. She deserves the Oscar!!!
If only!
@@BreakfastAllDay this movie needs to be a surprise hit in order to get Oscar recognition. They seem to care more for movies about movies and don't care for horror and slasher movies unless they make a big splash and are trendy or make a huge cultural and cinematic impact like Get Out!
I just saw this movie tonight. Now this was a great horror movie! Mia Goth is such a great actress., and I never fully realized it until this movie. Honestly, I would say this performance is on par with Kathy Bates in Misery. They both walk a fine line, and it's kind of breathtaking. Goth has fun with it, but also there are some real pathos there. She is genuinely frightening. And there's so much style and visual fun to be had with this movie, too - all the movie references! And the tone of this movie is so spot on. It plays like pure melodrama, with just the right touch of satire, just the right touch of camp. But not enough to destroy the dramatic consistency of the story. I loved it. I thought it was pretty great. And that final shot held through the credits. Wow.
Great comparison to Kathy Bates! And yes, she is committed to that shot.
Mia Goth's performance in this was tremendous. I liked it even more than Toni Collette's performance in Hereditary. Sadly since this is a horror movie the Academy won't recognize her performance at all
Both go to exciting, extreme places.
This movie needs to be a hit with critics and everyone buzzing about it FOR MONTHS the way they did for Everything everywhere all at once and Get out! This movie needs to be a decent hit at least!
That table monologue that she does is an Oscar winning performance all on its own that can be a short film just like the beginning of Inglourious bastards it was just so much so overwhelming
She's amazing.
Really enjoyed this one, I think its even better than X. Mia Goth is a force of nature.
She is indeed!
I read a review that said Mia Goth played Pearl as if she was channeling Shelly Duvall playing Norman Bates. Yes!! During the third act monologue, I was sitting in the theater thinking, "This is really reminding me of Shelly Duvall." I'm glad I'm not the only one who made that connection. I also felt that Pearl's accent and relationship with her controlling mother was referencing DePalma's Carrie: "Mother, I'm going to the dance/audition and you can't stop me."
Ha, that's an incredible description!
So glad u mentioned Shelly Duvall. I was also aware of how much Mia’s performance tapped into Duvall’s acting persona. Never heard anyone mention that till now.
X was fun, looking forward to this. thanks for reviewing it
Thanks for watching!
Glad you two enjoyed it, can't wait to go see it.
From the trailer, I already liked seeing that pitchfork and the alligator family were there back in the day 😭.
Hope you enjoy it!
I just saw this and it would have been my film of the year, last year. Feels like Norman Bates became a woman and fell out of the sky onto a farm. BTW - I think the opening credits scenes are worthy of serious study. Loved your review thx Rob
Thanks Rob!
Going Sunday afternoon and am so stoked for this.
Love you guys. You guys and Richard roeper are my go to critics
This film's existence also retroactively makes X a better movie
Agreed. And X was already really good.
I thought Mia should be nominated for an Academy award.
She's incredible! Thanks Pam.
This movie was so good and a great companion to X but not necessary to enjoy Pearl. Mia was great and can’t want for Maxxxine to come out. Do you know when that is going to come out?
They're just shooting it now! They recently put out a call for extras.
Anyone catch the nod to Fargo near the end?
I might watch this before watching "X" since I haven't seen it yet, so it won't be a prequel for me. Speaking of A24, I'm curious about "Close", the trailer looks devastating. No idea when it's being released.
Let us know how you like them!
This movie is really a character study of Pearl with horror/slasher elements attached.
Despite being a one trick pony playing the exact same *Jack Nicholson's touched wife in The Shinning* esque type character in every movie that she's in, Mia Goths performance as Pearl is just off the freakin' Richter scale mind-blowing phenomenal, I mean shove an Oscar into her hand already. To give you some idea, Mia Goths performance is right up there with Kathy Bates in Misery just jaw-dropping throughout. The way Mia Goth played this touched a few sandwiches short of a picknick character without it being a parody performance getting us the audience to truly believe her dillusionality just like Toni Collette as Muriel in Muriel's Wedding just has to be seen to be believed. This movie totally hinges on Mia Goths performance where we the audience are like How on earth did she deliver that unnerving too good for comfort insanely method performance? Seriously Mia Goths performance has to be seen to be believed! And if like me you relish in top notch astonishing method performances on the big screen where the actor/actress removes their celebrity mask and totally embodies the character, do not miss Mia Goths performance as Pearl in the cinema.
I really enjoyed pearl as well, can’t wait for maxxxine
Woo hoo!
without spoilers the last shot of this film is one of the most chilling and in a twisted way funny last shots i have seen in sometime!!! mia goth is just terrific!!!
Totally.
This definitely has the potential to be Ti West's magnum opus. I always thought that he was the sort of unsung hero of modern horror, ever since Innkeepers and The House of the Devil. Not So much The Sacrament, though it had promise. His movies have always been strong and original and very film literate. So much better a director than Eli Roth. He’s like the Tarantino of horror. What Roth lacks the skill and discipline as an filmmaker to be, let him forgive me for saying so. This one, I think, is Ti West’s best movie. And this trilogy has potential to be something even deeper. Remember, we started with a movie about porn stars and Puritanical, murderous repression. And generational and cultural schisms. And race and class. Now this one comes through with history and feminism (in a strange way), and cinema... the movies... and the mid-west, immigrants, poverty, sex, and war, and trauma, mental illness, yearning, hopes and dreams...tragedy, disappointment, rot... it's all there. This movie is broader and deeper than it even first seems. I'm very, very interested to see Maxine.
I liked X ok, but Pearl is my favorite movie of the year. I was totally hooked and I think Mia Goth deserves an Oscar for her performance.
She's incredible.
Just on the way home from watching Pearl. She really deserves AT LEAST an Oscar nomination for this. I loved Michelle Yeoh in EEATO but this is hands down the best female leading performance I have seen all year for sure! Like there ARE VERY FEW ACTORS 28 or younger and even some Hollywood stars twice her age who can pull that off and she's so shockingly stellar in such a complex difficult role to pull off! Can't believe Hollywood didn't give her a role and opportunity like this much earlier. She deserves to be in that best leading actress category even though the hype and Oscar frontrunner buzz is around Blanchett for TAR.
It's a stunning performance, for sure.
noone expected any Oscar buzz for Everything everywhere all at once immediately when it came out. It's only when the audience and critics got behind it and buzzed about it for months and it became a shocking surprise hit did the Oscar talks including nominations for best original Screenplay and Michelle yeoh materialize. I know the Academy doesn't necessarily like movies like Pearl but wish they would just make an exception for Mia Goth's performance. Like she completely disappeared into Pearl where you can't see Mia Goth anywhere and she didn't falter in a single scene. Whereas with Margot Robbie in Babylon, one can still see glimpses of Margot Robbie putting on a performance or playing the 1920s actress and glimpses of her past performances. And empire of light has been getting mixed reviews with some saying even though Olivia Coleman is very good, this is far from her career best. If they care about keeping the competition interesting and stiff, would like to see her name in that category up there with Blanchett for TAR, michelle Yeoh for everything everywhere all at once and danielle deadwyler for Till.
@@nikitamohanan2124 It would be very exciting!
@@BreakfastAllDay hearing great things about Anna Kendrick's performance too in Alice darling after the TIFF screening with some calling it her career best. I think I am more interested and intrigued by Pearl and Alice Darling as opposed to stuff like TAR, babylon and empire of light because they are not Oscar baity movies and feel more relatable and understandable but just as cinematic and strong and amongst the best performances I have seen all year by merit alone. I am just hoping the Oscars can redeem themselves at least a little bit from last year and at least consider these worthy films and performances as well. I hope Pearl does well or is modest hit to improve Mia's oscar chances.
@@nikitamohanan2124 We will review them all!
I am loving Mia Goth! I kinda want her to star in a bio pic about Shelley Duvall.
Ooohhh that's an interesting idea.
I loved X , can"t wait to go watch Pearl, i couldn't believe that there is already another movie about Maxeene coming next year i presume , such a great idea, Mr West and Ms Goth had a great idea § I hope that for Maxeene they will be able to get back Ms Snow cos i love her in every performance , especially on X..
It's all so fun. And they're all so distinct.
Mia Goth has been around for at least a decade in supporting roles in films like Suspiria and Emma. Glad to see Ti West has finally given her a breakout, starring role where she can really shine.
She can do it all!
It would be kind of lame not to see X after or even if you can before Pearl even if your not a necessarily a horror fan. This series of films is one of a kind and very refreshing to see during this somewhat dark period of generic commercial filmmaking watered down by imposing social justice criticism. I'm very excited to see Pearl and I think it's great how Mia Goth is dedicated so much to this whole project being a screenwriter and star. That's something you rarely see from the featured onscreen talent. From Pearl's trailer it kind of gives you a peak into the darkest recesses of Goth's mind. Her creative involvement on the second film sort of also makes you wonder without doing research, the parameters, relationship wise between her and Ti West. But I don't want to speculate. Who knew that this young nymphet like actress from A Cure For Wellness, almost a decade ago I think, would return as such a force. Even if it's kind of what normies would think about as a small indie horror film. Still for the horror genre these films are kind of revolutionary ambition wise. It's just great that even in these days of strong merited cynicism against Hollywood and obvious creative bankruptcy scripts ike this are being written. I realize movies like Pearl and X don't exactly have mainstream appeal .But I think they will grow to over the years to be have huge cult followings even if Maxxine doesn't turn that great. But I can't wait to see that trailer!
She's really good in Suspiria too.
4:53 ...I guess Christmas villians need the ti west treatment
Good idea!
Peter Lorre gives a monster's monologue in M, the best ever.
Ooohhh ...
20K is a bit ambitious before the end of the year but still I like the goal but after this movie this movie was sick and horrific and the best way possible
Just saw this movie and it was amazing. Mia Goth deserves a freakin' Oscar nomination for this (which sadly she most likely won't get).
It's an exciting idea!
@@BreakfastAllDay It would be really nice, but I wouldn't get my hopes up.
I just caught up with this film and was shocked at how good it was. The world should've made a bigger deal out of this movie than it did. I think the film came out at a time when it couldn't be as appreciated as it should have been. Fans were too wrapped up in superhero movies, and critics and award committees only liked to fawn over boring arthouse cinema. There was a time when Pearl would have been celebrated, and it would be considered a classic today, or at least a cult favorite. Pearl reminded me of classics like Carrie and Psycho. Mia Goth got robbed of an Oscar nomination. Too bad Academy members won't look outside their selected bubbles.
A lot of critics groups loved this movie! We definitely did in LA. Mia Goth was indeed robbed. Glad you caught up with it.
You gave it a great score and I'm glad you did! @@BreakfastAllDay
Well I have to say that this is a good movie. Not as great as X but it does pace its story well and has a great turn from Mia Goth. Bringing up a chilling end. If only the story had more depth like X.
But it lacks the substance which X had which really build up a story from scratch and led it to the finish. Pearl does not build up its story like X but starts from near the end to take it to conclusion. Still like X, the setting and pacing is good.
I give this a 7. Uses its limited narrative very effectively.
Definitely. Thanks, Brajesh.
I never got the vibe that this character was this unhinged, was I missing something from X? It almost seems like a movie completely disconnected from that film despite it being a prequel. I will admit I've only seen the trailer but I don't see the through line.
Watch it and see!
5:27 bye Nick
He has places to be!
While I had seen X and know it is probable wrong of me I found myself rooting for her.
Hard not to!
How did y’all review pearl before woman king?!?!
We're reviewing The Woman King on Tuesday, along with Goodnight Mommy! Sept. 16 was such a jam-packed day that we're spreading them out. Thanks for asking.
The movie Pearl is a good movie but not a horror movie imo 😔. No spoilers I promise. Just know is about un diagnosed mental illness, lack of love, feeling stuck in life, and loneliness with very few kills. Mia Goth's acting is great! Girl sold it. I guess i was expecting a serial killer not just the beginning of one. 🍒
She's awesome.
That’s a horror movie my guy
What would you call it? A drama? lol
@@user-mf5um8dz7f no a character study.
@@aaronsanders6162 You know thinking back on it, you're right. I guess it depends on what point of view we're looking at. Horror movie are supposed to make you feel uncomfortable or at time make you want to look away and this movie did that. If you see/ hear her monolog with out seeing or knowing about the movie, (her character) many of us can relate to some degree on what she is saying. And that is scary when we start relating or sympathizing with the villan. Like she said (paraphrasing) "there's something missing in me that everyone else has but me". I would say empathy, sympathy, impulse control, regulating emotions among other thing. A psychopath. Yeah its horror.
Mia Goth is one of best actress where she has been all those time are casting peoples are so stupid, she is next Sissy Spacek yes and Sissy is def in top 5 Hollywood actress ever without any doubt
Still have a few months of movies to go, but nobody will give a better performance this year than Mia Goth.
She just goes for it.
Critics are raving about Cate Blanchett in the Oscar baity TAR and Olivia Coleman in another Oscar baity Empire of light which celebrate movies and arts and everything the Academy has a hard on for! The Oscars don't like slasher horror films like this. It just sucks!
I really didn't love "X." The build was OK, but the horror was pretty underwhelming. I wonder if this is sufficiently different for me to like it?
It's extremely different. Check it out!
I think Pearl is way better than X, but it also makes X better somehow.
I’d give at a 4/5. Mia Goth is GRRREAT. Elevator Pitch: “Wizard of Oz” meets “Joker”. Cool that A24 has a franchise now
That's good!
We know the academy is to cowardly to nominate her
They snubbed Mia Goth on best actress
Would have been amazing to see her in there. So deserving.
Alonzo should never question Christy. We are here for her and he gets a weekly invitation. So take a seat boy.
