#pearl #tiwest #a24 - Krátké a kreslené filmy
Mia Goths monologue was heart wrenching. I’ve never felt so sympathetic for a killer
And so terrified of her shortly after 😮
It was so incredibly BORING. Watch Resurrection 2022 and watch a real monologue.
Same here Pearl is such a tragic villain.
@@anthonycastillo8055 yes that too.
@@pegacorn13 u dont know what good story and entertainment is then 😭 u definitely haven’t seen x prior to pearl
This movie was like a female Norman Bates origin story with the setting and backdrop of the wizard of oz. Mia Goth was outstanding in it. That monologue commands the audience’s attention!
Pearl was fantastic. Saw it last night, I was actually blown away. Liked X, LOVED this thing. Everything about it worked for me, it balanced humor and genuine sadness so well.
Its an incredibly powerful piece.
To me, this movie is about lost dreams and the inability to sublimate your powers in a healthy fashion.
Her audition scene is unbelievably tragic. I 100% believed that she needed the role. Pearl is an artist who was crushed by death, disease and neglect.
Something about the death and destruction she causes felt like escapist fantasy, rather than literal murderous depravity caused by a subhuman monster(although she is those things, too)
And of course this couldn't have worked were it not for Mia Goth's work here. Maybe she could get nominated for an Oscar or something.
Mia Goth gave the best performance of the year as far as an actress goes. So well done.
I’m so hyped about X and maXXXine, there’s just something so drawing about Mia Goth she really has a similar presence to Shelly Duvall in The Shining. Really excited to be living in a time where she is around.
same i look forward to Maxxine.
There is a third movie in the X world coming. It's set in the 80s. Ti West may be doing the nostalgia stylist thing, but he's quite good at it. His earlier movies 'The Innkeepers' & 'The House of the Devil' are the keepers though. The first hour of 'House' is probably my favorite horror of the last 20 years.
X wasn't that compelling, to begin with.
Its called maXXXine
Looks like it is set in the 1920s.
The ending shot reminded me of Midsummer's but even more sinister. And this movie reminded me of the Tales From The Crypt episode with Patricia Arquette with the scarecrow and nagging mother.
The longer it went on, the colder I felt. Just… it was so uncomfortable and raw and tragic
I always felt like the ending to Midsommar wouldve been stronger had the look on her face had more ambiguity and nuance to it
Watched yesterday, great performance by Mia, disturbing at times but the most interesting thing about it is that I completely understand Pearl's behavior.
Really glad I discovered you today. Thank you for your in depth analyses and I really hope to see your channel grow exponentially. I agree 100% with your sentiments on X. I found Pearl to be mostly perfect but again, I completely understand and appreciate your analysis of this one.
You are my favourite online film reviewer. Even ( on the rare occasion) when I don't agree with your opinions, I totally get your views, which are always well considered.
Wish these indie films would get noticed more, but sometimes I don't. Loved the technicolor!
Will see this this weekend as just released in the UK, getting great reviews!
This review was so beautiful. You went so in depth and really broke down the film in an analytical way. I agreed with everything you said. Cant wait for Maxxxine. There was a end credits scene showing the Hollyowood sign in LA but instead of Hollywood it says Maxxxine.
Really like your reviews, keep on making these videos please!
Please review Barbarian
I thought it was awesome, but some people hate it so it’s one of those films where I’m always curious to hear people’s thoughts on it
Haven't seen the movie, planning this weekend or next weekend. Looking forward to it! I hope there's good a$$ details. It's A24 has to be good.
Wasn’t a big fan of X, and a lot of the 2022 horror we’ve been getting.. but I’m looking forward to this one. X failed with the older Pearl for me so this bright colored origin looks better.
Another one you can try is Barbarian in horror. Its great and i am looking forward to Pearl too. It looked lot better than X which i wasn't a fan too.
@@amy_yoshikawa haha I saw Barbarian and didn’t like it either :( loved the first part with Bill Skarsgaard but as it progressed I found the mother thing laughably silly
@@gregg3744 it's trying to be cheesy campy which i didn't mind but i can understand some people might be turn off by it lol.
@@gregg3744 Pearl was way better than X. Barbarian wasn’t that good either
Great review. So does that mean that when Pearl, as an old woman, sees the Mia Goth character in X, she thinks "She looks exactly like I did when younger?"
I don't think it's meant to be taken that literally. The point seems to moreso be that their stories mirror each other significantly enough that old Pearl sees/longs for so much of herself in young Maxine
I thought X was fine, but I’m still excited for this one. Great review. I’ll be seeing Moonage Daydream instead this weekend but I still have some interest in seeing this. The way you describe it sounds like I’ll get a kick out of it.
Well what did you think?
Interesting movie, was looking for something to watch. Awesome review as usual!
You definitely need to review Eileen. I loved it, I want to read the novel. I recommend Zone Of Interest novel too.
I think "maxxxine" will be the best of the three as it's set in the 80's
Great movie. Great review. I agree with everything you said except I didn't notice any real flaws watching it. Just engaged 100% and the monologue at the end brought it all together in a terrifying way. So much truth in it
I had the exact same thought about the monologue and how many different emotions I'm seeing displayed in front of me.
So what should be watched first? X or Pearl?
Kind of like with unbreakable and Split. I feel like watching unbreakable first makes split a much more entertaining and smooth viewing.
Granted of course it helps not knowing the two are in the same universe going into the movie only to be shocked after the movie.
I’m curious on this as well
Always watch in release order.
That's the way they're meant to be seen.
Pearl pushing the girl off the pier to be eaten by alligator in X would’ve been way more impactful if Pearl was released first
huh? Pearl is the prequel to X, why would you watch Pearl first? You seem confused about something. Imo Pearl works fine w/o seeing X, but why watch it first? To follow the fictional chronology in a linear fashion? lol that's dumb as shit
That monologue, the long takes and the kills are what did it for me. I do recognize the flaws, but this is an origin story I didn’t grow tired of. I’m usually not a fan of origin stories, but I love this one.
Bravo 👏👏
I believe Pearl & X would've made a interesting double feature idea.
Similar to Grindhouse. Featuring Tarantino & Rodriguez. Would you say Mia Goth is Oscar worthy in her menacing role?
Sadly the Oscars are not going to nominate that.
@@mabusestestament either she must get raped in a scene, play a lead role as some historical figure or lastly be some racist character discovering kindness for any type of Oscar considerations
Excellent points you make.
Great review
Maggie could you review Barbarian ? I personally thought it was fantastic.
Felt like the wicked witch of the West origin story. She deserved an Oscar. Wow
thought it worked better at what it was trying to do than X did. And gave Mia Goth a big time performance movie.
😊great review
I only just returned from the theatrical screening of 'Pearl,' and here was your review, loyally awaiting me! Hahaha. I won't argue against the filmcraft-related qualities of this film, or Mia Goth's acting. However, I was kind of bedraggled by what I found to be repetitious thematic hearkenings back to 'What Ever Happened To Baby Jane?' Some of that might have been the '50s era pastiche, but I'd say it has more to do with the narrative elements, and, possibly, more so, the fact that Mia frequently seems to be channeling Bette Davis' performance, from 'Jane'--like, PROFOUNDLY. I agree that she and Sissy Spacek have--for lack of a better term--"strangeness" in their respective physicalities, but looks don't amount much to me, in performances. I'm more preoccupied by the emotional movement behind the looks, and Spacek never occurred to me, during this film. On the other hand, Goth's performance almost rang as a Davis TRIBUTE, throughout much of 'Pearl.' Either/or, I thought Goth's emotional quiver was MUCH-expanded, since 'X.'
My takeaway nag: WHY is the husband okay with the homicides...? Where was the explanation? Alas...!
I thought in some scenes like when she was talking to the guy who worked at the theatre in the alleyway she was giving major Shelley Duvall energy, like in her facial expressions. Mia and Shelley have long been compared for looking similar but she also was able to give off those types of expressions also. She loves Shelley and i also can see what your saying about Bette Davis. I loved this movie. Also about the husband... in my head i was thinking maybe hes very mentally affected by the war and seeing all that carnage that it makes him numb to it? Theres many stories of veterans turning into serial killers after the war so i don't see why that could not of happened to Howard.
@@xenduvall I've noticed that, on some occasions, the not-terribly-rare critical affect of "a Shelley Duvall type" is employed in a seemingly non-congratulatory manner, to mean "a physically thin woman who comes across as histrionic." That having been said, I also see the descriptive value in the comparison, when not meant to be personally/superficially invective, and I can absolutely understand your observation of said similarity, here. (I experienced the same reaction, upon first seeing 'Starry Eyes'; I actually remarked to my friend, while watching said movie, "Man, if they ever need a Shelley Duvall stand-in for a reboot of 'The Shining,' [Alex Essoe] would MURDER it!" Someone must've been listening.)
My thing, regarding the husband: He seemed unequivocally repulsed, upon walking in on the "dinner scene," during his return home. In fact, the film seemed to be teasing an olde-timey [read: serialized-era] emotional cliffhanger, in the moment. That having been said: Anything's possible. You might absolutely be correct. I just wish the tiniest bit more screen-time had been invested in sussing out said critical moment, and a little bit less time, maybe, on the very repetitive "Somewhere Over The Rainbow"-type emotional gesticulating that served as the basis of Pearl's primary motivation. Just a personal preference...
I'm intrigued, X wasn't perfect but it was fun. The Pearl character is worth exploring.
That monologue...man.
ThanksMuch!
Thanks :)
Mia goth killed it. Literally 💀🪓
Maxxxine is the third movie coming soon with Mia Goth where she lived at the end of X. Post credit scene showed its in 1985. 10 or 15 years after X. Maxine wanted to be a star & i think thats where Ti West will go with it
Well said!
You hit the nail on the head here. The movie was a bit of a mixed bag, Mia Goth’s performance was great but I didn’t particularly enjoy the movie.
What was the deal with Pearl bathing nude in front of her father, can anyone shine some light?
Pearl is simply a psychopath (born). Possibly a sociopath (made). With pathological narcissistic traits. She lived not understanding fear. That is explicitly spelled out in the movie. She only understands rage, jealousy, and shame (embarrassment as the object of an outsiders disapproval) but not guilt (an inner conscience).
Think of her as a female Patrick Bateman and it helps understand the logic of her twisted behavior.
She will exhibit transgressive behavior so long as she does not feel externally judged as “bad”.
Now review our love life
I like that the girls pearls story seems realistics,it could happen in real life bewteen family.is not A Happy ending movie or it doesn show a person with a happy life always,it shows a situation that might happen in real life,an issue that other people might relate to.somewhere in the world.thats what I liked about it,the story
Hope you see Indian movie Sita Ramam (Telugu language) Imdb 8.5. Available in Amazon Prime. Love musical
You need to watch The Love Witch (2016) on Tubi. It genuinely looks like it was made in the 1960s! Anne Biller made a similar film to it called Viva (2007).
I'm watching an interview with the actress, Samantha Robinson, who stars in The Love Witch talking about her favorite films. She's born 1991 but a lot of her favorite films are ones I've never seen or heard of! She has old films from like 1961. This woman is a true artist and movie buff.
The Love Witch is one the best low-budget films I've ever seen. I thought it was going to be another cheesy B-movie with the 60s vibes being a gimmick. It's actually really well made. Even the acting is decent for the budget.
The Love Witch is 1000x's better than Pearl.
Yeah, Love Witch is dope
it's a mediocre film that hides behind its aesthetic. without it, itd be a boring flat story with a subpar cast; complete waste of time and way too long
Ur a great commentator
I will say that I'm sure I will have zero interest in this movie, but I like your stuff here. Very good stuff you do.
'Pearl' is absolutely the better film. Mia Goth tore it up at the end. That performance left me with goosebumps; it made me see 'X' in a whole new light and I think it's brilliant. When Pearl welcomes home her love and the credits roll? Ugggg - Amazing performance.
Holy shit you saw Pearl already
There's no release date for Pearl still isn't announced smh in the uk
Annoying that I only heard about X months after it came out, literally no advertising about it here in the UK, at least from what I saw.
I felt it was kinda depressing. Mia is a good actress. I left feeling disappointed. I liked X much better.
Is X required viewing before Pearl? I've seen X, but if I go with friends who haven't.
Heard it’s not a requirement at all
@@cinemasprite Thanks!
This movie was nice to look at for about half of its runtime so suppose it has that going for it. After that I was bored out of my skull and it took everything I had not to walk out of the theater. After just having seen Resurrection 2022, I saw the power of a monologue and this one pales in comparison. I honestly don't get the love for this film.
Man, I only recently got to watch X - enjoyed it well enough, and am always happy to see a new Ti West flick. However, I only yesterday heard of PEARL and MaXXXine as the follow ups to X, and those two really have me excited, can't wait to see what West does with this trilogy. Also, I have to agree with Mia Goth being a nigh perfect casting for these type of films. If there ever was a film I actually liked, where I would still make a recast I'd switch out Mia Wasikowska with Mia Goth in Stoker. Wasikowska was fine in the film, but I always thought Goth would've nailed it.
Absolutely loved this film
To me the kill in the farm with the pitchfork is the best horror kill we’ve had since Mandy (2018)
the duck?
This might be too smart for me.
I think they should have put Pearl out first then X and I know why they didn’t but X had so many shock value moments that this movie couldn’t match but if Pearl was put out first the tension of what the adult film star crew was getting into would have been more nerve racking.
Loved it
Magic realism.
😎🙏💯
🙏🙏🙏
10:02 to me the scarecrow represented how Pearl objectified others; as vehicles for sexual pleasure or means to achieve stardom
Oh buhuu, buhuu it's buhuu and buhuu and less buhuu and more buhuu and often buhuu with much more buhuu than buhuu if less buhuu if the buhuu was more buhuu than buhhuu
You know, there's such a thing as being over critical.
Boy, we disagree on this one. I just caught up with this film and was shocked at how good it was. The world should've made a bigger deal out of this movie than it did. I think the film came out at a time when it couldn't be as appreciated as it should have been. Fans were too wrapped up in superhero movies, and critics and award committees only liked to fawn over boring arthouse cinema. There was a time when Pearl would have been celebrated, and it would be considered a classic today, or at least a cult favorite. Pearl reminded me of classics like Carrie and Psycho. Mia Goth got robbed of an Oscar nomination. Too bad Academy members won't look outside their selected bubbles.
I just got home. Took some 2cb and ketamine with a friend, popped in Pearl. 😲 Oh MY G-D! 😄 Mind blown. Simply incredible. Wow. Can't wait to rewatch along with x again. See now I feel like I have way too much hype going into this third film. Pearl was so trippy in such a creepy way and very emotional too. All the things she says in the video, think she is being a little harsh like I thought it was damn near flawless
Yeah, I liked the movie but nowhere near as much as I did X. Knowing he wrote it in a couple of weeks during lockdown totally makes sense cause the writing does feel half baked, a bit like a first draft. Very meandering and a little aimless and not in a way that I sometimes enjoy.
All that said, I think it's 100% worth a watch for Mia Goth. An absolute powerhouse of a performer. Glad you mentioned the Shelley Duval thing cause that's exactly how I explained it to the people I saw the movie with. I hope this year is what breaks her into the mainstream cause she deserves ALL the work. Fantastic actor!
Brilliant movie.
Yay! DFC does it again! Her reviews are the absolute best. I might ask her to do a portrait of my Ukrainian friend.
Mia Goth is a powerhouse
I get Shelley Duvall more than Spacek.
Thought it was even better then X
Think horrors starting to get really lost in pastiche, the whole that looks like lynch or argento is becoming a tool now. Films like 'censor' & 'us' just seem get lost in their own atmosphere.
I didn't feel any empathy for Pearl. Nor can I say I was moved by the film. I did enjoy it as a campy romp though. 3/5
Great review... but.. please, try not to overuse word "pastiche" (it's like when some kind of hipster wants to sound like a true cinephile.. But, you are cinephile. You dont need overuse it ) :)
I wholeheartedly disagree that it didn't "sink its teeth" into any of its themes: it didn't need to. And the reason it didn't need to is because it was much more intimate than that. It's just a really thorough character study. Her arc is where its attention is, what its teeth are latched onto. Her monologue at the end was everything.
Like you, I found X lacking (and still kinda do) but this enriched it. Either movie saying anything about the film industry or exploitation is so woefully uninteresting to me. But as character pieces they're great. Pearl is about giving up on your dreams, living with what you have, and then X is about the regret after. And that's why I didn't need its teeth to be anywhere meta: Pearl is an excellent character and she's fleshed out so completely.
"I wholeheartedly disagree that it didn't "sink its teeth" into any of its themes: it didn't need to" Well you arent really disagreeing are you? You're not even stating it did sink its teeth into its themes, simply that it didnt need to. Which are different statements.
@@lockekappa500 you're right, I misspoke/communicated my thought insufficiently. I was trying to say that I disagree with her entire notion, from a philosophical standpoint.
Mia Goth was adorable in *'EMMA'* :

Pls review Shane Dawson’s movie not cool… it’d worse than cats… it makes you hate the world and all of humanity and I’m so so shrooms to hear your review on a film like that. Bc you are so articulated with your words and review and I wanna hear and extremely intelligent review (as all of yours are) on a ridiculously BAD movie. Bad doesn’t even do if justice. It’s worst than Manos: Hands of Fate. It’s not a funny bad movie like Troll 2
Spielberg and Lucas ruined cinema in the 70s/80s, now we are stuck Marvel pablum. Quentin Tarantino further ruined it by making pastiche acceptable and now we’re stuck with movies that are like other movies. Cinema is dead. This film was a complete bore. Yes, Mia Goth is a stand out and was really great in Emma, but man, this movie was just plain awful.
Pearl is a waaaay better movie than X
dont watch this film, save yourself, this movie will fuk up your mind, she kills all for no reasons. the location didnt look like florida where crocs live, more looked like kansas where there are no crocs are. probably louisiana with corn fields not swamps. dont make this kind of movies and if you need to make it, then make it sci-fi to ease on your mind. youtuber deepfocus is better than ANY critics, the choices of her vocabularies are from upper levels like Ph.D and above. but to me, it is easier for me to understand "this is stupid because of this reason"... type kind of things
i am not sure if the mother was a german actor, mother didnt gutturize some words well, but fluent
Pearl is soo much better than X
Didn't like X is trash I saw trailer Pearl I'll wait for blu-ray trailer looks weak
I recently subscribed and enjoy your videos partly because you are a generation younger than me, so many of the movies that influenced your youth I saw only later in life. They did not impact my early development and view of the world. For example, I was in high school when Star Wars came out. You growing up with a VCR also meant you could rewatch movies at will and soak up more details. I had much less clear memories of individual movies, many of which I saw on a black and white TV.
I am not a big fan of horror, so it is a little embarrassing to write that my attention quickly switched from learning about PEARL to worrying that your dress might fall off! (FWIW, my Wife agreed about the dress). My brain was instantly conflicted, you see. Since I have an adult daughter who is also slim, with long, dark hair, my brain was torn between paternal concern and generic-male lechery! I thought this might give you a laugh.
You look really good in this video 😏🐳 #HeritageHumaneSociety
G is for GARBAGE!
X is possibly the worst horror film ever made, and Pearl isn’t too far behind it. Both film bored me out of my mind. But I understand this generation has Lower IQ’s so I let things slide.
Ive been seeing your comments and wow you got a little too much in your hands,so full of yourself.
