    the 'metatextuality':
Ed Harris: The future is coming, practical effects and having a great time at the Movies is not in it.
Tom Cr-I mean, 'Maverick': Maybe so, sir. But not today.
Strong, simple story - it rocks.

Tom Cruise wasn't seen as an action star until Mission Impossible in the mid-90s. People forget that. He completely redefined his career. At the time, people laughed when they saw Tom Cruise was starring in Top Gun. The guy from Risky Business? Get out of here! Most critics felt at the time, he pulled it off because he spent half of Top Gun sitting in a cockpit rather than doing actual stunts. It wasn't until Mission Impossible, and really, Mission Impossible 2 where he showed he was capable.

By far the best popcorn turn your brain-off Hollywood blockbuster film in recent memory. On IMAX it was a ridiculously goosebump-impressive cinematic experience that is unlikely to ever leave my memory. If this film doesn’t ransack the technical awards at the Oscars (sound, editing, cinematography, VFX etc) it will be a blasphemy of monumental proportions. The amount of difficulty shooting most of the aerial scenes, the commitment by the actors and crew for the stunts and the technology they had to develop in order to achieve it is on another level.
On a critical level, I think they should have explored more of Maverick’s relationship with Penny. Although I much prefer her to Charlie, the whole dynamic between them felt lacklustre at times, underdeveloped and not as warm an intimate as I would prefer it. Also I would have loved to see Maverick’s and Rooster small adventure journey from their crash site to the airbase in the third act. An extra 5-8 minutes of ground action on how they got to the airbase and the challenges they faced behind enemy lines. It would also have added more into their relationship development (build of trust etc) making that carrier ending scene even more emotionally impactful and tear jerking.
Other than that it was an absolutely incredible old school style popcorn blockbuster - the way Hollywood SHOILD BE DOING IT - which will certainly turn into a classic down the road.

There's nothing braver then when a man admits he is defeated. That scene with Iceman & Maverick truly was that moment. Where as arrogant as maverick was years ago, years later he is filled with fear & doubt that this risky mission won't go well. And it's emotional and equally so when Iceman grants him reassurance.
The moral of the story I believe is,
*I've got your back, if you got mine.*

This movie, though admittedly, a lot of fun, is one of the most lazily written movies I’ve ever seen. It’s almost a beat for beat remake of the original with a little Star Wars thrown in. Here’s a short list of events that happen in both films (I’m probably missing a few).
    1. While on dangerous mission maverick risks his life and his plane to help someone else
2.Maverick gets reprimanded and is reluctantly sent to Top Gun
    3. Maverick meets love interest in bar
    4. Bar scene introduces pilots
    5. Pilots, unknowingly, have embarrassing encounter with Instructor
    6. Pilots discover their instructor is the person they had the embarrassing encounter with while in briefing
    7. Maverick breaks the hard deck
    8. Someone leaves their wingman
    9. Pilots play ball game on beach
    10. Maverick sleeps with love interest
    11. Pilots have a dangerous accident during a training mission
    12. Someone dies
    13. “Talk to me Goose”
    14. The pilot who originally leaves his wingman, comes to the rescue in the end
    15. Love interest hides in bar before being revealed at the end.
    16. Maverick on a motorcycle love interest in a Porsche

One of the things I like about the movie is that it reminds us that movies do not have to have a pretentious theme or try to be philosophically deep or have some hidden meeting. Sometimes entertainment can just be entertainment. I think sometimes we try to overthink movies, when the truth of the matter is more often than not a movie should simply be entertainment and nothing more. Top gun does a good job with that.

For me this movie is fun. It is Jet Porn, and very good on that front, like the original. The in-cockpit scenes are amazing and give you a feel for the stresses on the pilots. High G turns, manoevering are all very well done. The scenes of the jets and what they can do, however much CGI, are excellent. Seeing the F-14 come back, the true star of the original gets a chance to shine. I choose to overlook the fact that Maverick at almost 60 when filmed wouldn't be anywhere near an F-18. He is simply too old. But this is FUN. It is a big screen film with sound and sights. Not many films require IMAX. This one does. The romance falls flat on its face. But it works. Great review Maggie.

I haven't seen this film but the way you're describing it, it sounds like Maverick is still the main character despite passing the torch to a new generation. It's not "Maverick has been captured by guerillas and the new generation has to spend the entire movie going on their wacky adventure to find him." I would have liked the Star Wars Disney sequels to have been something similar. After Luke learned to become a Jedi in the OT, now he has to learn to be a teacher, where our MAIN CHARACTER struggles with doubts and his own hubris while he comes across some new faces on his quest like Fin and Rey who join him and look up to him as their patriarch, something he has to learn to be.

Crusie's personal life not withstanding.... He's a terrific actor and worked with a variety of director types. As mentioned, he went for riskier roles a couple decades ago. Since his personal life debacles, he's been mostly happy in his MI stunt-y type roles. That can't last forever; we have to be near the end of watching Cruise hang off buildings and planes. I hope he goes back to quieter or Thoughtful roles, like a Robert Redford All is Lost. He has the chops for it.

  • @TeamDaemon1980
    @TeamDaemon1980 Před rokem +4

I think Maggie is about a decade plus younger than me but how she speaks of movies feels like she was born before me. She gets it with Tom Cruise's career and appeal, and that cheesy 80s nostalgia some of us grew up watching.
The original Top Gun was the very first movie I remember seeing in the theater. I turned 6 in 1986. My aunt born 1972 was like Nancy in Stranger Things. She had the Tom Cruise poster on her wall. Teenage girls were either obsessed with Tom or Ralph Macchio during the mid-80s.
Top Gun: Maverick was amazing. Sure, it wasn't perfect. The pacing was a little off. The love story was weak as well as the dialogue. The mission sounded too unrealistic. Basically, mission: impossible. Mav probably wouldn't have survived that Mach 10 ejection going 7600 MPH but we actually never see Dark Star crash.
Even with all that, I still loved it! For me, the core thing is Maverick was a broken man after 35 years and he's finding happiness again. He's becoming more humble and more careful. He's reconnecting with people from his past. The mission is secondary.
I never walked away from the theater so happy since The Shawshank Redemption (1994). Top Gun: Maverick gave me those feelz! A love letter and fan service to the OG fans while still improving all the elements the OG had.
Perhaps that middle act felt pointless the more you rewatch it. Mostly watching his pilots fail the training. I also would've liked more background from Mav's students like Hangman and Phoenix. But for a movie called Maverick, it's about Maverick.
I did think using "Great Balls of Fire" sung by a bar crowd full of Millennials was kinda cheesy and the final third act felt stretched but still exciting. And it's the typical Tom Cruise smugness that might turn people off who aren't necessarily fans of him. While I think that the romance felt forced, I still prefer Penny over Charlie.
Charlie's romance felt way more forced being she's older and Mav's instructor. Felt more like a fling. Penny was mentioned in the OG as the admiral's daughter. I thought that relationship felt a little more realistic but also not quite convincing me that Mav really loved her. He kept leaving her. Amelia even warned him not to break her mom's heart again.
It has flaws but a lot of great movies have them. I can name several from The Godfather, Citizen Kane, and such. I do agree with Maggie that Tom does come to full circle with these type of movies. Top Gun is Tom's legacy movie. He isn't where he is without it. So for him to return to his 80s roots that started it all for him, I thought he nailed it.
All this without Tony Scott. And Tarantino seems to love the film too and Quentin has seen thousands upon thousands of films. I prefer his takes on movies over Siskel & Ebert when they were still alive. I'm aware Tarantino haters calls him a hack but I love his dialogue even if it's unrealistic and love the characters he develops.
Seen Top Gun: Maverick 18x in the theater. I saw it a few more times after I already downloaded the movie onto to my phones. Only surpassed by Elvis with 23x. I have Top Gun: Maverick as my 2nd favorite movie of the year behind Elvis and a top 20-30 all-time fav.
I just have a harder time rewatching action movies the way I do with comedies or something with strong dialogue or music. Top Gun: Maverick is more in line next to Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade and The Empire Strikes Back. Movies I love but aren't in my top 10. I have a few dumb movies in my top 10 like Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure and Hot Tub Time Machine.
With that said, Top Gun: Maverick is the best military action film in my eyes. Best sign up for the Navy, Air Force, or become a pilot movie. Best Tom Cruise film. Best legasequel. Best 2022 film. Yes, it can be dumb but it still feels like it's the best movie experience I had this year the way Gladiator was pretty dumb but still won Best Picture for 2000. Titanic was even dumber and won 11 Oscars.. 🤣
I hope Top Gun: Maverick wins BP but it probably won't. It's not the type that wins them. It will be one of those artsy film that people will forget about in 5 years. While many people will still have Top Gun: Maverick among their most favorite films of all-time like the OG still is. I like Top Gun: Maverick more than every single MCU film ever made including Infinity War and Endgame.
I saw No Way Home and Top Gun 2 last weekend and Top Gun 2 is clearly superior. And No Way Home is one of my favorites from 2021 and top 10 for all MCU films. MCU "films" are just dumb "movies" catered to kids and man childs. Amusement park thrill rides as Scorsese called them. If you think Tom Cruise movies are dumb, go watch a "great" MCU and DCEU film and find all the plot holes and illogical conclusions.
Gee, Doctor Strange was stuck falling for 12 hours! 🤣 Then ideally shows up at the very end. I still love No Way Home and it's my favorite Spider-Man movie. But man, it has a ton of flaws that you start sounding nitpicky when you start pointing out all the flaws from Maverick.
My Top 3 Favorite 2022 Films
    1. Elvis
    2. Top Gun: Maverick
    3. The Batman
I'm aware of Elvis' flaws. Tom Hanks is actually a weak link to the film. It's even more obnoxious than Top Gun 2 without really explaining who Elvis really was. But I don't care. I love it! I love movies that I enjoy listening to and Elvis is like that this the way The Big Lebowski and Once Upon A Time... In Hollywood are. Elvis actually moves faster than Maverick even if the scenes can be shallow without any emotional substance.
Listen, no movie or TV show can please everyone. Queen Elizabeth died today and we got people bashing her on social media. That's how the world is these days. There will always be haters to somebody or some thing. I'm enjoying House of the Dragon but I can see its flaws too and see why some don't like it. That's just how it goes. Praise or criticize. Love or hate. Can't please everyone. Sometimes we need to enjoy things even if we are aware of its flaws. "Don't think, just do."
Opening it with "Danger Zone" again + Lady Gaga + Hans Zimmer will always be a W in my ears.

It was a movie about Ariel combat action sequences and everything else was built around that and that's the way it should be. If you've got a 4k TV and decent sound bar then the action scenes were 10/10. But that part at the end when they were about to get killed but hang man comes to save the day was too predictable. That trope is so overused.

I remember Top Gun being one of my first DVD's. Like so many I have nostalgia for it. Just all the 80's things in one movie. Such a catchy and uplifting soundtrack. So much cheese (I like cheese in movies). Cool subject.
Now being a bit older and seen more movies I can't say it's a favorite of any sort but still has some nostalgia factor.
I, like many, are sick of all the endless reboots and remakes. Was this going to be something cheap to make fast money from old fans of the first movie?
Tom Cruise? Not a favorite actor but after seeing many of his movies. I like quite many of them. Although as famous as he is and how famous many of his films are - Hé is not a favorite actor (he can be better if he wants too). He is great for actor stunts but feel he could be a better actor in other parts at this point. If a new Tom Cruse movie comes out my interest isn't that high.
For this movie. I wanted to see it but my expectations was quite low. I think it has some "Netflix"-qualities but is overall a good throwback and has some substance. It didn't feel like just watching a more boring version of the first one. With the flight scenes and drama of the first movie I would say this is the better movie in most ways.
I left the cinema very happy and had a long good walk home. Memorable experience!

I wander what is your opinion on the fact that both “Top Gun” movies are an extremly successfull recruitment tool for the US military? To the point, that both movies could not have had happened without a support and a blessing of the military’s PR section and are in fact one of the most successful tools of recruitment in their arsenal.
The movie is amazing technically but it’s very hard for me to enjoy it on a fun, superficial level of the spectacle knowing that its, more or less, military propaganda.

Excellent review! I didn't really care for the original Top Gun either - it's one of a handful of Tony Scott films that didn't really do it for me. Maverick was a big step up. There's a real mission, and real stakes driving the action this time. We're seeing a lot of old-school characters looking for validation on film recently. There's a through-line in the bond movies and mission impossible films where the old school spies have to constantly justify their own existence in the face of progress. Maverick is working for that validation too, and it makes for a really compelling blockbuster.

You’re kidding, right? You must be totally blind to tension and subtext . Whether it was intentional on the part of the film-makers is immaterial to it tangibly being there. Idk about audiences in the ‘80s, when media-savvy people watch it today, they tend to see it quite readily. It’s not..subtle. Val Kilmer bites the air an inch from Tom Cruise’s face. @Collin what I just said about not understanding subtext? Applies to you perfectly. You just described the *text* of the film as an argument against its homoerotic subtext without understanding that subtext is independent. Also it isn’t as if this sadomasochistic machismo you describe is devoid of homoerotic subtext IRL. Also ‘gay-themed’ (which it obviously isn’t) is a million miles from ‘homerotic subtext’ (which it plainly has, millennials who see it for the first time tend to be taken aback). Also idk why you’re talking about what the film-makers wanted to make, I clearly said that it probably wasn’t intentional on their part (subtext doesn’t have to be intentional to be there, which you’d understand if you even knew what it is).

@Collin also yes, for example I trained in Muay thai the other day, no one bit the air in front of my face or presented his buttocks to me in a towel lmao - you need to watch this movie again, sounds like you haven’t even seen it. What’s your big hurdle, you can’t handle thinking your favourite movie from childhood that you watched in VHS has the big gay in it? Homoerotic doesn’t even mean gay anyway - it’s more like a sublimation of a libidinal energy that permeates the macho competition you describe and such thing is polymorphous ergo potentially sexual in its expression, or it erodes the boundaries between sexual and non. I don’t think someone who doesn’t know what subtext is (and related it to the closest word in their lexicon which in your case is ‘theme’) will get that tho

Top Gun: Maverick has been labeled anti-WOKE, but to be fair, its cast is just as diverse as House Of The Dragon and The Rings Of Power which gets labeled WOKE for casting black actors. Phoenix and Fanboy are Hispanic. Hondo, Coyote, Payback, and Warlock are black.
At least it's not like OG Top Gun which was a white man's movie almost reaching homoeroticism by that volleyball scene. So while it's not WOKE, it's not full of shirtless white guys like the OG had. It's very patriotic which should appeal to conservatives like myself.
If I ever get my pilot license like Tom Cruise did back in 1994, I would thank Top Gun: Maverick for the inspiration. The story is simple. Good beats evil even if evil is vague. That's it. You walk out of the theater with a smile in your face and a tear in your eye. They don't make movies like they used to and Maverick is a reminder of a bygone era.
Even if you hate the story or are not into fighter planes or Tom Cruise movies, you still got to admire the hard work they put into this film. This is not an easy film to shoot. Most of the actors had to go through boot camp. The technical achievements alone in making this film is worth praising. It will probably win multiple Oscars for technical awards like special effects and cinematography.

I personally found many "sincere" moments in this movie embarrassing. To me, the various subjects approached by it all sport the prevailing spiritual "theme," if you can call it that, of "My dad can beat up your dad"--as was also paramount in the original 'Top Gun'--which renders character origins, motivations, reactions, plot development, and such as trite, and very PURPOSEFULLY emotionally questionable, if not outright manipulative. I don't see how anyone PURPOSEFULLY doing something embarrassing relieves said act of its embarrassment.
Also, for me, there's no conscionable way out of the overarching culturally contextual quagmire from which this movie was produced. It doesn't seem to be insanely popular because it's "good," per se (I'd argue, mechanically, it's very mediocre [stunts notwithstanding]); it seems to be insanely popular as a cultural reaction to otherwise-ensconcing contemporary political motifs. Essentially, this movie seems to have become a cultural lightning rod; the ideological anti-'Black Panther,' if you will, for people who reject what they see as the encroachment of New Values, and who place all their personal commitment in Traditional Values (that never actually existed). Hence--as but a single example--the tangential inclusions of such cultural totems as "Great Balls of Fire," in the scene introducing the Top Gun trainees. Would Rooster, Goose's son, have learned that, on piano...? It's possible. Would everyone of young'un age, in the bar, become super-excited by its playing, and join in its singing...? Nope. More than likely, they wouldn't know what that WAS, much less have it memorized; they'd probably find it stylistically annoying. (Baby Boomers, you had your time. The world is obviously changing, and much of that cultural change is legitimately horrendous. But, for f**k's sake: Be dignified in being forced to give up the reigns. Ugh.) Anyway... Such cultural concerns are a HORRIBLE basis upon which to lionize--let alone CREATE--any work of art, perpendicular to its legitimate intrinsic value, just as it was in the case of 'Black Panther,' before this.
I didn't particularly find this movie awful. However, I'd say the touchstone of any good movie is its rewatchability (secondary to immediate evocation of emotional connection, perhaps). This movie has NONE, to my mind. If you've seen the first 'Top Gun,' then you've seen this. The sequel's "additions" seem more like direct nods to the original, or direct replacements of classic elements thereof, and are therefor moot. Where's the progression? Furthermore, why watch the same (embarrassing) movie twice?

Speaking of insecurity: 1) If someone writes a reply to a CZcams video, to a specific person who is NOT you, then it is the EPITOMY of "think[ing] you're that important to random strangers" to challenge the former--particularly when you clearly have NO idea what said person was talking about; and 2) no one who isn't connected to the production of a movie "loses," when a movie makes less money, for whatever reason.
