The only list that matters
Agree
Wrong.
@@kurtrivero368 In their defense they both beat off to the video.
I absolutely love listening to you. You’re so concise and yet colorfully descriptive
I have a video idea for you. I think it would be cool to hear about a list of movies that you consider “perfect.” Like a perfect movies list. Movies that fully come together for you and are cohesive where you wouldn’t change a single thing about them
There isn’t a film critic anywhere whose views about movies I respect and love more than yours, Maggie.. please continue your videos and if possible try to do more videos regularly
You’re so lucky to have seen “Vortex” in theaters. The movie had a very limited release and the closest theater that showed it was over three hours away from my house. I still haven’t seen it and I think the only way I’ll be able to see it is by getting an Amazon prime subscription.
Hope this will chuff you, Maggie: you're by far my favourite film critic, and objectively a fantastic one. And not just on CZcams, like, you're great - period. Thanks for this list and for your voice, and a very Happy New Year to you!
I just wanted to drop in and say that your observations on film are so compelling and cogent, standing apart from essentially all other film discussion channels which are either myopic or hyperbolic. I love the way you look at these films and your desire to push into close observation. Can't wait to see more from you!
Your take on Babylon being like casino was spot on I knew exactly what you meant
Nice list. My favorites for 2022:
1. Tar (hands down the best)
2. The Northman
3. Pinocchio (Del Toro's version, not the godawful Disney remake)
4. Kimi
5. The Batman (agree that stylistically it's the best Batman film to date)
6. Enola Holmes 2 (don't laugh, it was far better than the first one)
7. Emily the Criminal
8. Glass Onion
9. X (still haven't seen Pearl but I suspect it would have made my cut, like yours)
10. Vortex
11. Prey
12. Operation Mincemeat
Regarding your comment about Casino: that's one of my favorite Scorsese films. I say that without reservation; I even like it better than Goodfellas, because it's more epic in terms of the characters' rise and fall.
If you enjoyed Casino you need to read “Money and the Power” by Sally Denton and Roger Morris(husband and wife writer duo).
I think the same, Casino is the best Scorcese movie, better than Goodfellas
I just found your channel but I love the colourful way you speak about films, really makes me evaluate my own thoughts on the films we've both seen. Do you plan on watching Aftersun any time soon? Would love to hear what you have to say about it. Somehow "Red Rocket" completely went under my radar, but gonna check it out this weekend after that raving review!
My Favorite Films of 2022
1 - Decision to Leave
2 - Broker
3 - Everything Everywhere All at Once
4 - Crimes of the Future
5 - The Banshee of Inisherin
6 - After Sun
7 - Tar
8 - Triangle of Sadness
9 - Kimi
10 - The Northman
Honorable Mentions
- Marcel the Shell with Shoes On
- Hatching
- White Noise
- Top Gun 2
- The Whale
- Avatar 2
- RRR
- Mondocane
- Brian and Charles
- The Batman
Broker and Decision To Leave are also two great films, in my opinion:) Broker is so emotional and moving at times. Wonderful films from South Korea once more.
Thank you! these are some gems. Also i really appriciate your videos!
I would love to hear your take on the menu. Easily one of the best of last year in my opinion.
Such a great list. Your perspective on different films is very amazing.
You have definitely convinced me to watch a couple of films I had written off. I have become much more selective of new films that I choose to give my time too because I have such a big list of older films to get through. I appreciate these videos from people whose opinion I value to highlight the ones I might have slept on 🙂
Great list, Maggie! And happy New year. Looking forward to a lot of exciting reviews from you this year. Some of my favorites from last year are Nope, Red Rocket, Triangle of Sadness, Glass Onion, and Bodies Bodies Bodies.
I loved hearing about your favorites this year and some of the films I felt similar towards were Babylon and The Batman. Both stuck with me for the feelings they gave me more so than the cohesiveness of plot or director intent. Their atmosphere and overall production do a lot of the work in pulling me in and holding me there. I have yet to see Vortex and Banshees but plan to soon. My movie of the year still goes to Mad God for the absolutely demented spectacle that it was, but Tár is high on that list as well because I deeply enjoyed the character study. Phenomenal year for film. Let’s hope 2023 is even better!
I hated The Batman. Emo Twilight boy as Batman wasn't believable at all and I hate Paul Dano with a passion and hated him even though I didn't recognize him until the 3rd act.
@@stopthephilosophicalzombie9017 Robert as Batman was believable in my opinion. He’s incredibly angry at the world and the criminal element for what they did to his family and he’s detached himself from the world in his crime fighting obsession. He has a palpable rage and over the film he is shown to be social awkward and is slowly humanized by Selena Kyle. Try rewatching it and maybe you’ll be surprised.
Hey a few of these were 2021 😂 kidding but my top 10 currently is
Babylon, bardo, crimes of the future, the Northman, banshees of inisherin, the eternal daughter, the whale, bones and all, Armageddon time, and empire of light. Still a LOT I want to see though
I didn’t see much this year sadly. My tops are:
1.Babylon(purely for the cinematic experience of it all)
2. The Batman (cuz I’m bias towards Batman)
3. The fablemans (might like this more than batman idk)
4. Moonage daydream (only time a doc has ever been on my list)
5. Amsterdam (don’t understand the hate, didn’t see it in theaters, but ya know I was stoned)
Hi Maggie, good list! There's a few you mentioned that I will be checking out soon. All Quiet on the Western front is probably my movie of the year. It's just a very beautiful adaptation of that novel. I think it flew under a lot of radars because it's in German. If it wins a nomination for Best International film, that might give it some additional exposure.
Great list. Some of your picks would be on my list of the year, too. Some I would recommend that came out that I really loved would be Alejandro G. Inarritu’s Bardo, the new All Quiet on the Western Front German remake, Aftersun, Emily the Criminal, and EO. I hope any of these are of any interest to see.
Bones and all was one of the best this year
Love your list!
Cate Blanchett gave best performance of this year male or female
1 Close
2 The Banshees of Inisherin
3 Triangle of Sadness
4 Amsterdam
5 The Fabelmans
6 The Good Nurse
7 Bones and All
8 Im Westen nichts Neues
9 Top Gun: Maverick
10 Everything Everywhere All at Once
Good list, considering the options available. The one that most jumps out as me as missing would be "The Whale". Some reviewers found it to be exploitive or offensive, but that's not what I got at all. Much like my favorite movie of 2022, Banshees of Inisherin, it was simple and deep at the same time. Of course given that it's Aronofsky, you have to know that you're in for some tough emotions - but I made myself ready for that and I was surprised by how good it was.
Great perspective!
Violent Night, Top Gun 2, The Batman, and Terrifier 2 are the only movies I really loved from 2022.
Great list. As usual, we agree on a lot.
The Glass Onion "It feels like a nice slice of cake after dinner." What a great line! 😊.
Hi. I love your reviews.
My Top 5 this year (so far) were...
1. Triangle of Sadness
2. The Banshees of Inisherin
3. Blonde
4. Speak No Evil
5. Decision to Leave
Östlund will be high on my worst of the year list.
Haven't seen most of these, as my attention span has been taken for granted too many times by movie companies (and I do value your suggestions, thank you, and will certainly see a few of these, now). But I'm really glad that you liked Red Rocket so much. Because, personally, although I've only seen it once, I found it to be the greatest movie since Parasite.
I especially liked its originality: how it's essentially a comedy played completely straight. With elements so absurdly comical. And yet the direction and acting and settings lend themselves quite well to a humanistic sense of realism that truly immerses you (without getting too into it, I'd be greatly surprised if the writer isn't familiar with Shakespeare, Balzac, Dostoevsky, or Tennessee Williams). And although, there was one real plot hole, (when he escapes out the window) it doesn't even matter because it leads to the most hilarious part of the whole movie,--when he's jogging dick-flopping-naked-and-afraid to the sound of nsync (forever changing the meaning of that song!)-while lending homage to, and ratcheting up the absurdity of, Steve Martin's iconic dignity-thrashing scene in The Jerk.
And I'm going to have to disagree with you in a couple of ways about this movie. You talk about the sense of melancholy because it's the story of a man's downfall. However, he was already pretty much hitting rock bottom at the beginning of the movie (the pitch of his wildly and ingenuously absurd vacuous ego is what truly lightens things up, as anyone else in that situation would have been utterly and helplessly pitiful); with absolutely no money (he could have just come from jail), while having to constantly swallow the fact of his failed enterprise in front of so many people that he used to know. And I would probably call it melancholy if Mikey's character had enough sense, emotional intelligence, and consequently, self-awareness, to actually be philosophical.
Also, you speak of the sadness of American life. But I honestly feel that there was a deeper human truth there. Because all of our dreams (even Mikey's, which struck me as particularly illiterate and utterly bereft of imagination; as impoverished people generally do not have the luxury of art, and consequently, imagination, and are typically squeezed and cornered by society into a truly low and instinctually brutal state) are somewhat delusional. And quite simply because human beings are only capable of forethought, and not foresight. Anyways, without dreams, we cannot have hope. And without hope, none of us would even get out of bed in the morning.
Jay from RLM found the ending to be seriously depressing. But I found it to be absolutely wonderful. Because Mikey still had hope, to very last. He was still dreaming. He was still believing. And that is so wonderfully human. Also, the ending is only as ambiguous as your own heart is. Do you believe in human beings? Do you believe in love? In the kind of love so irrational that it could accept a naked sweaty liar who has absolutely nothing in the world to his name? Oh, I believe it. And I believe that nine times out of ten, that sort of love would certainly not come from a man.
Anyways, I hope that my tone wasn't too pointed, here (I suppose that I'm a polemicist, and my enthusiasm for art often gets the best of me!). Because I have great respect for you, and that interestingly rare and bright mind or yours that you've cultivated so well. Love your voice, in both senses, and I hope that you continue to speak to us.
Lovely list! Here's my top 5:
The Batman
Bones and All
My Policeman
Top Gun: Maverick
Everything All At Once
Just saw Babylon yesterday. I was surprised at how much I loved it. I think it is an incredibly well made movie and yea, it is cold like Casino but how many times have I seen Casino.? A lot! Same thing will happen with Babylon. Also loved Pearl. I still think Fabelmans is the best of the year but obviously haven't seen everything yet. Fall is runner up for me. Another nice surprise.
Good list. I liked 'Emily The Criminal' and 'You Won't Be Alone' this year - both were way more enjoyable than I'd expected. I loved 'Terrifier 2' as well, but that's a super niche movie for obvious reasons.
"see how they run" was awesome, heavily flavored by styles of wes anderson and edgar wright.
would love to hear ur take on it maggie.
This is a good call. I enjoyed that one a lot more than Glass Onion
Thank you for recognizing Mia Goth's off the wall performance in Pearl.
would love your thoughts on Aftersun
Hi Maggie, this is an interesting list that I really enjoyed. I'd love to see you record an episode on your feelings about the state of American films. I think that the impact of Marvel is now insidious. It feels that we basically have marvel movies every three weeks and horror and kids movies every week. There is almost a complete absence of adult oriented original stories. Would love to hear your thoughts.
In no order, some of my favorites were:
- The Banshees of Inisherin
- Aftersun
- Tar
- Top Gun Maverick (and I don’t like the original)
- Everything Everywhere All at Once
- GDT’s Pinocchio
- Nope
- Pearl
- Barbarian
Good list. Definitely need to check out some of the few I missed, especially Tar.
Top 10 favorite movies:
1. Top Gun: Maverick
2. Barbarian
3. The Batman
4. The Northman
5. RRR
6. The Outfit
7. Everything Everywhere All At Once
8. Bullet Train
9. The Menu
10. The Stranger
Honorable Mentions that got cut:
- Banshees of Inisherin
- Guillermo Del Toro's Pinocchio
- Nope
Feels wrong not to have Banshees of Inisherin on there, but The Stranger really stuck with me, and Banshees of Inisherin is just too fresh since I basically only just saw it not too long ago. I truly loved the top 7 and will probably watch them multiple times. I think most of them are undeniably great, but some of these I have there because I just had a great time watching them.
Have you seen See How They Run yet? I would be curious hear your thoughts on that one.
Happy new year, Maggie!
My 10 favorites this year were:
1- Vortex
2- Petite Maman
3- The Banshees of Inisherin
4- Great Freedom
5- Marcel the shell with the shoes on
6- You Have To Come and See it
7- Lullaby ( Cinco lobitos )
8- Nope
9- Tàr
10- The Worst Person in the World
Honorable Mentions: Crimes of the future, Aftersun, The Eternal Daughter, The Fablemans.
I've yet to watch Babylon & Women Talking.
Was pleasantly surprised to see glass onion on the list, had a blast with that one. Still have several big ones to see, planning on seeing decision to leave tonight
Nice list, Maggie, and Happy New Year. It's always great to see a mix of unique films, from the Hollywood Blockbuster "Top Gun: Maverick" to the bold insanity of "Babylon." I haven't seen a great many films this year, but of what I have seen, here's a short list of films I liked that were not mentioned in your video, and if possible, I'd love to hear your thoughts on them at some point.
"BARDO: False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths" - This is my favorite film of the year. I've been anticipating Alejandro González Iñárritu's return to filmmaking ever since his back-to-back hits with "Birdman" and "The Revenant," and this did not disappoint. This is the one film I saw this year that brought me back to a sense of magical realism I felt with great directors back in the golden days. Iñárritu looks deep within himself, constructing the film out of dreams he's had throughout his life about himself, his family, his work, and his culture. This is a hard film to unravel, and I'm not going to pretend I understand a lot of it. In fact, I will even admit that it's a little maddening sometimes. But I wouldn't want it any other way; this is truly the vision of a man pouring his heart out and exploring himself.
"Aftersun" - Arguably the most personal viewing experience I had all year. A somewhat autobiographical story of a young woman reflecting on a vacation she had with her dad when she was a little girl, attempting to make sense of him in the process. The film is told entirely through memory, which is a faulty and convoluted mechanism. How much of the film is an accurate memory, how much is misremembered, and how much is a fantasized idea of what might have happened? Speaking as someone who lost my dad nearly 10 years ago, I can say the sense of recollection of a lost loved one is very accurate to how I think back on past events. The stuff I remember stays with me. The stuff I vaguely remember is stuff I question. And for the things I don't understand, I try to imagine context to make sense of. Overall, I think the point is that no matter how hard we may try, we may never honestly know our loved ones, no matter how intimate we may have been with them. The filmmaking is something to marvel at as well; the camera placement is meticulously crafted to be just a little off, while the editing and sound design add a melancholy effect to the process of remembering. I'm not gonna lie; the film got to me.
Get a job in static Security!
I watch 3 films a shift, read for 2 hours & still find time to browse YT.
Luckkyyy lmao
Can you start adding descriptions to ur videos. I like reading descriptions to YT videos b4 I watch em
Great choices! I've got so many movies to watch from 2022.. I've not seen most of those movies!!! :( Crazy good year.
I liked a bunch of movies this year. A bunch of solid ones. My favorites were Barbarian, Nope and The Northman.
Yes!!! I was waiting for this vid! Deepfocuslens is the best movie critic Ever 💯 and I agree with her best list of *22! Especially,”Babylon”. Hands down the best film of the year 🔥
0:05 Same. 2022 had a lot of good films which surprised me.
You surprised me with your list. I didn’t expect so many mainstream movies. I will have to catch Babylon.
Have you seen skinamarink? I was genuinely scared, wondering if we can get a video with your thoughts?
I'll have to check out Pearl, I missed that one. I haven't seen that many 2022 movies as a ot are due in the UK but from what I've seen, I 'll give a top 5 -
5. Babylon - I agree with you Maggie it is stunning filmmaking but it probably could have done with some editing - great performances, great setpieces but a lot of uncomfortable comparisons with other movies (Pulp Fiction, Singin in The Rain), but the sheer ambition is to be celebrated in a generally unimaginative current cinema environment.
4. Everything Everwhere All At Once
3 The Banshees of Inisherin
2 The Fabelmans
1 AFTERSUN - a simple but stunning debut
What made the last year stand out was a trifecta of unusually-inspired blockbusters (tempting to take as signifying of the recovery of cinema as a viable industry post-covid) which were Everything Everywhere etc., the Northman, and the crowning jewel which was Top Gun: Maverick (I didn't catch the Batman). Other than that, the only film I saw that spoke to me was Aftersun. Decision to Leave, the Banshees of Inisherin, Mad God - they didn't do much for me. Corsage was interesting. Tar and Babylon only come out here this year. I just saw the new Avatar which was good in the ways it could have been good I guess, enjoyable. Ones I missed that I think I might have liked to see were the Wonder and RRR.
just watched Tar, and its fantastic. I think it does a way better job of showing egotistical conductors/educators than Whiplash. Much more realistic really shows what those type of directors are like. They're not R Lee Ermy, they're much subtler than that
More realistic certainly...but Whiplash is more of a fever dream addiction experience, and not meant to be an authentic depiction in the same way. Less about the periphery...and more about losing yourself to the ecstasy of performing without judgement, which resonantes with me. I see them as serving completely different purposes. Tar more cerebral, Whiplash more visceral. Both very effective in their own ways.
@@deepfocuslens absolutely. I probably enjoyed Whiplash more, but I was enthralled with Cate Blanchetts performance. I want to see Michelle Yeoh get her roses, but I don't know now
@@lenflakisinski6260 I'm on the Blanchett train. Her performance was so beyond everyone else imo. I think with perspective, people will see that.
Here's my favourites from 2022:
1. Nope
2. Everything Everywhere All at Once
3. The Northman
4. The Banshees of Inisherin
5. Men
6. Top Gun: Maverick
7. Last Night in Soho
8. The Batman
9. The Outfit
10. The Conference
Still gotta see: Bones and All, Pearl, Tar, Vortex, Babylon, Triangle of Sadness.
I don't usually make film requests but you should really watch Death in Venice (1971). Would be a fascinating review and discussion.
Good list. I of course am never able to see all the movies that came out this year but I’m going to try and catch: Babylon, Everything Everywhere, X/Pearl, and maybe the Northman.
My top 3:
1. Top Gun Maverick
2. Barbarian
3. The Batman
Nice list, Maggie.
1. Elvis (saw it 23x in the theater)
2. Top Gun: Maverick (saw it 18x)
3. The Batman
The rest is pretty much a tie for me. I think Pearl might be 4th. Will eventually see RRR and Glass Onion on Netflix.
Woah, you're hardcore 😳 😄
You saw Elvis 23 times at the cinema!!! WTF!???
Nine films to put on my watch list. HNY Maggie. 🎬🎉
Had a totally opposite experience in 2022. Saw less than 10 new movies last year. Gotta get on some of these
Thank you ❤️
Would absolutely love to hear your thoughts on Good Luck to You, Leo Grande.
My faves, a tie between The Whale and Black Phone.
Glad to see love for Pearl, underrated movie for sure
Aftersun and The Quiet Girl (An Cailín Ciúin) are my favorites.
I still need to see Glass Onion. I enjoyed Black Adam probably more than I should have, Wakanda Forever was also surprisingly good.
Holy sh*t, Maggie practically went more mainstream this year than me :-D
Below are my personal favourites of 2022.
*MOVIES (most enjoyable/touching)*
1 - Top Gun: Maverick
2 - The Quiet Girl
3 - The Fabelmans
4 - Marcel the Shell with Shoes On
5 - Everything Everywhere All at Once
6 - Bullet Train
7 - Prey
8 - Triangle of Sadness
9 - Aftersun
10 - RRR
RUNNERS UP: She Said; Pearl; Hellraiser; Weird: The Al Yankovic Story; Crimes of the Future; The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent; Metal Lords; Nope; X; The Outfit
HAVEN'T SEEN YET: Tár; The Whale; Happening; Decision to Leave; Playground
*Loved everything about "Banshees of Inisherin" except the character motivation. Couldn't get past the nonsense of self-harm to prove "a point".
Nice top. Some of them I haven't watched yet. So far mine is:
Babylon
RRR
The Banshees of Inisherin
Batman
All Quiet in the Western Front
Argentina 1985
Puss Boots: The Last Wish
Tàr
La Roya (Colombia)
Triangle of Sadness
This is one of the few legit top ten lists I’ve seen this year.
Triangle of Sadness. Haven't seen anything else painted on as wide a canvas and done as well yet.
I liked The Whale. Even though the dialogue spells the themes out, I liked how it portrayed the characters honestly, lots of soul searching, and ultimately it came together into a spiritual experience
FINALLY BABYLON IS IN HERE!! 🎥
I tend to disagree with your reviews but I share many of your top films. The one I had that you don't is Crimes of the Future by David Cronenberg. I think your review said you enjoyed it, but it didn't show up here. I've been thinking about it ever since. Definitely struck a nerve for me.
Mine were The Batman, The Nortman, Men, Crimes of the Future, Pearl, & The way of water, & Babylon
My top:
1. Shin Ultraman
2. Funny Pages
3. Decision to Leave

10. aftersun
Watch Bardo, Resurrection, and Both Sides of the Blade, if you haven't already
I would give Elvis a chance. Austin’s performance was awesome
I agree everything except top gun.
Agree about Mia Goth. I've seen her in a few films but never paid much attention to her performances until Pearl. That movie was amazing because of her unhinged, raw acting. And I also noticed the score of Batman...especially the last few minutes of the movie. I've listened to it many times since watching the movie.
She was great as Harriet Smith in Emma.
Here's my top ten:
1. Top Gun: Maverick
2.Batman
3.The Gray man
4.Bullet Train
5.Ambulance
6. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever
7. Bones and All
8. Everything, Everywhere, All at once
9. Nope
10. Uncharted
Thank you, Yes to Red Rocket. I am so glad you gave it a shout out. Such an under-looked film. One of Sean's best.
My top 5 of the year: nope, babylon, pearl, everything everywhere, avatar
