- 45+ minutes of classic moments from the 10 favorite mystery guests ever on WML-- as chosen by the members of our Facebook group!
Now this isn't just a bunch of MG segments strung together, mind you-- these are very carefully selected highlights from around 20 mystery guest appearances by these top 10 favorite-voted guests.
We have these polls periodically in the Facebook group, which will help a great deal in support of a new book on WML we're working on to be published next year by McFarland. The clips are in no particular order, since the "Favorite Mystery Guests" poll is actually still open as of this writing to rank these top ten picks. So if you'd like to vote, make sure to visit the group and register your voice! It's a lot more fun than certain other kinds of voting that I understand to be going on in other areas of life.
Air dates are noted on all the clips-- you can find the complete shows very easily using the chronological episode playlists on the main WML channel page: / @whatsmyline

Wish the world today was as polite and sophisticated
Oh that's just television hand sensors. 😊
We still had crazy people, addicts- not exactly like now, alcoholics, wife beaters, and children beaters
Too bad politeness is a thing of the past & rudeness a thing of the present ! 🤪🙄
The first Jack Benny segment was cut too soon. Jack asked if he gets paid for tonight and when he gets to Dorothy to shake hands, she hands him a dollar bill...priceless. All in all this is a fabulous compilation!
I love how the celebrity guests are so delighted to be there.
Rosalind Russell is hysterical!
Ya!
She looks awful pulling ugly faces !.
And stupid ! .
Loved her!😂 The voice lol.
The whole show that had her on it is on youtube. Yes, she was hilarious!!
George and Gracie were AWESOME! ! I loved watching them more than I can express! 🥰🥰
So nice to see how well behaved, courteous and classy all these people are. My how we have slipped ... so, very, very sad
The idea that the public could see their favorite celebrities get silly and human was just a wonderful idea.
exactly, perfectly summed up
And how very human those celebrities are!
back when celebrities were human and not robots
@last Koresh reptilian shape shifters* ftfy
I did that watching the "Star Trek" bloopers and outtakes at the sci-fi conventions! I can now watch the actors and actresses from "Enterprise", etc. (as their chrs.) cut up and mess up on You Tube on my DVD series sets. Still, I had fun watching this as I like the olshows better. better.
Love Debbie Reynolds! She absolutely had it all. Gorgeous.
She was close to 48. She was born in 1907 and this was 1953.
@@bevh5590Debbie Reynolds was NOT born in 1907. She was born on 4/1/1932. This episode aired on 8/29/1954 which means she was just 22 years old.
Debbie Reynolds BEAUTIFUL!! RIP
Pure joy - reminders of how wonderful people can be!
I can never get enough of these old shows with talent and class that outshines anything since then.
N English These greats put today's "talent" and "class" to shame and show also how damned far we've declined.
@@mmjhcb Couldn't possibly be more right!
@@luissantiago8446 Thank you!
@@mmjhcb You are welcomed!
What? You don’t like The Masked Singer? 😜
These were great times. Classy celebrities and people were dressed lovely! The singing by Louis Armstrong is the best!
My favorite Rosalind Russell was great!
Arlene was always trying to get the talent to sing or share their talent, but Louis was the only one who gave in and sang!
I was a kid in the 60s and this show was cancelled in 1967, it was syndicated & that's when I started watching (had no idea it existed in the 50s) and tried never to miss an episode, it was so entertaining. I especially like these 1950s episodes, the guests and panelists were so polite, well-spoken, intelligent and classy--a far cry from today. I can see why this show lasted for 25 years!
Can't we bring these absolutely wonderful humans back to monitor and advise today's group (2022)
17.5 years
I got to see these in the 1960s into the 1970s as syndication reruns.
What a treat!
I watched it as a kid in the early 60s. I didn't quite understand it like I do now though...lol
Mr Louis Daniel Armstrong.. I would wipe the tear from my eye if I weren't struggling with that lump in my throat!
Your band wasn't there in the studio but it was by your side in spirit!
Only a world class jazzer can hypnotise his audience into believing that the Allstars were there!
I think I could also hear Mr C with you, Pops.
A- well, a-that''s jaaazzz !
Debbie Reynolds was so charming and funny. Total knockout too. Hollywood doesn’t have women like this anymore.
She's from the days when they had to take charm and deportment lessons also elocution training. Today that's considered passe.
True ❤❤❤❤
@@eyg2207Now Cardi B is the standard.😢
This show had the most legendary guests on it . That's what made it iconic in television history
Not old enough to remember some of them but Google is our friend, right.
A favorite was when Ann Landers was on- apparently she was not that well known- advice to the lovelorn.
I love how all the panel members stood up for Mrs. Roosevelt
Also for Marian Anderson.
Yayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
No wonder Hillary C. channels Eleanor: people seem to fight on behalf of these strange women.
I wouldn’t have. Who is she.
Rosalind Russell is a hoot
I adore Rosalind Russell! I could watch Mame once a week, and another favorite is The Trouble With Angels, costarring Hayley Mills. She’s a beautiful, marvelous actress, with a terrific laugh.
Gracie is #1 for me. "Don't answer George, it will give us away." Not only the most distinctive voice imaginable but she uses his name.
I wonder where the idea for the line, 'Don't tell him Pike' came from? 🤔
On brand too 😅
George (at the end of their show): “Say goodnight, Gracie.”
Gracie: “Goodnight Gracie.”
This was their closing running gag for years.
Some tremendous performers included here. Debbie Reynolds was staggeringly beautiful and very clever and funny.
Rosalind Russell is the absolute best. She’s one of the greatest underrated comedians of her time.
Oh really? I have never heard of her...
@@Vinterfrid My Girl Friday with Cary Grant. Or His Girl Friday.
Art Carney's imitation of John Daly was terrific 😂
Debbie Reynolds was one of my all time favorite women. I loved her. RIP sweet dear lady. Never will there be another beauty and talent as she was.
Loved Debbie Reynolds in How the West was Won particularly!
Though, let's be fair, her daughter sure took after her in so many ways!
For Eleanor Roosevelt, EVERYONE stands to say goodbye, not just the men! Such was the respect and admiration Mrs. Roosevelt commanded. What an amazing person she was!
Also the Respect for The Roosevelt Administration.
Its a great thing Franklin picked Truman for his V P.
She definitely was a one-of-a-kind woman. She would’ve been a great president!
The role model for all First Ladies. Unfortunately not always followed.
Great observation. All Rise!!! Gregg Oreo long Beach Ca (E. R. was an angel among us)
An Icon
The panel showed great respect to Mrs. Roosevelt by all of them standing to shake her hand
Those were the days
She would have made a great President!
They actually did that with most guests. I was raised by my grandparents who were from that era.. Everything is yes mam, no mam..and getting up when greeting someone.
I wasn't even alive during Gracie Allen's lifetime, but she was quite a delightful sprite of a person and entertainer. She played to great affect as the ditzy partner. Revealing their identity by speaking was brilliantly funny.
She was an amazing woman! 🥰
to hear Louie Armstrong sing...WOW!
So happy Arlene finally got someone to sing for her. Louis was great!
This was the greatest show on TV. Hands down. Daly was a great host.
So much fun
I grew up watching this show.
Absolutely!
I completely agree & I never saw anything except the reruns.
I've become addicted to watching these again. And i forgot how wonderfully, naturally funny Steve Allen was!
He was, for sure!
I feel like I'm observing superior beings from a future advanced civilisation?
Art Carney impersonation of FDR was incredible and what can I say about Mr. Armstrong? Such a legend!!!
They should bring back this show! Problem is, nobody could do it as well as John Daly!!
Today's stars are just too coarse and vulgar to pull off a show like this now.
Thanks for sharing Louis sing it live! It made my old bones very happy!
that voice is to die for..wonderful
Wasn’t Debbie Reynolds totally stunningly beautiful! ❤️
She certainly was beautiful, far more class & beauty than boozing Elizabeth Taylor! Some friend, huh!! And Carrie fisher, Debbies daughter, was an absolute worthless daughter, didn’t speak to her mom for 10 years, very close to the man eater, Elizabeth! Debbie died one day later after Carrie died, it wasn’t from a broken heart, God called Debbie home, it was her time!! I loved Debbie, I wish she could have been my mother, I would have been loyal & loved her to my dying day! Debbie was still beautiful at 80, she kept her youthful looks, I think her own daughter was jealous of her, but many daughters are jealous of their mothers. Debbie is singing Tammy in heaven, one of my favorites ❤️💕💜💚🧡💕❤️🧡💚💜
All through her life. So lovely. She and the likes of Maureen O'Hara are timelessly beautiful!
@@jolenaagapisou3803 I saw an interview her son gave and he said right before she had the stroke and died she said I'm going to go with Carrie. I think her and her daughter were very close the last year's of their lives
I saw Debbie eating in a restaurant in Denver once, it was like light was shining out of her face, her smile was electric.
Such a sad sad beautiful yet a TRUE BEAUTY who went thru many tragedies with grace!
I loved Debbie and Lucy. Surprised they didn't show John Wayne. He got the biggest standing ovation I ever saw on this show..
Except for Joan Crawford
It's hard to appreciate just how long this program ran until you see the same guest in different appearances years apart.
Too bad this show isn’t on the air today. Where could the producers find such talent, poise and class today.?
I just realized that I’ve been smiling nonstop for 45:41! We’ll never see talent like this again!
But we have seen the distant future in the form of their talent - and in the form of their sensitive and discerning appreciators such as yourself!
@@richardgreenlees7088 ~Cringe~
Debbie Reynolds has got to be the female star who has the cutest, most engaging personality, along with the prettiest looks to go along with it! I’d say the star that has the same qualities equally as Debbie is Elizabeth Montgomery aka Samantha on Bewitched!
Debbie Reynolds is just radiant! 💘
The appearance by Debbie Reynolds is priceless! It shows the depth of her talents, and is absolutely hilarious.
Jack Benny was hilarious!
What an era for entertainment! Louis Armstrong was great! I can’t believe he stumped them with his iconic voice even disguised! Debbie Reynolds’s was just a doll! Art Carney was hysterical and Danny Kay so handsome! Lucy speaking Martian had me cracking up! What a treasure to have all these old clips!
Kaye
You're cute!
Daly was a tremendous host. All of these guys seemed to have a blast.
Hell yes! Great host! Entertaining without trying to be 'cute'! (Ive noticed the same thing with all of the non-stars -- the 'ordinary' people -- they are all people of real substance! Its not an act -- they didn't know how to be cheap of low! Maybe that's the direction of human evolution -- In about 100,000 years!)
@@victorsauvage1890 so much more authentic than 2022
Some of the shows were he'd obfuscate the answer are really funny. And when Fred Allen was in the panel, he'd come up with some very funny retorts to when John would do this.
WML IS TIMELESSLY ENTERTAINING.
A brilliant concept from start to finish.
Jack Benny still remains my favorite comedian. His sense of timing was always spot on. He was great on radio and just as great on television.
Totally agree! Jack Benny was the standard by which so many other comedians strive. And he was also a wonderful and quietly generous human being
Absolutely! He was brilliant.
He was silly not funny
I remember watching reruns of his show in the late 70s when I was at college. They were really funny!! And he was very funny on this!!
Jack Benny still remains my favorite comedian too, IslandGirl 9152! He was so hysterically funny, and his show on both radio and television was enormously popular for many decades! The cast on the shows were also hilarious! I adored them all and miss them all!
Debbie Reynolds, what a doll
John Daly could be so funny in his long explanations to answer certain questions, but he was also very clear, LOL! Bennett Cerf was my favorite panelist!
"Don't answer, George." What a funny, brilliant, wonderful woman that Gracie Allen was! One of a kind!
None was smarter. Her humor was for too long portrayed as "dumb." Instead, it was basically an alternative perception. Brilliant patterns of thoughts and brilliantly executed. There's a bit of Gracie in Maria Bamford.
George wouldn't have been Anything without Her.
I imagine the request to start speaking was a deliberate feed for that line. Very funny, and similar to the later joke in the British TV series "Dad's Army" which became one of the most famous lines in British comedy, when a German U-Boat commander demands the name of the dim-witted young soldier and his equally dim-witted commanding officer says: "Don't tell him, Pike!"
@@kevinlee9751 George was great as a straight man to her and the affection between the two of them made everything work. Gracie Allen could not have been Gracie without George Burns being there. It's like saying Bud Abbott would nothing without Lou Costello. It was the team that made it work.
how? she messed up lol.
Louis singing the whole "Hello Dolly" a cappella - today, that would go thru legal, cost a fortune, or else get blown into a huge number. Hugely underappreciated for his musicianship. Classic!
Very true about the legal ramifications-- and as a matter of fact, Louis actually broke a contractual obligation by singing the song on WML! He was contracted to debut the song on television on another program, I believe it was the Perry Como Show, and just didn't care. His manager, Joe Glaser, was reportedly having a brain aneurysm offstage seeing what was happening. You couldn't contain a spirit like Louis's with a piece of paper. :)
🏆🏆
@@WhatsMyLine awesome
Watching John laugh so hard with Fred is a joy.
Louis at ~41:00 singing Dolly. Oh my heavens! Superlative. He sings just like he plays trumpet almost the same passage as you can see it. Terrific! Shows you the difference between the raw talent of a star like Louis when he is put on the spot, he makes an immediate decision if he is going to do it at all he will do it with all the artistry it demands. No halfhearted effort nothing less than five stars, wow!
I know it’s been 3 years since you wrote this, but I hope you can see these words now when I say Satchmo singing like that really hit home how things have changed so much in 60 years… but then again, 60 years is a long time. I’m thinking about how much had happened the world 60 prior to this broadcast.. back around 1900.
Thanks for comment though. It’s still being appreciated in 2022.
He was larger than life. My Favorite picture of him is him playing for his Wife with the Great Pyramid in the background ❤
I absolutely, unequivocally adored Danny Kaye and could have watched him morning, noon and night. He kept me in stitches. Rest in peace kind, talented Sir. ✨♥️✨
For me Debbie Reynolds was the real stand out. The voice she was using and the antics she came up with had me laughing more than I have for a long time!
I agree. She was such a doll, in every sense of the word. So cute, funny, smart, and kind and gave birth to Princess Leia. 😀
@@travisn2875 She was unsinkable as Molly Brown!
She was more than just nice. When people recognized her on the street, she did her best to be cordial to them. Would give an autograph upon request. All of the characters she played in her films was someone who was trying make somebody else feel good.
She was everything…..what a scene
she was so sweet
It is wonderful to once again see stars who have passed over the years. Thank you very much for this post
Debbie Reynolds is adorable!
With that, you will find nobody to argue!
Debbie Reynolds was a Cutie . Eddie Fisher was such a crap bag for leaving her.
And without a doubt the best mystery guest of all time.❤
I liked the Roz Russell and Debbie Reynolds clips the best. Young Debbie was radiant here!
Thanks for taking the time to put these all together! It's so much fun to see them! Nice to see the Man, Louis Armstrong, author of "What a Wonderful World."
Another song I like by him is The Bucket's got a Hole in it.
I listen to Satchmo sing...
And I think to myself...what a wonderful world.
That’s my favorite Satchmo song.
Ohhhhhhhh Yesssssss
We played his record at my mom's funeral.
This is probably the only game show that had the biggest celebrities in the world as guests!
No doubt... on what other show could you find everyone from Colonel Sanders to Salvador Dali, from Liberace to Frank Lloyd Wright?
Big celebritys like Walt Disney, Frank Sinatra, Steve McQueen and Sean Connery were also mystery guests in this show.
Well the German show "Wetten Dass?!" had a lot of celebrities, too when it was still famous. There were people like Bill Gates, Michael Jackson and many more international celebrities.
a show from heaven ?
I loved Dali
Debbie Reynolds was HILARIOUS!! 😆
What a pro John Daly was, especially during the Mrs Roosevelt segment.
He's a master wordsmith!
Louis was a one of a kind! So glad he was asked to do Hello Dolly! Good call!
First Lady of the 20th Century. The only time I remember the entire panel standing to shake a guests hand.
Debbie Reynolds; THE Very Best voice disguise of all. It was funny and actually very adorable! In my opinion!
I often replay all Debbie Reynolds of WML ... and introduced her to my kids and grandkids, they were in shock to find out she was Princess Leia's mother ...
I love the way she gave her answers ....
SHE WAS A NATURAL BEAUTY 4 SURE !!! Rest her soul ~*
I actually thought her other appearance where she did the Hungarian accent was funnier. Don't know why they didn't include it here.

Every guest was off the charts amazing that appeared on What's My Line. The One & Only, Genuine Satchmo was nothing short of Wonderful ! 💜🎺🎺
I had never seen Arlene laughing so much.
Art Carney made several great appearances on the show and his talent for imitating famous people was impeccable.
She was so well respected in her lifetime there are not enough adjectives to describe everything she did to make this world a better world. One of life’s great mysteries is how very little is said about her in todays educational system. In todays world this could be fixed at the college level.
Louis Armstrong... what a great character he was... Love his voice!
Great memories. All these years later and I still love this show. Thank you for posting.
The guests were superlative. The host, a true professional in every sense of the word, and the panelists shone brightly. But my heart belongs to Arlene Frances. What a woman!
You can see why George loved Gracie. She is beautiful, funny, and endearing.
I'll have to look them up, born in 75, I just heard him talk at the very end , was that goerge burns?
She messed up by giving out his name.
@@donnawoodford6641 - In spite of her act, Gracie was a very smart lady. I think it was intentional.

John Daley was so articulate and amazing. That he could come up on the fly with some incredible answers and be so funny ad maintain a wonderful command of the English language, so such an amazing feat. Today it would NOT be allowed. Everything would have to be scripted!
Mr. Daly was a class act.
Brilliant man, as was Bennett Cerf
Indeed!
I love when he has to have a conference.🙃
Articulate and kind man with all of the guests. People in general had better language skills on tv. Now a days it’s very rough and crass language for the most part. My parents were of this generation and they never used a ‘ bad’ word in their home or otherwise. Different times.
Omg, Louis had to be my absolute favorite of all of these top 10 wonderful guests. What an incredible talent!!!
Probably one of the greatest panel shows of its time ever produced
I’ve found that young people - (the more sophisticated among them) - respond well to the understated style of communication of the people of the 1950s-1960s.
EVER !!
And, most likely, the last intelligent game show.
🥺
Yes this was the greatest panel show in history.
@@molly5292 so i take it you always know all the answers on Jeopardy??? smh................
This excellent compilation epitomizes why it was my favorite quiz show in those top mid-'60s years of television! Just so much great fun and laughs from this show plus "To Tell The Truth" "I've Got A Secret", "Password" and a secret look at people just being themselves, on "Candid Camera" airing just before this greatest-of-all tv quiz shows, "What's My Line?" The two biggest losses in the show's 17-year history (1950-67) were: Fred Allen, only 61 (May 31, 1894 - Mar. 17, 1956) and Dorothy Kilgallen, only 52 (Jul. 3, 1913 - Nov. 8, 1965). Both were irreplaceable, and deeply missed by the cast and the public.
Debbie Reynolds was so under-rated, truly talented, loved her.
I think she was overrated.
You need to Google what underrated means if you think Debbie Reynolds was underrated
She was beautiful
Margaret, she was underrated. In fact, I think she was a genius, and wish screenwriters and directors in the late 60s and 70s had been shrewd enough to take advantage of her brilliance and build pictures around her.
I think she was the first movie star, I had a crush on. Whenever 'How The West Was Won' was released.....I was still a little kid......but remember seeing it in one of those Cinema theaters. I recall being upset that she didn't hookup with Jimmy Stewart's character ( Linus, the mountain man )......but eventually ended up with Gregory Peck instead. I guess in retrospect......he was pretty cool also.
What class they all had!
Lucy, Louis Armstrong, Debbie Reynolds, and the formidable Eleanor Roosevelt. Wonderful to see them in a all"
It was so much fun watching What's My Line. I had some good laughs. Great entertainment!
It is Saturday March 22, 2020 and I have spent all day on the net due to this self quarantine. I got tired of all the Facebook post! This video boosted my feelings!
when you look up the definition of class..Eleanor Roosevelt's picture should be there..what an amazing woman
Gracie: Don't answer George........... I lost it
This was must watch TV every Sunday as a kid. Got to stay up late on a school night to see the great stars of the day just be themselves.
I thought Louis Armstrong was the best moment especially after that "Hello Dolly" sample he graced the panel and viewers with. And that's knocking it out of the park!
Debbie and Carrie together in heaven! Legends forever !
The parade of stars and well-known public figures on WML were astounding - but one of my undeniable favorites involved Louis Armstrong (38:09), who gave of his talent so freely as a MG, and whom the panelists and audience revered in unbridled and loving return. I ALWAYS cry when I see his segment...
How beautiful he sang that without any music! I just loved him and old enough to remember seeing him on TV.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who gets teary eyed when he sings. Such a talent!
Rosalind Russell was pure gold.....

@@justinmartyr4420 Check out the classic 'His Girl Friday'. That movie made her famous & she was well regarded in the industry through the late 1970s. A Hollywood Star, indeed.
@@patcurrie9888 or you could go even further back than that, with her appearance as Dame May Whitty's niece in "Night Must Fall," with Elizabeth Montgomery's father, Robert. That still gives me the creeps, years after first seeing it.
