I went to a theater with my girlfriend to see “The Batman” but we couldn’t catch the time and the only movie that was available at the time was “Everything Everywhere All At Once” so we went in it completely blind. No trailer or anything. Best decision we’ve ever made!
My best friend and I saw it completely blind on purpose. The only thing I knew about it was the two people specifically recommended that I see it. I was intrigued so I didn't look it up at all, and when I told my friend she hadn't heard of it either and came with me. It was so meaningful to both of us. Best theater experience of my life.
Mediocre philosophical overrated peace of meta forcing
I saw an article about it and once I saw who the lead was it didn't matter what the story was, I was gonna watch it.

Honestly both movies are great, any decision is still a good decision
Everything Everywhere changed my life. It represents a pivotal moment for me. I saw it almost a month after my mom passed away and it helped me process my grief. I saw so many reactions to EEAAO on CZcams where people were like “I need to call my mom and say ‘I love you’” when the film ended and I sat there thinking that I won’t be able to do that for the rest of my life. In a world filled with noise, I knew that the memories and the precious moments I had with her represent what matters most. Our lives are the memories we make along the way and I had to say goodbye to my mom but I will cherish the few special moments in my life with her and see her in my dreams. Moreover, Everything Everywhere helped me - as a gay man - understand how unconditional her love was for me despite what may have initially been disappointments she had about the direction my life has taken. What a tremendous experience that film was.

i recommend you the books of Ocean Vuong if you haven't read them already, they express grief from the loss of a mother very beautifully through poetry and memoir
This movie touched me deeper than any movie I've seen. My son told me to see it. At the end I was sobbing, and I didn't quite know why. The mother's fierce love for her daughter, and being able to meet and match her daughter's power directly, was one reason. Another was the scene of her defeating the people on the staircase - with kindness geared towards their deepest desires and needs. So many of the themes were profound. And at the same time it was crazy chaotic. Amazing. Take good care. 💕
Huh, it's funny that with such a subjective art form that I interpreted the rock scene so differently. For me, it represented the temptation of nonexistence (leading to the Bagel later) - to trade the chaos for stillness at the expense of life, but her mother pulled her away from being a rock for a purpose. Everything Everywhere All at Once really resonated for me as being a deeply anti-nihilistic message while at the same time acknowledging the emotional reality of nihilism and how living can feel so overwhelming, which made it all the more powerful. It was as if the Daniels were holding our hands and saying "yes, that feeling is real. Exist anyway. Connect with each other anyway." That was such a deeply important message right when I think people needed it the most. I sobbed when I watched it. I think they succeeded, and damn it caught me off guard.

that was my interpretation as well and what youve said about the Daniels essentially bringing this simple yet grand sense of comfort within all of this chaos- i had not been able to feel that before. not really from anyone or any form of media. as someone who has been struggling with my mental health for years now it felt like the movie was able to touch upon many layers upon layers of perspectives that ive come to adopt and it helped me feel acknowledged and seen for once, a kind of genuine validation i truly feel grateful for. i also thank Thomas for this because his video on the movie came to me as a wonderful preface before finally being able to give a head on dive into EEAAO.
Yes! It encapsulated all of my anti-sucidal ideation mantras and wrapped it in a nice little bow. It knows exactly why we should keep moving, keep trying, keep living. Favorite movie of all time and I don't care if that's a zoomer trait, its how I feel

This is why I can't deal with the "they don't make movies like they used to" crowd. Quality movies are coming out every year, and if you love film you ought to be out there supporting them instead of complaining on social media.
Discovering your channel has been one of the best things to happen to me this year. I finally got around to seeing Burning after all your very many attempts to get your viewers to see it.
Watching Burning, it amazed me how you spoke about it so many times and in different contexts and yet you managed to not give away any hint to how the plot of the movie ended up going. It's an incredible thing, to be so chatty about a movie you love and still giving nothing away.
For 2022, it has really been an amazing year for movies. I've been doing a lot of catching up in the past month after spending the first 11 months watching movies from the 20th century, some of which I got from your channel.
So much more to come in 2023.

Yes! Thank you for taking the words right out of my mouth and thank you Thomas! Burning, and Thomas' thoughtful breakdown of the film changed how I look at films, especially acting. I have been a self proclaimed film buff for most of my life, and that all changed following his thoughts on Burning, as well as the movie itself. I have never watched a film the same since and I realized quickly that my idea of being a film buff was nothing more than being able to lightly criticize films and be a wealth of facts regarding production and cast. I also fell in love with cinema again, after a very long break. Side note: Banshees and Nope are my two favorites from this year. I have watched those two films more since their release than I have seen new movies in the last five years.

Burning is an amazing film. Watched it 3 times and I'm still not sure what has happened in it, it's open to interpretations.

If you haven’t seen everything everywhere all at once just go watch it right now. I have never seen a movie that has such a perfect mix of crazy action sci-fi multiverse story, absurdist comedy and genuinely emotional heartfelt moments without any of the elements conflicting or overshadowing each other.
Ending was a letdown for me

Sometimes there are movies which I just can't undertand why are so highly valued, this was a solid 8/10 or 7.5/10, its was really good, but nothing really unique about it.

2022 will go down as one of the best years in cinema. it has been so fascinating especially in the horror genre. we got so many good original horror movies this year and great performances from many actresses and actors

Every year is great. You just have to find the good movies. Dig deep.
I dont know what youve been smoking to think this was a good year for film, but Id like some. The only movie on this list that was any good was Everything Everywhere All At Once and thats basically a remake of the movie "The One" from 2001 with worse action and a mindnumbingly dumb family subplot where 5 minutes in you already knew that it would end with the mother giving her depressed daughter a hug. This was the worst year in cinema in the past 50 years at least, and its not going to get any better next year because hollywood is creatively bankrupt, all the good writers left after their strike a decade ago didnt get them any better pay, and the entire industry has now run out of old scripts to recycle and classics to remake. Literally the only country producing good films is South Korea.

Everything Everywhere All At Once emotionally destroyed me. I saw it with my mother and partner, and the amount of LOVE the film has for our fellow people, even when it’s so hard to exist, I thought it was absolutely incredible.
Your videos, along with other Tom's, have really helped me reconnect with cinema this year and I'm very grateful to you both for it. Thanks for the passion and joy you bring to this :)
I totally agree with your list. I however would've had Aftersun as number 1. I've never been that moved, mesmerised or speechless after a film, but also never had that sort of deep emotional cry and sadness from a film ever (and I watch a lot). The naturalistic style of the film and the feeling you are a voyeur within the film was so engrossing and how Paul Mescal and the film shows there is something underlying, especially when you get a real confirmation at (for me) certain points of what he's been battling, the rug purchase, the spitting at the mirror and the walk into the sea. For such a "simple" looking film it carries so much detail in all aspects. I really loved how the glimpses of what he's battling and his love for his daughter but his pain and torment weigh more than any of it. From the start and throughout it's just perfect and it ends with that beautifully tragic crescendo of an ending.
side note: Avatar is stunning to look at, but it just feels like Ferngully but for the craft absolutely deserves in the top 10 list. X

As a person who doesn't understand movies very much and watches like 12 a year, I'd like to say that I'm very grateful for this channel. I've always focused more on the artistic side of videogames, so I know lots of analysts; essayists and reviewers. I started watching your stuff when Mark Brown (GMTK) shouted you out, and since then you're the only consistent source of movie info I got along with Mark Kermode (got any artistic non-pretentious movie reviewer recommendations?).
And as a video essay enjoyer, I always appreciate your curve balls and willingness to experiment with the format (especially with the Bo Burnham vid).
I was not expecting my favourite boy Kendrick to be in your top 10 movies list so you have me completely sold, I'm definitely watching all of these. Thanks for the list Thomas!

really cool that 'we cry together' from Kendrick is mentioned. I remember when I first heard that song and after I just stopped listening to the album. I felt so overwhelmed and just like he's describing with the number one spot, I took a step back and removed myself from the chaos. it felt so good.
I love the album version, but the MV version feels too artificial IMO

Thank you for profiling Decision to Leave. I don't think there has ever been a movie that made me want to have lunch with the director--to learn of all the things that I missed. It is absolutely packed with creative photography, dynamic directing and really great acting. I think I could find something new on a tenth viewing.
Didn’t knew your channel up until this video and I gotta say, your in-depth, superior, and honest analysis of each of these films really impressed me. I’m now a fan!
I’m so glad you included Top Gun: Maverick. I grew up with the original as my favourite movie and my friend group revolved around aviation and military experiences. I was incredibly cautious about getting my hopes up but it obliterated my expectations. The incredible use of real aircraft with the actors provided realism that was critical to the authenticity for aviation nerds like me. The manner in which they addressed every nostalgic touchstone without it being too much was masterful, even to their point that when I saw the F-14 my realisation of what was coming and how obvious it was set up but I was so engrossed that I missed it. It would have been easy for them to rely on CGI and that would have made the whole thing feel hollow. Excellent video as always, thanks!!
2022 was a wonderful year for cinema, and this video proves it. Thomas, your observation and analysis skills never cease to impress me! It's truly always a joy to listen to you dissect so intelligently each movie you choose to talk about, both in your videos and on your podcast with Tom!

The Banshees of Inisherin leave me with feelings that are hard to describe. I remember watching it on a rainy and windy afternoon. It feels very easy to enter into the film, feel the atmosphere that for me is strange and magical. This is the kind of movie that seems simple, maybe not everyone is interested in seeing it. But when you've watched it, really getting into that sensational movie is like entering another world in the middle of nowhere.
I really loved the setting of this movie too, it felt so unique and actually like another character in the movie.
Superb acting, breathtaking photography, exquisite music, lots of pints...A memorable movie.
I don’t remember the last time I watched a film that was so unrelenting bleak, yet so hilarious at the same time.

I loved it as well, but it is quite a unusual movie in terms of what it leaves you with? It felt magical and I will remember it for a long time is all I can say.
I didn't get any of that. I thought it was dull and extremely boring. The acting and filmmaking is great sure, but there was nothing else to it.
Massively agree on Everything Everywhere - I literally laughed and cried throughout. Incredible fun, silly and profound. Somehow it did the impossible in depicting a sense of infinity, without taking a brain-melting concept too seriously. One of my favourite films ever.

Bones and All is absolutely superb. A film that really stays with you.
Absolutely hated Tar. I just couldn't stand its pretentious presence and I walked out with a bad taste in my mouth. Just a bad movie all around in my opinion
I watched that Pinocchio version and man, what a surprise. It was wonderful and I might actually watch Shape of Water now. Few others on this list i haven't seen so I will check them out. I loved Babylon and Banshees of Inisherin, can't get two more different movies than those.

I have a movie list of my favorite movies, and I never thought any recent movie could overtake the movies that I adored so much. But then I saw Everything Everywhere All at Once, and that changed everything. It quickly became my #1 movie because of how it hit me emotionally, mentally, and physically! Everything Joy felt and how she reacted to Evelyn is spot on with my own life.

Great 2022 movie list Thomas, this year had a ton of bangers! To add to one of my fav movies of the year Aftersun, Paul Mescal's performance as Calum encapsulates a real struggle in today's world; a loss of hope. I felt connected to his journey through Sophie's memories; trying Tai-Chi, meditation and putting on a smile for his daughter only to still feel a level of mental anguish with his life.
Everything that he was told would help him feel better, even being grateful for having a beautiful daughter who loves and cares for him, he's still caught up in the pain within himself. A powerful journey to view on screen as it helps give perspective to other people going through a similar internal struggle.
To understand that you shouldn't fight every battle alone, especially the ones that go on in your head.

Aftersun was the best study of humans in 2022. And to think it's her (Charlotte Wells') directorial debut... Is she the next big director from Britain after Mike Leigh?
@@Kieslowski1989 100% with you there! But Wells is actually from Scotland! She studied at NYU Tisch. I actually haven't heard of Mike Leigh before, would you say his style is comparable or influential to Wells' work on Aftersun?
Flee is definitely in my top 10. There's something in the form of animated documentary that makes stories feel both universal and like the result of someone recalling and trying to make sense of their memories. The film reveals the reality of the refugee experience as a brutal arena of individuals forced to run on tightropes, held up only by their loved ones. Even if safety is found, that need to flee never really leaves someone who has ran for their life.
Can I just say that your video on Everything Everywhere All At Once struck me to my core in a way no CZcams essay has in years. Maybe ever.
I watched it with my partner and we after it ended we just sat there in silence.
Every. Single. Word. was perfectly chosen.
It was beautiful, devastating, terrifying, hopeful.

The place in The Banshees of Inisherin is incredibly important because of course it's a stand-in for the entirety of Ireland, and it's name even means island of Ireland in Irish Gaelic: Inis = Island (pronounced Inish) and Erin = Ireland. McDonagh did a great job with the film. Hope he wins the Best Original Screenplay Oscar.
For me this was the best movie of the year, I really did not expect it to be going in, I never watch trailers or read reviews beforehand.
I thought it was McDonaghs worse, it made no sense for Glesson's character to be chopping off his fingers.

Aftersun is the movie I kept thinking about after seeing it. My favorite of the year
Seeing David Lynch as John Ford is pretty wild to me. A director playing another director.
Spielberg also cast Truffaut as an actor in Close Encounters of the Third Kind.
I prefer Warner Hertzog in Jack Reacher.

I'm an old person who used to get all my news from the newspapers. The Fourth Estate is so important to the good health and well-being of our society. I remember the Pentagon Papers and Watergate because I picked up The Washington Post from my front doorstep, I didn't take The Boston Globe, but the exceptional work their Spotlight team did to expose the horrible things that priests did with the silent knowledge of the Catholic church was yet another victory for the people delivered by The Fourth Estate. Because of my deep love and appreciation for newspapers, "She Said" was high on my list of 2022 films.
Love your videos. Was wondering if you ever go out and watch "bad" movies. Every now and then I like to watch movies that I know have received poor reviews (like the new Halloween). I still find enjoyment in them and they help me keep perspective and appreciate "good" movies more.
A lots of great movies this year ( eg. Top Gun Maverick , Avator The Way Of Water & The Fabelmans ....etc ) .....but in next 10 or 20 years .....movie lovers and critics will still remember this iconic " Everything Everywhere All At Once " . This film deserved to win BEST PICTURE @Oscar2023.

I understand art is totally subjective but what I really don’t understand is the hype with your top film ‘rrr’. As much as I like Indian cinema, rrr just don’t work for me. Please help me understand. Would love to hear your opinion.
I've always been a huge fan of A24 movies, my wife... not so much. I told her we were going to see the multiverse movie, and she just assumed we were going to watch Dr. Strange. I mean, technically, it's not lying if I don't correct her assumptions. She was mad when we got there and she realised she wouldn't be watching a marvel movie.... but after the movie ended she was so glad we saw that instead. A week later, we watched Dr. Strange, and she confirmed how great eeaao was far superior in comparison. Truly a movie that sticks with you.

After a few years where nothing really grabbed me, I think 2022 was a strong year for films in general. My pick for the year would be Nope; a film part Jaws, part Close Encounter and part Signs. It felt like a film just made for me.
Heartily agree with your choices! Thanks for stumping for the Northman, I love how committed Eggers is to his research. I also appreciate you advocating for Fabelmans. It wasn't my favorite movie of the year, but it's probably my number 5 as well. It's surprisingly complex, and at almost 40 I see a lot to really empathize with. It's also surprisingly weird and funny.

I really liked how Tom van der Linden came in for a discussion about one of the films. It was such a good cross over in the video essayist realm: Thomas Flight turns into CoM turns back into just Thomas Flight.
Super interesting list. Adding a suggestion that will for sure fly under the radar is “Good Luck to You Leo Grande”. It’s a humble movie that is super paired down to my favourite backbone of movies in general: excellent acting and writing with no other frills or subterfuges. I think the grandiosity of the director lies on the fact that they serve the story, they don’t use it to stand out.
The main character is an older woman, the characters are profoundly human, flawed, complex, but capable of learning and redemption, and the subject is something that the deeply ingrained misogyny in the world at large has always deemed unworthy of the big screen, especially in such a direct and unapologetic approach. Emma Thompson is by far one of the greatest actors alive and couldn’t be more raw, convoluted and simply brilliant as the star.
TAR is such a layered, well-directed ntm impeccable acting showcase from Cate Blanchett.
It's really reductive when people call it MeToo or cancel culture movie, it's dense and does not spoon-feed the audience. People generally don't like that. They want expositions, everything deciphered out.
The ending of TAR for me wasn't about her being cancelled, it's about an artist who loved art but was so subsumed by her own ego that she began to believe she's the art. The ending was about the sublimation of her ego and identity. Wearing headphones indicates, she's no longer a human metronome who marks time.
The film is somewhat less inspired and well-crafted than it actually seems. It is Blanchett's performance that elevates it into the extraordinary. It's easily the most accomplished performance of the year.
@@ozvoyager Michelle Yeoh and Cate Blanchett should be neck and neck this year for Best Actress. Both performances were absolutely astonishing.
@@skermani Watch any documentary about Leonard Bernstein. You'll quickly see that his hauteur, condescension and narcissism is almost identical to Tar's. So hardly surprising that Blanchett has referenced him in interviews.

@@skermani As a writer. (with 40 years experience) I'd say the opposite is true. It's not remotely a "well-crafted" film, since it's not even really trying to obey the standard three-act structure. So the film itself is, by choice, a rambling, undisciplined piece that only begins to obey any of the rules of story toward the very end. Blanchett's phenomenal performance is (at least for the first hour) the only thing that holds it together.

about what you call sincerity with maverick and avatar, ive really missed that a lot with modern movies, i miss when movies wore their heart on their sleeve and waxed poetic, and unabashedly loved the things or people they were about. comedies of old werent laden with layers upon layers of irony, i feel like weve lost that a bit along the way, so its nice to see top gun and avatar bring that straight cut style of filmmaking back again a bit.
Thomas, your feeling about "Triangle" is spot on. Such a beautiful example of satire, something we are losing an appreciation for.

Great picks on this list -- Triangle of Sadness is 100% my movie of the year. Dolly de Leon's character, the perfect uppercut in this unhinged satire, had me hooting and hollering (reader, if you're able to see it on a big screen, DO IT. the audience experience is raucous). I love her and what/who she represents.
Sadly, I missed it on the big screen. Had a fairly brief run at my local arthouse cinema. will have to watch it on streaming.
I finally watched it, and I couldn't stop cringing through the whole movie. I laughed a few times, and I guess it's a good commentary on class, but everyone in it is just SO horrible... Painful experience.
So glad to see Nope and Triangle of Sadness on the list. Haven’t see Tar. But Babylon is missing and it is incredible. Like, can’t look away incredible.

This has been a pretty exciting year for cinema. The kind where picking just 10 favorites is harder than usual.
I appreciate that you give Avatar : The Way of the Water credit. It's been controversial, in large part because it's under the Disney umbrella. I think you touched on what I perceive to be James' intention behind this series. He wants to help people see how incredible and indeed magical the world we live in is. There are parallels to systems here on Earth and those on Pandora. I also get really taken in by Zoe Saldana's performance, she's so convincing as a mother. Then there's all the technical aspects of making the film and underwater acting, the commitment from everyone involved. I'm glad it was successful. However, I don't like 3D. Some people swear by it but I saw it in both formats and personally I prefer traditional 2D.

James Cameron is a genius. Truly an artist, a crowdpleaser, an innovator and a moneymaking juggernaut. Perhaps it doesn't hit me as well as a film tailored to my niche, sure, but in the arena of blockbusters he's in a league of his own. Wish film critics online put some respect on his work, beyond obligatory praising of the technology
Cameron's films are stunning and technical marvels. I deeply appreciate his commitment to constructing the Avatar world and its inhabitants. Despite what I'm about to say, I still enjoyed it. I struggled, however, with Jake's motivations enough to pull me out of the movie a number of times. To avoid spoilers, I'll avoid specific examples. In general terms, the Jake of this movie behaves differently than the Jake we had come to know toward the end of the first film. That decisive warrior leader of mythological stature is missing from too much of this movie. I know Cameron tries to justify Jake's changed behavior, but I don't buy it. Jake's behavior doggedly runs contrary to what the other characters close to him want and need. Jake's forced motives serve to drive the plot and provide him with an artificial arc. Cameron still could have offered us his cinematic wonders and adventures without violating Jake's character. Instead, Cameron weighed the story down with a plot device versus what should have naturally come next for his own main character.

I recently finished seeing "Banshees of Inesherin" and oh man, what a glorious film, this year was Colin Farells year, im a huge fan of him, and seeing the range hes acomplished its so wholesome, "After Yang" (without Farell in it) wouldnt be the same, one of my favorite movies from this year too. For me, Tar is a masterpiece from Todd Field. I loved the cinematography which included many wide shots. Cutting tight shots together in a scene with talking heads is a sign of amateurism. This is restrained, tasteful, and filled with sublime suspense. So many good choices. Superb.

I was also dazzled by this movie. Everything about its craft and the way it delivers information to the audience (visually, sonically, and narratively) showed a mastery of filmic control, which complimented the themes very well. The thing that really snuck up on me were some of the one-ers that permeate the movie. I think they are some of the most subtle but effective uses of one-take camera work I've seen. The teaching scene in particular was breathtaking in its use of a single take that isn't showy or command attention to itself, but instead focuses on the contrasts in character movement and blocking throughout the duration, largely following Tár as she moves from being on stage to walking out through the theater seating, literally and figuratively putting distance between her and Max the student. I also don't think I've ever felt so much tension from seeing someone's leg shaking.

Thomas Wright’s “The Stranger” (Netflix) was phenomenal. Just phenomenal. Sad to see it being so overlooked in all these “end of the year” lists.

10. Glad you have Northman on your list. It’s one of my favorites not only because the historical epic is my favorite genre ever and I only want the genre to be expanded and made into one of the most important genres explored in the coming years, there is such attention to detail. Cinematography and production design is astounding.
7b. With Maverick, I agree. Not only it’s super emotional but it truly captures the life of being a soldier. I like military stories and it brought it all back to me after they haven’t made many lately.
2. Classical music is the only music I truly understand and connect with most so I didn’t find the conversations about it pretentious. Cate talking about the soul of music hit me in my sweet spot the way Robin Williams glorifies poetry in Dead Poets Society. Maybe I am pretentious too 😆

I don't think Tar was trying to portray classical music itself pretentious, but that the world and culture around it today as being pretentious.

I just saw Avatar in the theatres just yesterday, and it had quite an impression that I think you capture really well. I think as a screenplay, it has many holes, and it is hard to feel fully moved by the film. However, it was such a tour de force visually along with having such a heart to remind me, at least, in the power of acceptance in family, in friendships, in outsiders. It is hard to deny the passion James Cameron poured into the movie.

I think Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio was one of the best films I've ever seen, let alone of 2022. Not only from an artist standpoint, but the story itself is touching and compelling. I highly recommend watching it, though I don't think it would compare to the experience of seeing it on the big screen. It honestly took my breath away.

I don't know how many times I've tried to finish this movie but can't. Something about Del Toro's infantalizing moviemaking style turns me off. I wonder if Andrew Stanton of Wall-E or Pete Docter of Up could have saved this film. And don't get me started on Shape of Water.
EEAO, was absolutely incredible, an absolute masterpiece in storytelling and cinema. I’ll have to check out the rest of the movies on this list because I value the opinion you have on most of the videos you make. :)
EEAO was like a MCU film that was co-opted by true cinema, great actors, and a heartfelt script. LOL Check out The Menu, my 2nd favorite film of the year. I'm shocked it didn't make his Top 10 List.
