RRR is still my pick for the best film of the year. And then The Quiet Girl.
I know what wins my award for best Dan Murrell video of the year--this video! From the quirky categories and superb selections to the lighting and editing, everything in this video was to my liking. Thanks, Dan!
Wow, thank you!
Colin Farrell definitely killed it this year. He definitely deserves a nomination 👏
thanks for including RRR. I saw it in theaters in March in USA. the theater was wild with whistles and screams
So jealous, the movie wasn´t in theaters at my country, I watched in on TV (three times)
Here’s my top 10:
1. The Fablemans
2. Everything Everywhere All At Once
3. RRR
4. The Batman
5. Puss in Boots: The Last Wish
6. TÁR
7. The Menu
8. Chip n Dale: Rescue Rangers
9. The Black Phone
10. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever
Always love it when I leave a one of these videos with a bunch of movies to check out! Saw Breaking and Emily the Criminal in theaters on Dan’s recommendation and was blown away so am really excited to check out Resurrection, Brian and Charles, White Noise, Tar, etc.
I hope there will be time for another podcast episode with Joe and Spencer some time soon. It’d be so fun to hear the iconic trio talking about the year’s movies - or about anything else honestly
Emily the criminal is a lot of fun.
A podcast with Joe and Spencer? I haven't seen that - was it patrons only?
@@OneTraveller nope not patrons only just go to the Dan Murrell Podcast feed and look in the ones that came out in November 2022 for “SPECIAL: 3 Friends: Origins - Begins (Again)”
Great episode!! I love this series every year. Thanks for an amazing 2022, Dan.
Mia Goth is unbelievable in Pearl. The monologue, the end credits, incredible stuff. So sad she won’t be recognized for it.
And she's stunningly gorgeous. A 10 out of 10.
It’s been awesome watching your channel grow this year, congrats on the success. You’re one of the best critics doing it right now
Love the creative special awards, love the overview of the entire year of movies, love your pov, love everything xoxo
Been a fan of yours since Screen junkies. What a great year of your content. Here's to an even better 2023🥂
These are always some of my favourite awards for films, along with The Weekly Planets. Half serious, half joking, not pretentious at all just talking about films.
Dan isn't trying to prove 'he knows films' or that one type of movie is better than another, simply stating what his favourites were throughout the year, and what made him laugh due to the weird acting or directing choices.
It isn’t the end of the year without “The Game is On” Award.
Yesss the weekly planet!!
Mr Sunday Movies??
Loved this episode. Great picks for the favorites but also loved all the other awards and recognitions. Had me giggling through all of the Special Awards.
I always love hearing your thoughts. Even when we disagree I always admire your thoughtfulness and thoroughness when it comes to reviewing. You have such a respect for the creators in the industry even when you don’t particularly enjoy a film, which I really appreciate. Thanks for the stellar content Dan, and happy new year!
A really thoughtful list! Lots of my favourites landed on it. Thank you Dan! Happy 2023!
Well, Mia Goth did get an Independent Spirit Award nomination for Pearl, so that's something...
The special awards are awesome! Wow, how did you even think about that. So creative!
Dan, you made me watch RRR and no regrets, thank you so much!!
Recently checked out Brian & Charles at a local festival because of your recommendation. Really enjoyed it! Especially with the crowd laughing along throughout. Great experience :)
What a phenomenal year for movies. My favorite film of the year was RRR, but it easily could have been EEAAO, the fablemens, TÁR, Top gun, glass onion, Aftersun, Banshees of Inisherin, etc.
Your superlative awards for obscure categories is my new favorite thing!
Thanks for a lot of great content throughout 2022 Dan!
i imagine Aftersun wasn't mentioned here because of how recent the film is. Because, in my view, it would easily make a Top 10 in ANY given year, what a tremendously impactful piece of cinema.
It s fantastic.
+1 for Aftersun. I didn’t even understand why I was crying at the end. I had to look up the plot to understand why I was in shambles
Thanks for all the videos this Dan. Hope 2023 is a good year for you.
Was looking forward to this video of yours! Love the extra categories in the beginning 🤗 After having watched it for the third time this year on Boxing Day, I have to conclude that Topgun Maverick was my favourite of the year!
As always, Thanks Dan! Been looking forward to this!
I MISS YOU DAN ON MOVIE FIGHTS.. YOU'RE THE G.O.A.T!!! HAVE A GREAT NEW YEAR
"Speak no evil" is primarily a Danish movie even if there are Dutch influences! Other than that a great episode with lots of good recommendations on movies that perhaps could have been missed otherwise! I enjoy your work but of course miss you inside the context of Fandom and movie fights but I am happy to see you do what you love!
1. TAR
2. THE BANSHEES OF INISHERIN
3. EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONCE
4. RRR
5. DECISION TO LEAVE
6. TOP GUN: MAVERICK
7. PINOCCHIO
8. WHITE NOISE
9. BRIAN & CHARLES
10. TRIANGLE OF SADNESS
Really love your videos! Have a good new year! Looking forward to seeing what you have in 2023. (Been a fan since before movie fights)
My compliments.
Very nuanced, in depth and objective.
Keep up the good work!
I LOVED the Special Awards. Laughed so much. Please do it again next year!
I love the special awards that you have at the beginning of the video!
Wow, I didn't watch any "Blonde" reviews because I was excited to see it but haven't had a chance to watch it yet... I think you've just saved me 3 hours.
Hi Dan, Saw RRR when you mentioned it over the summer, and glad to see it here. Can't wait to see Decision to Leave and Tar, thanks for this video!
I added Decision to Leave and Tar to my list after watching this. You mentioned most if not all of the movies that I enjoyed the most this year. One that I went to see solely because of your review and ended up really liking was Vengeance. Making a top 10 for this year will be tough because there were a lot of really good movies that I enjoyed a similar amount but that were also very different from one another.
I was questioning my sanity because I didn't see a lot of buzz for Tar, and it was my favourite movie of the year... But now my favorite critic is talking about it. This is why I follow you, Dan. I can always count on you for great recommendations.
Great review and loved the extra awards at the beginning 👍🏻👍🏻 I second that Emily the Criminal is worth your time
Amazing video dan! Was looking for some movie recommendations and got loads from this, was just expecting a top 10 and now I most likely have more than I'll be able to make it through haha
Appreciate you very much Dan. Love the channel, love your voice and opinions of movies. Cheers!
Great list Dan. I still have not seen “Tar”. It’s been on my to watch list but now I really want to see it. Take care and have a Happy New Year!
Great list, thanks Dan. Noted a few I wasn’t aware of.
I can't believe that Utama made your list! Greetings from Bolivia, Dan, I love your reviews
Awesome list! There's now at least five movies I hadn't heard of that you've made me want to go check out
Thanks for another interesting, thoughtful and intriguing Best and Worst, Dan! The movies can be many things to many people and I think your list captures that well. The biggest movie of the year, wildly inventive historical epics and dimension-hopping fantasy, small character pieces and more.
Now thats a good recap. I will be coming back to watch me through your list!
Great video to sum up the year, looking forward to watch the ones I didn't!
So glad you mentioned The Barbarian. Loved it!
What a great year in movies, glad Dan was there through it all. Looking forward to more. Everything, Everywhere, All At Once and RRR both made my top 5 this year as well!
my 1 and 2
Thanks for giving your top and bottom picks, Dan. Maverick was definitely my favourite film of 2022, since it was more mature in tone than its predecessor.
Always glad to see your lists and awards, this time I did manage to watch most of the movies you mentioned
I'm trying to make my own list for the very first time in my life, but no one never told me how difficult it is to make one, there were so many great movies
Your categories are HILARIOUS! I want to see "Most Acting" at next year's Oscars!
As always, an excellent video, Mr. Murrell.
The Fablemans is one of my favorites of the year.
1. The Batman
2. The Northman
3. Top Gun
4. RRR
5. The Fablemans
6. All Quiet on the Western Front
7. The Black Phone
8. Decision To Leave
9. Banshees of Inisherin
10. Everything Everywhere All At Once
Hey Dan...its Logan, been awhile, but just wanted to comment and just wanted to thank you for the amazing content that you put out. I absolutely agree, this was the year of Colin Farrell. Happy New Year and can't wait to see what 2023 brings.
Love your list! Insightful commentary about this past year's movies. I agree with your opinion on Blonde: had to turn it off. Thanks for including some under the radar movies such as Brian and Charles.
Yay! Always love tuning into your videos!
I FINALLY got round to watching RRR last night. Man. What a brilliant film. I literally loved every single minute. I'm absolutely gutted I missed out on this in the cinema. It's one of my films of the year for sure. Annoyingly there's not an original audio version on Netflix, so I watched it with the hindi audio and English subtitles. I found the English dub more distracting. The Hindi dub (although not the original language) seemed to fit way better.
It's honestly the most fun I've had with a movie in ages. Truly brilliant.
It's definitely in my top 5 too.
What a hugely entertaining video. loved it!!
Excellent lists, Dan!
This a really good video. Thanks!
Finally Dan talked about RRR (I didn't expect it to be no 5) now I can rest in peace
I'll say this, I look forward to your list more than any other content creator in the film & TV space. Not because I don't value other opinions, but it's been years and your reviews and takes hew as close as I've found to my own. I can always count on some new international films I haven't heard of to check out, or indies that went under the radar.
Your end of the year lists for me aren't just some kind of validation for the films I know are going to be on a dozen other lists I'll watch this week. They're projects for me to watch a half dozen new films I know I'll enjoy.
RRR in top 5! WOW So Happy Thank you Dan for including it in top 5. We are grateful that you enjoyed RRR so much. Love from India. The film has everything to offer all range of emotions & Naatu Naatu is just on another level. yeah it's one of the best theatre experience I ever had & if you get a chance please watch it in a theatre in the future. India has a lot of great films this year & next year we will have a another big year worldwide
SS Rajamouli is so far ahead of his South Indian contemporaries, he makes it look easy. I hope more people now go back to his earlier films like Magadheera (2009), Baahubali (2015, 2017), and whatever the hell that fly-reincarnation movie is, thanks to RRR.
I didn't expect that
I really wanted to see RRR but the theatrical distribution was so sloppy on the film. I couldn’t find it anywhere, then, when I did, it was a theater an hour from home, too late at night to make it a viable option.
I don’t stream and it’s never been made available on physical media so that one is sadly lost to the ether.
I did get to see Laal Singh Chaddha and absolutely loved it! Another I wish could see a physical release for rewatching.
Indian folks acting like they personally made RRR
@@encased3427 we do that a lot
If someone from our country does something great then we feel so proud of him/her. It feels like someone from our family has achieved something.
Such a great list. Def going to add several of these movies to my watch list for the start of 2023 when most of these movies will be available to me.
Nice video. You clearly put a lot of effort in. Also loved Tár. I had some problems with it, including a 5 minute end credit sequence that played at the start of the movie (wtf?) but it was memorable and great. Cate is on another level.
I love how you give reasons for who and why they would enjoy a particular film.
Thank you. youve given me some interesting things to think with, I like hearing your straight up recap and non pretentious point of view on film. Cheers!
I’m so happy you mentioned Mia Goth! She gave my favorite performance this year, she’s incredible. 🎉
I think it was a great year for movies. We got a little bit of everything. We got original movies like Everything Everywhere All at Once and the Menu. We got movies that gave us that classic cinematic experience like Top Gun: Maverick, The Batman and Avatar 2. Some great foreign films like RRR and the Banshees of Inisherin. And surprises like Puss n Boots: The Last Wish and del Torro’s Pinocchio. It was also a great year for horror movies. I could go on but you get my point.
Thanks for this Dan.
Thanks for the list Dan!

RRR is easily my movie of the year - you can feel the filmmaker's energy in virtually every frame!
@Siddharth Sriram finally someone with courage. Agree with you.
@@siddharthsriram2685 try reading the disclaimer for the movie sometimes. but also British were assholes.
@@siddharthsriram2685 almost everyone in our AP and TS states knows its fiction. It's not our fault other states are ignorant. It may not be accurate history but the things British did were shown accurately in the movie.
Agree, my favorite movie or the year, I almost forget what I loved about movies when I was younger and I founded it in RRR
@Siddharth Sriram You do realize it's a fictional, almost fantastical, movie, right? WTF is wrong with u?
Why u tryna find some history lesson in it?
Enjoy a movie for movie's sake, sometimes. Not everything has to be 100% accurate to real life. It's an action entertainer, not a (based-on-a-true-story) historical drama.
And the OP didn't even mention anything about any of the aspects that u talked about in ur comment, yet here u r trying to ruin his love for the film.
Everyone's loving it for how entertaining it is, but some of u mfs just wanna find political angles in everything & hate it & ALSO Make Sure Everyone Else hates it too.
Hi Dan, this comment is late but thank you for putting Emily The Criminal under my radar. I brought it as soon as I saw it on streaming and really enjoyed it! Hope you do another Sundance video this year.
Mane, you unlock a memory with that Highlights reference!!
I haven’t been seeing any love for All Quiet on the Western Front in many of these top 10 lists which is disappointing, but it is great to see so much love for RRR!
Great list!! ‘Tar’ is my favorite movie of this year. I’ve seen it three times and I always see something different. I would have had ‘triangle of sadness’ and ‘The Batman’ higher on my list. But I’m glad you had it on your top ten. It was great that you had recognized ‘RRR’ and ‘Speak No Evil’. Few movies you missed I feel: ‘You Are Not Alone’, ‘Aftersun’, ‘All Quiet On The Western Front’ and ‘Stars At Noon’….
Happy New Year Dan!
Our favourites this year were (theatre) Everything Everywhere all at Once, & (online) A Christmas Story Christmas. Biggest waste of an evening were Thor 4 & Morbius. Black Adam was "good".
Both of those characters being simultaneously right and wrong in the one take scene in Tar is just phenomenal writing. Just an incredible scene.
I didn't know about Tar; I will be looking for it. Banshees of Inisherin is also intriguing. Your venom for Disney's Pinocchio remake vs your delight for GDT's Pinocchio is delicious to watch.
Dan, you should watch Aftersun and Cha Cha Real Smooth, too
Watched both and enjoyed them!
Thanks Dan. You and Jeremy are the modern Roger and Ebert (though separate channels)! Even if I don't catch the film, I feel I know what it's about after your reviews.
Interesting video and categories. Nice
great input, still have a lot of these on my "to watch list"
Thanks to Banshees of Inisherin, "are we rowing?" is in the dialogue my wife and I use weekly now 🤣❤️
I'm gonna be a year behind, but what a wonderful list of movies to check out! (And a few to avoid!). Thanks for the reviews, Dan!
I've watched alot of top movies from alot of usual people in the space but I really enjoy you've separated this in to award categories works well and please stick to it because makes you stand out, just because of this I will watch your end of year stuff
P.s maybe rename the title in future because I nearly didn't click out of being exhausted from everyone else's top movies, just call it awards or something, again coming from love broski
Thanks Dan🖤
I'm definitely going to checkout these movies Dan.. thx (nitpicking.. can you add the posters more?)
Love Dan's categories, this is how the Oscars get their audience back, have categories like this!!
Great list! All Quiet on the Western Front was also one of my favorite of 2022
While I've seen six of the honorable mentions, the top ten surprised me: I hadn't seen a single one! It'll be fun making my way through the list in these cold winter months. I'll probably spoil myself with Tár first: that looks amazing. Thanks Dan!
You haven't even seen Top Gun: Maverick? Definitely see that one after Tár then, fully lives up to the hype!
@@Bruester Not yet, but flying jets through mountains does sound like a good time.
@@rew_mate lol.. well that is the only reason to see it so you might not enjoy it as much as most. It is exactly the same emotional moments from the first with star wars trench run. Just as absurd/entirely unrealistic military situations and just as entertaining of a roller coaster ride. Like Avatar, it is a visually stunning theme park ride with storyline being basic movie tropes. If you can get on board with a movie that is just a fun ride, you will enjoy it.
EEAAO is my #1 by far.
@@curtisbme but it still feels something unique from other movies and really feels like a roller coaster ride
@@arpitshivhare217 How the aerial scenes were shot is certainly what feels unique as no flight footage in a movie has felt/been that real. If someone doesn't care for that action, they won't care for the movie (though I'm not sure how someone wouldn't be enthralled by that action).
The rest of it is literally just copy and paste from the previous movie so nothing unique there, just nostalgia 'member-berries.
Colin Farrell also gave a great performance in the Ron Howard directed film “Thirteen Lives” (available to stream on Amazon Prime), which also just happens to be in my Top Ten Movies Of 2022 list, with the #3 spot to be exact! Super underrated movie for this year that I haven’t heard many people talking about, almost at all…
Thanks for the list, it was very fun to see!
My favorite was Everything Everywhere All at Once, with Banshees of Ineshiren and Nope close behind. I haven't put together my list beyond that, and haven't seen a ton of movies this year, but I expect Pinocchio, Turning Red, The Janes, and possibly Lightyear will make the list. I still need to see a few more before I decide.
In not seeing a lot, I luckily didn't see anything I didn't like. I didn't love Maverick like many have, but I can't really say much against it, and I wonder if my opinion would be different if I'd been able to see it on the big screen.
Either way, it's been a good year for movies and I look forward to catching up on a few soon. 🙂
Yes! Someone else with TÁR as their #1! And the underappreciated Brian and Charles!
May 2023 bring us even more treasures in the world of movies!
That was really entertaining 🔥🔥🤟🏼
White Noise was just released on Netflix, Friday the 30th. I'm looking forward to watching it, thanks Dan!👍
I've now got a lists of movies I need to find (which is trickier than I thought in this fractured landscape of theaters, streaming services, etc.), but looking forward to the journey.
