I can appreciate a critic that can say “I appreciate it, but its not my thing”
Thank you!
That's usually what I say about most "Oscar hopeful" flicks.
It's why Dan was and continues to be my favorite critic. I'm waiting for him to start his own award show, I know I emailed plans for one a few years ago.
I actually watched Spirited Away recently, and that's almost exactly what I said about it. It was a good movie, it just wasn't my cup of tea.
This is why Dan is one of the best critics out there
I can confirm that Soul is super accessible to kids. My 7 year old daughter has seen it 5x already and loves it
Agreed on that! I have an 8 and a 6 yr old that have seen it 4 times!
I think this is a common thing for white critics to say about films like this... Glad your daughter liked it...I suppose they don't look at a Jamie Foxx led film the same way..
@@benwelington3124 I think you're inferring something in Dan's review that isn't there. But thank you, yes. My daughter loves music and enjoys this film very much
@@KnightFallProd I try not to and appreciate to reply... but as a Black filmmaker "inaccessible" is a label I here often about work I do featuring Black characters.
Omg I didn't know John Batiste did some of the musical score for Soul. Good for him!
He was also the model for Joe's hands. There's extras on Disney + where they show the process of filming his hands and transforming into animation. Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross also did part of the score.
the guy that wrote 'head like a hole' don't have no soul.. hah. Much like the film itself, they added the Black music after the one Black exec at Pixar was like "So we really gonna make a movie called Soul without any????"
The invisible man had to be one of the best movies I've seen this year. Honestly, AMAZING.
Always appreciate your insight Dan. Thanks for the recommendations 😊
I didn't get to see many movies.
I really enjoyed *Emma*. I was so thrilled to have historically accurate dress for once, and the whole thing was a fun and colorful escape.
Emma was the last movie I saw in theaters
Dan, this is what I have been waiting for!! I love hearing your movie lists - I know you are the numbers-guy but love hearing about big and especially small movies on your list.
I appreciate all your videos. Thank you for your work.
As a lifelong fan of Artemis Fowl, that movie broke something deep deep inside me.
Great list Dan! “The Assistant” was my favorite film of 2020. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
If you haven't seen it yet, please, watch "His House" on Netflix. It came out in September and it's a horror film that is in the same lines as the quiet, thoughtful ones you like such as Hereditary. Yes, it's spooky and unsettling but it's also heartbreaking with absolutely beautiful direction and fantastic performances that will keep with you long after the credits roll. The story on the surface seems simple, a Sudanese refugee couple flee their war torn country to England but they are followed by something supernatural. But it is so much deeper than that. I think this film would easily make your top ten list.
Dan's editing has always been underrated.
Hey Dan love your channel and so happy you made the transition to your own channel.
I loved your list!!! Promising Young Woman was definitely my favorite movie of 2020. :)
Another Round ( Druk in Danish), starring Mads Mikkelsen, is probably my favorite movie of 2020, its so good
On my list of what I need to catch up on.
This is the list i want to see, you and Cinefix
My top 10:
1-Mangrove
2- Lovers Rock
3- Minari
4-Nomadland
5- Black bear
6-Im thinking of ending things
7-Another round
8- Promising young women
9- Da 5 blood
10- Tenet
Always love watching your videos Dan and growing my watchlist with your recommendations.
Everyone, become a Patron! It’s worth it!
@James Traynor Not everyone does, and that’s completely understandable. I was just spreading the word for anyone considering/curious about joining the Patreon. His lowest tier is $5 a month, which is cheaper than most streaming services. Plus, with an annual subscription, you get a month free.
If someone has the means to do so, I’d highly recommend it. If not, I know Dan appreciates the views and likes here on CZcams just as much :)
Happy new year Dan!
Hello from Little Rock! Glad you're here in Arkansas now. Thanks for the video--great work as always!
I'm used to seeing several "best of /worst of" lists every year and most of the time my sentiments align closely to the reviewers. This year, I've only seen a few lists and they've highlighted just how many movies I've MISSED this year. I'll be referring back to this list over the next few months trying to catch up. Thanks for expanding my view of what's available, Dan.
It’s been so long since I’ve watched a movie...not being able to go to the theater really put a damper on my enthusiasm for movies for some reason
Not for me. I think that since the theater is closed I’ve watched more movies than I have in years
I was like that all year, until my friend sent me his top ten and I do one every year too so it kinda lit a fire under my butt to catch up!
I remember last year waiting for you and Roth to finally give us your best of 2019, how time flies...
I still need to see Nomadland, promising Young Woman, The Father, One Night in Miami, First Cow, never Rarely Sometimes Always, and The Sound of Metal, but my favorites so far are:
Emma, Palm Springs, Host, Trial of the Chicago 7, Soul, Wolfwalkers, Black Bear, and Bad Education.
Highly recommend I'm Thinking of Ending Things. My favorite of the year!
Loved the video Dan! A couple that might make my list that I recommend: Small Axe (prime) - especially Lovers rock and Mangrove, could be a fun comparison to Chicago 7. His House (Netflix) - joe Starr also a big fan of this one. The Vast of Night (Prime) - fun throwback low budget sci-fi.
Great list! I thought Vast of Night would have made it but I'll have to check out a few of those I haven't seen.
Dan, definitely make sure to watch Another Round if you haven't yet - it's my favorite of the year (Sound of Metal is #2). I have yet to see The Father, but it sounds awesome.
Thank you for mentioning Palm Springs, that was my favorite movie of the year.
"Top o' the mornin'" 😂Appreciated the Artemis Fowl clips. What a movie.
Loved your list Dan - I was glad to see we've got a lot of similar picks. I wanted to recommend you, if you haven't seen, "Pieces of a Woman"' - it's just came out on Netflix and it's glorious.
A super small indie movie that came and went that was my fav of the year was Yellow Rose. Worth checking out!
I watched Invisible Man when you recommended it and I really enjoyed it. It was one of my favorite 2020 films
Also watched Palm Springs when you recommended it. And I really liked it
Hey Dan, long time fan! I doubt you’ll see this but if it’s possible, could you do a series on Irish movies like The Commitments, The Guard, The Snapper etc? You could do it for St Patrick’s day etc . We have so many incredible filmmakers, actors etc who rarely get noticed
Great job as always! Did you happen to see The Vast of Night? It’s on my top 10 list this year, it’s worth your time if you haven’t seen it.
Great list, lots of overlap with my own.
LOVE the Artemis Fowl call out... was a huge fan of the books as a kid, and the movie was just an atrocious trainwreck.
To me the greatest theater experience was seeing Another Round (Druk). The theaters here in Denmark have been open for most of the year, and I was lucky enough to get to watch an early screening with a live performance from Scarlet Pleasure (the band who does the "theme song"). It is absolutely worth checking out as a meditation on alcohol in general and specifically more as a closer look on the role alcohol plays in the danish society. It also has one of the best ending I've seen in a while.
Great list, Dan. I think for me, i would put Mangrove from the Small Axe series above Trial of the Chicago 7. Similar types of movies but Mangrove felt more subtle and personal.
Excellent picks! 2020, though an incredibly difficult year, featured a lot of wonderful films. Out of the films you mentioned that you haven't seen, these are the ones that I really loved:
American Utopia
The Assistant
The Father (Btw, the poster you featured for that film is for a different film of the same title that also came out last year. I believe you were referring to the Anthony Hopkins film)
Never Rarely Sometimes Always
One Night in Miami...
I hope you're able to check those films out soon because I believe you'll enjoy them very much.
Also, this is my top 10 of the year:
10. The Assistant
9. Wolfwalkers
8. Palm Springs
7. Black Bear
6. Possessor Uncut
5. Never Rarely Sometimes Always
4. Promising Young Woman
3. Nomadland
2. The Father
1. Soul
the whiplash reference is appreciated!
Much love for Jon Batiste! Thanks for highlighting his jazz contributions Dan, I thought they really kicked 😎
Just curious, where would you rank Tenet? Close to the middle of the pack, just missing the honorable mentions?
Great list and Iove the "I appreciate it but it is not my thing" thingy. Since you have asked and everybody seems to miss it. My top movie of the year is the Netflix documentary "The Three Deaths of Marisela Escobedo". If you have 100 min to spare, you wont regret it, if you haven't already seen it.
You really should watch "Another round". My favorite movie of 2020
As a teacher in training who likes drinking a lot that movie felt like a personal attack
thank you. i saw this a few weeks ago and have been telling friends about it. it is so good.
Hey Dan, I don't know if you've seen these, but this are some recommendations from my favorites of last year: Bloody nose, empty pockets and Collective are fantastic documentaries; the 5 films from the Small Axe anthology from Steve McQueen; and Undine, which is a German movie i adored
Great list. I agree! I would’ve included Ma Rainey, but I respect your opinion. Make sure you see One Night in Miami, I’m Thinking of Ending Things, The Boys in the Band, The Forty-Year-Old Version, and the Small Axe film series on Amazon before you do your next update... all excellent.
Great list! There are still quite a few movies I haven't seen yet this year but my current top 10 is:
1. I'm Thinking of Ending Things
2. Soul
3. Never Rarely Sometimes Always
4. Sound of Metal
5. The Trial of the Chicago 7
6. First Cow
7. Palm Springs
8. Wolfwalkers
9. Ma Rainey's Black Bottom
10. Vivarium
The Vast of Night, maybe my favorite of the year.
Hey Dan. If you have access to Kanopy (through your library account), both Beanpole and The Assistant are on there for free. It also has a few more recent films like Bacurau and Miss Juneteenth. Just in case you don't have access to those somewhere else.
Anyway, I couldn't make a top ten of 2020 releases but I really loved Never Rarely Sometimes Always and the Polish film, Corpus Christi. I haven't seen either The Assistant or Beanpole yet, ha.
The trial of the Chicago 7 was such a fantastic film. Star casting. Just great. I cant wait for you to watch im thinking about ending things and hear what you think of it!
I saw so few new movies in 2020 I think Sonic the Hedgehog is in my top 10 by default
I agree with you 100 percent on promising young woman it’s my favorite movie of the year
Minari looks really nice....hope to see it soon
I love, love, Love the sound design in Sound of Metal, and I think it should absolutely win the sound awards, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Tenet got more attention for that (to be fair I thought the sound design in tenet was cool too)
Hamilton was amazeballs, I’m so glad we got to see the OG cast because now I don’t really want to see it on stage unless it’s them 👌🏽
Saw News of the World tonight. Really liked it and I think that Tom Hanks was spectacular (as usual lol)
Looking forward to watching Promising Young Woman at some point. Not sure if it'll be available to watch in theaters in my country. But will wait till it gets in streaming
You should watch (mostly) the first 2 Small Axe Films. I think you'll like them a lot (mostly Mangrove).
The documentary Time is probably my favorite so far!
Dan you absolutely MUST see Saint Frances. It slipped under the radar a bit being released right as the pandemic began but it's a really heartwarming movie that has great character work and and a phenomenal story.
I definitely do need to see it! Weird coincidence - the writer/star of that movie was my prom date!
@@DanMurrellMovies Small world! She's phenomenal in it!
Great Top 10 Dan! Promising Young Woman is probably my favorite of the bunch. You should really check out (or give us an opinion if you´ve seen them PLEASE) Pieces of a Woman, Shiva Baby, "Yes, God, Yes", Spontaneous, Hillbilly Elegy, Falling, One Night in Miami..., Shithouse, I'm Thinking of Ending Things and Another Round (Mads Mikkelsen re-teams with Thomas Vinterberg after their masterpiece "The Hunt"). Also, I'm curious about which "The Father" you want to watch because I thought you were refering to the one with Anthony Hopkins and Olivia Coleman but the poster showed other actors.
Currently my top 5 stands as:
5. Never Rarely Sometimes Always
4. Da 5 Bloods
3. Collective
2. The Assistant
1. Soul
I really hope Minari, Nomadland and PYW get international distribution sometime soon because they’ve been on a ton of lists and they all seem like the type of films I’d really dig.
They are all online to watch as they are Oscar screeners
For those wondering, Promising Young Woman will be available to rent or own on January 15th. There is no scheduled date for when it will be available free on any streaming platforms.
Promising Young Woman may be my favorite of the year. I laughed and had my heart broken so many times. Plus I think there should be an Oscar nomination for the uncredited actor who has such a gut wrenching cameo
Nomadland, for me, definitely falls into that “not for me, but glad I watched it” category. Wouldn’t be upset if Mcdormand won the Oscar again, that’s for sure!
Seen a few of those, looking forward to Promising Young Woman but still my favourite of the year is a little Netflix movie: The Half Of It. Really enjoyed it and watched a few times already.
My top 10
10.) 40 Year Old Version
9.) Sorry We Missed You
8.) Lovers Rock
7.) Sound of Metal
6.) One Night in Miami
5.) Promising Young Woman
4.) The Father
3.) Relic
2.) Bacurau
1.) Boys State
No mention of Small Axe as a whole or any of it's pieces? I loved Sound of Metal, though. I think that's my favorite movie that I've been able to catch this year.
My Top 10 2020 (by UK release dates) - Parasite, Uncut Gems, The Lighthouse, Never Rarely Sometimes Always, Bad Education, Dick Johnson Is Dead, Saint Maud, Possessor, Da 5 Bloods, Kajilionare.
Minari, Nomadland, Promising Young Woman all 2021 releases here that are very likely to be on my top 10 list at the end of the year
the Vast of Night, Possessor, The Wolf of Snow Hollow and Vampires vs The Bronx are also great movies from 2020 that i recomend
"I'll do what I want to," was the same thing I said when counting both Hamilton and American Utopia. I understand the Academy rules to a degree, but I'm not the Academy. I haven't done a final list as I'm still trying to see a few more movies, but here is my provisional list:
David Byrne's American Utopia
Trial of the Chicago 7
Bacurau (It's on Criterion Channel and I highly recommend checking it out)
Palm Springs
Hamilton
Vast of Night
Soul
The 40-Year-Old Version
Dick Johnson is Dead
Wonder Woman 1984
Great video Dan! Love your thoughts on everything. :)
Also, 2020 will end up messing up my 2021 list, as a lot of your choices are being held off, as I didn't have a way to see them. Some played/are playing at the cinema here, but I'll count that same as I would if they'd only played festivals.
Dan u rock
So far my favourite films of 2020 are Sound of Metal, Minari and Trail of the Chicago 7 .. but i still have few films to watch
30 seconds in and I've already spent five minutes looking up the Avengers Tower Lego set.
I'm not sure what my number 1 film is for 2020 but without any doubt the movie that made me miss theatres the most was definitely Soul. I don't think it was released here in theaters (and I watched it on Disney+), but after watching I just thought "we should have seen this in the cinema". If I ever get the chance to see it in a theatre, I will 100% take it.
Idk if you’re covering docs on your list but Time, Bedlam, and Rewind are three you must see. Along with Boys State and some others that are on everyone’s lists.
Quick question: Where did Dan get the vinyl on the top shelf for Da 5 Bloods?
Haven't been able to see a lot of films that I wanted to (Promising Young Woman, Minari, The Father, Nomadland, Another Round, Never Rarely Sometimes Always) but as of now my top 10 is...
1. Soul
2. Palm Springs
3. The Trial of the Chicago 7
4. Wolfwalkers
5. Onward
6. Ma Rainey's Black Bottom
7. The Invisible Man
8. Da 5 Blood
9. Bad Education
10. Sound of Metal
Here's my Top 10 for the year so far. I also have a lot of films still to watch though.
1. Nomadland
2. The Assistant
3. One Night in Miami...
4. Collective (Colectiv)
5. Soul
6. First Cow
7. WolfWalkers
8. The Trial of the Chicago 7
9. I'm Thinking of Ending Things
10. Emma
And I do have the same Worst Movie as Dan.
I miss going to theaters 😔
Vast Of The Night, Kid Detective, Broken Heart Gallery, Black Bear. Are my recommendation.
I want to watch Minari and Nomadland so bad! Did you check out the devil all the time on Netflix Dan? I’d be curious to hear your take on it
Is there anywhere to watch Nomadland right now?
I'm Thinking of Ending Things is easily my favorite of 2020. It's definitely a movie you'll need to see twice though.
I’m way behind in my 2020 movie watching. Of what I’ve seen, my favorites of 2020 are Da 5 Bloods, Undine, Tenet, Unpregnant, The Invisible Man, On the Rocks, Emma., Palm Springs, Extraction, and Greyhound.
You'll be BACK. Soon you'll see. You'll remember you belong to me.
Daladadaa daaaa da-dalaladadadaa
Don't know if it'd be available in the US but a Japanese film "The Asadas" was a very touching piece I saw in theaters last year
You should check out Another Round (Druk)
The Mads mikkelsen movie?
My favorite movie of 2020 was one you didn't mention: The Vast of Night on Amazon Prime. It's a brilliantly suspenseful sci-fi film from first time director Andrew Patterson. I highly recommend watching it, especially if you're a fan of shows like The X-Files, The Outer Limits, or The Twilight Zone.
I thought Dan said Dance Movie Night which sounds awesome
Please watch the Small Axe series on Prime. It is magnificent. More than one film there should be in awards conversations.

Hey Dan, have you already seen "Another Round" with Mads Mikelsen? It's great and in my Top 3 of the year.
Also: when will your Anime Reviews continue?
I came here for a pun about Soul. I was not disappointed.
I've been wanting to see Promising Young Woman ever since the trailer came out but I still haven't because I don't know where I can watch it
It’s on VOD now!
Does Mank make it anywhere in any category?
Check out Possesor, one of the best from last year from Brandon Cronenberg
I am not a critic so I obviously have not got access to minari, nomadland, or one night in Miami. But here is my current top 10 movies for 2020 at least.
1. Promising young woman
2. The trial of the Chicago 7
3. Soul
4. I'm thinking of ending things
5. Vivarium
6. birds of prey: the fantabulous emancipation of the one Harley Quinn
7. Possessor
8. The invisible man
9. Palm Springs
10. Hamilton
Dan: Have you had a chance to see the breathtaking Netflix documentary "MY OCTOPUSSY TEACHER"?? You going to be blown away with this movie, it's like something you've never seen, experienced, or expected as a film. It touches every corner of our existence: life/death, friendship, family, relationship, struggle in life, environment... HIGHLY RECOMMENDED TO EVERYONE!!!!
I would love to see your review about it
Ma Rainey is my favorite of the year.
My top ten cause I like sharing:
10. Bad Education.
9. Horse Girl
8. Da 5 Bloods
7. Borat Subsequent Moviefilm
6. The Gentlemen (Since wide release wasn't till 2020)
5. Soul
4. Tenet
3. Palm Springs
2. The Trial of the Chicago 7
1. The Invisible Man
There's been a lot of disappointments this year, Mank, Wonder Woman 1984, I'm Thinking of Ending Things and The Midnight Sky most notably. Still haven't been able to see Promising Young Woman (hopefully tomorrow or very soon), First Cow (I tried watching it recently but had been drinking so realized I wasn't gonna get it in that state), or Sound of Metal yet
