    I really do love this one I’m ngl. It’s Lucas at his most maximalists and it’s one of the most ambitious blockbusters with this kind of stature. They’re throwing everything out there. From how Shakespearian and romanticized everything is, to how beautiful the backdrop the fall of the Republic and the Jedi is.

    I saw it opening night and loved it as a 16 year old, because I was obsessed with Star Wars Galaxies at the time and had just unlocked jedi a few months before the release of the movie. 2005 was the height of my Star Wars Fandom thanks mostly due to SWG and Kotor. Don't get me wrong, I think all three prequels are corny, but I saw all three opening night with my late father who would die in 2007 so I have fond memories of seeing all three on school nights as a kid and sharing moments with my dad who was a big fan of Star Trek and Star Wars.

    Watching the original Cartoon Network Clone Wars (released between ep 2 and 3) really helps to understand how we get to this point. Also Grievous is a total beast in that, and the movie doesn't do him justice. He's obviously in part, designed as a toy, but if you look further at the three villains in the prequels (aside from Sidious) they all represent parts of Darth Vader: Darth Maul fell into the dark side and is consumed by it, Dooku represents the political ideals of Anakin, and Grievous is the mechanical aspect of Vader as well as the Jedi Killer aspect of his character

    I agree about Anakin and Obi Wan spending more time together. They should have began the Phantom Menace with Anakin already older and worked hard to portray him as a great, noble, likeable, and slightly flawed character so that his downfall would have been more tragic.

    While watching your review the idea popped in to my head. Imagine if Palpatine witnessed Anakin and Padme having feelings for each other and then he came to them with the proposal that he could arrange their marriage and help them keep it a secret. He would then act as their only confidant. While in the background he was plotting their destruction and perhaps even responsible for "killing" Padme knowing this would draw Anakin to the Dark Side. But like we got to see all that, sorta with the quality of a Game of Thrones style direction. I mean the early seasons of course.

    As a SW fan watching this, I have to recommend The Clone Wars if you want a better version of the prequels’ story. I know a lot of people don’t want to watch a long cartoon show, but TCW fixes all of the major story issues of the prequels. Anakin is very likable and relatable, his friendship with Obi-Wan is frequently showcased, Dooku is fleshed out more, the clones are treated as actual individual people forced to fight and die, and the machinations of Palpatine and the Senate are explored more.

    Nothing in ROTS (or the sequel trilogy) is earned. George had one final chance to develop the characters, but instead threw a bunch of goofy ideas on screen, such as: Obi Wan rides a lizard, etc.

    Appreciated that you gave a nod to Ewan McGregor, I think he did solid work. I actually think Hayden Christensen is something of a victim of George Lucas' directing style here. The dialogue is just so clunky, and Lucas was never an actor's director, and I think Christensen needed some additional support that he wasn't given. This film suffers from all of the same issues in terms of photography. There are a few aesthetic ideas that worked here, particularly the shot of Yoda and the Emperor battling it out in the senate chamber - that was a good shot. The blocking for a lot of the dramatic scenes was very pedestrian, and even a lot of the more ambitious stuff they tried to do here fell flat. Your critique of the lightsaber duel was spot on as well. I wanted something more intimate, more personal, and it actually started pretty well, but it went off the rails. Lightsaber duels are not really about the choreography, they're about the conflict between the two combatants. When they abandon the emotional component, in favor of spectacle, it just doesn't work as well.

  • @classic_colin
    @classic_colin Před 11 měsíci

    Finally, someone refreshingly acknowledges the unadulterated artlessless of the duels and visual effects sequences in Revenge of the Sith, along with the unnecessary and cartoonish moustache-twirling villainy of General Grievousness, silliness of Count Dooku, and hammy performance from Ian McDiarmid.

    I just think the one thing that the Star Wars Prequels and The Matrix sequels taught us is that in the art of fantasy film making, an abundance of CGI Effects (especially poorly executed ones) can take you out of an experience that already requires suspension of belief. From Star Wars to Indiana Jones, Labyrinth to Legend, Dark Crystal to Hellboy 2, Practical Effects will always be a crucial element to being immersed in a world, the rest is solid acting. the afformentioned series had neither.

  • @Filimaua13
    @Filimaua13 Před rokem +3

    I agree. So many amazing ideas and concepts that would have been executed better in someone else's hands.
    I just think the story for what its trying to be is waay too massive and complex to be condensed into a trilogy. This feels like Lord of the Rings type of complexity that would work in 3 hr films. It also should have started where episode II started, with a teenage Anakin at the brink of the Clone Wars. The OG trilogy had Luke as a teenager, why couldn't it be done here too? Both were aimed for kids/family audiences.
    Anakin feels like a totally different character to what he should have been to make the transition into Vader more believable. He should have been a Michael Corleone tragic figure. A man who started with good intentions as the hero that eventually became obssessed with power and control to protect the ones he loved.. ending up alone. Hayden's acting is at his best when he's just emoting through powerful facial expressions without saying any of that clunky dialogue.
    Alot of your misgivings of the prequels are fixed in the Disney Clone Wars series and other animated content. It really expands on alot and shows exactly what this prequel trilogy was capable of being. It could have been an epic awesome journey.

    The Prequel's, compared to the tripe released by Disney are masterpieces. At least there was a narrative theme through all the three, and special effects that at the time were top tier. The major problems were poor scripts, and some wooden acting (mainly down to the terrible scripts). I think these would have been better if Lucas had just produced.

    Some great visual ideas, nice work from McDiarmid, nice try from McGregor, otherwise it is incredibly ham-fisted execution, including its understanding of politics and despotism. The thing about despots is that they are good manipulators in some sense, perhaps even charismatic (Stalin was quite an uninspiring speaker, but insidiously clever). They are not super powerful evil wizards who can take anyone in a fight AND magically conceal their own evil and machinations from telepathic space knights. Palpatine is simply too good at everything. And thus, boring. Had Lucas limited him to excelling in one area and had him work around that to gain advantages, he would have done far better.

    I know most people like this the best out of the prequels, but I tend to lump this in with Attack of the Clones, because they're more similar to each other than the Phantom Menace. You still get the same sterile CGI backgrounds, the stilted acting, the forced romance, and just 0 sense of urgency from the characters.
    There are scenes like when Obi Wan is saying "You were my Brother Anakin" that everyone likes, but what I struggle with is we have been given no reason to think that these two are friends, or that they even like each other. That coupled with the Lightsaber battle that goes on too long, none of the drama in this last act with Anakin and Obi Wan feels earned. I don't feel like we've been building a friendship over the course of these movies, so I feel absolutely nothing when Anakin turns and when Obi Wan is mourning

    Your correct about the open. I was in my 30s when this came out and if you do the math I’m pretty sure you can figure out how old I was when the original came out. When it gets to the Cirque Du Soleil it improves substantially. Sith is my second favorite with Empire being first, as a 9 year old in ‘77/78 I remember Lucas explaining that Vader got disfigured in a lightsaber duel with Obi-wan next to a volcano, so I thing Lucas knew his backstory to that point which is why Sith works, as flawed as it is. Ep 1 & 2 fail because he working on the moments that didn’t really interest him he was writing to get to Sith. That being said I believe he had a really good story but he should’ve passed it to another writer. My biggest complaint with Sith is that HE SHOULD’VE NOT HANDED THIS FOR SPIELBERG TO STORY BOARD!!!!! Spielberg is too much of a populist and turned the duel into a video game, when it need to be Shakespearean.

    Hihi, the high ground thing is total nonsense from a sword fighting standpoint (pun intended), there is simply no advantage in standing above your opponent in a sword duel because it's easier to deliver a high blow than it is to blog a blow that comes from the height of your legs. And the swordfighting itself, if you acknowledge that lightsabers are very light weapons, with a few exceptions that are really nonsensical, is simply one of the best in movie history, at least if you have some swordfighting experience.
    But I really like your movie reviews, even though I tend to watch movies from a writing perspective.

    Whenever I think of the Obi-Wan and Anakin duel now I think it would've been enough to do it like Robert Eggers did the fight in the end of the Northman. Don't wanna spoil it but that was a satisfying and time-efficient fight.

      The Northman is a great movie, but I wouldn’t change a thing about the Obi-Wan/Anakin duel. I think it’s perfect the way it is.

    I still can’t believe George Lucas had anakin kill the younglings. It totally ruins his redemption arc in the OT. Sorry but doing something that evil doesn’t deserve redemption. Also he’s never he’s really shown to be that good of a guy to begin with, so we’ve got no reason to feel bad about his fall to the dark side

    The last acceptable Star Wars Episode imo. The last trilogy isn't that good. Rogue One was the last good Star Wars movie in generall.
    Edit: and yes. The Anakin story was well-developed.

    The main problem with Revenge of the Sith is how easily Palpatine comes to total power. People all just take him for his word that the Jedi are a power hungry cult, the war (with the clearly incompetent Trade Federation) is threatening them and their lives and that he holds all the answers. They should have introduced influential political characters (Tarkin for instance) who show support for Palpatine and his ruthless politics and ordinary "people" (or aliens) who voice their support for him. That would have been far easier both to believe and also to relate to because this is how tyrants and despots come to power in the first place. Donald Trump had a lot of public support and still had a fanatically loyal base of supporters who stormed the Capitol following the last election. Hitler was democratically elected into power by Germans who believed he was the man Germany needed in a difficult time.
    George Lucas had the intention to show how easily a democracy could be replaced by tyrannical rule but completely missed the scary (and important) part that the reason for this is that a disturbing amount of people actually (invadvertently/willingly/foolishly) support such rulers.
    I saw Revenge of the Sith back in 2005 and felt that although it provided a conclusion to the original trilogy everything felt really rushed and crammed together in the final act of the movie.

      I think your reading of Sith is insightful but I don’t think comparing Trump to Hitler is historically sustainable for a variety of reasons. And I’m not a Trump fan. (Although yes, Lucas seems to view populism favorably but populism is no panacea against what any person views as tyranny).
      My main issue with the Prequel Trilogy politics is that Palpatine is almost fully in control of both armies, and in fact is responsible for the creation of both armies! A true despot leverages existing forces and/or uses imagined or exaggerated enemies (say, Julius Caesar in Gaul or Jews/Bolsheviks…all the same to him…in Hitler’s case) to seize territory and power. There is nothing clever about Palpatine as written. He’s an Uberboss from the start of the trilogy and his ‘scheme’ is riddled with redundancy.

    Really, the only thing that takes ROTS down a notch is an issue I have with all three of the Star Wars prequels and that's the CGI, the terrible dialogue and some bad acting, particularly from Hayden Christiansan. However, to his credit, his acting improved in ROTS, but the dialogue remains wonky. But it is the better entry in the trilogy and has a few very memorable scenes like the battle between Mace Windu and Palpatine.

    After the terrible first two films, RotS was ok. It wasn't as some fans declare it to be the "best SW film ever." Compared to what came before in the same trilogy it was at least watchable. Nothing more.
