    Nah y'all, the barn scene with the kids as aliens was definitely scariest but the 40 people being eaten alive was definitely the most horrific.
    As to the Gordy scene ... That was the most nerve wracking for sure.

    My favorite part of Nope was how Jordan Peele captured the whole "spectacle" aspect. He talked in interviews that he wrote Nope in 2020 when he was sat at home watching all of these horrible spectacles he couldn't look away from, that he felt consumed by. He also said he became a bit scared of going outside because of the pandemic and wanted the fear of leaving the house to be ever-present in Nope.

    Jupe displaying his trauma was chilling and heartbreaking. Him trying to address it in front of everyone because that’s all he knows was so sad. The alien mask merch looking the same as the camera “eyes” on the Gordy show set really stood out to me. He carried it throughout his childhood and unpacked it the only way he knew how. But that way and his trauma ultimately devoured him because it was never addressed honestly and alone. My heart really broke for his character and that rodeo massacre. But the big balloon being the demise of the creature at the end felt like Jupe’s redemption. Him addressing his issues one-to-one and bursting. The film was incredible and every character was so real. I totally agree that while it’s not the best, it’s one of those films you want to re-watch as soon as it ends.

    In regards to Mary Jo, I think It's pointing the finger at the audience. We don't see the actual violence. We HEAR it and we see Jupe's reaction, and Gordy's aftermath but we don't see what he's actually doing. And when Mary Jo is at Jupiter's Claim in her wheelchair, the audience is "teased" with what is left of her face.
    We WANT to see Gordy destroy these people and we WANT to see the scars that were left. And it's in that wanting that we are as guilty as everyone else.

      @Drink Your Whatever Because the movie is about the spectacle. It's about our desire to see or capture horrific moments, even if it's harmful to us. But beyond the message it's also a method of film making in which you never reveal too much of the horror. Often our imaginations are far worse than what the filmmakers could do. Ask yourself this, would it have been more impactful to show Gordy attacking the crew in full, gory detail, or to leave certain things hidden and left up to your own imagination? Would people even be talking about the Gordy scene as much if it had show us every piece of the violence?

    I really like Jupe's connection to the alien. Like clearly the Gordie thing was super traumatic for him as a kid, but he was conditioned to view that trauma as something that could be commodified, and even if it scarred him, at least it was entertaining and lasted long enough for an snl sketch. So he then tries to commodify something clearly dangerous because at least if something bad happens, it'll be then entertaining.

    • @aalllllllexx
      @aalllllllexx Před rokem +3

      @Drink Your Whatever dude there is fight, flight, or freeze. He clearly looked in shock and frozen traumatized, and fist bumped because gordy initiated it and he didn't want to die. and the point of his character was he was taught to view his trauma as a source of entertainment (even when trying to present it as entertainment literally caused trauma flashbacks), which led to him doing the shit he does in the movie when he attempts to train the alien. everyone else seemed to be able to understand his character so it looks like more of a you problem than Jordan Peele.

    • @aalllllllexx
      @aalllllllexx Před rokem +5

      @Drink Your Whatever the movie literally shows a trauma response in his first scene when he has a flashback. Not to mention, objectively, watching the entire cast of your TV show get mauled to death and thinking you'll be next creates trauma, he wasn't "just frightened." And that trauma manifests in adulthood by doing stupid things like think you can tame an alien for entertainment because you were the only one that interacted with Gordie that day and lived to see the snl spoof. Sounds like you just misinterpreted the movie so why are you in my replies starting an argument in the first place.

    • @MegumiCiBear
      @MegumiCiBear Před rokem +3

      @Drink Your Whatever If you don’t like the movie that’s fine, but don’t try to act like the movie is bad or had “unrelated stories” just because you didn’t understand it. No one is “reading too much into things”. If you refuse to have a deeper level of thinking then that’s on you. These types of movies are meant to be analyzed, talked about, and rewatched because of how many layers there are to the story. If that’s not for you, then don’t watch Jordan peele movies and go watch a movie with a simple storyline and over the top action scenes every two seconds. These aren’t the type of movies you can just turn your brain off for and watch. It wants you think. Read between the lines. It’s not lazy, it’s not unorganized, and it’s not silly. It’s just not for everyone. And that’s ok too.

      I interpreted his motivation differently but I like yours. I saw that Ricky kept fixating on the standing shoe instead of Gordy. Since Ricky wasn’t “looking” at Gordy, Gordy didn’t feel threatened and initiated the fist bump. Because of this, Ricky thinks that it was his connection with Gordy that saved him when it was actually just the shoe, so this experience made him think he could also tame the alien. Apparently there was also a balloon that pops at the same time Gordy gets shot, so Ricky would’ve been killed by Gordy if the police didn’t come on time.

If anyone else made this film I have a feeling some people would applaud it more. But for some reason, we're stuck on expecting nothing but multi layers of perfection from Jordan in every single film he ever makes again. People are calling him elite and pretentious and a sell-out and bla bla bla. And my God, it's breathtaking how fickle fans can be. One minute you adore someone. The next minute you're trashing them. In my view, it's absolute proof that lots of people just project their own life dissatisfaction onto place where it doesn't belong. I have read some REALLY nasty comments about Jordan and the film. Totally spot on! While I’m sure there’s valid criticisms out there, it’s completely obvious that most of what’s being said is because Jordan is somehow supposed to live up to an image that is entirely made up of other people projecting shit onto him. He’s absolutely justified in questioning why people can’t just let him make movies. I absolutely loved NOPE & think a lot of people’s confusion about it comes from them looking too deep into it. It’s pretty straightforward overall in what it’s trying to accomplish, and I think Jordan excelled here in some ways he hasn’t in the past; although, I haven’t seen his other movies in so long I’m not confident to say this is his best. It is my favorite though and solidified Jordan Peele as MY director, ya know? He’s just always gonna make shit I’m stoked to see.

    I think the cinematographer character is fascinating. He loves the visuals of film so much (which is what makes him an incredible cinematographer) that he's willing to die, and is quite aware that he IS going to die--many artists would do the exact same thing for their magnum opus. Though we do get hints that he's dying anyway: the bottles of pills, the weakness, the intense coughing... I think the viewing of the animals killing each other foretells his own death--he's the tiger who gets suffocated by the constrictor. Does any of this make him less culpable in your "spectacle" idea? NOPE. But it does explain it. Also, I agree that GET OUT is his best and NOPE is his "weakest," though even at his worst, he's better than most.

    The theory you mention here about the shoe is my new favorite. I initially thought that it could have been indicative of some other extraterrestrial activity that would further explain Jupe’s relationship to the alien in the movie, but I think overall him being a somewhat unreliable narrator fits better, especially remembering how he recounted the SNL sketch. For me, the only moment that truly dragged was when Emerald kept cranking that damn camera at the end. Other than that, I actually liked the ending a lot, but I think it’s because at a certain point, I made the choice to stop viewing it as a horror movie and watched the last act as a sci-fi western. I was able to enjoy it more that way because I wasn’t anticipating anymore horror elements. The middle is my favorite though as a horror movie fan; I think some of those visuals are absolute gold! The moment the blood started dripping down the window is the moment this movie met my expectations and became one of my favorites of the year so far. Might end up being my ultimate fav of 2022. This movie had such a good energy to it, and I think it’s because the cast and crew really were all just out to make a movie they wanted to make for the hell of it, and I can certainly appreciate that!

    Also; I think much like "money raining from the sky" could be seen as a "bad miracle," i think that Ricky seeing the shoe standing upright in and of itself is a "bad miracle." the situation makes that miracle in particular "bad," but otherwise, people would be shocked and amazed at the sight of a shoe defying gravity. Could be a stretch, but I like the repeating message of "bad" miracles, much like how "Us" talked about coincidences and things lining up "the closer she gets."

Like obviously it was in part because she needed to memorize the safety briefing, but the fact that she later put it back on to watch was also showing that she was equally affected by his passing and probably feels disconnected from him compared to OJ.

    As a fellow pregnant person, congratulations! I want to correct a small detail (not about the movie) the real-life woman disfigured by Travis the chimp wasn't the animal's trainer/owner. She was a friend of the couple who frequently told the owner that Travis didn't like her, and unsettled her quite a lot ... with good reason. Given that the owner loved and trusted Travis, she dismissed her friend's concerns, asked her to come over to "calm" the chimp, and then there were horrible, horrible consequences. I think that this story really informs the Ricky/Jupe character, he thought his "bond" with the chimp made him some kind of animal whisperer, giving him the idea that if he could "tame" a rampaging chimp, he could do the same with the "watchers." I think the point is that no matter what kind of friendship you think you have with a wild animal, asking them to behave contrary to their nature is impossible; they're called wild animals for a reason, and we need to respect their boundaries.

I got choked up in the end watching the OJ and Em really working together. I think that’s the heart of the movie. That dad was both responsible and a showman and in the kids one is a showman and one is more responsible. The monkey scene was scary but I think we only needed the one in the middle. Like Jupe has the monologue about what happened with the snl sketch. It was a little long. And the barn scene in the beginning was really more traditional scare and a big kinda red herring but not really. Bc it lets us know that Jupe knew there were aliens out there too. He was selling them at the show.

So like, when they said “it’s in the cloud” and when the alien (i think, my memory is hazy) gets called “the viewer.” oh and when the police say on the news when talking about Jup’s farm, they don’t have the cameras so it’s impossible to say what’s going on. So many aspects of the movie had “pics or it didn’t happen” energy
