I think he nailed her to the wall so that she didn’t try and run. I assume they planned on killing her once the keys were found but since she was the one that hid them he wasn’t going to kill her until they were found
yeah i also assumed that by that point they planned on burning the place down anyway, so just needed her to be in one spot until they could do that
Right. She was the only one who knew the location of the keys so if she died he wouldn’t be able to get out of there.
that’s what I assumed too
Yeah in the book they put emphasis on the fact that they had to keep her alive until she gave up the location of the keys and after that they were gonna kill her
Duhh
The main actress was amazing! I hope to see her in bigger films.
She was good but I hated the character.
I love the actress
She used to be a top class model ... this was her first acting role.
@@suzy8109she has been in a movie called mayday (2021)
I definitely recommend the book way more than the movie. They changed a lot of things unnecessarily. You get a lot more of the villains perspective and it helps with appreciating the overall story.
Agreed. Book (as usual) is waaaay better!
i have the book in my TBR would you recommend waiting to watch the movie till i read it or can i watch the movie first and still appreciate the book
@@torrejohnson3940 I always recommend reading the book before watching any adaptation of it.
I adore the book! One of the few thrillers that I keep on my shelf. I tend to donate after reading since I already know the ending, but I have reread this one twice already.
Yes! There’s also a massive chase scene that’s at the end of the book that they cut out of the movie - the book felt more tense.
*spoilers*
In the book, he was actually attracted to her after the kiss in the bathroom, so he didn’t want to kill her. Im shocked they didn’t add that into the movie, so it made more sense when he didn’t kill her during that nail scene.
Also, the nail in the arm was a common theme in the book mentioned through out the story, so it made more sense when it happened. They removed all that talk in the movie, so viewers didn’t know that was a common punishment that Ash used.
For more context, in the book, Ash owned the nail gun and used it always. He considered a yellow card a nail in the arm and a red card was through the chin into the mouth (🤢).
I mean they couldn’t leave without the keys. Not really sure why so many are perplexed by why he didn’t kill her. He couldn’t kill her, without trapping himself, no more explanation or backstory necessary. Though the obsession with the nail gun throughout the movie didn’t really make sense, felt very random, I agree.
If I remember correctly, Darby isn't an addict in the book. She's just coming home from college.
Really? Dang I liked that about the movie
I found the movie entertaining, but I definitely liked the book better! a lot of very unnecessary details were changed, and I feel like they missed some key things (in the book, she talks to Ash a lot in the beginning before telling him about the girl, whereas it felt so unnatural that she just trusted him so quick in the movie). I would recommend the book for sure!
Couldn't agree more
I personally felt like it was understandable because she thought she knew who the kidnapper was and she had no reason to doubt that fact. So as she was panicking she spoke to the first person she saw seeking help in a time of despair and need
In the book, sandy was the school bus driver and not her maid. Also in the book Derby doesn't get nailed to the door, she gets her fingers slammed and locked into the door and then she has to rip her fingers off. Maybe they thought that would be expensive to CGI that or something. Also in the book it's Ashley that tells Derby to go outside to check for signal because he got some out there but later on, Derby questions this and thinks it was just another game to him. Also in the book J wasn't screaming for help, she was really quiet and calm and shy. Also Derby didn't escape rehab or wherever she was. She was just at college 🤷🏼♀️ it would be really good to see a film be more accurate to the book one of these days. people always trying to reinvent the wheel for no reason. LOVED the book. It played with your mind and you start to really love the villain but you also love to hate him and can't wait for him to get his comeuppance. I also got realllyyy big of mice and men vibes off the two brothers. I still haven't seen the movie yet, just the trailer but think I'll watch it tonight
in the novel, sandy believes they're going to ransom her back to her parents and i don't really see why the brothers would tell her its a sex thing. especially because i believe they're going to kill sandy no matter what.
wait, sandy's the maid? in the novel she's jay's bus driver. odd change.
Yep. If I'm remembering correctly, Sandi chose Jay to be ransomed and she was supposed to be returned unharmed. But Sandi was a prime suspect in Jay's disappearance. I think they mention an Amber Alert? So it made Sandi a liability. Plus her storage locker got broken into or something convoluted? So Ashley was just over it and went with his Plan B: Kill Sandi and sell Jay to his uncle.
Sandi thought it was ransom in the movie too
Sandy( I think is her name. I can’t really remember the characters name much. The nanny of the girl lol) during the twist where we find out she’s kinda in on it actually does say that she was never supposed to meet the people who stole the girl. At least not that soon. They were just supposed to coordinate what to do over the phone and then she’d get her money and be safe from debt. To me that made it a little better of a twist.
Absolutely loved your sincere thoughts . I personally really enjoyed the “ who’s done it” storyline , I think the acting from the lead was so good , I really appreciated the way she communicated with her body language and facial expressions to the audience and the way she used her back story to survive
Yes! I also liked that they chose an Asian woman to play the lead, and didn't make being Asian a part of her character. I liked the representation without explanation.
I found it a little bizarre that they chose an Asian actress for the movie, given Darby was not Asian in the novel.
It was predictable though
@@suzy8109 as someone who hasn't read it, did they specify? Because either way I think it's a good choice but if they didn't specify her whiteness or otherwise, it could have been an assumption.
My partner and I listened to this audiobook on a long road trip (lots of rest stops!) the week after Christmas. I honestly think that's the best way to experience this story
First movie in a while that genuinely surprised me multiple times
I really enjoyed this movie! Felt like a throwback to 2000s thrillers.
When the actor who plays the "Allstate guy" gets shot.
Me: Whelp, he was not in good hands.
Has anyone watched M. Night Shyamalan’s show Servant? It’s on season 3 on Apple TV and it’s so good. Each season gets better. The episodes are short so you can get through it pretty quick. I never hear anyone talk about this show yet everyone raves about M. Night Shyamalan.
In my opinion this movie was amazing, what a roller coaster ride of twists.
In my opinion, i found it to be way too predictable and really stupid. They all had multiple chances to overpower the other ones and both sides just didn't do it.
@@zaldigr863 This was movie to entertain you. Not a biology exam, that checking grammatic mistakes.
@@sohaibmalik6846 A movie can be bad and entertaining. This movie to me was bad and not entertaining because of the plotholes, but glad it did something for you!
I enjoyed the movie, but i'm *that person* who is going to say the book is better. A lot of the things you pointed out as issues with the plot were the things they changed for the movie, which is very interesting for me. It's difficult for me to be objective about the changes because, of course, i'm biased and would prefer if they stayed true to the source material, but I always try to appreciate why changes are made for the benefit of a film audience. For me, the changes to Darby's backstory (truly added nothing to the story), Sandy's backstory (perhaps made the explanation of their connection faster to explain?), and the lack of the explanation for the "change of plans" in the kidnapping were the hardest to get past. Personally I think if the film were 15 min longer for the sake of these 3 things being cleaner and more neatly integrated it would've been worth it.
Also, not for nothing, the nailing-to-the-wall thing was very long and drawn out scene in the book for a different reason then just "stay here" - this scene I think is more impactful to viewers who read the book because we are mentally filling in the blanks that others wouldn't have context for, and it's interesting to hear a take with no source material to draw from. All in all I think you would enjoy the book since it's a super fast read, and if you DID have it on a list of possibilities for a future book-to-film video it would be worth adding!
I LOVE the book version of No Exit it’s one of my favorite books of all times. I hope you do pick it up sometime because it was SO GOOD and I think the book was significantly better. The pacing was slower in the book and really really worked so well. It was fast paced technically but has a longer time for the info to be processed. I noticed that the movie things just happened so fast which took away from some of the suspense for me. I also didn’t really like the elements they changed for the movie but I see why they did it for a film adaptation. The ending of the book was so touching as well. I still enjoyed the movie adaptation though :)
I honestly enjoyed this movie. a whole bunch of twists that just shocked me good
pls talk about Yellowjackets the tv show it’s sooo good and has tons of horror elements!!
Fresh was actually really good, thank you for the recommendation. 🧡🥰
i loved this movie and was thoroughly entertained the entire time, but i agree about the second twist, *spoilers* but i actually lowered my rating half a star when it was revealed that sandy was in on it. it was a little too much connectivity between the characters that they didn't need to. had a lot of fun despite that though. also i thought the lead actress was killer. excited to see her in more things!
I totally get where you're coming from but it does make sense for an isolated location to be a meeting place for their criminal activity and they just weren't expecting to run into the main character there 😂 So it explains why people were there/connected in a believable way.
2 and a half stars
I literally just started laughing when one of the kidnappers accidentally shot his friend and when the main girl.. who HAS A GUN.. doesn't do anything, had me rolling. Like... why not atleast put on in his leg?.. why not take his weapon which he dropped!!... it's just... such a dumb movie. But hey.. twists sell.
@@hypeman1825 That's one of the things that was so random that they decided to change. In the book, Darby full on slaughters Lars. If I'm remembering right, she stabs him in the face and slits his throat. Such a random thing to choose to change but I guess they wanted Darby to seem more innocent?
I haven't read or watched this one yet, but I've heard that most people who have read the book didn't like the movie! I'm still excited to both read the book and watch the movie though
Thanks for the review, and I really appreciate you saying up front there were spoilers. I'm going to add No Exit to my watch list.....i agree with you regarding The Dropout, i watched the first episode, SO good.....Keep up the great work, your videos are awesome. 👏🏻👏🏻👍👍😀
I’ve been loving your book recommendations! Can’t wait 🖤
Was just catching up on your videos- perfect timing!
I am loving the new movies reviews, and excited for the upcoming book video. I just started getting back into reading again after a 7 year break lol so definitely need some suggestions
I read the description and saw the trailer for this movie a few days ago and I felt like this trope has been done so many times already- and I do like it, I just wish there was more room for originality with it. I'm happy you made a review for it, but I'm not too sure if I'm still gonna watch it, maybe if I can't find anything else lol
I didn't think I would enjoy this movie as much as I did. Some scenes left me in tears and others left me with my jaw dropped. I look forward to reading the book. I also watched Fresh and I wasn't too impressed. I feel it started off strong but the ending became a little to comedic for my liking when it comes to horror. I love watching all your reviews on shows/movies and I just find it so interesting hearing other people's opinions especially when they don't correlate with my own.
Spot on with this review! Waiting for one for HELLBENDER!! 😊
This is such a phenomenal channel.
Love these
also loving what Hulu been putting out. I loved No Exit and Fresh
I generally have pretty low expectations for books turned into movies, because almost always, the book is way better than the movie. But wow, I actually really really liked the movie! I still recommend reading the book. It was absolutely amazing.
Chekovs bag of cocaine. Introduced in the first act to play a major role in the third.
The book was amazing. I loved the character development and the overall storytelling. The movie was a good thriller movie, but does not compare to the book. The movie is entertaining but I didn't feel a strong connection to the characters and some changes seemed unnecessary
Took me till six minutes in to realize, I think that’s a Midsommar shirt. 🤣 I really enjoyed your review on this one and agreed with you 100%! I felt the final twist was just a bit much and that’s where the film lost it’s believability for me as well. And the third act was just over the top violent without necessary tension to keep me on edge. I do agree with one other commenter that the reason she was nailed to the wall was because they needed the key and she knew the location of it. From what I’ve heard they did pretty much take everything from the book and put it into the movie 🤣 Aside from the ending being different.
Need a link to this shirt!!
Me too!!!!!!
Sarah I just watched fresh because of your video! Now I gotta check this out!
YOUR SHIRT. YES.
Hard to believe that this was Havana's first acting role (she was previoisly a very successful top class model) ... her acting was stupendous. The whole cast was great in fact.
Just watched this last night and, while not a perfect movie, I wasn't expecting anything from it and ended up being pleasantly surprised!
I would love for you to read the book! They're quite similar in story but the book is more gory in some parts and the suspense is definitely more present in the book than the movie imo.
Definitely read the book, it’s better than the movie, and even more entertaining. I did like the film, but the book is chefs kiss.

I thought they were keeping Darby alive so that they could traffic her as well. I would have loved a line from Ash about taking them both. At least that would explain why they didn’t just kill her.
I was annoyed that she didn't shoot him with the gun when she had the chance
Your shirt is incredible 👀
LOVED the book 100% more than the movie. Almost every criticism you had about the movie is fixed in the book (give or take a couple). Character development, slower pace, etc. SO much better, I highly highly recommend. One of my favorite thrillers I've read :-)
I love that shirt.
(SPOILERS)
I liked the book and I also liked the movie! Although I don’t like how they revealed the perpetrator so quickly, but overall I really enjoyed it. I get it was super obvious already considering it’s only 5 people, but I was definitely entertained. I agree though, there was a bit too much going on, it could’ve definitely laid back a little. I also didn’t like the lady who ended up kind of siding with them, it felt really out of place. Overall I really loved the lighting and atmosphere.
Quick edit: I agree about the fact that it was annoying they treated her differently and were pretty much torturing her at that point when they could’ve just killed her. She was definitely very injured at the end of the movie, I was a little scared that she’d bleed out at the end 😅
yeah i understand that the woman had stakes in the situation but i see no reason why she would still be trying to work with them after she knew the truth
I thought she was going to die
I still haven’t watched the movie but I loved the book! I remember reading it in 2019 and from the moment I picked it up I couldn’t put it down one of the best choices I made from book of the month!
I agree about the pacing - I think the book did a better job of giving each element of thrill more time to play out before the next twist was thrown at you. They also left out some great parts when making the movie adaptation - it's a pretty quick read, would recommend. Regardless-Hulu, keep it up!
I absolutely loved the book. And hairpin bridge by the same author. I felt the book was written in a way to really kept me on my toes. I don’t intend to watch the film as I seriously love the book and I don’t really need the visual for this story.
I do recommend reading it, I actually think I recommended it in a comment way back when on a video regarding books you did. Maybe give it a while after watching though. But it’s definitely worth the read in my opinion
Definitely recommend the book! Wasn’t a bad adaptation, but I liked the book better!
I recommend everyone to read the book first! It's a good one.
This was good too Hulu has a bigger budget now or what cause everything they been releasing is good as hell
Oh and Sarah if you haven’t already could you do a review on the movie Deep Water that’s on Hulu as well? 💖
I went in blind and I had thought it was going to be an adaptation of Sartre No Exit especially after the Sisphyus story in the beginning. I thought she died and the cop was the valet. But once I realized it wasn't that No Exit, I still liked it.
Pleaasee read the book!! Love u sarah! Ive been watching you for yeeearrsss! Just wanna throw that out hahha
This movie was overall very entertaining but there was some scenes that did make me raise an eyebrow and be like okay why was this included lol. Like the scene with the maid and little girl felt forced and thrown in. It even made me feel like I was watching a totally different movie at times
Wait I'm so confused because there are two of this same comment but from different people...
@@charlene9489 she is the original comment. The 'x' person is one of those channels popping up who is 'verified', yet when you click the channel, they have 100k+ subs and no content. Turns out, these channels are popping up and these people bought d ad channels that already have built in 100k+ subs, which is why the accounts are verified. I personally take issue with it because they purposely go to ANY AND EVERY popular channel, across ALL kinds of channels, copying and pasting comments, JUST to get people to notice them, click on their channel hoping to gain more traffic to their channel. They're unoriginal and they're trying to gain success with ZERO of the hard work and effort that ACTUAL successful YTers put into their content. Sorry for the rant, I just see bullshit channels like the 'x' one popping up EVERYWHERE so I figured I would at least TRY to spread the word about what these people are doing.

@@charlene9489 I kept seeing comments from these generic-ass accounts EVERYWHERE, so I started digging around and sure enough, I found my answer. Are you ever gonna do a full list of horror movies on tubi? You mentioned it on the top 5 movies per streaming vid, so I may have missed it. But you said there were so many on tubi that were good... If you havent, please do it :)
Yes please make best movies on tubi. I didnt even know tubi existed until you mentioned it in the top 5 video.
Yes please! TUBI movies.
The book was better for me. I read it a couple weeks before watching.
YES PLEASE read the book :)
The book is also not the best book of all time but some of the changes they made in the movie would’ve probably been far more effective if they would’ve left it. I feel like they erased Jay’s character entirely, she has almost no lines. They also made Darby’s initial plot far more…dramatic? I don’t know if that’s the word I’m looking for but that’s how it felt.
Adding my 2 cents about this movie before watching the review. I really liked it.
It was good. I was pleasantly surprised.
Definitely read the book. It was the best book I read in 2021. The tension, surprises and brutality were much more effective in the book.
I really loved it! I totally understand its flaws, but the movie gave me exactly what I wanted. A bloody thriller!
This might sound dumb, but I was most surprised when Lars was revealed as a kidnapper. Like as soon as ash stood up I was like "yeah it's him" bc Lars seemed like such an obvious choice that I knew it would have to be someone else to subvert expectations. So then when they turned out to be working together I was just kinda like "oh okay, makes sense."
I think I'd like to read the book, but just to see how Darcy got off the wall. I can accept the drugs blocking her receptors or whatever (don't know if it works that fast), but did she just do it straight out in the book??
Sarah!!!! read the book!!!! it’s a 5 star read for me.
I really enjoyed the movie, nothing really needed to be changed about it imo. Didnt know it was a book, i may have to read it
I really liked it, I do wish they waited more to reveal who kidnapped the girl. thought the nailing to the wall was obviously to try get her to tell where the keys were and also keep her from running till they were found, also didn’t think it was weird that sandy didn’t know they were gonna traffic her, they just used sandy to make the kidnapping easier
ahh I wish you would have read the book. such a good quick read.
Idk if you seen these already but I really enjoyed green room, they look like people, and the humans
add a TBR into your book video!!!
I definitely will!!
I was hoping you would do a review on that movies. It takes place in Sacramento area, so I was curious what you thought about that
I really liked the twist of like knowing that Lars was suspicious and just thinking he was the kidnapper but then the twist was that there were two kidnappers
I went into this film with absolutely no information on it and that was the best to enjoy it! As soon as I finished, I wanted to come see your review.
I agree with a lot of what you said, except that it didn't feel predictable. Because as I was watching it, I felt like I knew exactly what was going to happen lol.
It was a solid movie and I enjoyed it.
This movie was perfect! 10/10
i think its pretty good
Definitely recommend reading the book! It was much better than the movie.
Just got done watching the movie and I kind of liked it and now I want to read and review the book.
the description of this film made me think of the hateful eight lol
i really rather liked the movie so im very excited to see what you think!! it couldve done a lot of things better but i still thought it was great
i really never respond to reviews but this one i felt compelled so
1: i personally wanted more thriller from it, but i totally get what you meant by needing more mystery as well. there was almost no build up to the actual antagonist reveal
2: it did feel a little obvious. they didnt really set things up for the second twist, and if you actually watch the trailer with subtitles on it tells who one of the antagonists is. it definitely leads the viewer in a way which i think would be good for newer fans of the genre, but people who are more versed find it a bit too easy
spoilers:
1: i thought they pinned her to keep her there, and then planned on burning the place down anyway. i cant say whether it was in character or not, because there wasnt much character development. maybe if the brother had done it, since he was scared to do any kind of real harm, it wouldve made more sense.
2: yeah completely agree with the second twist issue. great concept though
3: i do love when movies arent afraid to just get rid of a character.. it works so much better imo and it really did shock me. wouldve been much more impactful for some of the others if they had more substance.
4: yeah they didnt give much reason for darby to be there and be doing this. it never really set her up to be who she acted like. obv most people would try and help and do what they could, but she had no inner motivation. the rehab beginning didnt ever connect her to the events of the story in a way that would be significant enough for her to go through all of that
overall i agree with your review on this movie. it was wonderfully done for an inexperienced project and if the people behind it did this well so early on, im definitely interested in what they can do with more experience.
i also really would love to see more with this "Uncle Jack" (?) character that was mentioned. maybe theyll expand the universe, but i really wouldnt mind either way. just seemed like it could be interesting and there could be a lot of originality to it, considering the two guys seemed to know him personally and have a strong connection to each other + lots of potential backstory between the three
I definitely enjoyed this movie but I think the book was better!
I’d love to hear your thoughts on the book ☺️
after reading comments and reviews I really wanna read the book now
The book is a 5⭐️ fast paced thriller, I definitely preferred it. They did change some elements for sure and the ending was different in the book as well. Still enjoyed the movie but I wish you could’ve read the book first to have had the full experience with it, you may not rate it as high now that some twists have been exposed 😝
Didn't enjoy this film that much, but you made some pretty good points.
I would have liked to see more from Ed, Dennis Haysbert in terms of I wish they gave him a bigger part b/c he has actually been in a lot & is most known for those commercials for All State…but anyways, I wish his character had survived. He was my 2nd favorite besides the protragonist girl.
There's also one on Hulu called "the Feast," curious your thoughts on that one.
It was pretty cool. I have it 4 stars...
the fake snow in these kind of movies always throws me off but it was a good movie with some good twists
Love this movie 🎥
Stopped the video, watched the movie and now I’m back to enjoy the rest lol
I enjoyed this one but I wasn’t thrilled with the twist either. I’m curious to see how the book plays out.
That nail had the best perfromance it somehow went through Darbys wrists and far enough into the wall to keep her in place. How long is that nail lol
I’m not sure if I missed it in the movie but I did want more of an explanation on Sandy’s involvement. Was she the maid, was she also the nanny? She did seem like she was very knowledgeable about Jay’s illness and the medication she needed and how to administer it. However, I’m not sure if they showed us why the villains ended up in the same place as Sandy. They had the medication with them so they knew she was sick, but maybe they didn’t know how to administer it to Jay and that’s why they ended up going to Sandy…. Ok I’m speculating 🤔 but did I maybe miss this part of the movie or was it just never shown/explained explicitly?
Based from my understanding while reading the book, Sandi was an ex nurse so she’s quite knowledgeable about Addison’s disease. And as for why they met up, it wasn’t a coincidence. They planned to meet up so that Sandi can give the key to the kidnappers where they will keep Jay. She brought Ed as a “prop” so that the police won’t suspect that she was the mastermind of the whole kidnapping because the police is obviously going to suspect her. Little did she know, the kidnappers has other plans and Sandi did not know that they will not give Jay back and get the ransom, instead they were going to give her to their uncle. They just used this excuse to meet up with her so that they could kill her because it’s possible that she might snitch them out to the police if she knew they changed the plan. The movie did not explain a lot of things which is understandable since it’s difficult to fit every details from a book into a movie format. But I enjoyed it nonetheless!
disney owns hulu so any hulu original ends up there where hulu does not exist
The book is SO MUCH BETTER!!!!! You HAVE to read it, it was my favorite book that I read in 2019!
Having read the book and not seen the movie, I'll say that the fast pacing was an issue for me in the book as well. For me, it was a bit exhausting and felt like one of those anxiety dreams where you keep running. Not in a good way.
The author kept throwing deus ex machinas around like "Ope! Darby didn't see that coming and had no way to prevent this incredibly random twist from fucking her plan up." One time, sure. But this happens at least 5 times in the book.
A perfectly decent Thriller!
hii, few days ago i watched film Raw from 2016, it was pretty instresting so im curious if you coud do review on that.
It wasn't bad!
