Super Paper Mario - A Flat Game with a Deep Story | The Completionist

  • Super Paper Mario was a deviation of the Paper Mario RPG formula. When announced it was going that direction, it worried a lot of fans. Turning the game into a blended platformer with some RPG elements lead to a very creative Mario game. Navigating the 2D and 3D axis of the game is a lot of fun and has plenty of new opportunities to hide secrets. And the plot of this game actually gets a bit dark. Luigi, your own brother, gets brainwashed and because a villain known as Mr. L. Plenty more to discuss in my Super Paper Mario review!

I died a bunch of times. A lot of enemies hit really hard and really quickly, and since it's not turn-based, you often had no time to think or react, and very little mercy-invincibility. I remember the mammoth things absolutely destroying me.
but what was interesting is you could do the same to them. it was oddly freeing having the ability to slaughter enemies totally at your own speed.
I'm surprised he didn't say anything about the weiiird design of all the NPCs and original enemies in this game, how they kinda clash with the returning mario ones, how they're meant to all be from different dimensions yet they seem clearly visually unified (and one of these dimensions is EVERYONE'S afterlife, so..)

It has more or less the difficulty dependent on the player. You can easily get to level 100+ in the first level 1-1 just doing clever jumping on the rock spitting or get a few level ups just repeating efficient areas for a few minutes. If you do that the game looses any challenge there is, if you just go along it can be more difficult at times.

I'd like to point out how Super Paper Mario was truly ahead of it's time. Super was the first game to bring back this sort of self aware humor, which we haven't seen since the Mother series. Not only that but it also had a lot of this dark humor, where sometimes they pushed it too far. This is such an underrated gem that deserves more praise than it gets.

SPM had a good story, but honestly it didn't have to be a Paper Mario game throwing the series into a cycle that would create chaos... It's really not even the same game genre! But I fully understand anyone who doesn't like the game. There have been parts, especially in the mountain area, where I was asking myself why I'm choosing to put myself through the tedium of slowly and clunkily stomping through snow in a white-out, when I could be spending my time playing other games or doing sth else altogether. Then there's also the argument of why you would even have sth like the Zip-Line as an unlockable item, when it essentially allows you to skip playing the game. If that is considered a reward and progress, what does that say about the normal moment-to-moment gameplay?

Seeing Timpani and Blumiere's past unfold throughout the game, and seeing how it affects the present, as a kid was one of the most defining experiences for me. Not only for how I experience entertainment, stories, and overarching plots, but character stories as well. With me learning to love backstories and character ideals, motives, personalities, and their growth, I'm able to get extremely invested in those characters, in a good way, and in turn the story too. Those parts have become my favourite parts of stories, and I'm really grateful that I'm able to experience things in this way. But, then Mimi came.. She TERRIFIED me with the fact her head would crack as it turned around, her eyes would turn black. Spider legs would pop out of the sides of her head. And the most eerie part, was that she’d chase you and whenever she entered the same room, the screen would pan over to her which made it horrifying.
Honestly, I had my dad defeat her whenever I played and even when I’m older, she doesn’t scare me but just... unsettled me greatly.

Heh, my final playtime was also 52 hours. I didn't 100% it, though - I found most of the recipes and cards pointless, as well as the treasure maps. But the Flipside & Flopside trial pits were some of the hardest things I've ever done in a video game. The only harder things I've done are various Halo campaigns on Legendary. Even at a high level and using efficient Bowser tactics, I needed to be well stocked with high-level healing items and recipes, which took a LOT of grinding to get.
What added the most extra time to my playthrough, aside from the aforementioned grinding, was talking to all the NPCs. They're long winded, but all have GREAT dialogue (as is typical of Paper Mario!). Some also have fun side quests (including a nearly impossible to find trading quest for a bonus Pixl), and in the postgame, they all have NEW dialogue!
Alas, the dialogue and the artwork were pretty much the only things I liked about SPM. I've never been a fan of 2D platformers, but this one especially pissed me off. The two big problems were the flip mechanic (basically making you go though every room twice to find everything), and the enemy designs - they all had movement and attack patterns carefully designed to sneak in hits. Going through levels only became tolerable in the very late game when I could both smoke them with Bowser's fire AND take tons of hits because of a huge HP gauge.

Jirard, you seem to be forgetting Mario and Luigi Partners In Time. That game is JUST as dark as this one!

Partners in Time and Super Paper Mario both deserve to be a lot less underrated because they have dark yet three-dimensional stories

@@kieranstark7213 PiT IMO didn't have complicated villains (they're pretty barbaric IMO) but I agree it is also pretty underrated.
