Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door | The Completionist

  • Known as perhaps the greatest Mario RPG ever created, Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door is a game that has been often requested. I finally decided to tackle this fan favorite, but will I enjoy it more than the other Paper Mario games I have played? Could this be the game that topples Super Mario RPG as my favorite Mario RPG of all time?

      how many times did you reset to get trogdor also I loved this game I completed everything in the game as a kid, but yeah when you spent hours looking for an item it does grow tiring and like you I like fun jokes too never had a wii u though but I still dislike color splash losing it RPG roots and mostly hated losing those great followers like TROGDOR. I still wish it would have campaigns like in TYOD in future games but it seems that they have no interesting in returning to that and do plain toads plain enemies and mario. where's the toads with the wigs and outfits WHERE'S MY BELOVED TRAIN detective mission. but it a game about the journey I don't need a reward to complete I been replaying the game and enjoying as much as I did as a kid. also I never played any of other mario rpgs like mario and luigi which after watching a play though really like the game with the Elder Princess Shroob so I see why people loved those game even if I never get around to playing them.

    Anybody else trying to complete this game heres a few things worth knowing. Tattle logs for bosses or any enemy you can't rematch can be found in the professer's trashcan. The badges in the rogueport shop across from the Inn can all be purchased by talking with the toad regardless of whether or not they're on display, those ones are just on sale. Holding B at the end of a battle makes the segment where you get your star points and exit the battle noticeably quicker. Lastly, the merchant with the red and white stripes in Rogueport resets his inventory if you go two loading zones away (so go look at the train and come back for the quickest reset).

      @@Arsenicsquirrel One of the strengths of PM:TTYD is how well written the game is (regarding the characters and the script). The change works almost like the epilogue of a (good) book. The characters who had problems/concerns in the game create conclusions (Not always solutions), reflections etc. Almost every character advances in his/her life afterwards.
      I suppose the size of the bonus depends on how invested the player is into the game. If I had never played the game, I would be equally doubtful but learning how your favourite characters have changed and how they plan to advance their lives is surprisingly interesting.

The dialogue is clever and doesn't pander to children, characters LITERALLY die, the music is iconic and phenomenal, and the combat is just fine tuned enough to be difficult but not hair pulling! The reward in my view was in the gameplay. This wasn't ever meant to be played as a collectathon, nor are most rpgs I would argue. It's the time you spend with the characters, the story and overall charm that you're meant to focus on. Avatar strength and filling out the proverbial pokedex are an afterthought at most and only serve to bog you down if they don't contribute to your playstyle.

      yes, and no. have you ever ground on amazy daisys until max level? there is a BP cap, but it is significantly higher than 64's. if i am remembering right, the caps are 50 hp, 50 fp, 99 bp. (though you can use the corresponding badges to trade BP for above cap stats.) Still the way i play, though i go mainly for passives. then i learned about the danger mario strategy the first time i reached the final boss when young me struggled >:) (danger badges mixed with chet rippo meant you only need to worry about piercing damage like lightning)

    • @cullenlatham2366
      @cullenlatham2366 Před 4 lety

      @Walker Farnsworth i never said 64's caps were 99, i said they were lower than ttyd's caps. I still prefer ttyd over 64 for the larger variety of play styles the expanded badge system gives. yes, danger invalidates most of the strategy, but it also takes a lot of prep. to get the badges needed you need to grind late game badges with a secret party member.

People complain and say people like me just want another Thousand Year door. Those that say that, really don't understand. It's charm is something I have yet to see replicated in any other game I have played.

  • @Tomiply
    @Tomiply Před 5 lety +216

    The game isn't tedious at all, it's a blast. It's because you play the game in the style you do, where you have to complete everything under a certain time period. That's not fun, it's like a job, which this is for you, I get that, but it makes games that are otherwise great a bit more boring to you. It's a shame. Also, I don't see why you expect a reward for everything. You collect star pieces to get certain items, you collect shine sprites to upgrade partners and so on. That's what they're for, so I don't see why you would get a reward from collecting all of them when that's their purpose. Now that I've watched it all: Wait, you did everything in the game and only spent 35 hours? Then what are you complaining about? I remember having a save file with well over 100 hours, and I still hadn't done everything. Geez.

    • @Stringbats
      @Stringbats Před 5 lety +13

      The issue is that Jirard says the game isn't fun to complete when the fact that he does it as a job with a time limit greatly contributes to his opinion. Its not relevant for normal people who like completing games.

    • @magicthunder24
      @magicthunder24 Před 5 lety +1

      The thing is though not everyone likes spending a long amount of time doing the same thing over and over again to complete a game. He describes the tedium of doing that and also relates it to the fact that it's an RPG so that effort is a given.

    • @GearsofDutyHa1o4Dead
      @GearsofDutyHa1o4Dead Před 5 lety +8

      this. Yes he DID say the game was tedious, under the thinly-veiled pretense that he was completing it. I feel he was complaining we too much about minor things in the game like star piece locations and recipes, which are things almost nobody does completely. Yeah, whatever, he's the "Completionist" but not only "completionists" watch these videos. These videos act like reviews and tend to catch new people's eyes. If I never saw TTYD before and watched this video, I would assume it was long and tedious near the end due to Jirard's poor presentation and scripting. He can have the opinions he feels but there are parts of this video that are definitely overblown and confusing in tone. Sometimes he makes it seem like you *need* to collect all the star piece or play the side quests of which the average player literally has to do none if they so choose.

I remember eight year old me renting this game on a trip to Blockbuster with my Dad and picking it because of the colorful cover and because I knew Mario. I popped it in my gamecube immediately and I was hooked as soon as Mario hopped out at Rogueport Harbor and that AMAZING Rogueport theme music began playing. That was the first time in my young life that I was completely and totally obsessed with a video game, and that feeling only got stronger as I got farther. The art style, world locations, characters, rpg gameplay, story, and especially the killer soundtrack sucked me in and wouldn't let go. Making good art of any kind is hard. That's like saying a musician who's old albums were great but new ones suck is destroying the music that the fans love.
      They have so many good games under their belt, probably more masterpieces than any other company in the history of gaming as well. That's because they're willing to try new ideas, and in doing that they're going to make mistakes. It has nothing to do with the fans adoring the franchise, it's them trying to give people a product that doesn't just feel like a repeat of their last product. Their consoles follow the same logic.

      @@OneAndZer0 Though part of the problem is that they've been playing it really safe with the character designs - IS isn't allowed to make characters with unique designs if they're part of a pre existing species

    Okay, I don’t usually laugh at YT videos very often but when he did the call back to Trogdor, yeah I laughed.

    Personally, I didn't grow up with TTYD, but instead, I grew up with Super Paper Mario, which is the next game in the series. From the story to the creativity to the music, this game was my everything and I honestly think you'd enjoy it. Super Paper Mario really plays with the whole "paper" gimmick and the dialogue is really enveloping, funny, and endearing. Don't get me wrong TTYD is an amazing game, but it didn't get me emotionally like Super Paper Mario did so if you ever feel like playing another really good Paper Mario game, I'd recommend that. Love the video btw! Keep at it!

    lol i was just playing this game since its the greatest in the series.
    also not sure if im the only one who thinks this, but i always got a comic book vibe from the look of ttyd.

      It looks like a pop-up storybook. An artistic vibe that was lost in the newer Paper Mario game graphics "improvement"

      i can see the pop-up storybook vibe. I just always saw a comic book look cause of it being darker then most mario games plus the looks of most areas.

    i think you focus too much on completion rewards.

      Jrad Heisenkirk Some people like to 100% games because they enjoy them enough. They don't do it with some special reward in mind for doing so.

      I thought being able to do more things after you beat the game was a pretty good reward.

      exactly what HammerStix said if i complete something it's for completions sake not because there is a reward at the end.

      I don't understand why he's singling this game out for this when other rpg's give you nothing for sidequests and superbosses. defeating the lingering will in kh2 gets you nothing but bragging rights; defeating emerald and ruby weapon in ffvii gets you nothing but bragging rights, but those games get a free pass?
