  • Could Paper Mario: The Origami King be the best Paper Mario game for Completionists? In the beginning these games started out as turn based RPGs full of new characters, and fans since then have vehemently decided what they want. No matter the iteration of Paper Mario, each game is absolutely charming in its own way and continues to innovate. Although in The Origami King, the beginning is oddly dark and creepy. Let's jump into my Paper Mario Origami King review and find out what lies in store for our foldable heroes!

The "No-accessories" and "No-game-overs" are less of a completion thing, and more of a challenge thing.
I saw it as a "Hey, you liked the game? Why not try again, but this time challenge yourself!"
Once I got the 100% ending, I was content, and I don't plan on doing the other 2 challenges until I get the hankering to play the game again.

Also games like Persona 5 where its two playthroughs of a 100 hours game to get all the trophies, but like 10 playthroughs to get every single cutscene. Or the Link's Awakening chicken challenge, where the entire game takes about 15 hours, but doing the chicken minigame where you dodge chickens for 10 minutes straight takes 20 hours of attempts on its own and results in pausing every second. Or Horizon Zero Dawn which is great at all the difficulty levels the game came with, but is an absurd nightmare at its hardest DLC difficulty.
Jirard really needs some kind of cutoff criteria where if getting a single reward takes longer than the rest of the game combined, it can get an asterisk.

@@Lucarioguild7 Though to be fair, the issue with completing Origami king is not the collect-a-thon (which is in fact the BEST part about the game) but the no-gameover-gearless-run requirement. Gearless and no-gameover should never be a completion requirement, unless it's specifically baked into the difficulty setting right at the start. Especially since unless you bake it into the difficulty setting, no-gameover can easily be subverted by resetting the game, defeating the point.

With the new rule you can't modify or add new characters.
It's no excuse to not bring back the partner system as it was before nor to not bring back characters like Goombella,Bombette or even Koops.
Heck, it would be awesome to see one of the Koopa Bros. to return as a party member.
Mainly because they were already introduced, therefore it wouldn't be modifying nor creating a completely new character.

    • @SaraNightfire1
      @SaraNightfire1 Před 3 lety +20

It's complicated. It was mentioned in the comments section of Zero Punctuation where the critic (Yahtzee, who I'm a huge fan of) that the rule states that ANY characters of the Mario genre are now not allowed to be changed. Meaning you can't add a hat to an established character, or a beard.
I agree: It's a stupid rule and REALLY limits creativity. Especially when you see what they've done to Pokemon (Pikachu alone) with adding silly things.
Miyamoto, who is a genius, trust me, I compare him to a God of video gaming in the same breath. Made this decision, others will take the blame, but he has the final say on what happens with the characters of Mario. I wonder if he's just too behind the times to realize how much damage this is causing for him to change.
And yes, I know he had a hand in BoTW, but he loves innovation, and BoTW was practically innovated from the first step out of the cave. He would go with it just because it had some much innovation and "uniquenesss" to the series.

Aside from the 2 "secret" completion achievements, this game was visually stunning, musically entertaining, and absolutely charming (though sometimes challenging) to play! Some of the best parts of the game include Autumn Mountain/Shogun Studios, Bob-bomb's Sacrifice, and the groovy Disco Dance cut-scene. (Note: if you have not updated to the latest version, there's at least one extremely game-busting glitch that can completely stop your current progress, and force you to completely erase your save file and completely start the whole game over due to how severe it is! What's worse is that this glitch can occur roughly 70-75% into your overall play-through, which means that the potential amount of progress you could end up losing is absolutely soul-crushing!)

You know I feel that these changes aren’t bad in themselves, but they have moved so far from the original I feel like it makes more sense to have made it a new series entirely. There are some people who say this is their favorite Paper Mario game. I’m happy that they enjoy it. I think the problem is that comparing the old and new games are like comparing apples to oranges. The focuses are completely different. Your preference is more a matter of what type of game you prefer, not which game did it best. To be honest I could be speaking out of my butt here because I’ve never beat a Paper Mario game, but I have enough of an understanding to be able to analyze why everything has played out the way it has. I think it would have been great if they established a new series with a focus on innovation and kept this series focused on the formula that people loved so much.

What tips it over to "wrong" in my eyes is that they still could've come up with an explanation that worked (size of the explosion, certain Bob-ombs being Elites, an issue with the fuse being lost then reattatched...). Even if I didn't like the justification that much, I would've appreciated the attempt at continuity. But nope, let's just pretend this was never brought up before.

This and the fact that even Bowser minion Bob-ombs can regenerate(just not in one battle due to game mechanics) it makes the whole thing come off as cheap emotional manipulation. The "he's just a factory made Bob-omb!" is a rationalization that doesn't fit when you know the previous games had them survive explosions just fine. They even have them in a little parade at the end of Paper Mario 64 where at the end they wave at you with their little arms.

Where is this ever said? Why not just have a bunch of "organic" bob-ombs that are loyal and can keep blowing up again and again rather than mass produce them? Why even give them personalities if they *only* exist to blow up and be replaced? Bowser is egotistical, but he's not stupid. It would cost way more to mass produce than just feed and house the explosion resistant ones. "Factory made" bob-ombs make less and less sense the more you think about.

I just completed this myself two days ago! Other than refighting the bosses and perfecting that stressful game show, I really enjoyed completing it. Those two parts nearly ruined the completion experience for me, though.

Couldn’t agree more with this review and the roundup! The music is definitely worth a nod in this game though, the random metal influences were an awesome surprise every time and got me pumped!

man!! the Origami King ost Slaps harder than the Thousand Folded Arms!
& yeah I hope this Battle System gets polished for future installments, or Mayhaps a Luigi DLC (that being said I do like the time limit being a resource you also have to plan around)

I’m glad you covered this game. I don’t know if you’ll ever tackle Sticker Star for the show, but I would love to see you play more of the Mario & Luigi series. It’s sad that the dev (Alpha-Dream) went under, because I love those games.
EDIT: I also think Bowsers Inside Story (the next game you’ll get to), is probably considered the best one.

I never played the retro paper mario (wii and prior entries) AND I love the writing and humour in the recent titles. I love how it's a less intense "rpg" since I already have too many hardcore games on my hand already. I found COlour SPlash extremely satisfying to 100% with the colour hammer and am looking forward to playing this game!

Though they may finally get rid of that stupid card gimmick but the bosses In this along with some of the partners truly could've need more work and Imagination. Also R.I.P. Bobby Bob-Omb you will truly be missed!

true and the completionist is focusing on people rather than character can help with the restrictions and plus there are no rules saying they can't reuse old character where are the bone pokeys, the lakitus and their king and just for fun bring back the old characters.

@@beegbobrossyoshi1230 I did like rubber band and hole punch surprisingly. The devs and writers tried to give them personalities but overall I felt they could have done better.

Great video, and thank you for being open to the changes and trying this game out, also I admire that determination on playing the game multiple times just for those 2 hard achievements...
Speaking of achievements; with that “No accessories” challenge, hah! Jokes on y’all as I got that on my first playthrough! I never used those accessories!

I greatly enjoyed the Shy Guy Ballet section. That whole pre-boss theatrical experience was great, Birdo's ad-libbing was cute, but the ballet (Punk Remix) really stuck in my mind as the highlight.
