  • Hyrule Warriors Definitive Edition. I love The Legend of Zelda and Link and the whole world of Hyrule, but this game has the LARGEST content I've ever seen. With DLC, two ports, all on top of the original game it is a daunting task. But this is what I do. I complete games and to COMPLETE Hyrule Warriors was an insane task. This is a very special episode that has encompassed years of my life, and I don't even want to think about Age of Calamity yet.

      No, not really. The game is like 20 hours tops, the extra thousand hours needed to fully complete it are literally copy paste bs and repeating levels to the point of giving the players PTSD. You can make any game take inhuman amount of hours if you tell them "If you want to fully completely it, you gonna need to do this same map hundreds of times, with dozens of characters, and in multiple levels of difficulty", would you call that kind of sh*t "Getting your money's worth"? • @ladymercy5275
      @ladymercy5275 Před 2 lety +12

      @@Your_Native_Mothman I'd recommend it.
      One of my initial concerns that was later proved not an issue worth worrying about was that the gameplay would quickly become far too repetitive once I memorized the combos. This stemmed from not realizing what makes Dynasty Warrior games fun a as from an inexperienced point of view I couldn't really tell the levels apart; they looked like reskinned variants of same gimmick. But now having actually played through it, I realized each level does have its unique challenges, and on hard at least the difficulty is to the point that you actually need to be thinking about the lay-out strategically to be able to clear it. It's not just about smashing the closest baddies as fast you can for as long as you can. Although that's an ever present factor, and learning to chian the same AoE combos tirelessly is obviously going to be a required skill here, there's also a grander flow to each level. I see them now with the attention of detail I would attribute to (mini) dungeons, for other games in the series.
      Sometimes it's about going over each junction with a fine tooth comb to find a switch or something that you need to smack just to be able to progress to the next quest objective or whatever, but other times there's a momentum aspect involved where going out of your way to secure an extra keep or come up with a creative path to clear each map objective in a timely fashion is the difference between victory or defeat. Timing wave spawns correctly can make a difference. Hell, sometimes spawns happen, and there's just nothing you could have done anyways, except be prepared to spend the next couple of minutes fighting as hard as you can, and hope for the best. So there's a subtle to art to reading the layout of each level design that you'll subconsciously need to master the more you play through out the story mode which gives them a depth I never knew was there before.
      For a game that at first (1st) glance looked like it was all about the mindless execution of boring, buttan mashable combos for the sake of sheer spectacle, I was surprised to find that it's actually a more thoughtful, tower defense type of game, for sitting down, planning out and then attempting to actuate about 30 minute interval strategies, occasionally needing to replay or entirely change characters depending on what the chokepoint was preventing me from clearing each new twist as the difficulty of the scenarios continually ramped up. Occasionally it's a matter of throughput; be prepared to sit down for a period of time, and grind until the new character unlocked is where they should be. But just as often as not, it's changing your approach to each map that makes a huge difference, once you know what to prioritize.
      A lot of the time, there's so much going on at once that you have to know what to choose and which to ignore. Perhaps siege units are descending on your base, there's a great fairy fountain that's necessary to unlock but not at this exact moment, but it will grant you a temporary buff the sooner you get it, yet the final boss flies around on this map, it's only in this direction for a limited time, and you have to travel to these points before you can teleport there again if you don't fight it to weaken it now. So what would you do first? Figuring that out, mastering foresight and instant adaptation to varying good and bad news about the state of level with regenerating forces... that's the type of game Hyrule Warriors really is. The combat is its flashiest aspect, and if that's your only favorite part, then there's hours of to be had just enjoying each characters' increasingly absured powers on display.
      But there's also kind of an intense RTS flavored puzzle-based experience lurking below the surface, for anyone who's of a mind to engage on that level.

Raising a character's relation value is done through one time actions throughout the game and by spending enough time together in combat.

In Challenge Mode one of the challenge stages is bugged when playing as Ghirahim (a boss that needs to be killed to complete the stage just won't spawn when Ghirahim is played). So it isn't even possible to complete that stage with Ghirahim, much less A Rank it. There's always going to be something for you to do, something for you to collect, but getting all of the content is a nightmare that no one needs to go through. If you do it, it's either out of insanity, love or a combination of both and somewhere a long the way you either gain or lose one of those things.

    Congrats Jirard! I'm currently about 690 hours into this game on my road to completion, so seeing this video, I know the struggle man.
    Anyways in case it would please you to hear it, completing Age of Calamity is a waaaaaaaaaaaaay smaller task than Definitive Edition, the level cap for each character is just 100, which isn't a lot higher than the level you'll be when you beat the game. I won't spoil how many characters and movesets there are but there are considerably less than in Definitive Edition.
    Completing Age of Calamity took me around 90 hours, and I'd say it was worth it. It offers things that the original doesn't while still being somewhat similar, but even after having poured hundreds of hours into the original I can say the game was worth it.
    Overall I consider the original to be a better game, but Age of Calamity is still great in its own right in case you'd ever want to attempt it for the show or your own time. But for now, please take it easy!

    In earlier ages, games were designed to be completed. There was a limited amount of content you could squeeze into a single disk, and getting everything was often needed to unlock the golden ending or a final reward. Once that happened, though, the game was over - there was nothing left to do. If you wanted to play the game again years later, you would have to erase your save file, or you'd feel like you were doing nothing.
    But as time progressed and the ability to pack more and more content into a game expanded, the philosophy of game design itself shifted. Games were no longer something you finished - they were something to come back to, time and time again, and always be able to find something new. You would never have to "start over" - you could set new goals for yourself, and there would always be a new goal to strive for.
    Games with huge lists of ways to customize your character, cosmetic or otherwise (when you can only have a few active at once), for instance, almost always fall into this category. You're not SUPPOSED to get them all, even if you theoretically can. You're supposed to get the ones you like the most and in doing so tailor
    the experience to your own tastes. After that point they serve as new goals to keep playing for when you feel like coming back to the game, but getting them all isn't really "completing the game" in the same way that, say, getting 120 stars in Super Mario 64 or unlocking the True Endings of DKC2 or 3 are.
    In short, games like these were not MEANT to be completed. They were meant to be an insurmountable mountain, an escape from life, a whole other world that would always offer something new, and most importantly, a way to have fun. To complete a game like this is to expose its bounds, to reveal it for the fantasy that it is, and in doing so, destroy that fantasy itself.
    You are The Completionist. But the world of triple-A games no longer *wants* completionists. It may be time to re-focus on smaller titles that still use the old philosophy of completionism, or to come up with a new, more appropriate definition of "completion" for titles such as this.

      I agree. I was honestly surprised when jirard completed this, because i thought he would avoid games like these. Idk, it just seems like actual torture to sit down and do this with the thought in mind of completing it. Sure, we may do it half heartedly and occasionally attempt such a feat, but in order to do so would be to throw your life away.
      Please never do this again Jirard. It isn't wirth your time or effort. It is an incredible feat to defeat what is not meant to be deafeted, but the cost is realizing you could have done that with a game you enjoy.

      @ShockwavesFTW Před 3 lety +34

      I largely agree with you except on your last point. I'm unsure of what you mean by AAA games no longer wanting completionists.
      What standard are you using to assert that? Do you mean modern AAA multiplayer games like Apex Legends or a new Call of Duty? If so, then you're right, largely because modern multiplayer games are purposely harder and harder to "complete". Or do you mean modern AAA single player games? If so, that's where I have to disagree. Most modern singleplayer games still easily allow for completionism, even if it's only extrinsically rewarded through achievements and trophies. Take Sony and their 1st party 3rd person games, for example. In God of War, Days Gone, or Spider Man, you can easily complete the game and feel good doing so.
      Basically, what I'm trying to say is that although I agree that the hobby completionism seems to be harder and less appealing, I still think it isn't going anywhere, especially for single player games. Personally, my only wish is that games start including intrinsic rewards for fully completing the game again. If they can't do skins or extras like that, a "100%" on your save file would be more than enough for me.

      @@nuclear9929 Agreed. It seems to me that to force yourself to complete something this massive that's inherently all grind would cause you to eventually hate it...even if you completely loved it in the beginning. As he himself said, he can't even be bothered to want to play Age of Calamity (or any other DW title) simply because of the toll that completing this game took out on him. And that's a shame because, in my humble opinion, AoC is superior to this title in nearly every way.
      That sucks.

      Age of Calamity is, even the original release of this could be said is, but DE definitely isn't...even though it actually is built around not even unlocking all the characters (much less the weapons), unless you push for, perhaps not 100%, but very very high levels of completion. This game is THE fanservice game to end all fanservice games. It was designed so that it could be played over a lifetime to celebrate Zelda. It's not meant to be forced through like this, but it arguably is designed to be completed. I think Ganon designed the game himself, it's really evil in how it spaces out the content. The original let you complete each character and DLC set with their respective maps and this one spreads out everything over all maps. Insanity.
      I can't recommend full completion of AoC either (it only unlocks the Hyrule Warrior outfit for Link, so it really ends with a whimper), but getting close to completion there is a side quest path that unlocks a final, secret character, and that's really cool, but I think the path to that opens up right after beating the final chapter of the story anyways, so the side missions are...probably...largely optional. I'm not really sure cause I did them all as they unlocked anyways, lol

You just play them until you get bored of them, or until the next Warriors game than interests you is released. The content is just there to keep you occupied until you decide you are done. Similar goes for the sheer number of Warriors games that get released. Hyrule Warriors was honestly a bit of a weird case, as it was made to draw in non-Warriors fans and was released on a platform that didn't see seemingly three new Warriors games released per year, and Nintendo/Koei went far beyond the normal Koei standard for amount of content delivered.

    In most games, the main story is the main entrée, side modes and side objectives serve as your sides, and there's a nice post game to serve as your desert.
    In Hyrule Warriors, the main story is the appetizer sampler that can alone fill you up, adventure mode is the ten course meal following it, and challenges, My Fairy, and Badges are the sides that come along with each bit.

    I will admit that this has not discouraged me from my plan to eventually complete this game. It may take years but it will happen.

      I got the game a few months back and it took me 80 hours to 100% the first adventure map. I dunno if I'll 100% but getting the Master Sword and all the items/costumes for fighters and fairies is goal enough for me right now, and I'm having a blast with it.

      I'm planning to complete it too, but I need someone to explain for me how to raise the fairies, cause they are a pain in that place, a friggin PAIN, all the rest just takes time, the fairies I just don't understand their mecanics

    I have not clicked on a video so fast.
    I remember Jirard taking a train to Redmond to do a promo for this which resulted in him wearing a Tingle costume.
