    Regarding the reward for beating the Special Worlds and the Koopa turning into weird Mario things: the color change is actually changing Dinosaur Land to autumn, and it's Halloween, which is why some of the Piranha Plants are Jack-O-Lanterns. And since it's Halloween, the Koopa Troopas are dressed as the scariest thing they can think of: Mario.

      It kinda has the vibe of musical theatre, with that ever-present feeling of cheesy happiness and joy. Like it’s celebrating the simple fact of being itself, of being Mario World. Even though Mario 64 literally has Mario say “Thank you for playing my game!”, something about Mario World’s credits evokes the same feeling of thanks ten times as strong for me.

      @@DELTARYZ Yeah I agree never felt like super mario world was a downgrade in comparison to 3. In all honesty i think the advance version of 3 is equal with world. But if I had to choose world would be slightly above it in a ranking of the games.

      @lemonsalad8590 Před 3 lety +2

      I felt like it is so I’ll elaborate. Although World has a more interconnected map, there’s less going on. There are no hammer bros roaming the map and there are less levels and power ups. This is a personal thing, but I also feel like World had weird level design at times (especially in Star World). 3 has it too in World 7 but not as much. I always find some new secret in 3 but not in World. That said, World does have some strengths over 3 like the way Mario controls. It was a time where the limitations of the hardware still required developers to be clever and original to stand out, but had just enough power to drive some truly unique and breathtaking experiences that nothing else replicates to this day - aside from, debatably, the remakes of those games. The NES was a bit too limited for these kinds of experiences to really shine, and the N64/PS1 are when everything embraced the third dimension and started the whole process over again. Great video, my dude. I didn't play this one until high school, and I was honestly underwhelmed at the time (partly because I sucked at it). I played it again more recently, in my mid twenties, and I was VERY pleasantly surprised at how much more I enjoyed it this time around! Probably my favorite 2D Mario now too. :)

I remember it was also one of the first adrenaline/super rewarding moment when I was playing that game and discovering something totally unexpected (Special world) or just a secret exit that was super hard to find.

    Super Mario World is my childhood!! Everything about it just brings me back to the very first time I experienced it. I didn't have an SNES so I would play the game at my friends houses, but it wasn't until N64 was out that I actually bought myself an SNES. Like, my dad and brother were like "don't you want the newest system?" and trying to convince me that i should get the 64, but I was dead set on wanting an SNES because I wanted to play Super Mario World so bad for myself. To this day it is the only game I've ever completed, when I was a kid I had the help of my friends completing it, but it wasn't until a few years ago that I dusted off my old cart and played through it and finally got passed the Tubular level which I always had trouble on. UGHH I love this game so much.

    So personally timely! I have been in a game slump (trying to get into something old or new). Just 3 days ago I started my 30th or so play through of this game on my Switch. Great to spend an hour in bed after work and destress. I remember getting an SNES on Christmas of release year with a good friend of mine also getting the system. We were, of course, kids but calling each other with the phones on speaker (from the phone receiver base, yes they had those then) and basically talking crap to each other as we played through Super Mario World was and is a memory I cherish.

    Whenever the question of best 2d mario comes up it is inevitably a choice between this and 3. I'm perpetually on the fence, but I cannot argue with Jirard's points on SMW at all. A rare example I think of a true 10/10 game.

    • @DELTARYZ
      @DELTARYZ Před 3 lety +1

      SMB3 is still great and has its own unique charm for sure, but it always feels like “proto-Mario World” every time I play it, even with the All-Stars version. Mario World is just the bigger, badder, better version of the groundwork laid by Mario 3.

    • @TheRealMichelozzo
      @TheRealMichelozzo Před 3 lety

      @@DELTARYZ As a good later entry in a franchise should be TBH. But those unique charms as you put it for SMB3 do keep me waving between which one is the best one.

    This is the first video game I ever played, I got it on Christmas Day 1994. Every year since then (with two exceptions when I was in basic training and on a deployment, respectively) I have played SMW on Christmas. Sometimes I go through the entire game and do as much as I can, sometimes it's a speedrun, sometimes I just play for like 5 minutes before going back to spend time with my family, but the first few levels of SMW are more of a Christmas tradition in my house than turkey dinner :)

    First snes game I played as a 5 year old in 1994. Still pick up and play it every couple of years. In my eyes, nothing beats this game. Nostalgia value or not, it's still just so good in every department.

  • @jtflightlesswallow2930

    This was the very first video game I ever played. It was 1995, I was about a month from turning 4 years old. My mother had just bought a Super Nintendo for the household and let me try the game it came packaged with. We played the hell out of this game, and every year close to my birthday I complete it again. I actually just did that a couple weeks ago, it took one afternoon. This game to me represents everything good about my childhood, and it cemented my love of games for the rest of my life.

  • @apollolux

    I've completed SMW a couple of times myself, and most recently doing it on the SNES Classic Mini reminded me how the two most annoying parts of completing the game will always be the Forest of Illusion (specifically the only space in the game with THREE exits, its Ghost House, and how being at 95/96 kept stumping me even though the map "looked completed") and Choco Island with the stage whose screens are determined by time and coin count and an exit that loops back to itself.
