Super Mario Bros 3 is universally recognized as one of the best Mario games, and revolutionized platformers. Sure, Nintendo could have made another Super Mario game exactly like the old ones and it would have made tons of money. But with Miyamoto at the helm, we had the most influential Mario game of all time. In Super Mario Bros 3 new mechanics were introduced, new characters like the Koopa Kids, amazing graphics, and most recognizable: an overworld! A world map that allowed you to select levels, and more importantly, find secret paths. What surprised me the most is the level of character design in Super Mario 3. The Bullet Bills and other enemies were finalized, and much of their models are the same in Super Mario Odyssey. There's so much to show and this is a game that has shaped me and my love for video games. So, straight from the Super Mario All Stars pack, I give to you my Super Mario 3 review!

the playing cards on the over world are a throwback to the sets of playing cards that Nintendo made before they got into video games. Pre video games Nintendo made all kinds of random house hold stuff. Nintendo pays respect to where they started in most of there games.

The tanooki statue lets you destroy things that can only be destroyed with a hammer or star, like thwomps, plus the flames on the airships when you drop on them.
It's also the only way to destroy roto-discs!

I remember turning on the first game that I ever owned and being absolutely captivated by a surrealist masterpiece that. It was like taking the weirdest, most memorable, and entertaining dream you ever had and turning it into a video game.

Hanafuda cards, that have nothing to do with the western playing cards that have 4 suites. Hanafuda cards look completely different
11:06 Using the Tanoki Suit you can kill nearly every enemy in the game by turning into a statue and dropping on them. Even the rota dishes. Also you could combine it with the P wing powerup. Loved that thing.

Came here to say the same thing. The original had the backgrounds which showed that the game was a play being acted out. Then All Stars threw them away and revamped them with generic Mario backgrounds.

Same. I personally enjoyed the simplicity and design of both Mario 2 and Mario 3. I preferred the 8 bit sound over the 16 bit, too. Can’t necessarily say the same for Mario 1, though.

This game gets a lot of unneeded hate that I don’t think it deserves because it was a sequel to 64. People call it shit because it has to live up to one of the most beloved Mario games of all time.

A note about completing the story of SMB3, at least on the NES (not sure about the All Stars Version), but once you complete the story, as long as you don't turn off the console and start a new game after the credits roll, you will begin the game with your entire inventory filled with P Wings. Not sure if this happens on every SMB3 NES cart, even. But it def happens on the NES cart I own. Something to explore if you ever want to seek out and do the NES version.
Whoever was too lazy to remove the S in "Producers" and just add Jirard's name twice deserves a raise.

It was also my favorite before Odyssey dethrone it for me. But from a completionist point of view I could see why he wouldn't like it. Sunshine has some of the most frustrating levels in all of Mario's history and about 20% of the Shines are just about collecting coins.
Winter Song i love odyssey and all but I just like sunshine for how different it was flood was a ton of fun to use and the overall theme of a tropical vacation was utterly endearing to me lol

The e-Reader was an odd thing. I believe it wasn't even released in Europe. So when I ordered the SMB3 GBA version from a US shop, and some weird cards came with it, I was puzzled.

For the record using the tanooki statue ability in the air over normally unkillable enemies like thwomps is the point of the tanooki power-up...

Tanooki Mario is best Mario. Thwomps fall before his stony might.
Combining it with a P wing powerup was the best.

Thanks. I'm 55, and I've been playing Super Mario games since they came out. I used to play all the great old games in the arcades. I've still got an NES, a SNES, a color Gameboy, a Gameboy Advance SP, a DS Lite, and a 3DS. I've got at least one Super Mario game on each platform. SM3 is definitely a perfect video game. It upped everything about Super Mario, and cemented him as an icon forever. Nothing compares to Nintendo for me, and nothing compares to Super Mario, either. Whenever I play one, I always go through it completely, never skipping anything. I never use warps. I want to enjoy all of it! Thanks again. tavi.

It is, but technically speaking, it has not aged super well, and since it needs to compete with some of the best videogame ever made, it's safe to say that putting it over smb3 or mario galaxy 2 is... well, more a matter of nostalgia then a proper honest opinion.
I mean... the fact that a game so sweet as mario sunshine is not in the top 3 list of the best mario games speak more about the level of the mario franchise in the videogame history then about sunshine being less then amazing.

There might be others I’ve missed but saying the koopalings are underused is like saying Mario doesn’t appear in a Mario game.
Which are all non mainline games. They are pretty much used mostly in the rpg games now. I think he meant being used in mainline titles.
Mario kart 8,a lot of the new super mario bros games,mario world mario 3 are all technically still mainline only 2 of the ones I mentioned are rpgs. They HAVE been used a lot was my point and it's actually something people were sick of as a result.
Regardless of them being spin offs or not they're still used a lot.

This is going to sound weird, but your voice is so good. Like it’s relaxing and is enjoyable to listen to.
The Tanooki Suit allows you not only the float/fly abilities of Raccoon Mario, but also the ability to become invulnerable for several seconds. If you turn into a statue and fall on a foe, you can destroy many enemies that harm Mario when he jumps on them, including Spinys, Piranha Plants, and Roto Discs. The Tanooki Suit is my second favorite power up in the game, behind the Hammer Suit (but even hammers cannot harm Roto-Disc's).
The Completionist: Super Mario Bros 3 is a masterpiece.

Oh man, sonic 3 and knux? That's the first game I completed 100 percent. Even got the hidden final stage, doomsday. It was all great until I powered up my childhood cart and found out the battery failed and all my progress was wiped clean. Man, I hate how game packs had battery operated saves.
I don't know exactly how long it will be before it comes out, but Jirard said on Twitch stream that DKC 3 is coming soon. I don't know if he meant to Super Beard Bros or to Completionist, but ultimately it will come to the Completionist anyway. So here's hoping it comes out in the next few weeks.

at world 8 mini-fortress P-wing is useless, there is no room to fly. And my problem was that I didn´t know what I was supposed to do.

I'm glad that you've revisited the All-Stars collection, but my REAL question is: Will you complete the E-Reader levels that were released on the Game Boy Advance version of this game (Mario Advance 4)? All levels are on the Wii U/NSO Expansion pack. 😁

The two most nerve wrecking stages in SMB 3 to me are both flying cloud stages,that diagonal flying stage and the fucking Parabeetle stages,those two cause me the most stress of all...including the final stage!

Has Jirard ever completed Mario World for GBA? I always wondered what happens when you get all the coins in world 2-1. You know, the secret coin place inside the pipe toward the middle of the level. It has a switch that you activate and it begins counting the coins. Not sure if anyone knows what I'm talking about.

that pinball machine is in a arcade museum that is open to the public a few hours from me, and you can play a lot of old arcade games... i got to play that mario machine and its so much fun! better when its plugged in and working, should of had it on!
Sunshine is a great game. But I don't get angry at people who disagree. Different things appeal to different people, so "X is the best" will forever be subjective. Personally, Sunshine is in my top 3 of Mario platformers. And SMB3... hmm, it's alright. I didn't grow up with it so 3D Mario just appeals to me so much more. And I absolutely hate these slow autoscrolling levels. They are just annoying and not fun to me. So I basically dislike all these army-style levels like airships and tanks.

The point of the statue is to be able to avoid being hit, or to fall on top of enemies and do a super hit, similar to the ground pound or spin jump.
