I don't want to start an "our generation vs your generation" debate here but I'm so glad I grew up watching this football. In the pre-internet days it was such a joy to hear the exotic sounding names and see the outlandish combinations of colours on kits from the likes of Columbia, Cameroon, Costa Rica, Brazil etc . I was 10 at the time and had begun my football fandom 4 years prior watching the Villa get relegated, then promoted, then nearly relegated and then finishing 2nd to the last ever Liverpool side to win a league. David Platt was my ultimate hero and the pride I felt when he scored that gorgeous volley against Belgium was too much at the time and I was reduced to tears. Regardless of how I or anyone else feels about what's happened to the game since I honestly hope it means as much to kids now as it did to me and my friends back then.
Bobby Turkalino This was the World Cup that got me into loving football, my joy was found further when I bought a completed 1990 World Cup sticker book last year
Not just that you discovered players it was like the rebirth of football for me as a fan. The early 90s late 80s i remember the build up where i was for the big games sneaking out for fish and chips and watching 2nd halfs of games in the chippie with about 20 people cheering and singing. The england games the balmy nights the birth of Gazza, the fever that swept the nation. I'm misty eyed thinking about it. The old analouge tv and the games of football down the park sometimes 3 games going on at time. Best ever. Peace and love to you all.
I wasn't around in 1990 but watching this world cup review was amazing. This is why the world cup is the greatest sporting event on the planet and nothing comes close to it
I was only 8 years old during this tournament, MASSIVE part of my life, have been obsessed with this tournament ever since, life has never quite been the same since!!
What strikes me watching this back is how many of the countries that took part at Italia 90 no longer exist. Soviet Union fell apart, Czechosolvakia peacefully became the Czech Republic and Slovakia, Yugoslavia was ripped apart by a bloody civil war within two years of this and of course, West Germany reunified with the East to become simply Germany.
Thanks for the upload, I wore my VHS tape out over 25 years ago, brings back so many memories. Cameroon booting Caniggia about will always make me smile.
Thank you so much for uploading this. I had recorded it at the time and overwrote it with Diff'rent Strokes episodes about 2 years later and was devastated. I'd also only got home in time to record from the England Egypt game onwards.
It shouldn’t be. I watched it at the time and most of the match were boring. It was because of this World Cup that several rules were changed to improve things.
Love that penalty, have watched it many times!!......what makes it better is the fact that he missed one against Yugoslavia in the 1/4 final. He went the same way again against Italy, outwitted Zenga 👌
I can remember watching most of this World Cup with my Dad who we lost last year. Remember he used to collect the World Cup Esso Coin collection for me, I still have it. Funnily enough, I got the Czechoslovakia Coin from eBay only last month. That was the only coin I didn't get during the original promotion 30 years ago. 30 years ago? Wow
A great tournament, but a great shame about the Final, especially the way Argentina behaved. I can still remember the look on the FIFA officials, when they were handing their runners up medals. They weren't pleased with them.
Couldn't agree with more. I was only nineteen years and football back then was football. I remember watching this World Cup it was a great one and you could feel the game watching it.
driller007 I'd also recorded this but didn't arrive home in time so missed the beginning. Plus I taped over it later with episodes of the Diff'rent Strokes :( First time I've had access to this in 23 years
3:45 - when an Italian starts bitching about losing to South Korea in 2002 show them that. The lad is metres inside. He’s not even in shot when the other Czech player heads it.
bascet1 BTW Italia 90 was one of the main events that helped English football come out of the dark ages although overall it was one of the worst World Cups on record, Mexico 86 was better.
+Jack Melia Holland scored first, Kieft- then Egypt got a penalty- Abdel-Ghani for 1-1. The group was completely deadlocked with identical results, until the final round of matches
Totally agree with other comments it was the last World Cup before sky TV and face painted idiots ripped the soul out of football. The disappearance of the terraces didn't help either. The England v west Germany game should have been the final. Such a shame
Schlomo Shekelsteeler what the Italy that before they put schillachi on were absolutely dreadful and couldn’t beat a very ordinary Argentina team. I’m deluded though!!
ShaiyaStudios The 1982 England squad was better than this one, players like Keegan, Robson, Shilton, Hoddle and many others but this World Cup is our most memorable from an English point of view since 1966.
What's interesting to note is that due to the English clubs being banned in Europe, a lot of the English players played outside England .. the result was a far better English national team .. Food for thought for the current English national team .. maybe this is what's required now
Although, at the time, Chris Waddle was the only one playing abroad (unless you count the four who played in Scotland for Rangers). Lineker had been at Barcelona but was back in England, and both Platt and Gascoigne would move abroad in the year following the tournament (which would produce a dire 1992 European Cup showing and a failure to qualify for the 1994 World Cup).
Argentina never should have made it to the final... They are such dirty players.. They disgraced themselves... Worst Final I’ve ever seen! It should have been Italy Vs England for the Final... for both sides to have gone out on penalties it was just cruel..

The most "dreadful" aspect of the final game was the blatantly biased and unprofessional commentary by the ITV crew particularly Ron Atkinson. His misguided narrative was a discredit to the game and to English objectivity.

Im 17 and dont worry mate most of us are football crazy as u were hope we always will be

Normally I berate ITV but this is one of the greatest pieces of television ever filmed. My brother and I watched this many times when we were boys.
The VHS of this programme scored my childhood - can still recite every word of Jim Rosenthal's narration!
Ryan McGuinness and I thought I was the only one!
Ryan McGuinness me to! lol its as if this world cup is just an important part of my life
Ryan McGuinness
I did exactly the same thing. Watched until the video was unwatchable. Re watching it now I can still remember most of the commentary.
I was only 8 years old during this tournament, MASSIVE part of my life, have been obsessed with this tournament ever since, life has never quite been the same since!!
Did the same watched it on repeat - most Saturday mornings. 11 at the time and on holiday during the final. Brilliant time of my youth.
I was 9 when Italia 90 started, I can vaguest remember Mexico 86, but this was the first World Cup I fully remember and what a World Cup it was.
The current heatwave in Britain is bringing back memories of Italia 90 when we had one of the best Summers ever.
Was the best summer ever up until Waddle's penalty :)

Take me back to Italia 90. I was 11 and remember everything about the tournament.
ITV was blessed to have Jim Rosental, Brian Moore and Saint and Greavsie back then.
Thank you so much for uploading this. I had recorded it at the time and overwrote it with Diff'rent Strokes episodes about 2 years later and was devastated. I'd also only got home in time to record from the England Egypt game onwards.
my 1st world cup. so much memories. thanks for the upload
I had this and the BBC one on an old vhs. Thank you sir
wonderful wonderful WONDERFUL MEMORIES ,,
Absolutely. My favourite World Cup.
I was 8 nearly 9. Nothing like your first World Cup.
lee chipper hahaha....u can say that again same here was 8yrs old indeed never like the first world cup,now there is no thrill
It shouldn’t be. I watched it at the time and most of the match were boring. It was because of this World Cup that several rules were changed to improve things.
Nothing will beat Careca scoring against Sweden for me. That microphone crackle….goosebumps
one of the last instances of that beautiful phenomena from yesteryear
That Maradona penalty in the Semi Finals is one of the greatest penalties I have ever seen. A genius roll in.
ShaiyaStudios He’s a Cheat! Handballing his way through yet again!!
Love that penalty, have watched it many times!!......what makes it better is the fact that he missed one against Yugoslavia in the 1/4 final. He went the same way again against Italy, outwitted Zenga 👌

Yeah, 30 years. [Sighs] It went quick didn't it?
Italia '90...not the greatest football ever but fantastic drama. Happy childhood memories.
great documentary
BBC had a great documentary on youtube....Italia 90, they took it down due to copy-write, it's 2019?
Klinsmen's dive in the Final should have seen him sent off , that was an outrageous dive
Yugoslavia goal of the tournament Dragan Stojkovic a Legend
Melanie F matthaus 2nd goal vs Yugoslavia was the best
Schillaci v Uruguay
the argies' very ordinary side having to rely on only 3 men to reach the final is also what made this the most memorable world cup
Thanks for uploading.
A great tournament, but a great shame about the Final, especially the way Argentina behaved. I can still remember the look on the FIFA officials, when they were handing their runners up medals. They weren't pleased with them.
Cameroon were the Wimbledon of international football. You couldve seen most of those goals at Plough lane.
Holland v Egypt (1-1) 10:30 - NOT goalless!
Couldn't agree with more. I was only nineteen years and football back then was football. I remember watching this World Cup it was a great one and you could feel the game watching it.
3:45... there are FOUR defenders playing him onside. Scandalous!
I think this was shown on ITV on Sunday 30th December 1990.
Best World Cup ever!
Dragan stojkovic wonderful player
I had this recorded on vhs but it cut off during the England semi. First time I saw it all so thanks
driller007 I'd also recorded this but didn't arrive home in time so missed the beginning. Plus I taped over it later with episodes of the Diff'rent Strokes :( First time I've had access to this in 23 years
Haha brilliant
Italy 90 was a great cup for England. I would prefer have faced England instead Germany in the final match.
16:33 what was the name of this tune playing when Brazil lost to Argentina
whats the name of that music when Italy lose on pens to Argentina
What’s the music when Brazil go out??
Without a doubt a very good world cup and brings good memories back
the most memorable world cup ever . england reaching the semis..
German penalty in the final best ever memories
soccer finals can be a bit anti climatic anyway not just this one, but was a great tourney!
soccer? u mean football i supose
Italy's first goal against England was offside. . . . although it likely should have been a penalty anyway.
When England weren't utter shite
Costta Rica....Oh the joy... The pure Joy of watching Scotland lose....Time after Time again.
Man ITV just always sits in the BBC's shadow don't they?
3:45 - when an Italian starts bitching about losing to South Korea in 2002 show them that. The lad is metres inside. He’s not even in shot when the other Czech player heads it.
Can anyone tell me the name of the song of the beginning...
The last great World Cup before the gentrification of our brilliant sport.
bascet1 mexico86 was the last great world cup
Bachittar Lehal your right mexico was the best but this was good too even if the football wasnt the best
bascet1 BTW Italia 90 was one of the main events that helped English football come out of the dark ages although overall it was one of the worst World Cups on record, Mexico 86 was better.
Agreed!!
shut ur ass! was first great world cup of professional era
can somone remind me what is the song that plays during the brazil-argentina segment
Elegia, by new order
Nice
Had this on VHS and the BBC version- which was better. And Holland v Egypt was 1-1, not goalless. Silly ITV...
Nah I'm pretty sure it was 0-0 England v Ireland was 1-1
+Jack Melia Holland scored first, Kieft- then Egypt got a penalty- Abdel-Ghani for 1-1. The group was completely deadlocked with identical results, until the final round of matches
+Abbas Zaidi my mistake mistook it for another game.
+Jack Melia no worries, group F was pretty forgettable except for England v Holland

Mike Dean must've been a big fan of this guy growing up 30:08
That guy (Codesal from Mexico) reffed the final. He was a clown.
ITV got away with a major rickett here, saying Holland Vs Egypt ended goalless at 10:42 - it was definitely 1-1.
What is the music played after England lose on penalties?
Elegia by New Order
best world cup for England we've been shit ever since
+PANINI FOOTBALL GFC1893 Sod off. This was the best England team since 1966.
ShaiyaStudios The 1982 England squad was better than this one, players like Keegan, Robson, Shilton, Hoddle and many others but this World Cup is our most memorable from an English point of view since 1966.
Until now!
Best world cup, I was a 7 grader in high school, still seems like yesterday.
What's interesting to note is that due to the English clubs being banned in Europe, a lot of the English players played outside England .. the result was a far better English national team .. Food for thought for the current English national team .. maybe this is what's required now

Waddle was the only player abroad. What pile of dung you have just waffled
Intro👍
Holland vs Eygpt was 1 each.
west Germany the best team
Argentina never should have made it to the final... They are such dirty players.. They disgraced themselves... Worst Final I’ve ever seen! It should have been Italy Vs England for the Final... for both sides to have gone out on penalties it was just cruel..
Hazel Walsh bollocks Germany deserved to go through in the semi final
Wrong, Argentina suffered too many injuries and missed like 5 players in the final. Maradona was injurd the whole WC. If you actually watch the game against Italy then you will realize that Argentina took over the game in the 2nd half and Maradona was the best player that day.
01:46 another "Hand of God"...
41:00
that Costa Rican goalkeeper needs to learn how to dive to make more saves.
Netherlands vs. Egypt ends goalless according to the narrative
WRONG! iT ENDENDEND 1-1
Nobody checks before editing???
So young paul gascoinge
At 41:00, a beautiful young woman catches the cameraman's eye. She is gorgeous.
Firstly, who is she and does she still look as gorgeous??
I bet your talking about the Brazilian girl- crying then smiling at the camera. I was 15 yrs old during 1990 WC - and me and my school mates all noticed her!!
She's proberbly a fat women now with loads of kids and a moustache
Gary I’ve wondered the same for the last 30 yrs since I first clapped eyes on her watching this programme live.
They showed that woman several times during the Brazil - Argentina game! Camera man clearly had the hots for her. I do wonder what she looks like now.
Thata my mama
Stuart Pearce disliked the video
rudi voller lothar matthaus franz anton becknbauer
The most "dreadful" aspect of the final game was the blatantly biased and unprofessional commentary by the ITV crew particularly Ron Atkinson. His misguided narrative was a discredit to the game and to English objectivity.
Was he also biased towards particularly Germany in the final?
Italia 90 was not as good as should have been
Netherlands drew 1-1 with Egypt 🤔🤔
