This is football gold! So glad to see the preparations before my very first world cup experience as an 8 year old. Totally fell in love with Zico and the Brazilian team as did almost everyone else who witnessed the tournament.
Best world cup along with 94..
@@NOTODIVERSITY123 I agree mate! France 98 was good too but France were always going to win it. I just knew it.
Well I am from Brazil and witnessed this world cup as a trauma for our entire country because our team wS really quite superior to the other ones ! But i think our players did not have the mental power to overcome Italy and the final victory of Enzo Bearzot players was fair and deserved
@@antoniosassogarciafilho1476 I understand but I think they had the mental power. It was just bad defending that let them down during the Italy game but hey were far better than anyone else in that world cup and should have won it.
@@NOTODIVERSITY1232022 was even better tbh
The 80s world Cups were amongst the greatest world cups of all time.
The '82 and '86 World Cups had the likes of Maradona, Platini, Socrates and Zico - no wonder they were great tournaments.
82,94, 2014 great world cups
@@martydav9475 Yep, absolute legends. The World Cup was so much bigger than anything else back then. The build up seemed to go on for ages.
The greatest World Cup for me, with the greatest Brazilian team I ever saw, it's an absolute tragedy they didn't win. Every game of the 2nd round Brazil, Italy & Argentina group was a classic. And the West Germany-France semi-final is the stuff of legend.
Agreed, those Italy/Brazil/Argentina matches were worthy of World Cup finals themselves. What a pity we didn't get Brazil v France in the final - that would have been spectacular with that Brazil team and France with that famous and brilliant midfield of Platini, Tigana, Giresse and Fernandez.
Loved this world cup, my first. Magical, Brazil were just breathtaking, Italy, France and England were also great. Loved it all
@@martydav9475 They didn't make it to the final for a reason.
@@martydav9475 Italy v Argentina was an awful match.
Brazil weren't really a team, only a brilliant midfield. A non-existent attack and a very suspect defence.
Jack Charlton “I can’t see a pillar that would obstruct peoples view” cut to shot of a pillar😂
I have to say that Admiral English kit of the early 1980’s was the best looking English national team kit, ever.
Hated flappy collars that began in the mid 70s. Liverpool never wore collars. Class.
My favourite ever England kit was the 1986 World Cup one. The Umbro kit. Plain white shirt and socks and plain dark blue shorts. The away kit was even better. Plain red shirt and socks and Plain white shorts. Along with the light blue 3rd kit, sort of. We didn't really have an official 3rd kit, but we had the light blue shorts and socks against Argentina in 1986.
@@mrkipling2201absolutely no doubts about that one. Elegance and subtle.
The big shoulder bar Admiral kit was lovely but the wrong colour blue shorts (royal blue).
The navy blue was a good decision and not as garish
@@andrewphippsphillips1455 definitely. I know that the Admiral kit it a lot of people's favourite but I never really liked it myself.
@@seltaeb9691but a lot of your away shirts were ugly like the white and green from around the nineties with crown paints sponsors...ewe...and you lot started the shell suit wearing on the terraces...lol
The best WC ever !!! The reason why I fell in love with football at the age of 11. The WC, when the expression "joga bonita" was created. The WC that started the decade (the 80s) of technical football. The decade when the players still played for fun and for the beauty of the game.
The Brazilian team was magic Zico ,Socrates ,Falcao, Eder, Junior, Oscar, I was gutted when they lost to Italy ,that game was probably the best of the tournament
Probably the best team to never win the World Cup.
@@mrkipling2201Along with Hungary in '54 and the brilliant Dutch in '74. Brazil were wonderful to watch but they should have played out time once they equalised against Italy but instead they kept going forward and left themselves exposed. Glorious to watch but almost too 'pure' for their own good
Jock didnt have Jinky in 82..... imagine the Brazilians fighting over his jersey at full time......?
@@duneideannaer5990 If Jinky was English he would have been on the 1966 WC team and would have got far more recognition Jimmy Johnstone was one of the best dribblers the game had. In the 1970 EC game with Leeds even Bite your legs Norman Hunter couldn't stop him.
@@mrkipling2201 Without a doubt they were, even over 40 years later that game still trills me
So many people no longer with us now. Brian Moore, Brian Clough, Jack Charlton, John Bond, Paul Mariner, Jimmy Greaves, Ian St John. Martin Tyler still banging away however.

An awesome and powerful World Cup,the likes we will never be seen again. Brazil brought magic to the games. Amen
....as italian, great memories and what incredible win, one of the best World Cup edition...
Tardelli's ecstacy in the final. Even after 41 years, still remember it. Tigana's tears, Socrates & Eder's thunderbolts & Algeria beating West Germany. Fabulous.

Those opening titles take me right back! And theme music by none other than Jeff Wayne.
There is someting about all the old music from these programmes!!
The Big Match theme music, Jubilation by Jeff Wayne, is the best they ever made.

We need all the previews in the playlist hahahaa I am loving this
Ah the sun, the sangria, the magic of Brazil great footy memories from my first world cup as an 11 year old 😊
Back in the day, when the "smaller" countries were patronized. And then Algeria smacked West Germany & Cameroon held Italy. But, Brazil❤! What a side. Great memories.

@@gabrielesantucci6189England got through to the 2nd group stages and it was only because of their 0-0 draw with Spain that they were eliminated. So don't know what you're talking about.
The first World Cup I remember.
It was incredible how the tournament turned out from the point of view as to who won it - if anyone said italy would have won it after the 1st round stage they would have been laughed at - they were dreadful and Rossi looked completely out of touch but by the end you would have to say they thoroughly deserved it - they beat the 3 best teams they could have had to play so they did it the hard way - I think the turning point was the game against Argentina and Gentile being allowed to stop Maradona - you wouldn't get away with that now in terms of how he did it
he butchered maradona, and it riles me that Italy do it the unpretty way every single time they win a tournament.
@@meisterlymanu5214 At that world cup the only one who butchered somebody was the German Keeper Schumacher against France Player Battiston!
@@EVOZORE 👍
@@EVOZOREPerfect!!!!!👍
I can remember during the 0-0 draw between Italy and Poland Ian St John saying "One thing's for sure, Brian - neither of these two teams are going to win the World Cup." Ironic that Italy won it with Poland finishing third.

Classic Matches,
Thanks indeed for providing this excellent preview programme for World Cup 1982. So well presented and great panellists and expert rundowns on the competing countries-total contrast to modern-day sports coverage. Captures perfectly the sense of anticipation felt before every World Cup!
amazing footage ,i rember watching these clips of the young Diego maradona goals against the soul music of Kool and the gang as an 11 year old

Aah, the good old days- when steak & chips was the pre-match meal & beer was drunk to rehydrate.
Amazing to think 4 of the countries that qualified no longer exist (Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia, West Germany & Soviet Union)
And barring germany,it's made the tournaments weaker because of it.
Countries like yugoslavia,Soviets and Czech were formidable on their day.

A brilliant Brazil team and a ruthless Italian team , England didn’t stand a chance .
England wasnt bad. They easily won against france and cssr and only didnt go further because of lack of goalscoring against germany and spain being the better team in both matches.
Actually England did and went home undefeated, unlike Italy and Brazil.

That Honduras captain must have had one hell of a paper round if he was 23 in that footage!
Lol 😂
For obvious reasons, Argentina's opening match was not shown live on ITV or BBC1 hence Brian Moore saying that highlights would be shown on the ITN News that evening.
ITV did show extended highlights the following day before their first live coverage.
Wonderful stuff
I started watching football in 1984 so I was a bit too young to watch the 1982 tournament. 1986 I certainly remember watching though and it's still my favourite World Cup tournament. Also, only we could go out of the World Cup, even though we were unbeaten!! Apparently Bilbao was very welcoming to England fans, it was when they went to Madrid that they had problems with the police etc.
FORZA Azzurri sempre!
Haven’t seen that Scotland warm up game since 82. Soon as it came on I recalled a penalty that hit both posts before going in and there it was. In my memory it was Brazil that scored it, but turned out it was Robertson.
I was born in our World Cup year, but 82' was the first World Cup with England in it.
So the first I'd really took notice of. I was 15.
That Brazilian montage was wonderful. I’d never seen that footage before.
“It’s extraordinary we’ve gone this by far in the programme & no one’s mentioned Italy”.

Spain 1982 world cup and USA 94.were the best world cups ... IMHO..
Spain 82 and Mexico 86
Any world cup won by a European team is memorable in my book.
1982,when world cups were played in sunshine, the old telephone commentary and eruption of the crowd.
No crowd muting like you get today.
Great players we had never heard of then boom, the world cup made them household names.
And before sky tv and money ruined everything.
Italy 1990 was the last of the old school world cups. After that everything started to change.
@@tonygunk8261 I think usa 94 was still magical.After that I don't think I enjoyed a world cup until brazil 2014.
@@jaysea32 usa 94 was good but the terrible final soiled it for me a wee bit.
@@tonygunk8261 True it was a crap final.
But everything about that world cup was wonderful.
The brilliant Baggio and bebeto and Romario.
The sunshine and atmosphere.
It was similar to mexico 86.
I guess I just like world cups in sunshine.
Not like the last wc in air conditioning stadia.
Anyway my best world cups are 70,82,86,94,2014.
I've only seen highlights of 70 and 82 but some magical moments there too.
Here's hoping the next world cup brings us more joy.
Great show and analysis from Cloughie and Ian St John. Having said that nobody seemed to give Italy or Northern Ireland a chance. But having said that was the general consensus of opinion at the time as going into the tournament, Italy looked unimpressive and Northern Ireland appeared to be in absolute disarray having been annihilated by England and Wales in the home nations and France in a friendly,
That Spain training kit at 43:19 is stunning
Yes Hugh Johns lol he did Nottingham,Derby Central games. Tyler did Yorkshire games.
Carlos Alberto...... Super slick.
Ironic that Jack Charlton mentioned there was not a pillar to obstruct anyones view....well not quite as the stand that the camera was stationed while he mentioned it had quite a few of them
Brian Moore: AND WIN IT??? Clough: WHY NOT THE ALTERNATIVE TO THAT IS TO LOSE IT!!!
Moore: brilliant
Didn’t mention Italy until the end 😂
Wasn't The Theme Called Matador?
A tournament marred by the Disgrace of Gijon!
Rip Trevor Francis. I played the video of the bus door slamming into his head the other day to my son
Exciting first game in Bilbao, England with the right tactics surprised an excellent French side. But France proved later they had a team with the potential to win this cup reaching semis. England on the other hand was dissapointing with 2 boring goaless games against both Spain and Germany in the next round.
But England's best 2 attacking players were injured (Brooking and Keegan) - it was a risk, which didn't come off, by Greenwood including them in the squad - and only played 15 mins each in the last game v Spain. Without these 2, England really struggled as the tournament went on.
@@carnalea2424 Should have brought the striker of the moment Gary Shaw.
@@richardhumphrey2685along with Tony Morley. I wonder if it might have been better taking a punt on Gary Lineker in 1982, instead of picking 2 players who weren't properly fit. Lineker had just had a brilliant season with Leicester. OK it was in the 2nd Division, but I think Leicester were promoted in 81/82.
@@mrkipling2201 Yes Shaw, Morley and Lineker would have certainly given us a better chance of scoring the goals needed against West Germany and Spain as opposed to his unfit regulars, who knows if only Greenwood had trusted in the abundance of young talent that was available to him how much further we could have gone.
@@mrkipling2201I liked Shaw and Morley but they were never at the level of Brazil, France, Italy and Argentina.

The good old days...
If England didn't have the Conservative Ron Greenwood in charge we could have done better .A team designed not to lose .
This was the 1st world cup.i watched
Ah memories. Italy no chance of winning !!! England went out unbeaten. Brazil had a great team but bad defence. Algeria were cheated. Poland unlucky with Boniek out of the semi-final. West Germany as usual got to the final in those days. France should have been in final but threw a 3-1 lead away. Cameroon unbeaten. Ireland impressed and Scotland same old flaws stopped them progressing.
Boniek may have been out of the semi final but so was Italy's Gentile who had stopped Maradona and the Brazilians eariler. So I think the end result in the semi final was a fair one.
@nicky29031977 Brazil had a terrible centre forward, if Careca was fit he would have played.
@@johncarroll772 Also their star striker Reinaldo (who Zico thought would have been better than Pele had he not suffered badly with injuries) was injured just before the finals and would certainly have started ahead of Serginho, though Brazil's problems in those finals were at the back rather than up front.

England went home without losing a game.
I remember watching england versus spain as a 6 year old, couldnt understand why wenwere knocked out when we didnt lose
Yeah it was a very stupid knock out system. It's good they got rid of. England had a great team then and were capable of winning this world cup definitely

The Scots were probably slightly better than 1978 but none of the confident bravado.instead they were marked out as likely to struggle....id argue they had a better squad than england what with that liverpool spine ( hanson,souness,Dalglish)...mcgrain and the quality of Strachan,Hartford ,Robertson and Wark...far more varied options up front ( jordan, brazil, Sturrock,Archibald)

Scotland were in a very tough group - Brazil were pre-tournament favourites and the USSR were rated as the second best team in Europe (behind only West Germany) by a lot of experts. This World Cup was where Italy showed the World a new way to play. Greatest champions ever. Brazil couldn’t live with Italy. They disallowed a good goal against Brazil for Italy because it would of looked like a good hiding for Brazil. Guess what England didn’t win.

Italy were terrible in the months leading up to the World Cup, dreadful in the first group stage and terrible in the months after the '82 World Cup. However... from nowhere they finally "found" themselves, started playing brilliantly, and beat Maradona's Argentina, that brilliant Brazil team, Poland and then West Germany in the final - dramatic stuff indeed.
A huge surprise - most people were tipping Poland and Peru to finish in the top two of their group with Italy going home early.

Great to see the Soviet Union
The first World Cup I watched all of on the TV. Highlight... Spain 0-1 Northern Ireland
Should have been England - Brazil final. England never lost a match ( one reason they ditched the second group idea ). Brazil, greatest team ever, yet, Rossi poached Italy through! I will always remember the semi when Schumacher almost killed the French forward and no repercussions!
Cameroon didnt lose a game either. England failed to beat either West Germany or Spain. They didnt deserve to go through.
Surprisingly enough. Betting was totally legal back then 😂
Mad how England topped the group and ended up in a group of Spain and W Germany. France ended up with N Ireland and Austria.
Sometimes it was better to finish second. West Germany in 74 and Holland in 78 both went into 'easier' 2nd round groups after finishing 2nd.
A letter from AFC Bournemouth to Bilbao 40 years into the future will read “ Keep your city but We’ll certainly have your Stadium “ 🙄
How ironic for England to beat France 3-1 and end up in the tougher 2nd round group with W.Germany and Spain. France got N.Ireland and Austria instead, and became semi-finalists.
if england had taken 2nd place, they would certainly have gone on to the semifinal
and Italy had brazil and argentina and beat them both!
Saying that, England were lucky to be there at all - they made a complete pig's ear of a relatively easy qualifying group and would have missed out had Romania not completely lost their bottle in their last two games.
Italy nowhere when they showed the bookies odds!
So-called experts writing Italy off 😛
