Now, with stars such as Kenny Dalglish, John Robertson, Graeme Souness and Steve Archibald on their staff, they want to continue this series by participating in the 1982 world cup to be held in Spain. Pat Jennings was one of the best goalies in the world at the time.
Both Scotland and northern Ireland qualifed to world cup finals in Spain 1982 ..
33 teams in UEFA qualifiers .. 6 groups 5 teams each .. top 2 teams qualifies ..
The seventh group had only 3 teams and only one team qualified from that group ..
Result = 13 teams from Europe in finals + Spain the hosts ..
When Scottish football wasn't embarrassing.

As an Englishman. The Scots in the 70s and early 80s had a good team but couldn’t do the business when they qualified for tournaments, not that England could either. Their best win 3-2 v Holland 1978.

Jennings Chris nicholl , Dave mcreery, sammy nelson, Bryan Hamilton, sammmy mcilroy, billy Hamilton, some array of talent Northern Ireland had, best was only 33 34 aswell with his talent had he not had his drink problem could’ve been part of it aswell, qualified for second round in 1982 after beating the host s Spain 1-0
Best was picked for the initial squad of 40 but still couldn't be bothered to acknowledge Billy Binghams invite

I was 13 when the 82 world Cup was on in Spain football was my life I played to a good standard but wasn't to make a living from it But the game that changed the way I looked at football and played it was Scotland v Brazil what a game David Narey hit a kind of half volley from distance top corner what a goal I was screaming and me an England fan then the inevitable happened Zico curled that free kick right snug into the top right corner Allan Roughs left then they got 3 more and should've won the cup Socrates Eder and Junior those 3 were magicians Gordon Strachan said that scoring 1st just annoyed them lol Great memories thanks for these great vids from David

Those days, there were many talented and gifted players from Scotland , playing in the old English first division top clubs such as Daglish, Souness, Alan Hansen, Joe Jordan, Arthur Albiston, Strachan, John Robertson, Gemmil, Wark, Arcibald etc,
Whilst Hansen wAs great for Liverpool, Hewas average at best for Scotland. Miller, McLeish and Narey were much better defenders for Scotland.
Remarkable that any team could qualify with a goalkeeper like Rough

True. Back then the Scottish league was very competitive it wasnt just Celtic and Rangers but also clubs such as Aberdeen, Dundee United were competing equal for domestic and European titles.
Also every best English club of that era that won a cup, league or European title (Liverpool, Nottingham Forest, Leeds, Ipswich, Tottenham, Aston Villa) had at least one Scottish international in their squad.
I think today if they improve Scottish league structure and become more competitive for more clubs they will have strong teams again in Europe and strong national team.
The team lineup in opening seconds is Willie Miller, Davie Provan, Arthur Graham, Joe *Jaws* Jordan, Gordon McQueen, Kenny Burns, Not Sure could be David Narey, Roy Aitken, Frank Gray, Alan Rough - the captain is obscured Dalglish or Gemmell perhaps
And it also looks like a Home Championship game possibly if not probably played in Wales

Two things I miss are the pipe bands and most of all the square goal posts.
Scotland 1982 squad was brilliant. The Soviet Union match was unreal. Should have been 2-0 even 3-0 Scotland at half-time, then we let them back in it with that howler between Hanson and Miller. Had we faced Poland and Belgium, that would have been interesting, although Poland had a great side then, too. Hopefully, we see Scotland will be at ALL the Euros and World Cups from now on but the competition is so fierce now, it's anyone's game these days.
Pity they never managed to get out a group stage in their history 😢

Surprised to see players' names on the back of their shirts in 1981 [v NI]. Thought it didn't start until years later...
was thinking that myself mate so did a little research , Scotland were the first national team to do this, it started in 1979 in a friendly against Peru and was the idea of SFA president Ernie Walker after he was in the states watching NASL games. Think the NI game was probably the last game they did this until it became the norm in the early 90's
Scotland was a good team with many interesting players, although they had a better one in 1974 and 1978.

Absolutely right,so much quality Scotland back then.Unfortunately for them that they were drawn with a brilliant Brazil and a very strong USSR side.
Before my time but Wark seemed like an really good player.
Played for a great Liverpool team in two spells and Ipswich Town in two spells,the first time in a great Ipswich team,the second time not so much.

Scotland, who had finished fourth in their Euro 1980 qualifying group behind Belgium, Austria and Portugal; Northern Ireland, who'd been clobbered 5-1 and 4-0 by a bang average England team in their Euro 1980 qualifying group; Portugal, who were thrashed 4-1 by an Israel team who won no other games in this group; and probably the worst ever Swedish national team, who had endured a miserable Euro 1980 qualifying campaign, losing 3-1 at home to both France and Czechoslovakia and drawing with Luxembourg.
