1990 World Cup draw reaction

  • Reaction to the 1990 World Cup draw in December 1989, mainly focusing on England being grouped with Republic of Ireland and Netherlands as had also been the case at Euro 88 (Egypt this time the other side in the group in place of the USSR). Includes interviews with the managers of all three sides plus the great Pele, as well as a discussion between Des Lynam, Jimmy Hill and Gary Lineker (the three main Match of the Day presenters from the last 40 years all together!).
The planned March friendly between Ireland and England discussed in this video was scrapped incidentally.

Jimmy Hill was English football between the 60s to at the least the mid 90s. Not withstanding what a great player he was, he was ahead of his time in terms of keeping the ball, revolutionary and really should have been given a role within the FA. He was so much more than the controversial commentator a lot of people knew him by. English football is a lot poorer without his influence. RIP Jimmy. An absolute legend. We won't forget you.

The one of only a few England managers to do alright in the job. Not forgetting how much abuse he actually did suffer during his reign. Did great for so many clubs as well (e.g. Ipswich, PSV, Sporting Lisbon, Porto, Barcelona and Newcastle also). *Sorely missed* , along with Jimmy Hill and now Jack Charlton.

Italia 90 was a typical Scottish performance. We lost to the “unknowns” in Costa Rica (probably minimal scouting or research), great win against Sweden and then unlucky to lose against Brazil when a draw would have been enough to qualify.
That wasn’t a poor Brazil team and had many players who would feature in ‘94 but despite winning the group they were beaten by Argentina who had made a meal of their group. The Argies (Maradona excepted) were as poor a team as has ever reached the final.
