The pilot falling out the cockpit images were reenactments taken from an air disaster show that covered the whole ordeal.
Jeanie was right about the Captain (pilot) not being able to breath. He was also exposed to sub zero temperatures due to being outside the plane and having air rush over him at a couple hundred miles an hour. The crewman holding onto him thought he was dead and was only holding onto his body so that it didn't get sucked into the engine. They landed safely and it was when medics got to him that they found he was only just barely still alive. He recovered from all his injuries and retired from flying.

there is also a pod cast that covers airline incidents called blackboxdown, they covered this one as well, apparently the first officers quick reaction to go down in altitude after the decompression helped saved the pilots life as well. you have to hand it to that crew for keeping there heads in that situation.
"..and retired from flying." i should freaking think so.
I'd retire too😭
Re: the pilot out the window
The crew thought he was already dead. They held on to keep him from getting sucked into and wrecking the engine on thar side.
Yep. Even the crew members holding him suffered severe frostbite, they were sure he had frozen to death plus he was outside in air that was too thin for him to be able to breathe.

The guy falling from a failed parachute survived, not because of his gear (that might have helped him not get torn up some), but because what he hit first gave way and slowed him down enough to lower his velocity to make the full impact at a low enough velocity that he could survive.
Its not the fall that kills, but the VERY sudden stop at the bottom.
I had a speaker come to a middle school science class and talk about how his parachute didn’t deploy properly when he was training as a para trooper and he was told in the event to try and land diagonally, and he obviously ended up loving to tell the story. I tried to find something about it recently but couldn’t remember his name.
The roof probably helped some but mostly it was the fact that he still had a partially open canopy (which you can see is stuck in the roof above him. He did not fall completely without a parachute.
@@rumcaek8658 fun fact the US paratrooper anthem is called "Blood on the Risers" and tells a tale (that is based on a real story) about a paratrooper that didn't hook his parachute up to the system to deploy it before jumping out of the plane after realizing what happened he tried to deploy his reserve chute but it got tangled with is legs and arms ending up causing him to free fall head first into the ground

11:40 in case of decompression as long as plane has enough fuel to reach airport at alow altitude it simply flies closer to the earth where air is warmer and has more oxygen (usually 3000-3300 feet).
But then unexpectedly you fly into Henry's unlicensed drone and (sadly) all your effort was for naught.
That won't really help that much with the velocity of the air travelling past your face you will still have a real hard time breathing any of that precious oxygen into your lungs.
Try sticking your nose out of a car window some time and feel what breathing is like with air rushing past your face at 60mph, it feels like you are being strangled..
Now do the same in a passenger plane that typically cruises at 500+ mph. You would have a really bad time even if wind chill wasn't a thing.
If you are really brave and got a friend with a fast car you could try to breathe the same way at a speed of 160mph, that is the lowest possible airspeed for many passenger 700-series boeing's before they literally lose lift and fall out of the sky...
@@SemtexWarrior I have a pilot license (not for boeing or something like this but still). Standard procedure in such case would be to lower altitude and lower speed as much as possible. There is huge difference between no breathable air and full throttle and breathable air and minimal speed, even when minimal speed still makes it really hard to breath.
That survivor went limp almost immediately once he realizes that he was safe. I can't imagine being him, I can believe that he never thought he would be rescued.

He just survive a plane crash, it's sinking down into the sea, as you're rummaging around the dark, small room you're in, you notice the plane is upside down. The claustrophobia started kicking in. You felt water rising from beneath as you felt your foot getting wet. The room feels heavy, you can hear things happening via the relatively thin wall, and it's bouncing around the room like an echo chamber.
Your acquaintance, who is most likely dead, is currently being feasted on by THE water predator with a bite force that can tend through your flimsy metal wall. Paranoia kicks in. You're trapped inside your head.
Being saved is the last thing on his mind.

Re: the kid in the wheel well of the plane.
Sad reality is he was probably dead long before the wheel well opened. It's extremely cold at the altitude those planes fly and the air is extremely thin.
How he was falling kind of suggests otherwise we still don't know but that is very possible.
personally I think he just got too "comfortable" after hours of flying. Then the door opened up underneath him possibly when he was sleeping.
It's Schrodinger's Wheelwell :) We'll never know for sure! But these jets fly higher than Mount Everest. There's not enough oxygen to stay alive for long. Combined with the cold I don't see many people lasting.
He could have also been crushed to death when the landing gear closed. It's not like they're made for people.

Just a little known knowledge to share ;)
The Parachute guy was British SAS on a training exercise in the US. There was a civilian skydiver in Arizona that survived a double malfunction where his main AND reserve parachute failed. he survived because even though both parachutes failed, they were still above him and slowing him down *just* enough to make the impact non-fatal. He broke both legs and i think he broke his spine too but recovered.
In the UK and a lot of European countries, you have to take an exam to see if you qualify to continue on to high school. If you fail, they send you to trade school. If you pass, you get to go to high school and you take another test to see if you qualify to go to college. If you fail, they send you to trade school. There's absolutely nothing wrong with going to trade school. Tradesmen (and women) often make more money that academics. Plus in Europe, their trade school still follow the classic structure of Apprentice, Journeyman, and Master ensuring that the students learn their craft right so they won't screw their customers like contractors and tradesmen often do here. The tests the kids took at Hogswart were a satire of the texts UK students have to take and pass in order to advance. Here in the US, they do standardized testing every other year to determine if a student can go to the next grade or graduate or not.
Something similar to the bike thing happened to me, except I wasn't... whatever this guy is. Someone didn't look both ways pulling out of a driveway, hit me on my bike and it just so happened an ambulance was parked across the road.
I wasn't hurt and was able to ride away with a ticket, while the other guy got nothing. A ticket for what? For riding my bike on the side walk, instead of on the super busy, bike laneless, main road. So, yeah, that was a fun time.

so much for pedestrian right of way too. got a ticket for slamming into a car that cut in front of me in the crosswalk. They were in the outside lane of a two lane right.
@@susume6 In 90% of circumstances and law, pedestrians do not have the right of way. The only places I know pedestrians have the right of way is on US military bases (not during emergencies) and in parking lots (from US federal DMV guidelines). In US cities they have to list sidewalks separately for that privilege, and in some US cities vehicular homicide from someone jumping into the road is perfectly legal. Usually Bike lanes give bikers the right of way... sidewalks do not give rights to anyone but (usually in bad faith) protesters.
@@JohnM34404 Arizona legislation Section 28-793 prohibits pedestrians from “jaywalking,” or crossing the roadway where there is not a marked crosswalk or intersection. In these situations, a pedestrian must yield right-of-way to vehicles in the roadway, and wait until traffic clears to safely cross. The same rule applies when a pedestrian chooses to cross a roadway instead of using a provided pedestrian tunnel or overhead crossing. When there are adjacent intersections with traffic control signals, pedestrians may only cross at marked crosswalks when they receive the go-ahead from the control device.
I did not violate any of those situations and was still fined as it was the word of the officer over mine. I now record all trips.
California?
(In CA, bicycles are treated the same as motor vehicles WRT the vehicle code in most circumstances which means, yes, you *must* ride in the street, albeit as far to the right as is safe. Yes, this means bicycles can and do get speeding tickets, DUIs, stop light violations, etc. Not as often as they should, but that's another rant...)

11:11 Saw a documentary on this. The maintenance crew had used the wrong screws on the window during routine maintenance, because they were being rushed by management and couldn't find the right ones. Other screws had been incorrect sizes and poorly seated as well, for the same reason. Once the plane pressurised, it was a question of time before the window popped out like a champagne cork. On the bright side, it did result in the airlines reprioritising maintenance; so not only are planes the safest mode of transport, they keep getting safer.
There was a tree that fell down on a hiking trail I was on near Bloomington Indiana that destroyed a chain link fence, the flimsy metal pipe for the fence pole was aligned perfectly and went all the way through the 3 foot diameter tree trunk. 12:30 That soldier is incredibly lucky to have survived that fall. The amount of gear usually amounts to over 80 lbs that a soldier has to carry with them. That amount of weight would not break your fall, it would crush your ribcage. Paramilitary teams will now hang their gear below them as they parachute, so as to let their gear take the initial hit of the fall while the soldier remains relatively safe if proper parachuting procedures are followed.
What probably happened was the bag punched a smaller hole, and the rip-resistant uniform prevented him from being torn apart by the sharp roof bits as he fell feet first through the hole and was squeezed like a toothpaste tube, slowing his decent just enough. The paracords also probably got stuck in the roof bits and helped slow him down even more. That is my hypothesis.

12:30 nah, what saved him was falling onto the roof, slowing down from that impact, breaking through, and repeat for every surface in between. its not the fall that kills you, its the abruptness of the stop slamming organs (brain, heart, lungs etc.) around, stretch that out over a second or so and terminal velocity isnt so 'terminal'

Imagine being in the dark for 60 hours in an air pocket in d sunk boat. No food, water, or sleeping with a limited air supply and you can’t see anything. Terrifying. His look of confusion was probably a mix of starving, lack of sleep, and adjustment to the insanely bright lights needed for scoops diving. Truest a nightmare scenario.
