  • With the final release installed on Red Dragon - that's the one that is now going out to people who have purchased FSD (Full Self Driving) - it's time to put it to the final test. Can it make a trip through heavy traffic; late afternoon cloudy conditions; many lane change situations and complex intersections WITHOUT ANY INTERVENTIONS on my part? You'll definitely need to know how this test turns out. AND BONUS! - all my cameras AND the microphone worked perfectly :)

    Nice video…FSD is REALLY improving. I like your take on it’s pluses and minuses…objective, I’d say. Enjoy the island and Happy Holidays 🎅🏻

    Here we sit in awe, patiently awaiting a UK/European FSD. At this rate my initial investment in 2020 will be in vain I fear. With the challenge of right hand drive, I’ll be needing an FSD wheelchair at this rate. Enjoy your vacation Peter, sounds wonderful.

    Greetings from West Kelowna! It is great to see FSD in action in Canada and performing very well. I hope to get this myself in our model 3 the next couple of years but still haven't been able to achieve "wife approved" status for that - lol! Looking forward to seeing more of your videos!

      Thanks Ralph! Now we just have to work on the ‘wife-approved’ status. Gives me an idea for snigger episode :). Have to persuade Dragon Lady to take part :)

    Peter, we just got back from a cruise stop in Kauai in October. If you get a chance take the tour of the Allerten Garden National Tropical Botanical Garden and the McBryde Garden (they are located together). Fabulous. Several original Jurassic Park scenes were filmed there.

    • @model3man

      Very good question. If there are NO people in sight, it slows down only very marginally. If people are standing waiting and looking as though they are about to step onto the crossing, it always slows right down and usually comes to a very slow crawl. But if a pedestrian so much as puts a foot onto the crossing it always comes to a dead stop. Now, if the crossing has flashing amber lights it will always slow and check for pedestrians and sometimes it stops but more often just goes through slowly.

    Tesla should come up with a patent that channels the air to clean the rear camera and shield from rain and mud.

    I think it is okay for FSD to ask human to takeover as long as it does not put anyone in dangerous situations. That will take out our stress 😩 of driving already.

    Looked like water vapor from that truck and not smoke, like with all the other vehicles due to the outside temperature there.
    Wouldn't be interesting if when someone is having a medical emergency and was able to give the voice command to drive to the nearest hospital before passing out, while keeping a hand on the steering wheel, the car ends up saving the drivers life by getting to the hospital. That would be front page news and skyrocket Tesla stock. And even better if Tesla could add a repeated voice message after calling 911, telling the car's location and license plate number for emergency responders.

    FSD will never be human, but it will soon be able to drive safely among humans as a robotaxi, driving people from one address to another just like Cruise autonomous cars in California, but not as much geofenced. Over time the system will know which routes it can take and which are not possible, making little detours if necessary. People who order a robotaxi via the Tesla app will instantly be informed if the locations they entered can be reached or not. If not, the Tesla app will tell the user which is the closest address the car can drop them off.

    It's a PASS for me. I am nervous still at the turns. My observation is that pedestrian isn't restless while crossing the road as in my area, also the cars at the turns. I like to see how FSD react to those roads have old or skipped lane marking.

    FSD has made impressive leaps in the last year or two however I still can't see the value in paying whatever the latest exorbitant price is to allow me to have to pay even more attention when I drive myself or babysit a somewhat incompetent driver

    What disturbs me most about these FSD videos is that drivers are prioritizing "seeing how FSD will behave" over doing what they themselves would do in each driving situation. In many cases, this results in allowing the system to behave in ways that distract or annoy other drivers. And that's not "safe." Annoyed and distracted drivers are drivers who are more likely to make mistakes, now or going forward. Becoming an FSD tester should not give people a pass to put less effort into being good citizens of the road. I don't own a Tesla. I won't own a Tesla. And I frankly don't want to be around drivers who are playing this game. If you know how to drive better than FSD, please do it.

    • @model3man
      @model3man  Před rokem +1

      I’m afraid it’s BECAUSE you don’t understand the historic nature of this technological advance; and the importance of drivers in the hundreds of thousands putting it to the test in order to improve and perfect it for EVERYONE to benefit in the future. We present no danger to other drivers. Sometimes the car drives as if it were old and ultra cautious person. That’s not dangerous and it doesn’t cause other drivers to have accidents. It’s an important part of helping Tesla develop what is a revolutionary life-saving technology.

    • @communityband1
      @communityband1 Před rokem

      @@model3man You DO present a danger to other drivers on the road when you annoy or distract them. Angry drivers are not safe. Distracting drivers or making them nervous is not safe. And frankly, I honestly don't think you have any idea where this technology is headed. Right now, FSD makes enough mistakes to keep drivers on their toes. The better it gets, the less capable humans are going to be of performing this backup role adequately. It's the reason that people have died with Autopilot. That's likely coming for FSD as well. You aren't going to sit in your vehicle with it making no mistakes for a month and still have perfect reflexes and attention. You're human. That's not how your body and mind work.
      Do you know that Tesla has told regulators that FSD, in its final release form, is intended to be a level 2 product? This contradicts what Musk says in his marketing, promising level 4 functionality. The truth is that you can not do level 4 without human infrastructure similar to what we see with the companies designing dedicated robotaxi solutions. It's a platform that MUST come out city by city, not in a broad release, because humans can not be removed from the mix. For the foreseeable decades, they will always need to be involved, deciding when and where these vehicles can operate, inspecting them, intervening when problems occur the vehicles can't handle, and so forth. Tesla is not really giving you a step by step approach to reaching that functionality. They are selling a permanent level 2 product that will always require humans to back the technology up. And that's going to cause trouble as people fail in that role.
      Nearly 10 years ago, Google had functionality that looked a lot like what Tesla would achieve with Autopilot about 5 years later. When Google discovered that their own employees started trusting the technology too much, they made the decision to abandon that business model entirely and opt for an all or nothing approach. They understood that humans were not cut out for this gradual approach and that it would get people killed. And make no mistake - if people start dying with FSD as it starts making them relax more, we can expect to see challenges that may shut FSD down.

      Permit me a second, very well-meaning comment. My honest suggestion is this: if you are confident in your viewpoint, and don't believe you will be swayed by any arguments from Tesla CZcamsrs like myself, please do the following. Find a colleague, friend, workmate who OWNS a Tesla and HAS Full Self Driving. Ask them to take you for a drive so you can see FIRST hand what it is all about. I have taken over 10 friends and colleagues for a test drive to demonstrate to them what Full Self Driving is currently capable of. Their reactions are in this order: fear, apprehension, surprise, amazement, and finally a level of understanding that they never believed something like this could be possible. I frequently make drives through town and over distances greater than 10km through roundabouts, traffic stops, lights, sharp angular turns WITHOUT even once having to intervene or to annoy drivers behind me. Should the car delay a bit too long when lights turn green, you merely press down on the accelerator so that you DON'T annoy drivers behind you. This is an amazing technology, and Tesla drivers are willing participants in this great endeavour to develop a driver assistance technology that will REDUCE accidents and SAVE lives. Go take that ride - you will not be sorry you did
      P.S. I can of course only speak for the Canadian and American experience and I know that in other countries, it is either not yet available, or not yet mature.

      @@communityband1 I'm afraid you're simply wrong on many points. Elon is NOT saying it will remain a level 2 product. He is still indicating that within a short period it will achieve Level 4. He said that as recently as last week. Secondly, humans ARE able to monitor and still be in control should the car perform less than perfectly. We do it every day. In our hundreds of thousands. I am more alert when the car is driving and YET, I am more relaxed as the car performs many of the functions that normally bring on driver fatigue and stress. I know because I have driven many trips of 500km + using the FSD technology. You are simply misinformed, and I repeat my previous suggestion. Don't just watch videos to reinforce your viewpoint. Get in a car with an owner who has FSD and see it from within the cabin of a Tesla. You will not regret it

    • @communityband1
      @communityband1 Před rokem

      @@model3man What you don't understand, sir, is that I'm not coming at this from a low-knowledge perspective. I've been studying this in great depth, watching hundreds of videos, reading countless articles, learning about the technology and so on for years. I have documented many videos that show exactly what I'm talking about here with FSD testers prioritizing their experiment and testing over their ability to be good citizens on the road. You did that here in this video. You knew it was best to not change lanes in the intersection. You knew it was best later to not pull in front of that driver without signaling. You just didn't do it, because you were more interested in this test and making this video. In comparison to what other drivers have done, this is mild. But it still shows your frame of mind. You put other people into your experiment. That's not fair. If everyone drove this way, roads would be less safe.
