    This is crazy. Downtown Vancouver. A perfect ride - then out of nowhere, this weird FAIL from which I had no option but to disengage. I'd LOVE for someone to offer an explanation about why this could happen.

    The parked cars in the right lane threw a wrench in the works, and Red Dragon wasn’t prepared for the workaround. Otherwise a really good drive. The merges were quite the challenge, but handled well, for the most part. Thanks for showing us, Peter!

      Dennis, I think that you are right. Of course, it is an issue that needs fixing, because if a human can do it, so should a Tesla full self driving vehicle. That’s the great thing about having so many test vehicles on the road. Tesla builds up a massive database of edge cases which all need to be resolved for the car to be as competent as a human.

      Thank you so much Michael. It’s hard work setting up and producing videos that are in-car (with all the camera requirements) but appreciation like the comment you expressed here definitely provides the incentive to keep on doing it. I always do try to make the video as entertaining, and as easy to watch as possible. Thanks for viewing my offerings.

    You're a braver man than me, M3M. I have FSD 11.4.4 on my 2019 Model3 AWD but I'm still afraid to let my Model3 do FSD in heavy traffic.

    • @model3man
      @model3man  Před rokem +2

      I fully understand. I must say that it's really only because I have been testing it for so long, and become used to how the car responds, that I'm comfortable going through heavy traffic. BUT MOSTLY, I have my hands always at the ready, and my right foot is always hovering to be ready to brake, or accelerate as needed. Ad the agreement makes clear, it is ME who is responsible for the car's behaviour even when on FSD. I only relax on Freeway FSD on the open road.

    I'm glad your experiences are good - they bolster my faith, which is lacking due to my less than successful interactions with FSD. For me, it fails to understand school zones, does not always recognize highway speed signs, still exhibits some phantom braking, and changes lanes for no apparent reason. I used it on a trip to Nelson recently and it freaked out my wife to the point I dared not use it. Speaking of school zones, it will be interesting to see how they are handled in future, given our schools schedules and lack of "school zone" end signage. It has a long way to go.

    • @model3man
      @model3man  Před rokem +4

      A well expressed comment on areas that definitely need improvement. Your experience is also borne out by other testers. The bright light on the horizon is that DOJO - which is the power behind the development of the AI that facilitates the development of FSD - is increasing in processing power and speed at a rate thought not to be believable just a year ago. This increase in processing power is what will makes the improvements in all the areas currently weak or erratic and will improve the overall performance logarithmically rather than arithmetically. So I think a year from now we will be in awe!

    When I worked as an ADAS Operator, I found the car needed sufficient room to merge into turn lanes. So I think those cars parked on the curb prevented Red Dragon from getting into the lane in sufficient time, and then had to decide not to turn from the incorrect lane.

    • @model3man
      @model3man  Před rokem +2

      Everything you say seems to make a lot of sense. Of course, it’s something that will have to be fixed in the algorithm, but logically, parked cars that seem to obstruct access to a right turn lane could present the reason why red dragon failed so dismally on that particular right turn.

    In the United States vehicles merging onto the highway do not have the right of way and have to yield to the traffic, but most people will give room for merging traffic.. We also have to use the blinkers when merging.
    Allowing cars to park in one of the two lanes seems like an accident waiting to happen. Why would the city allow that?

      I did, Don. Of course it’s important to remember that other two ‘robo-taxi’ brands in the test are geo-locked to the areas where the test was conducted. Take the same test in the middle of Aspen or Calgary or Portland and the race is over before it starts. I liken it it to fish, which can only live in water. As long as they’re in the water, they’ll do extremely well. Throw them on the land and they’ll soon die and come to a stop. Tesla is like a fish that can live in the water and on the land to stretch an analogy :-)

    Very good, we all make the odd mistake, missing turnings, to err is human !. To change from C to F times by 2 and add 30, no exact but good enough for jazz!. Obviously do the reverse to change to C, 30 off then divide by two.

      Useful to know those calculations! I’ll commit them to memory and try to use them ‘on the fly’ in upcoming videos.
      Being a guitarist however, when you say change from c to F, I imagined fingering the C chord, on my guitar and then switching to the barre chord of F - given that I obsessively play guitar at every opportunity. So you can see that what we’re obsessed with is where our minds go when confronted with facts. :-)

    There's an IR emitter on the stoplight on the overpass right as the FSD disengages. The IR blast could have dazzled the guidance and stopped the system. (these emitters allow emergency vehicles to initiate a light-change so they can expedite their response)

    • @sbiefeni1
      @sbiefeni1 Před rokem

      Yes I agree with you, mistakes like that seem to be related to the mapping data, the "lanes" language they have to inform the car how to navigate the roads it's on. The nice thing about that, is that it is not a difficult fix, they just need to update their maps which is happening super fats, since all Tesla's on the road today are collecting the data.

  • @davidwebb4904
    @davidwebb4904 Před rokem +1

    You are not required to yield to joining traffic. Its entirely the responsibility for the joining traffic.

    • @model3man
      @model3man  Před rokem

      Actually that’s not quite true in British Columbia. Here’s the official policy we try to follow:
      “In British Columbia, the rules regarding cars merging from an on-ramp onto the highway follow a general principle of cooperation and safe merging. According to the BC Motor Vehicle Act, both drivers on the highway and those merging from an on-ramp have responsibilities.
      Drivers on the highway should help facilitate merging by adjusting their speed or position within their lane, if it is safe to do so, to allow merging traffic to enter. The intent is to create space for merging vehicles, helping to maintain smooth traffic flow.
      On the other hand, drivers merging onto the highway must yield to traffic already on the highway and merge when it is safe to do so. They should signal their intention to merge, match the speed of the traffic on the highway, and find a suitable gap to merge smoothly.”
      So we both have a responsibility to help each other.

    • @davidwebb4904
      @davidwebb4904 Před rokem +1

      @@model3man Drivers on the highway “should” (entirely optional) help facilitate merging. Drivers merging MUST yield to traffic already on the highway. Being nice, helping others, is not in any law that I have ever heard of.

    • @model3man
      @model3man  Před rokem

      @@davidwebb4904 However, that doesn’t detract from the fact that the law even mentions what drivers already in the lane should be doing. I agree. I’m just trying to be as honest about its strengths and weaknesses whenever I put it to the test.
