  • After the restoration of my car's firmware, and the restoration of all my settings and profile, I installed the most recent FSD software, and this afternoon, took the car for a test drive using a stretch of road with lots of intersections; then a short trip on the Trans Canada freeway, and then LOTS of curvy backroads and steep hills to see how it performed.
    All I can say is that I am stunned! Watch for yourself

    Great video Peter, overall as you said very impressive. Really hopeful we may get it in the UK in the near future, probably a lot of red tape to overcome first, but I'm really excited at the prospect. Keep up the good work 👏

    Peter, your videos are always pleasant and relaxing to watch.
    Last weekend I did a 350 Mile Day trip to the NW suburbs of Chicago. The car handled local OFF freeway driving very well. I was impressed considering I’d never driven the routes before. Once in a while I would intervene ( accelerate) where I felt it was waiting too long at an intersection to turn unless there was no one behind me.
    I did experience one unexpected slowdown on the freeway. The speed limit displayed on screen suddenly dropped from 70 mph to 55 mph even thought there was no construction or speed limit sign to cause the change. This of course occurred in the NOA stack, which seems to rely more on geo tagged information as opposed to how FSDbeta handles it. This particular area I was driving had been part of a major freeway expansion project that was completed 2 years ago, but some of the old construction area speed limits are still present in the navigation data. This is why its so important to get the Vision only FSD solved and rely less on fixed Navigation geo tag references that don’t get updated in real time. Heck the street that I drive into my neighborhood had it’s name changed 5 years ago and is displayed on the screen properly but the navigation voice still uses the old name when turning onto it. You would think by now there would have been an update in the navigation data to correct it.

      @model3man  Před rokem

      Intriguing! I’m in full agreement with you. I’ve experienced unexpected speed changes too and yes, the car should be responding to actual signs rather than geotagged data- at least, where there is a discrepancy between geotagged data and visual, it should use the visual inputs

    Fantastic, it will come into its own for visitors like us in the UK who drive on the left, finding it a bit confusing at times driving on the ‘wrong side of the road’. I can’t wait for FSD to come over here, our MYLR has full auto pilot right now, as I get older this self during will come into its own….luckily I’m only 69 right now so plenty of driving left in me !

      That is absolutely true. Recalls for Ford, GM, and the other automakers happen all the time - but you NEVER hear of them in the mainstream media. But if it's TESLA... It's just such hypocrisy. And fully intentional!!

    We're in SE Arizona at our winter home with our TM3. I've found that the car will phantom brake when it sees the mirage effect on roads and freeways. A few times I've had to take it out of Autopilot when on the I-10 due to excessive phantom braking.

    • @model3man
      @model3man  Před rokem +1

      Yes! That still appears to be a very real issue, and I'm sure the agile minds in the Tesla FSD department are working on ways to adjust the algorithm to finally, once and for all, make phantom braking a thing of the past. Of course, as drivers who are STILL actually in control of the car, the minute we even feel that the car is braking for no reason, we quickly press the accelerator pedal and thereby present no danger to those who are following. It's only the drivers who are so laid back and relaxed that get caught out when it happens - and that can really be a dangerous event as cars behind definitely have no expectation that the car ahead will be braking for no reason. So - it's still up to us to stay awake, aware and alert. (The 3 A's?)

    • @dmunro9076
      @dmunro9076 Před rokem +1

      @@model3man Yes, it is up to the driver to stay alert. On my 2020 Prius Prime, the car's radar cruise would often miss vehicles that were stopped (especially when they were on a downhill slope), so this isn't a purely Tesla thing. I've gotten used to when AP might misbehave and will take appropriate precautions.

    Peter: Nice video! It was really interesting to see how it handled such a wide variety of traffic situations. One thing I was curious about was whether your various updates have had any effect on phantom braking. I don't have FSD and there are a few places around town where my M3 slows down very aggressively. It's almost always the same places where there are no other cars, no bridges, no shadows and no curves. Frustrating!

    • @model3man
      @model3man  Před rokem

      My phantom braking has dropped dramatically with each update. However slow downs do occur when the geotagged data shows a street at a much lower speed than the visual posted signs. That still needs to be attended to.

      NOA WAS actually on all of the time. HOWEVER, it appears that when I stretch the animation screen to FULLY occupy the screen, that notification disappears and simply does not show anywhere. Then, when I dragged back to reveal the map and the navigation course, it was at the bottom of the screen as normal.

      I confidently believe it is, Susan. After all, Tesla has no knowledge of when you ARE going to accept the FSD terms and conditions, and give it a try. So yes - software updates come to all. Even when not actually using it.

    I have the latest update and have taken a 4 hour round trip drive numerous times and to me it's gotten worse. For instance, using Autopilot on the highway with NOA off there are areas still on the highway where the blinker come of to take the exit and it should be doing that, it should be giving me a notification because even if NOA was on I don't have auto lane changes turned on. I still get phantom braking events and when people are merging onto the highway my car doesn't slow down but then brakes hard for them. On City streets in FSD beta the wipers come on during Sunny days, spraying wiper fluid all over my clean car and the cars next to me, because it always happens at a light. And at night the Auto High Beams keep coming on blinding oncoming traffic and bothering traffic in front of me. Oh, and if I'm in an area with no streetlights at night I always get a notification sayin FSD is inoperative because some cameras can't see, yet FSD seems to still be working. And I'm still getting an issue where my car hugs the left side of the lane, especially during bends in the road with adjacent traffic to my left and my right is clear. The car should be moving away from the other cars, even though we are both going in the same direction. Look, I want it all to work but at least in my experience it's getting worse.

    • @model3man
      @model3man  Před rokem

      Well - it definitely sounds like there are very real issues in your experience of FSD. What region of the world are you in? US? Canada? Further afield? However, there are a few points that may be down to not understanding exactly what a setting is meant to do. For instance, if you have NOA turned off, while it won't change lanes by itself, it will be aware that the turn off should be taken since you have mapped your destination and that exit is part of the route. So the car overrides in that context. You say that if you NOA turned on, but have automatic lane changes turned off, it still makes lane changes. That is actually correct! If you have NOA ON, it will override settings that prevent NOA from doing its job. When you turn off automatic lane changes, the car overrides that because it HAS to in order to get to where it needs to go. Remember that NOA is a higher order setting that may make the car do things that contradict certain 'lower order' settings in the controls. Then there are other behaviours over which you have NO control if you are actively using the FSD mode: turning on the wipers and spraying the windshield is one of those. I know that you may think there is no need for it to do it, but there might be something partially obscuring one of the front-facing cameras and the FSD algorithm thinks it needs to activate the fluid and wiper action. So, it is a complex dance (getting the FSD software to work perfectly in every situation) and we are not there YET - but, as I said in the title, I am 98% confident it will be this year where a major breakthrough is made and the majority of these edge cases will be a thing of the past

      @@model3man I'm in the US and will look into the things you said, thanks for the information. But the Auto Wiper required for FSD beta coming on, on a sunny day when my windshield was perfectly clean, is beyond annoying. There was no reason for it to come on unless the camera got blinded by the Sun, I don't knew but either way it would be better if it were not required to be on.

    • @model3man
      @model3man  Před rokem

      @@Resist4 - yes. That must be completely annoying. As you say, it may have had something to do with sun and glare. But still, it was the wrong remedy. Of course though, if it IS raining then it would have been an appropriate response to automatically turn on the wiper system. Lots of bugs 🐜 🐛 still to iron out!
