  • One day my car was perfect: FSD, Autopilot, everything behaving perfectly. The next morning, I get into Red Dragon and the car's software has crashed! All settings gone! Profiles lost. Destinations in Navigation lost. All driving settings back to default. No seat, mirror or steering wheel settings left. All my Autopilot, Safety and Navigation settings gone. No FSD or Autopilot! Here my experience and what I had to do to fix things again.

    I had the exact same thing happen to me back in December, but mine was a little worse. I have the FSD beta, and when my car reset I also had a SW update waiting for me. Of course I downloaded it thinking it might help me get my profile back, but it didn't...it was actually SW for non-FSD beta, so now I lost my FSD beta. After resetting all of my profile info, I had to wait another week for the next SW update to arrive and this time it did include the FSD beta. After investigating, I discovered that the Tesla developed a corrupt file over time. The way it handles a corrupt file is to do a factory reset to blow it out and start over. Tesla considers this a safety feature. They would rather play it safe and have you rebuild a profile than for the corrupt file to cause a major glitch while driving and cause an accident. I actually agree with this. BUT...I would think that our roaming profiles would be able to download back to the car from the cloud. This is where Tesla needs to make improvements!

      That is very enlightening! Thank you. Yes - that sounds like a very logical way for Tesla to ensure that a corrupt software profile doesn't lead to some major issue especially when being driven. I believe though, that as long as you have set up your profile (in the Driver Profile Settings area of the Touchscreen, that your major profile settings ARE kept in the cloud and can be retrieved after a crash like we both experienced. That really will make things less stressful when everyone gets to know about that - and use it. Thinking of doing an episode on that feature alone

    The very first thing you should have done was hit the microphone and say "bug report". Hopefully that would send info to Tesla so that they could figure out what happened and stop it from happening again for anyone else. I was driving with FSD Beta and suddenly got tons of warning messages. No regenerative braking, FSD not available, etc., etc. I managed to get it back to normal after I got to my destination with a car re-boot. And since then it has been fine. I was in to the service center a few days later and mentioned my problem and asked if they could figure out what happened. My advisor said too much time had gone by, and suggested the "bug report" if it ever happened again.

    • @model3man
      @model3man  Před rokem

      Good suggestion, that one! I have actually since discovered a ton of similar reports like what happened to me. I'm guessing Tesla is familiar with the phenomenon and perhaps that was why they brought out the .10 revision so quickly after the .5. I also discovered that it is now possible to restore major profile settings from the Tesla cloud (so long as you have set it up in Driver Profiles along with your email address) but of course that does not recover all the lost trip data you may have accumulated over the years of saving trips (for example, I had a trip that included EVERYTHING I did, winter and summer, and it had a nice average of the number of kW/hrs used per km. Fortunately, I had taken photos over the years so still have a good idea of how 'consumption' has gone over time.

    • @iowa_don
      @iowa_don Před rokem

      @@model3man My Bad. the TeslaOwners Online community has a bit more info on "bug report":
      We had various inklings about how it actually works from Tesla Service Center technicians. They would tell people to take a "bug report" after reproducing some issue, and then tell their technician the approximate time of when the bug report was taken. Then they are able to look through the car's logs to see the information that was saved for that report.
      To clarify, "bug report" saves some vehicle state to a file. That information can later be brought up and examined by a Tesla service technician to help diagnose problems. It does not send anything to the mothership. Tesla engineers never see these reports. It just saves some system state to a file on the car itself - it doesn't get transmitted to Tesla or anywhere else.
      We've got confirmation from @greentheonly that not only is this the case, but it also does not record any autopilot information. So don't bother taking bug reports for autopilot issues.

    Same happened to me a few months ago on my M3P
    Had to Reset all the settings again too.
    Sadly one thing I couldn’t restore was my trip data which I had one set and saved for the life of the car since I picked it up brand new and the associated total kW usage and kW/Mi over the cars entire life usage.
    Gutted 😢

    Just got "wiped" by the latest update - trip data from day 1, 4 years ago, gone. Homelink for 2 gates and a garage, gone. Seat and other settings, gone. Really pisses me off! I'm gonna drive it like I do my old analog compact pick-up now - no settings.

      @model3man  Před rokem +1

      @@rwess Hey Roy. I understand how annoying it feels as it happened to me (as you know from the video I posted and to which you have commented). However, you have to realize that the Tesla (and all of the modern crop of TVs) are basically just computers on wheels, and computers sometimes crash and lose their settings. That is why Tesla allows you to back up your personal profile and settings in their cloud. Here is a link to another CZcamsr video that I came across which spells it out quite well. czcams.com/video/6d0lkOtLRgg/video.html.
      Now, given that our computers can crash and lose their information during an update (which generally happens extremely rarely) we prevent that by performing periodic backups of the computer data. That is exactly why Tesla have provided cloud synchronisation for the Tesla profile and settings. So, far from ignoring the problem they have provided a solution. There will NEVER be a time when it is possible to completely eliminate ALL possibility of a software crash / reset / loss of data, BUT with the cloud synchronisation they have provided, it is easy to restore those settings.
      Now, it is true that your TRIP data is the one area where you will lose information BUT, you should record it in some way periodically (snap a photo / write it down / create a spreadsheet and enter it there) which is a wise thing to do anyway.
      It's important to remember that this is not merely a car, but a very powerful AI-ontrolled computer on wheels - subject to all the vagaries of what we have come to expect from regular computers.
      Also remember that the computer crash presents NO danger when driving. Your touchscreen can safely reboot - or shut down - and you can still control all of the functions of the car without it. But I realise that the annoyance and inconvenience can be a very real thing - but I would encourage you to be a little forgiving to Tesla and not "throw the baby out with the bathwater" so to speak. There is no better EV on the market; no more advanced, well designed, and amazingly efficient EV than the range of Teslas on the market today.
      So, watch that video I linked to above, make sure you have synchronised your settings with the cloud, and relax and enjoy your Tesla the way I do :)

    UGH. That is very discouraging. Tesla should have some sort of periodic back up to your USB drive which could contain all of your settings which you can restore with a few commands. Supposedly Tesla keeps some of your information in the cloud and you can download it. If the problem you experienced is common, Tesla should have a way of restoring it rather than have you do it all manually.

      Hi Daniel. You make a very good point. Answer is that I don't know... but you can be sure I'm going to find out and see if recovery might be possible that way. I don't mind that i had to manually reset all my settings. That's no big deal. Logging in to Netflix and Spotify - again no big deal. Even driving profiles for seat position, mirrors and steering wheel - no problem. I noticed it right away when I got in and it was on NPR (I usually listen to podcasts), had charged to “trip” rather than commute, and my braking was so weird. Then, my garage door wouldn’t close behind me as Homelink was gone, my name wasn’t on the screen and it didn’t have my home and work addresses. I have since changed the charge capacity back to commute and put in my home and work addresses. Not looking forward to the annoyance of re-installing Homelink .

    Once when I got a firmware update I lost everything, all my settings and passwords, my lifetime kWh, my odometer settings and even my Premium Connectivity Satellite map. This was extremely inconvenient and took time to redo everything. My odometer settings came back after driving but I completely lost my lifetime kWh, which bummed me out. This really is unacceptable and a huge downside to owning a software based vehicle. Had this happen to me while on a trip I wouldn't have had my passwords to get Netflix or CZcams back. Current smart phones are pretty darn reliable now and so are home computers. So Tesla needs to make our cars just as reliable, actually more reliable. We can't even call a Tesla Service Center to get help when something like this happens and if your car is outside of the warranty, then you're screwed. Elon needs to get back to work at Tesla and stop playing around with that Twitter crap!

    • @model3man
      @model3man  Před rokem

      Well - I think it's more the software engineering team that takes care of this type of issue - and merely reports to Elon. So his brief diversion with Twitter should not affect the main Tesla Mission too much - especially looking forward to the Investor Day (March 1st) revelation on the new (3rd) platform that seems to be ready for a big announcement. I have two adult daughters waiting DESPERATELY for Elon to release the details of the much touted cheaper (> $25,000) vehicles as they've held off from falling for a "Bolt" or other cheaper EVs.

      @@model3man But didn't Elon specifically say they weren't working on a $25k EV? That's right, he did. He may have people working on things but he's more and more getting out of the loop. I mean he even said he didn't know there were service center issues, which still haven't been fixed 2 years later. And we still don't have a fix for the Sentry Mode Viewer, it's buggy beyond belief. Also, remember when he said that Tesla's research showed that customers don't want our cars to power our homes during blackouts, this was so not true. My point is, he's got so much on his plate causing distractions and his people aren't keeping him informed enough.
