How a Worn CV Axle Can Cause Vibration

  • This video is mainly an informational video. In this video I have a great example of a CV axle with a worn inner joint that caused a vibration upon acceleration. I take the inner joint apart and show what happened to the inner joint and explain how a worn inner CV axle joint can cause a vibration upon acceleration.
Note: While it is very common for a worn inner CV axle joint to cause a vibration upon acceleration you need to keep in mind that this is not the only thing that can cause this symptom. You will need to properly diagnose your vehicle before performing a repair. Below is a link to a video that will give you SOME information to help you in diagnosing a vibration upon acceleration. (while this video has great information, it may not have ALL the information you need to properly diagnose your vehicle.)
Here is the link to that video: • Vibration Under Accele...
Also, the explanation of how an electric motor can slow a vehicle down was just a superficial explanation. Of coarse it was not the purpose of the video to go into depth about that. Also at about the 1:00 mark I mention that the electric motor slows the vehicle but I did it in a way that may seem like I said the motor uses the brake rotors to slow the vehicle down. What I was trying to say is that the motor, not the brakes, slow the vehicle.

In addition to slight vibration on acceleration, there is vibration when breaking hard at highway speeds. It's not the rotors. The cv axle (passenger side) would also make a rumbling sound when banking left above 55mph. It made a little noise on slow sharp turns-no clicking just a rumble. The boots have failed, making a mess. Getting it replaced today. I've learned my lessons about putting off repairs...it's no picnic. Great Video.

Thanks for that explanation. i recently bought a second hand car and had a vibration develop while going down hill with a feathered throttle at 75-80kmph. Eventually, on longer 25-30km trips the vibration would develop at any speed.
This was just after a clunk occurred and I was lucky to find a bolt from the RH inner CV sitting between the suspension arm and a chassis member. LUCKY!
Looking into replacing the Axles this month!

Oddly enough, after several months of vibration when braking at 65mph+, I got this idea it might be the inner CV joint causing it on my CT200h. I’ve experienced the inner CV joint vibration on acceleration and didn’t think it could be the inner CV joint unless it also happened during acceleration.
Will know for sure once I replace it with a known good.

Thank you for creating these videos...I don't know much about cars, (but wish I did!).. when my PT Cruiser started vibrating upon acceleration recently..I took it for service right away.
Despite my description of what was concerning me, the garage seemed to only plug the car into the diagnostic machine. They claimed it needed new plugs and wires...$700+..
OK...I guess?...I do know that bad plugs, and cracked wires can affect a car's smooth running. Those parts were original to the car(2006-I checked thru my bills to make sure)..
They called me at the end of the day, to say it ran better...but it still juddered. ..they also swapped out the rotors, to see if those were warped...(they were not)
After a few days...the car was finally fixed. It was the RF axle/CV joint.
Fearing an astronomical bill...to my surprise, they admitted their "misdiagnosing".. and changed the axle and rotors no charge.
This PT has been a great car, relatively few problems over the years.
I figure to keep it going as long as I can. As a senior, I'm in no position to take on a new car, or car payments, nor do I really want to.
I just wish mechanical stuff was taught in schools to women way back when. We weren't allowed to take any shop type courses when I was a youngster.
I will be checking out more of your videos in future..as the PT ages, it's going to need more fixing I'm sure...so thank you for sharing all this info!

I have a 2012 Audi Q5 that I bought about 4 months ago. From the day I drove it off the lot there was a problem with a very subtle vibration not visually noticeable but definitely felt through the entire car steering wheels/seats dashboard at all speeds from 30 km/h and upwards with no limit. The faster you drive the more noticeable it is. I have had this car in and out of about 15 shops/mechanics and I'm at the end of my rope and my patience. Ive had the wheels balanced/Road Forced/alignment multiple times along with other shops trying to diagnose unsuccessfully. I've been told everything from CV Joint to Struts and coils/mounts to control arms/tie rods and wheel bearings or tires feathering/cupping. Some shops have even said U joints or propeller shaft or torque converter. Everyone wants throw parts at the car and not one mechanic do I trust. The vibrations are making me so angry when I drive and I would rather do the repair myself but not sure if your video applies to non hybrid Quattro style german cars. It's more noticeable upon acceleration, but also there during coasting or braking just not as much. I'm desperate for answers

The info in the video is common to most vehicles that use CV style axles, to a degree. Have considered taking it to an Audi dealership to have it properly diagnosed?

    • @citylumberjack8381
      @citylumberjack8381 Před 5 lety +2

I did take it to Audi, actually 2 different Audi's. One said front brakes and rotors so I had them replaced. $900. The other said it needs a road force balancing with proper adapter - donut shaped not spherical - and proper wheel alignment. $600. Its like burning money. I hate dealerships, I don't trust them and this car is well out of warranty. Audi wants another $700 just to diagnose and disassemble parts to inspect with no guarantee of finding or fixing problem. At what point do I put my foot down and say enough? If they actually change the CV joint/s it will mostly likely be in the range of $1500 - $3000. Its not even inflation its absurdity. A regular mechanic will still charge at least $1200.00 as per quote with OE parts if that was even the problem.

I'm gonna get under my own car in the morning as I just got home and it's freezing (northern USA Maine) because since yesterday I've noticed a pretty good vibration going on in the front end. Being I've had the same issue before but it was snow that did it last year it was frozen inside the back of the rim ( aluminum rims) these on my 06 G6 are steel and I see no snow from just looking we'll see in the am what I find. The vibration starts around 40 or so and worse at 60 so I kept it at 50mph on the way home from work. Definitely giving a thumbs up on the video. If you comment back I'll respond. I know I need ball joints, sway links excitedexc exc only had it on the road for about a 10k miles which I knew it needed those parts just wanted to make sure the trans or anything else is broken. I have a Hyundai i40 that has got this replaced 2 times now with only 40k miles on the clock. I just put on a brand new driveshaft again and the wobbling is almost gone but I can still feel it slightly under load sometimes. Seems like there is something else wrong with this car that makes the driveshaft wear way to fast. I talked to the previous owner and he said he had complained about this while the car was under warranty but Hyundai just said it was nothing. Probably the wheels or bad road surface. But now we see it was not ''nothing'' . It's something serious. A drive shaft should last MUCH longer than 20k miles.
Wheels and alignment are spot on. Got several very experienced mechanics to check everything and they don't really know what it can be. Motor mounts are ok to.

My wife's 2011 Rogue feels like the transmission slips two or three times in quick succession when you are coasting and then apply the accelerator to start climbing a slight incline. It does it between two and four times or so and feels like something is slipping and trying to lock-in to pull. I assumed her CVT transmission was going bad since they are known for that, but for some reason this particular year model has been excluded from all the complaints from the years before and after with cvts. I admit she hasn't changed the fluid, but when it was being serviced at the dealership I asked them to do it and since the fluid was kind of dark they recommended I didn't do it or it might make the problem worse. It has about 135,000 miles on it. They said there were no codes stored pertaining to the transmission when I was having them try to diagnose it. The problem really hasn't gotten much worse since we first noticed it about 7 months ago. I know we have a torn CV boot for the passenger side CV axle and it needs to be replaced. if it has begun to wear while the boot has been torn, is there any chance it could cause a symptom like I described?

Nothing surprises me anymore. If these cheap knock offs last a year Ill be impressed.

Oddly it only made a thump, thump sound like a tire that had bump in the tread. Hope this helps somebody.

Now while going down the hill my car steering wheel vibrates quite a lot. Yesterday I checked the inner passenger CV axle and it has an up and down play. I suspect this will be the issue with the vibration while pressing the brakes.

Hi, I have hamming/vibrating noise coming from passenger side, when I'm sitting in driver seat. It's like something is spinning in uneven way. Zero up to 100 km/h nothing. It starts at 100 km/h, peaks at 110 km/h and disappears at 130 km/h. That sound is definitely connected only to car speed and not to engine rpms. Its louder when pressing gas pedal/accelerating, but it does not disappear completely when not accelerating. Its not engine, because that sound is same when in neutral or any other gear. Its not unbalances tire or wheel. I tried many different wheels. Ball joints are perfectly firm. Sound does not change when braking. There is no play in wheel in any direction. I've already changed both sides bearings and inner transmission side axl homokinetic joint since I found this joint could cause this sound. No rubber boots were damaged. All looking good as new. I used high quality replacement and nothing helped. Axl itself looks perfectly fine. I also tried clicking test when turning full left, full right and accelerating. Nothing, there is no clicking sound. No I dont know, this sound started just like that 4 month ago and does not get better or worse. Still the same. I didnt hit pot hole or anything. I'm driving quality highways. My car is vw golf 6 with only 110 000 km in very good shape. Now I plan to change outer wheel side homokinetic joint, but I dont believe it will fix it. I will be glad for all ideas and suggestions.
