  • Your CV Axle connects your wheels to the transmission, which allows your car to drive. In other words, they're important. So it's even more important that you understand common CV Axle issues, and how to identify them. We're here to help you learn all about CV axles, and know when you're in need of a repair or replacement.

Thanks for the video. This helped me confirm that my outer CV joint needs to be replaced. Here are my symptoms: wheel vibrations (more noticeable on freeway) but wheel balance didn't fix it, a click/pop noise when wheels are fully turned left and I am making a hard stop, clicking noise during a sudden stop after coasting, and more road noise while coasting. When my inner joint went bad, I would get a wobble and wheel vibration on moderate to hard acceleration. If you have a Honda, don't use AutoZone axles. Go with Raxles, Insane Shafts, or OEM from salvage yard.

Honestly I think this is exactly what’s wrong with my girlfriends car . I just learned how to clean her mass airflow sensor for the first time 😃 and now I’m going to try to see if I can find out where the damage is with this video because every time we turn the steering wheel all the way it makes that popping/clicking sound like in your video . Thank you so much for this video bonebreak!

Little tip here. Just yesterday I installed front driver side cv axel from Autozone and the circlip on the trans side had an end gap too small and it was causing the shaft to not push into position. Took a while for me to figure out. I replaced it with the one off the original shaft and it popped in beautifully. That part was one of the Autozone

Hi great video and informative. I bought drive axle set for the front wheeldrive on my chevy avalanche just over a year ago. I checked them recently when the car was on axle stands (front wheels off floor). The axle shaft between inner and outer has some end play, is this normal? (Grabbed the shaft and it moves in and out a few millimeters).

I bought a set of brand new duralast! cv axles for a 09 Ford Fusion and installed them. On the very first test drive turning left or right they vibrate viciously. So I returned them for another set and got the same problem than rebuild the factory shafts with ford parts and it's perfect. Just to be clear I have been certified for five years in manual transmission and axle and automatic transmissions. With all due respect Autozone's hard parts are garbage!!!

Can it be a situation, when there is a clicking sound (accordingly malfunctioning of the CV Axle), but
the boots on it are good (not torn, no leak or anything). 2001 Saturn SL2: I can hear occasionally,
actually almost always on sharp turns, the clicking noise, but the boots on CV Axles are not torn, I
don't see any leaks, seems like everything is fine. I bought already a set of new CV Axles, the car has
over 100k, so anyway time to change them, but that is a question for me about that clicking noise
without any visual signs on the boots. In all the films on this subject everyone shows a combination of
torn boots and clicking sound. Thank you for informative film.

I have had a Subaru forester 1997 (automatic) from new (approx. 70,000 miles on the clock), that has been great for all the years with very little to do other than annual services. However, recently I have had a lot of vibration & shuddering on the wheels when making tight turns (left or right) but never on the straight. It is difficult to identify which wheels the noise or shudder comes from and I don't feel much through the steering wheel. I have had all differentials replace that has reduced the frequency but not eliminated the problem. We hope it isn't the automatic gear box but has anyone got any ideas what to do next.

3:49 use this tool ONLY if you gonna change those ball joints for new ones. The tool will tear boot, as you can see in the video, and sooner or later, you will have same problems like with torn boot on cv axle - grease will come out and dirt will come in leading to destroy of ball joint.

car engine clicks when releasing foot of clutch pedal, specially if a bit fast, and even if sow, it fees and looked like whole engine tries to get out of car body, like its not tighten enough to it, even though its tightened well.

Its not the steering, atleast i think, its really really soft. Also the steering pulls to the left very faint. I checked the CV joints but dont see any wear on the booth. I did see something which likes like dried oil with dirt. Ill let it check asap. I thought it was either this or bent tierods.

Elise Davidson you need to have an alignment after this type of work. Tie rod ends directly effect alignment and in this case, you needed to remove them and reinstall them on the axel. This means your alignment is now slightly/way off.

That's what? $120? Not possible. It cost $100 just for the axle I got at AutoZone. It only takes an hour to replace if you don't run into problems but shops charge $100+ an hour here. And they'd go by the book which is usually twice the time it actually takes. And they always double the price of any equipment they purchase. That's minimum $200 a side.

I have a 2011 Kia Sorento and I found a split boot on my passenger side CV joint. The grease had been expelled from the outer boot, so I know I should replace it. But here's my question. I was in the process of diagnosing a wheel pull issue that led me to this discovery. I thought the problem was a worn strut or linkage component, but the CV issue was the only thing I found. Is a sloppy CV joint the reason my wheel pulls to the right on acceleration? I don't hear the classic clicking or vibration sounds for a bad CV joint. I do have a wheel pull issue though. Does this make sense? Anyone else experience this symptom as well?

Yea i am getting vibration on the left side when i go around a right corner. Looking into getting my joints repaired instead of replacing them with poor quality Taiwan made ones.

How come it always seems after I use the donut tire my CV joint starts to make noise?!

    • @anthonypreziosi30
      @anthonypreziosi30 Před 2 lety

@ Scott Amaral...Donut tires are an insulting ripoff from the car industry...years ago the donut tire never existed...never drive fast or long on a donut...your donut tire is actually putting serious damage to the axle and the bearings inside...put a REGULAR TIRE ON AS SOON AS POSSIBLE...your axle is probably ok

Louiness Paul what exactly was your car doing before you replaced the part? Im having terrible vibration when accelerating and when turning right it's 10x worse. Turning left is smooth and normal tho. I replaced both front wheel bearings with no luck.. any info would be much appreciated man i just dont wanna keep throwing parts on and burning money when it doesnt fix my problem

Whiteberg Slim Hey slim, how much was your final costs? Dealers inspected my vehicle and said both front axles need to be replaced and are asking for a grand total price of 1,350.00$ . Autozone says they only costs between 80-100 !! Appreciate your time.

It can be repaired but it’s better to replace the whole half shaft or cv axle

Does anyone really go to the trouble of removing one of these CV axles and fix a torn boot? They are $50-$60 each. Put in a new one and be done with it.

@@ardeenwalters2472 I got 2 bad Calipers from NAPA the last 2 weeks. It's a pain trying to get good parts these days.
Even so, get a new rebuilt CV axle, don't fuss with the boot. It's to much time and trouble to go it there and fix a boot, put it back in only to have an old bearing to fail on you in a month. Fixing a boot is penny wise and pound foolish.

Not all $50-60. Mine are running a bit more, even the cheaps are $70-80 but yes, I am replacing the whole axle. It’s lasted 115k miles, I’d say it’s due. I’ll let the other side go as long as it sounds and feels fine.
