An axle click is a repetitive clicking or clunking nose you hear while your vehicle is moving. It will typically click faster as the vehicle moves faster. The cause behind this is often a problem in a CV joint due to exposure, or wear. Len shows you how CV axles work, and why it's important to keep their boots in good shape to prevent the dreaded axle click!

Been fixing cars and trucks for 40 years and have watched hundreds of CZcams videos. Lots of great mechanics out there, but this guy is the best one for providing on-camera instruction. A1 Auto is very fortunate to have him.

Great vid, one small mistake was you identified the outer bearings “race” it is in fact a cage. Bearing races are the surfaces that bear weight the cage is what keeps the balls/rollers separated and inside the bearing
Good video, my very first car was a 1994 Mazda Protege and that thing had the loudest clicking half shafts I've ever heard. And it all started with a torn boot, now 15 years later I inspect all the boots on all my cars. Good preventive maintenance.

Be sure to appreciate how much easier it is to turn after new axles are installed. First time I did some full turns after replacing them on a GMC Yukon I was truly amazed.
Thank you for you lesson, it was much helpful for me. I was trying to fix my ball joint, wich took me a lot of time to sort, but during the process I separate the cv from the axle. After manage to put it back I was wondering if it should have a click to connect to something inside. So your video helped me to understand better the procedure.
great explanation and super thorough detail on installing one, going through this right now myself but i already got the old axle out, good tip at the end about not separating the tripod bearing from the boot on the install.

GREAT DETAILS EXPLANATION . I LEFT MY CAR JACK UP WHILE FRONT WHEEL HANGING OFF THE GROUND FOR 4 MONTHS . AND NOW MY CV AXLES IS OFF PLACEMENT AND NOW IS MAKING NOISES AS IT DRIVING. MY ADVISE NEVER HANG THE CAR UP FOR LONG PERIOD OF TIME BETTER OFF LET IT SIT ON GROUND INSTEAD. HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS REPAIRS FOR STUPID MISTAKE.
I learned more than any other Scotty Kilmer DIY vid. Keep it up man I heard this clicking ln the right axle when I hit a pot hole hard with a big bang! Then I noticed it kept clicking and clicking. Took it to the Toyota Dealership my car being a 2010 Toyota Corolla LE. They replace my 2 axles for $1,500!!! Then I hear it again for many months everyday I drive the car. This week it has gotten worse and now the clicking is accompanied with a weird squel or grind sound while turning in my driveway

YO! I was installing new axels and managed to separate an axel by accident. I was super worried I screwed something up. I got it back in buy taping it back into place many, many times with a mallet. Now that I have a clearer picture of what's inside it makes a lot of sense why that worked. Every time I smacked it I was jiggling those bearings back into their slots. Thanks for the video!

Thank you!!!! I separated the axel on my 09 Corolla 1.8l , was changing the strut the knuckle came down ,tore the boot and it separated from the axel, managed to put it back in but now got to replace both axles
I got lucky with my CV joints. Ball joint popped out and so did the CV joint, reversing in a parking lot. Towed home. Replaced lower control arm and managed to get the CV joint back in. By constantly pushing and jiggling as I spun the axle around (For like 10 minutes straight). My boot also came off, so I could see where to start them. In the winter time of course. Always gotta happen in the winter.

Thank you so much for explaining how the bearings on the inner joint have to be spread outwards to go back in if your axle falls out. I've been trying to get my axle back in, and it will not go back in, and I'm pretty sure this is why.

If you cant wait for new clamps , and need to get going without OCD alerts,
you can just mount one extra identical screw clamp 180 degrees opposite to the other so they cancel out the unbalance.
Probably obvious to commoners, but there are always those people, that makes it worth mentioning =)

Plus the idea is bogus on the face of it. Wheel weights come in ounce increments and are put 7-9 inches away from the axle centerline. The weight of a clamp is tenths of an ounce and are about an inch from the axle centerline. A screw clamp will work fine and not affect balance significant, but if you don't believe the second clamp idea is extremely valid.

Took my Tacoma in for a RnR C.V. axle, have no idea what happened but afterwards the front axle locked up in 4 WD..SURPRISINGLY the shop took full responsibility and ended up putting a new front differential in it...I won't go back there but kudos for manning up to their costly mistake..

The cv internals are worn. Normally you will see pitting/grooves on the race or cv housing.

That's a good point Tim. I think around the 5:00 mark, Len is addressing it when he talks about dirt and debris in the outer joint. But I would have liked to have seen one that had gone bad and was clicking pulled apart to actually show the close up of what is causing it instead of seeing a new one in perfect condition.

Great carefully done closeups of tha joint - really never knew how complex it was …. The axels are one of the major costs I keep spending on my car- front axels keep lasting 45k every 4x yrs - I’ll neve have it done at Firestone nor mavis.
Companies don't fix cars, the technicians they employ all have names.
I believe also when these go up your tires will go bald as well ,inside tread will whare down and will cost you a new pair of tires,going through this process right at this moment,great vid.

Hi Thanks this really helped alot but seems I would need to replace my inner Cv j because the rings were falling off but the noise it's less, vibration gone and the steering handles well.
Aslong as I keep my revs between 2-3rpms its drivable

Unfortunately I watch this video too late, that just happened to me and I busted the axle boot putting too much pressure on it. Long story short don't do any repairs if you not sure enough. Great video !!!!
Right. I was working on removing the lower control arm on my vehicle and end it up disconnecting the joints just like on the video. Should have done the research before attempting the repair.

Thanks for the Video sir , on how the CV joint works, and what happens when the boots are torn.It s always the outer CV joint that gets defective after dirt ,water gets in it.Most front wheel drive cars have this problem.Manufactures want to save cost.If I have a choice , I will go for a Rear wheel car .

I fixed my CV boot just by re-greasing through the crack and then covering it entirely with RTV.
A year later...still running perfectly without any noises.
That method only works if you catch it before the bearings go out...and if you're like me and drive a cheap beater car

I changed my upper control arms, on both sides of course of my 2012 GMC Sierra and the axle did pop out on the driver side. I was able to twist and put it back in and the whole assembly seems to be turning ok now. Am I good you think or should I peel the boot out and check? I like how you demonstrated what those other clamps would do if used.

I had the same dreaded click on my 2002 Gwagon but in end it was the front short drive shaft from transmission to the transfer case. Pulled it out and insides of the U-joints on both ends were dried out.
What no my suz 2011 traverse shakes a lil also makes clunking noise when I go over bump. Got new stunts, from y'all by the way y'all are Awesome. It sounds to me that's my problem. I want to know if there are other symptoms.
Pro tip: add a second worm clamp on the shaft next to the boot and position the screw portion opposite on the one on the boot to correct the balance. You're welcome 😁
I normally love these guys, but did not answer the question of why a CV axle clicks.......seriously I wanted a specific answer, never saw one. But keep up the good work. If this was an assumption answer. I get it, I just wanted specifics is all, I have a open boot but it only clicks when i stop and start. Just wondering how long till i absolutely have to change it. I have the same noise like on this video. As I speed up, klicking is faster, and noise increases on gas release. In my case I can hear noise only above 60km/h till 130km/h. Did you have same issues with that car on video? Thank's 👍😊
Hi guy i noticed that one of my rear axle inner boot rubber closer to the diff was torn and most of the grease had come out, while i was putting back grease in it i saw pieces of the pin metals falling out. Does this mean my axle needs to be replaced? Thank you in advance.

If your boot is torn, you already have contaminants in the bearings.
Just replace the whole axel on the bad side. It's easier to replace and isn't really all that expensive.
Also: Find the ones with a lifetime guarantee.👍
On my car the rings around those needles in the inner joint bearings weren't stopped by any ring or such so they just all fell out. I later rebuilt the bearings but lost a couple, there is a gap of at most two needles in each of the bearings. They seem to spin normally and I haven't taken the car for a test run yet but I hope it won't cause too much of an issue...

the general public should watch some of these videos, and it will teach them a few things about why vehicles need maintenance, etc, instead of just jumping in the vehicle, driving it, and blaming the manufacturers when something goes wrong
I got somebody that came to My house late at night & took a razor blade to My outer boot. Both of the axles arent even a year old yet & it was put in at a mech shop so I know its pit back together correctly. Now I am in the process of waiting on boot, clamp & bearing grease to arrive so I can make a vodeo on how to rebuild it. But this video was very indepth & correct. How about making a cv axle rebuild where the 6 bearings are like Im fixing to do soon???

Great video, I got a question, I’ve just fit a lift kit front and back on my 4x4 and now when I’m turning hard right only when I’m coming to a stop I hear a loud clinking sound coming from under my driver side front guard and not sure if CV or wheel hub bearings?

I usually just machine my own cv axles out of recycled pop cans wrapped with gorilla tape around my custom cv joint.....
If you detect a tear in the outer boot early, just replace the boot and add some grease. With new tools, it is quite easy to replace the outer boots.
