How To Rebuild & Repair A CV Axle

- ►Broken CV joints and ripped CV joint boots are a universal issue for modern vehicles. The joints are on either end of an axle, allowing significant wheel articulation while ensuring it retains drive from the engine. The CV joints and the rubber boots that cover them are thus under constant movement and will eventually wear out. Replacing a CV axle can be expensive, but luckily, you don't have to. The boots and joints are rebuildable with a little time and patience, and we're here to show you how.
In today's Tech Tip, Danny Krugeer, FCP Euro's Mercedes Expert, shows you how to rebuild a CV axle.

Great video and this is not only a money saving technique, more importantly, it is a way to keep from throwing away working parts.
Eccellente. Just a pray for your videomaker: many of us are watching from foreign Countries and often need subtitles. Please consider it when filming and editing. Leave the space at the bottom, because especially on mobiles they overlap the items. Many thanks from Italy.😉
Dang - that was outstanding. Thank you
Bravo, bravo. Very good instruction!
Great quality video
Great video!! thank you.
Excellent video - while I did my Porsche CV axles with entire units, it's great to see how the the joints are rebuilt. Excellent level of detail.
Great video, but a key detail left out: on VW products where the inner axle bolts to a flange in the transmission, you're supposed to apply a thin bead of flange sealant to the end cap, and the inner boot flange, where the two accept bolts. Otherwise, you can have grease eject from this area, and leave you wondering why your new boots are leaking.
great video and got a thumbs up from me but get on with it!!!
NIce! One of the great DIY videos!
Thank you
why do you always hide the most important one in the spare parts detachment.? how to detach the elbows from the axle? a good video must be detailed and clear
Should put a wrap of masking tape over splines so as not to score the inside of the boot sealing surface, then apply a thin wipe of grease so boot small end slides on with ease!👍
On the outer I didn’t see when you reinstalled the new c clip. Did I miss something ? I’m assuming install new c clip after cleaning and removing joint ? And during installation I am hammering until the joint seats again ?
Thank you for the video. Why did you not install both boots when you removed the first cv joint ?
Can be
Cant wait for the ford!!,
I’m working on a 1996 lexus es300 and I ordered a gsp cv axle from rock auto and when I got it the ball bearings were out of place so I removed the snap ring and put the ball bearings in the cage and greased it however now it won’t rotate. Is there a trick to getting the ball bearings to stay in place in the cage and have them still rotate?
Thank you for the helpful video. Also you’re a brave man for messing with spring clips without eye pro. I’m a chicken with spring pressure and have fallen victim to a chipped tooth from an angry wheel bearing retainer 😂
Eye protection is a must with that unavoidable shot of brake clean in the face!
great video, how do i know if the cv joint passed the C clip? i cant see the clip and i didnt feel if it passed over or not
Take notes. Take photos, lots of them. Then basically eyeball it.
I want to try a cv build using Mobil 1 Synthetic grease. In my opinion that black moly grease sucks. What to i have to lose? Im going to experiment. I see way to many new OEM axles that fail just like any China made axle. Any thoughts?
How difficult would this be to do on an F30 without removing the axel from the diff, going to attempt that next week.
Hi Michael, the best way to do this is by removing the axle!
hey my 2020 kia optima has cv axle vibration you think rebuilding it will correct the problem
Hey there! It very likely will, if the issue is your CV Joint. Just double-check that your vibration isn't from something like a wheel bearing or bent wheel first!
Why are some CV axle inner c clips flat and others round will it make a difference if I put the wrong one in my car?????????????
I just checked your site, there is no CV axle rebuild kits for a 2013 Volvo XC70. Will these become available in the future?
We sure hope so!
I decided..to buy a new axel...shipped in 2 days..installed in 2 hours.
Can you do a Porsche 996 ish axil ? Outers are like ? WTF 👍🇦🇺
You want all of that grease packed into the bearing, forget the boot, must pack the bearing well, you should all know that!! Otherwise, good job! :)
What's the point of filling the boot with grease? Any excess sure but surely you want as much grease as possible on the actual cv joint?
it rotates + it moves up and down, the grease will stick on the wall of the plastic/rubber boot because of the speed, if you do not put enough grease, soon you will be hearing annoying noises
How do you get them out of the car?
This isn’t for you if that’s your question.
@@vert5 your probably right!
Had a light bearing sound passenger side. Shortly later it became a lour clunking, shortly later i bust down, 3 out of 6 lug nuts torn off. Replace lower arm/ball/rod end, new bearing, new hub, still clunking again! The sound is coming from near the rotor. Double checked brakes. Ok. This cv axle was replaced 1 year ago under a recall> I ordered a new cv axle made in China. (what do i have to lose)? Is my manual trans axle shot? I kinda dont think so but now im getting really scared. This is my only car. Its a little Honda FIT. PLEASE HELP ME.
Funnily enough, I actually also have a Honda fit. Make sure you check your motor mounts, as they do fail and can definitely add clunking.
As you seem aware, there is a recall open on our axles...if yours was already replaced, especially with a quality one, it should still be good though. I'd double check to make sure everything is tight with all of that work done, and also consider the mounts (US passenger side one is up on top and is hydraulic. US driver side there are two, and the torque or lower mount fails super commonly. When it does, you get a pop or clunk).
My motor mounts have been noisy since the day i drove it off the lot! The clunking as tire rotates is coming from the brake/rotor area. Checked it and double checked it. My new CV axle from Rock auto just got here today. Waiting for the rain to stop.@@danny_playswithcars
🎉 quality job and great explanation, learning
Glad you liked it!
Oh that nasty grease.
BULLSHYT! 2010 Tahoe that is not the same. Every vehicle disassembles differently...
Hai montato il giunto al contrario, con questo video fai fare danni ad altra gente!!
I see someone promoting a Melye product, I'll turn the video off. Cause they don't really know what they're talking about.
What's wrong with meyle? Please elaborate
I've been using Meyle products since 2018 without any issues, so what is your point?
None stop talking……………..
i wish all the mechanics do the same. most of them will just say, replace it
Where do you get the parts you replaced in this video?
Lol
