  • Another delayed update - sometimes life gets in the way of playing trains!
    I've finally managed to start the construction of the baseboards, this update shows that & also the AnyRail track plan in 2D & 3D.

    Hi Grant, nice to see you at the first stages of the build, I’m looking forward to seeing how it all develops. Life always gets in the way, I’m retired and I still never seem to get enough time to work on the railway!!!
    Cheers for now Grant, John

    Just great to see you posting videos again, brings back some memories. I started a layout two years ago after last having one in the 1970s, and got great enjoyment and inspiration watching your entire loft railway series, more or less all in one go. Looking forward to seeing how the garden summer house series goes.

    Nice to see a local lad balding a model railway (I live in Fulwell - 54A kind of gives it away) and I work at Sunderland Station Models so if you fancy popping in for a chat sometime I usually work Tues/Wed/Thursdays.

    It’s crazy to see you having to start all over again. It looks good though!

    i'm impressed by your energy - first the attic conversion and now the garden room layout. i'm in my 70's and i had half an eye on one of our children's bedrooms but they want their rooms kept as they remember them plus they come back every now and then ha-ha so, in the end, i resorted to n scale as i could move the board when i had to get out of the way without leaving too much evidence of trespassing.

      TBH Ian one of the reasons its taken so long to get even this far is because i come in from work & i'm knackered! My two are in their twenties now & still at home, so it was either the loft again or build the summer house!

    Hi Grant - Great to see you back mate.
    The unit on the wall above the worktop, is it just a heater and is there more of it on the outside of the garden room?
    Just love what you have done so far. Looking forward to the build after following you on the loft build. Think I might watch that again.
    I can truly understand how life and work get in the way, but it is after all a hobby and we take out time with hobbies.
    Regards Chris

      Hi Chris, the unit is a heater & a/c unit, it can get very hot in there in summer so i thought it was a worthwhile expense. the compressor part is out the back of the summer house. regards, Grant

    Great to see you back and making progress. I kept my subscription active from when you moved, hoping you would eventually return. I enjoyed the first series very much. Where do you find the money - it’s a very expensive hobby.

    • @GrantWilliamsRailway
      @GrantWilliamsRailway  Před 9 měsíci

      Thanks Graham. It is indeed very expensive, i worry about younger generations coming through. It's only since middle age that i've had more disposable income to spend on the hobby but we've spent so much on the house move i've got to be a bit more frugal with the railway. regards, Grant.

      You mentioned buying stuff from eBay and Curaskill. I don’t know it and a Google search didn’t find anything relevant. Perhaps I’ve misspelled Curaskill. Please clarify. Thanks.

    Hi Grant, Nice update, good to see you making some progress. Track plan looks pretty good. Quick question, have you ever thought about running the helix in the other direction? So on the scenic section it'd run upto that far wall. Yes you would lose a little bit of storage sidings but you'd gain like 3-4ft of scenic section and open up the entrance to the station on that right hand side and you could always model a village/town scene on abit of light insulation board to sit over the top of the helix as something else to model which would be light and easy to remove. Cheers, Michael

    • @GrantWilliamsRailway
      @GrantWilliamsRailway  Před 9 měsíci

      Hi Michael, thanks for the comment. I did actually want to run it that way, however this would mean trains running up to the station would be on the inside of the helix so they'd have a greater gradient added to the extra friction of a tighter radius. As i can't remember the difference in gradient between the two plans I may revisit this before i move any further - just to remind myself what it was. I mostly run modern image & i know they're much more effective than steam on gradients so it may not be too bad! Decisions, decisions!! Regards, Grant.

    When you mark out the helix sections, I am guessing that they are not true circles, as when they rise up, the ends which are initially matching, will separate and the ends will not exactly butt together. Perhaps your CAD tool allows you to produce a paper template (although a large printer would be required).

      You're right but an exact join isn't a problem as long as the joins are braced. I couldn't actually find anywhere that could print a plan big enough within reasonable cost.

    Hi Grant. Both helixes and helices are correct. I have just updated to AnyRail version 6.53.0 and chosen the 3D view. How do you get it to show the train driver's POV moving around the track?

    • @GrantWilliamsRailway
      @GrantWilliamsRailway  Před 9 měsíci

      Hi Paul thanks for the comment. To get a drivers POV click the 3D view button then click the FPS camera, its the one that faces out of the screen! The mouse moves the camera left & right & the cursor keys move perspective in & out, so with combinations of both its possible to 'drive' around the track. Hope that helps!

      @PaulSmith-pl7fo Před 9 měsíci

      @@GrantWilliamsRailway Hi Grant. Thanks for your reply. I have followed the steps you outlined and do get the image to move around, but not in the way you did to get the driver's POV!
