A Model Railway From Scratch - 25: A Long Overdue Update!

  • It's been a very long time since my last update but i have been doing train stuff - mainly running them & buying more loco's.
    Hopefully this update will explain where I am at the moment & what I'm going to do next. It also admits to a mistake I made with the last update that only Mike Hawkins spotted!
    There's a couple of new channels I've subscribed to & they're worth checking out as they're people embarking on new layouts - which I love to watch.:

    All of this is going to be a fantastic addition to what is already a fantastic layout. I love the way the good line is in the figure of eight already, that on its on adds so much more interest to the layout - like you say, does not seem that the train is just going around and around. But now you are going to add a reversing loop to it its going to be twice as interesting! A really great idea in my opinion. And of course the fiddle yard is simply going to make life so much easier, rather than lifting trains on and off the track all the time. Yes, you have set yourself a task, but its going to be 100% worth the effort. Hope it all goes really well. Now you just need to hope that the wife does not decide she wants to move house any time soon!

    Hi Grant, great to have you back and you’ve hit the ground running! What a lot of work you’ve given yourself but it’ll be worth it in the long run. Like you, I didn’t factor in a fiddle yard when doing my initial plans and my solution regrettably doesn’t allow for returning loops either but we work with what we’ve got. Looking forward to more from you in the coming months. Paul

      Grant Williams thank you. I’d give it a go with the scratch build. It was one of the reasons I started it, to show how straight forward it is. Once you get the knack it’s hard to go back to kit built or RTR structures. Paul

    Great to have an update
    Watching trains go round is fIr way to spend your time
    Ticks my boxes too.
    I have to say that a TMD is a great place to store locos too.... the guilty pleasure of collecting....
    Good luck on the storage yard and the contorsion -

    The big problem I see with your storage yard plan, apart from all the re work required, is you're not going to see which track is empty and each train is stabled on. That's going to make it very hard for you to throw the right points to get the train into an empty line and also out onto your reversing curve. Any de railment you get under there is going to be a real ballache to get at and see.

    Hi Grant can I make 2 suggestions....
    1. Build the storage area and test THEN raise it and fix in place. Suggest toggles on the supports that can be simply twisted to lock / release this board. May be useful for maintenance too. The feed route would of course need to take account of this.
    2. If you can join your reversing loop back onto itself BEFORE the throat of your fiddle yard, all trains can be turned before parking.
    Just some ideas. Hope it all goes well

      @@GrantWilliamsRailway it's my pleasure. But since writing that I feel it's even more important to suggest a board able to be dropped out....track cleaning alone would be a nightmare. I really do feel a little time now making it moveable would pay off in the long run. Best regards, Gary

  • @TrainzLuvr
    @TrainzLuvr Před 5 lety

    Hi Grant, before you start building I'd like to tag onto gs425's suggestion below about your reversing loop. Matter a fact, instead of connecting it to before the throat of your Storage yard, double track it and run it all the way down to the turnouts at the bottom (Branch/Goods line junction). By the way, currently you are "fouling" your Branch line so trains cannot run uninterrupted there while others are coming/going into the Storage. I believe the connections there should be double tracked - connecting off of your Goods line without interrupting flow on the Branch line.
    Anyway, back to the Storage yard portion, one track would run to your Storage yard left throat while the other track all the way around to the reversing loop and entering the Storage yard right throat. Basically, you could have two trains run independently in/out of storage (though congestion is still at the Branch line junction) plus your center track in the Storage could hold your longest train and not need to be kept empty for pass-thru, which is a bonus!
    Lastly, I suggest you try and drop those 3-way turnouts and instead use curved turnouts to build your the throats of your Storage yard. This could let you extend the length of all tracks in the yard, while avoiding potential reliability problems with 3-way turnouts, especially because you will not have easy access to that track once it is in place. Hope some of this helps and keep us updated!

    A very ambitious project indeed. I take my hat off to you sir! And it is your first layout I believe?
    With such a large layout do you, at times, get overwhelmed by how much work you have created for yourself?

    • @GrantWilliamsRailway
      @GrantWilliamsRailway  Před 5 lety

      Hi, thanks fo rthe comment. It is indeed my first large layout, (haven't done anything since i was about 15).
      I have created a lot of work for myself & laying the track has been a massive chore at times, it's he lack of space in a loft. Lack of headroom, lack of space underneath & in the corners & the constant need to move things around to get access to parts of the layout. The garage would probably have been bettter! Regards, Grant.

    Great to see you back!! Regarding your branch line, I think you should complete your scenery of the station when you have completed the installation of your storage tracks, and only then install the branch line. The reasoning behind this is two fold, firstly its an issue of reach... the branch line may just get slightly in the way when you are trying to work all the way back to the rear. Secondly it gives you a break from scenery once you have done that and you can do some track laying before continuing on to scenery. Crap essay complete! I hope this all makes sense :-)

    • @GrantWilliamsRailway
      @GrantWilliamsRailway  Před 5 lety

      Thanks for the comment, they're always much appreciated. You have a very valid point, there are places on the layout that are already becoming difficult to reach. At the moment i'm 50/50 about abondoning the branch line altogether. Reagrds Grant.

    • @Randhart
      @Randhart Před 5 lety

      Grant Williams oooo don’t abandon it just delay it 😉

    Good stuff. Glad to see your still at it. Lesson learned. Bottom to top. The turnaround radius is huge. Is that due to a loco or is it visible? Wondering why you would select such a big radius for below the layout when it doesn’t seem athletically needed.

      @GrantWilliamsRailway  Před 5 lety

      It doesn't need to be that big as you say, hopefully i'll explain in my next update. Regards Grant.

    Hi Grant I have a similar problem as you will have in building a fiddle yard under the main layout however I have a suggestion with you having 10 tracks as mine will why don't you build it on its side Hinge it on the wall side when the track and points are complete all you have to do Is lift to the horizontal and bolt to uprights Just a thought Regards Martin Coalbridge Junction

  • @Cowboy-in-a-Pink-Stetson

    Hello Grant, just discoverd your videos via Charlie Bishop's channel. Great work. Thank you.
    Just a small question.... For your storage tracks, would it not be better to make a 'HARP' rather than the 'FUNNEL' configuration you have? That way most of the staging tracks would have the same, longer length.
    Also, and please don't think I'm negativley criticising, on your previous video where you soldered the "stay-alive" into the bubble car, would it not have been easier to take the DCC chip out of the model, done the soldering work and then replaced it?
    thanks a gain for your good videos.
    greetings from Germany
