    You have the makings of a great layout Grant, but I'm afraid it's all too complicated and technical for me to understand. But I am eager to follow your progress. One thing I do envy is the amount of space you have compared to my humble shed, where I am building Tram Junction. My aim is to get as much track in as I can, but keep it simple for the two separate modes of transport, trains and trams. You could say it's a smaller set up to Grahams Lakeside, with the addition of a tramway. Anyway Grant I wish you well with what you have got planed, like I say it's going to be a fantastic layout, with lots going on and I look forward to your next update.
    Kindest regards
    Geoff

      Thanks Geoff. I'm looking forward to seeing your trams integrated into your layout, it's going to be great. Graham has a great layout & i'd love a space like that to work in. Regards Grant.

      Your layout is great Rob, You should perhaps do a top 10 of your favourite loco's.

    An interesting video, your plans look quite ambitious and complex especially as you are relatively new to the hobby, block detection is something that I looked at briefly but it seems like a lot of extra work (and money) if I only intend running two or maybe three trains at any one time. I have been collecting for over four years and am currently converting my attic which will hopefully be finished by the summer and will give me a 25ft by 12ft layout with no obstructions. With 24 locos, over 200 wagons, 125 yards of track, turnouts, loads of buildings, vehicles and scenic material my wife might not see me for a few years once I can get started actually building my layout (and might kill me if she ever finds out how much I’ve spent to date.

      Thanks Andy. Yes, i definitely got carried away with the track plan. Sounds like you have the makings of a fab layout, make sure to video it as you go.

    Take 3 2x4 of epual length and form tjem3in a triangle. Secure rhe to tje studs behind the drywall at tje proper hight and thay will support your layout and give you unrestricted access to the storage area.

    Great update finally caught up with your update videos, ive tried to use anyrail with issues of trying to get the plan to fit so i could print it off, im at the same stage as yourself with fitting a fiddle yard as the same it will be underneath the layout but not sure on the elevation up and down but may have to do a fiddle yard behind a scenic section maybe, look forward to you next update cheers Beeton Hough Junction (Dave C)

      Thanks Dave, i've subbed to your channel. AnyRail is good for calculating gradients but in my experience it's been difficult to transfer the plans from paper to reality!

      @@GrantWilliamsRailway Hi Grant thank you did see the notification, there will be an update video going out either saturday evening or sunday depending on how i get on with the boards on the other side of the layout, yea i struggerled with it all just on a flat surface so just layed track down loose to see if the plan will fit and it does so cant complain there and have also workout a slight way for the fiddle yard cheers Beeton Hough Junction (Dave C)

    With regard to the harp idea for the storage tracks, could you not re-arrange the harp to have the both the entrance to the storage track area and the exit to the reversing loop next to the wall?
    The track nearest the wall would be the through line, the second track would be for the high speed train, and subsequent lines would be of decreasing track lengths suitable for differing train sizes. There would be no need for three way points, just normal points.

    Nice update and credit to DCC Concepts for the assistance they gave. If all trains go out of the storage lines in the same direction, how will you get bi-directional running on your main lines?? or am i missing something.

    • @GrantWilliamsRailway
      @GrantWilliamsRailway  Před 5 lety +1

      No, you're correct in your assumption. I'll only be able to turn trains that are running on the "up" mainline by running them into the reversing loop, they will then be able top get back onto the mainline "down" line, the loco will be running forward the whole time. However, if i want to do it the other way, i.e. get from the "down" to the "up" i'll have to run the train backwards into the reverse loop. Regards, Grant.

  • @bobfuller
    @bobfuller Před 5 lety

    Not sure if you mentioned it in another video, but have you included a polarity switch in your reversing loop to prevent a short circuit when the train returns to the input of the yard?

    like to see you are going with train controller silver ,me too ,my controller will be digikeijs ,I've got four lines and one branch so five but all five will have separate feeds/boosters and a large fiddle yard 18 lines ,as you have quite a large layout it might be worth having a separate bus for your main lines and branch line and maybe fiddle yard
    ps like the thinking outside the box re: chain holding up your layout
    regards tony

      @GrantWilliamsRailway  Před 5 lety

      Thanks Tony. i must admit i haven't considered running separate busses for different sections, i can see it being worthwhile on large layouts but i didn't think mine was particularly large. Regards Grant.

    Hi Grant. Too bad on the lack of space for the double approach track to the storage - at least you've thought about it as well. I know the timing is never good and this post may find you too late, though I have a few comments again.
    First, more of a remark that another option was to build custom turnouts for your storage yard (or elsewhere). It's really not that hard - I've made 5 for mine (see trainsluvr.com/2019/03/custom-turnouts-for-the-staging/) and this is my first time doing so. Something to consider going forward, and you don't need all the fancy tools either. Custom trackwork offers immense benefits, especially when the space is tight.
    Regarding your outside track in the storage yard (the one to your reversing loop), looking at your latest video and your benchwork that track is awfully close to the edge. Have you considered the clearance needed for the locos and cars to pass by the two legs that you will need to put back on (legs which hold the upper decks)? To me, it appears that some wider cars might brush against the legs and cause derailments. Trains wobble as they go, and one of them leaning into the leg just might catch it. Move the legs an inch or more outwards, or move the track in a bit, just to be on the safe side. :)
    Finally, about possible derailments in your yard...you do not mention including any rerailers in the trackwork. I am not sure whether that's a practice there, but here across the pond we tend to put them after yard ladders, or any other place that could lead to a derailment. In your case specifically, the accessibility in the storage yard will be very height restricted. Even if you've done laying the track, it would be worth ripping it up to add rerailers to avoid nightmare scenarios in the future. You can see what I've done in my staging yard (see trainsluvr.com/2019/03/building-the-main-staging-yard-part-4/), and the amount of rerailers in place. I have 24 altogether on the entire staging deck between 3 yards and main line trackage. I too plan to automate my railroad, and once the upper decks go over the staging, it will become harder to access those areas.
    Hope this helps and looking forward to more updates!

      Thanks for your detailed comments, always appreciated!
      I don't have the confidence to build my own track & i actually think doing that is more popular over your side of the water as i barely know any layouts here with handbuilt track, the results are generally excellent however.
      i have taken into account the swing of long coaches into the storage area so they "shouldn't" catch on the wall or legs but i've measured wrong before...!
      Your layout is looking great, I'm always jealous of the space you have in the US.
      Regards Grant.

    • @TrainzLuvr
      @TrainzLuvr Před 5 lety

      You are progressing quite well, and pretty fast! If I wasn't building my own layout with little time I have available, I would've built you some custom turnouts to ease your pains with tight space under your benchwork because I *know* how it feels. Believe it or not, I consider my space tight. At 12 ft. room depth, having a peninsula in the middle of the room only allows for most sharpest curves (24-26") in those two aisles. I wish I had just a bit more space... :)
      By the way, I'm in Canada. We do have some OO modelers here as well, although I haven't seen any of their layouts in person. They are probably larger than the largest layouts over there. It's "go big or go home" in North America.

    • @GrantWilliamsRailway
      @GrantWilliamsRailway  Před 5 lety

      @@TrainzLuvr Many apologies regarding Canada/US, i would imagine that could get quite annoying! I notice on your website you link to Stephen Bennett, his layout is superb & SO MUCH SPACE!!!
      Rob McCrain's Farland Howe is a US based OO layout, once again in a large train room.
