  • So after a few months settling into our new house I decided to start building a new home for a new layout & so in August, I started construction of a Garden Room/Summer House. This video shows the progress so far.
    I learned a lot from the CZcams channels below, they''re a fantastic resource for building your own Garden Room & they gave me the confidence to have a go at building my own.
    Ali Dymock: An excellent set of videos with very detailed explanations of all aspects of construction, from planning to finishing of your Garden Room: / alidymock
    Oakwood Garden Rooms: A great resource showcasing some of the many Garden Rooms Liam & his team have built, with lots of helpful advice & tips & tricks for overcoming problems. / @thegardenroomguru

    Hi Grant, good to see you back on the Tube ! That is one impressive shed & looks like a decent size for a large layout ! I'll be following the progress and look forward to the new layout plans, all the best....................Andy

    Hi Grant - Great news that the Railway Room is up and I am looking forward to seeing it come to life and excellent idea in putting a train watching window in .
    Cheers Kev

    Nice to see you get started again. I hope you can record when you start adding your ESU Railcom block detectors and configure on the ECoS.

    Hello Grant I've been wondering where my fellow Geordie (or maybe Makem?) railway modeller had got to and wow what you're up to looks splendid.
    An Azumer at the bottom of the garden (I'm still waiting for mine from Hornby) doesn't get any better then that, it certainly beats the Metro.
    I'm looking forward to see the next thrilling instalment, Bill from Gateshead.

    Hi Grant, great to see you back on the Tube, that’s going to be a fabulous new room for you and an added bonus of a railway right next door! I’m just a little bit jealous. Paul

  • @DarlingbroughModelRailway

    Hi Grant! Welcome back! After watching your progress in your previous loft, I admit seeing you dismantle it all was disheartening...😭 However I am glad to see your progress in the summer house! It's nice to see how a "shed layout" is SUPPOSED to be built, rather than bodged together like I have! 😂🤣
    Are you planning your new layout to be similar to your old one? Or is it too soon to tell? 🤔

  • @flinthillsmodelrailway

    hi Grant , Have just built our Garden room this Year ( based on the ideas from Oakwood) and have enlarged the pond as well to match . fingers crossed I can now get back to Modelling the railway . Looking forward to seeing yours completed

    Hi Grant.
    Can you explain how you got from small metal rods in concrete to the joists please? Looking good mate. A tip from me (and copied from cheekytek)...
    Put the railway at 4ft high. This means you can still have space for a bench underneath, plenty of storage, and also a sofa so the mrs can chill and watch a bit of tv whilst you play trains. ... cheers. Gary

      @GrantWilliamsRailway  Před 2 lety

      Thanks Gary. The railway will certianly be a good working height, my back was done in with the last one! Regards, Grant.

      Sorry Gary, forgot to answer the first part of your question! This video from Oakwood Garden Rooms show how the system works: czcams.com/video/iOdQC2omeR0/video.html

      @@GrantWilliamsRailway thanks Grant I'll have a look at that. I built my man cave with all creature comforts, including full insulation, a log burner, oak flooring, tv on wall , and sofa under the slimmer section of railway. This meant it's more inviting to non railway guests inc girlfriend, so I'm not stuck out there on my own ! Everyone likes sitting by the crackling fire.

    • @GrantWilliamsRailway

      @@gs425 A log burner sounds like a great idea!

    • @gs425
      @gs425 Před 2 lety +1

      @@GrantWilliamsRailway because it's a garden room you can install it yourself. Just get a tiny cute one, double skimmed flue to take straight out through the wall then leaves enough clearance to run the double track over the top if you have boards at 4ft like me.

  • @fircombehallrailwayoogauge1430

    Great to have you back Grant. Oh dear, I have a similar sized chalet in my back garden .............. you may have started a small domestic!
    Have you considered putting roof lights / windows in the roof? You have a great deal of experience from your previous model and I would not wish to show my grandmother how to suck eggs bur consider the design of the baseboards carefully. If they can be lifted it makes fitting point motors and wiring so much easier. Just my initial thoughts Grant. Very excited to follow your build!

    • @GrantWilliamsRailway
      @GrantWilliamsRailway  Před 2 lety +1

      Thanks for the commnet. After having a loft based layout last time i'm keen to avoid low baseboards, my back won't stand for it, so it'll be either high boards or hinges for lifting! Cheers!

    Hi Grant - Really glad to see this video mate and that your cracking on with stuff. Wow that train room looks fantastic, love the window at the back.
    I am guessing it is just going to be a model railway room, if so its huge. Be interested to know roughly what it all cost as your doing it yourself.
    Have to say you have done an excellent job and I cannot wait for you show us your plans and start building your worktops
    How big will it actually be inside when its finished?
    Regards Chris

    • @GrantWilliamsRailway
      @GrantWilliamsRailway  Před 2 lety

      Thanks Chris. I don't actually know the internal size yet, i havent got around to measuring it since the walls went up! The room is intended as a railway room however it has to be able to be converted back to a usuable space, such as a gym or home office, in case we move - although that isnt on the cards anytime soon!! since i started to plan it the price of raw materials has sky rocketed, adding quite a bit to the cost, i may do a video on the finished room at a later date which will include costings. Regards Grant.

      Hi Chris, thanks for the comment, much appreciated! It is finished, but only recently. i havent done anything with the interior yet as its going to be much more of a multifunctional space - so i have to work out whats going where. i do intend to do more updates, not least because i've still been acquiring stock & i'd like to go through that at some point. Regards Grant

    Looks like you know what you are doing! I think I may have to create a shed for my future plans of layout so the links below are very useful. How much has it cost so far, if you don't mind me asking?

    • @GrantWilliamsRailway
      @GrantWilliamsRailway  Před 2 lety +1

      It's cost more than the original plan, mostly due to the worlwide shortage of materials thats happening at the moment! i'll probbaly do a video at the end, when it's all done, which will inlcude costings. Regards, Grant.
