  • After a lot of investigation, I found out what was causing my ECoS to constantly short-out. Many many thanks to everyone that offered suggestions - there were some great ideas.
    The explanation of finding & fixing the problem is very dry, however stick it out or fast forward to about ten minutes to see some track-can footage with a bit of a difference.

    We stand on the shoulders of others! Really pleased you found the problem, I could tell by your voice you were very downhearted! Can't wait to see how you panned the camera! Very pleased for you Grant.

  • @piccadillymodelrailways

    Phew, what a job!! I am soo glad you got to the bottom of it. Cutting the bus wire into sections was an excellent suggestion. Now you are back up and running that must have been a huge relief and put a smile back on your face.

    Hi Grant..... you must have been so frustrated trying to find that fault. I bet you had an extra piece of cake with your coffee to celebrate when you found out what was wrong. 🤣
    Thanks very much for the sub....

    A great update and great news about fixing the short. Really enjoyed the track cam. They really give a whole new perspective on the layout. I need to get on this myself and record a few at that level. Lovely smooth slow speed as well. Clint

    us electricians use the half cut method, its often the only way to pinpoint faults, some of us are often half cut anyways !! great vids mate.

    Congrats on sorting out the electrical problem! I know how frustrating they can be, but at least you got it done!
    Really love how you’ve done the track cam!
    Would love to see a video of the entire layout so far from that point of view!

    Phew finally caught up !! Glad you solved the short problem and DCC is not just 2 wire plug & play as advertised . I wil be interested how you get on with the Colbalt Surface points as I was thinking using them on a separate DC bus with the Alpha control box. Looking forward to the next update - Cheers Kev

      @GrantWilliamsRailway  Před 5 lety

      Yes, it was a bit of a mare tracking down the fault, i still love DCC though, just for the sheer scale of what can be done with the format. I've been in a bit of a funk for a while now, lost my railway mojo i think! I have been watching lots, just not doing anything myself, hopefully will be getting back into it soon.

    Its great that you found the problem Cobalt I had mine fixed under warranty and the Tech here in Australia couldn't identify the cause so he replaced the circuit board and after installation on the layout it works fine

    It's all beyond me Grant with this DCC. As my layout is small compared to many others I subscribe to, analogue
    DC is simple and serves my purpose, but I am glad you have sorted out your problem. Nice camera views of some of your layout and good clear images too. Keep up the good work Grant, I'm always interested to see your progress.

    Hi Grant
    Good to see you've sorted the gremlin out. I had a similar problem with dud cobalt, very frustrating for me as it was intermittent so took an age to figure out.
    You'll be glad to hear if you send it to dcc concepts they'll repair it for you.
    Cheers Paul

    • @GrantWilliamsRailway
      @GrantWilliamsRailway  Před 5 lety +1

      Thanks Paul. I know dcc concepts are good with customer service, however. i'm a little concerned because, including you, i now know three people that have had their point motors fail, which doesn't seem like a good failure percentage!

    • @DungeWoodRailway
      @DungeWoodRailway Před 5 lety

      Hi Grant
      It certainly was a pain as I discounted it being a issue with the point because they were supposed to be bullet proof, which they clearly aren't. I believe mine didn't fail but was supplied with a fault.... It is quite worrying and I'm watching now for any signs another is acting up.
      Dcconcepts were great though and I soon got the point back.
      Cheers Paul

    Hi Grant. Glad you found the fault. I really liked your 'head cam' videos. I noticed in the 2nd one that your track was bowed down in the centre (where the track pins went?)
    I always put my pins or screws at the outer edges of the track, and I don't get this problem.

    • @GrantWilliamsRailway
      @GrantWilliamsRailway  Před 3 lety

      Hi Roger. Thanks for the comments, much appreciated. I've noticed this too & it's because i use sundeala, which is a very soft material & easy to deform, & then i always over-drive the pins, pushing them in very hard when its unnecessary. I may try your suggestion on my new layout or just use glue! Regards, Grant.

      Thanks Keith. the deltic sounds amazing, it has incredible depth for a model & it's so loud i had to turn it down when editing the video! The sound is by legomanbiffo using a super sound speaker, all from DC Kits.

    Well done on finding the fault, it’s always something simple, the only hard bit is finding it but, at least you now have the satisfaction of having traced and rectified the fault. I have 48 Cobalt motors to fit when I actually get my layout started but I’m pretty sure your faulty one will be one of the very rare instances where they they have developed a fault. I doubt if the manufacturer would give them a genuine lifetime guarantee unless they were absolutely sure about the quality. What camera were you using on the layout? It’s something that I quite fancy trying myself and it might even be useful for track inspection in tunnels.

    • @GrantWilliamsRailway

      Thanks Andy. I really like the dcc concepts point motors but i now know three people (including me) who have had this problem so i'm concerned that it might happen again!
