But after penalty facial expressions can tell everything
You know it's cold outside when you go outside and it's cold

On the methodology of your study: the researchers who selected the clips should never have had access to whether the kick was a goal or a miss. You stated that you selected clips based on whether or not the player's face was visible from the front. If we assume this is a valid criterion, which seems plausible, then the researchers who searched for and selected valid clips should have only looked at that criterion. Therefore, your sample clips had selection bias.
Next, you seem to have collected measurements from the worst possible group of people in the worst possible way. 1. You almost certainly should have only shown the clips to people who don't watch football.
2. You shouldn't have asked the participants to rate the likelihood of a goal. Your hypothesis is that the emotional state or the apparently display of an emotional state influences the outcome of the penalty kick. Therefore, you should have had participants measure the perceived emotional state of the player.
3. You should have included clips of people that have already been proven by other studies to represent the emotional states you are trying to measure. A. This creates a normalized ratting to which you can compare the ratings of the players. B. It helps to obfuscate that you are measuring penalty kicks or football. C. If your study's measurements of the established clips match the expected values for those clips, it suggests that you conducted your study using a valid procedure.
4. You should have had the participants rate other factors that could influence their rating of the perceived emotional state. If you were measuring an emotional state that was already established in the literature, then the literature would also tell you what factors you must control for. I couldn't figure out what emotional state you were trying to measure, so I don't know which factors you should have controlled for. However, in nearly every study in which the participants can see the face of the person they are rating, the physical attractiveness of the person (regardless of either person's gender) has a profound effect on whatever the researchers are measuring. In your study, it is nearly certain that players who are objectively more attractive will be disproportionately rated by participants as having the more desirable emotional state. Assuming this is true, the participants needed to also rate the attractiveness of the person in the clip. Then your statistician would A. normalize the ratings of the participant (singular), B. aggregate the normalized ratings, C. (possibly) normalize the aggregated ratings, and D. adjust the ratings of perceived emotional state with the aggregate rating of physical attractiveness to remove that bias.
5. Your video implies that you showed color videos to the participants, but you almost certainly should have used grayscale videos because color has been conclusively established to effect outcomes in sport and participant ratings of many things, such as emotional state.
6. Your participants were all self selected, and you didn't tell us that you culled the participants to create a representative sample. Cross-cultural is usually expensive, but gender, age, and education are achievable-and necessary.

There's a lot more. And, I painted with broad strokes, but all of these issues are affected by small changes.
I am intrigued by your hypothesis, and I would love to see it treated. But this study certainly did not tell us anything useful.
Great commentary. The video idea is interesting, but the study is really poorly designed. That's why science is hard to do and in special about psychology and behavior.
Excellent points.
I think that this comment misses the biggest confounding factor: Participants knew who was taking the penalty. Players that they recognized as excellent strikers or penalty takers would surely be rated as more likely to score, and are actually more likely to score. In the first clip in this video, I guessed the penalty would be scored solely because Messi was taking it. The participants of the study likely could have a similar strategy.
@@masonshurman3703 Or they might be unaware they have seen the penalty before.
@@masonshurman3703 the best thing would've been to show it to people unfamiliar with football or at least the Bundesliga.

Welcome aboard!
This video has so many points that connect with me...we learned about Watzlawick (and the four sides model by Schulz von Thun) at university and I have watched all the TV shows that were shown in the video :D. The editing is amazing as well as usual. I am sure you guys did a lot of power-posing before posting this one :D.
Thank you! We know the topic is kind of special interest and the video probably won't go viral, but we thought it's fun and wanted to do it anyway. So your feedback means a lot!

Is it to make sure he either A. Hits the wall. B. Hit the wall?
Im sorry but most football fans know Lewandowski and know that he is very good at taking penalties (one of the highest conversion rates out there) so of course they would (rightly) guess that he will most likely convert the penalty. You would have to show videos of players most people have never seen before (from some obscure league) or, alternatively, show videos of Bundesliga penalties to people who are 100% disinterested in football and dont even know who Messi or Ronaldo are.
At 0:54, the voice said LeBron or Ronaldo, but the captions were Messi or Ronaldo
How did you ensure that people voting did not firstly check the penalty result by googling it or even finding the corresponding video ? Great channel deserving million of subs
The power pose increasing testosterone has failed to replicate and is now understood to be untrue. Also removing the 0 and 100 scores is not a valid way to control for people previously seeing the clip and that's just the tip of the confound iceberg for the "scientific" study. This is not the quality I expect from this channel.
Yes, it makes me wonder how much of other videos are done with such poor factchecking and knowledge.

A good keeper will rarely look at facial expression. He knows the kicker is trying to fool him. Most keepers will guess left or right and have to commit quickly.

To guess a penalty you should just look at the foot position.
For a right foot player: If the foot is close to the ball they're most likely to shoot right, and reversed. Players will try to trick you, but the shot will feel awkward.
why didn't you ask up to participate to the study !

Messis Face say! I will make it God helps me, but it is a bad penalty...
Goal is Goal!
Why would you take 100 penalties from wich 69 are goals and 31 are missed? I think you should have taken 50 goals and 50 missed then the propabilty for someone who took your servey to guess the result of a penalty would be 50 percent, so your servey would have a point.
Because on average around 70% of penalties are goals :). But you can make an argument for both, doing 50/50 or trying to represent the reality with 70/30.
Thank you for explaining almost nothing why ronaldo takes a pen like that
PrĂĄcticamente lo explicĂł por la pose de poder.
Iâm taking stats in school and your experiment is a bit flawed. There are many confounding variables such as if the person has already watched that particular penallty or if they googled it. The other thing about this experiment is that it is voluntary response meaning that those who knew about the study would respond. This would therefore favor those who watch a lot of football to do the test. I like the idea but I think you guys know that you can create a better experiment.
FĂĄcil si eres de UK o EEUU entonces no ven la Bundesliga. AsĂ que es poco probable que hayan visto la Bundesliga. La mayorĂa de personas no pasa de la Premier o RM vs Barcelona.
Great study however in the short term, ie power poses right before a penalty, might boost testosterone levels but will not have an impact on the performance in that moment. Testosterone is a steroid and acts to increase genetic expression in the long run - over days, weeks, or months. So power posing everyday in the morning might be a good idea if you want better performance!
