      exclusive licensing should never had happened. its so obvious that the overwhelming majority of consumers would go to where they can play the same club they support. Konami never had the money to compete with EA for licenses. now EA has a monopoly on a lot of sports games just because they have the money for exclusive licenses, and because of that they have no competition and with no competition means they barely improve the game each year.
      Look at MLB, EA doesn't have the license for that sport so they themselves don't bother making a competitor because they know they can't compete without the license.

    Part of the reason the FIFA was asking for so much money was because EA is making an insane amount of money JUST from Ultimate Team. They were pulling in $650M from it over 5 years ago and it's just constantly gone up and up. For FY2021, EA made $1.62BILLION just from FIFA Ultimate Team microtransactions. And every year they push toward more and more of this cash cow, especially behind sponsored streamers (who are basically just paid hype men), and a business model and system design that steers people more toward needing to spend money to get more players that they can flip into better player squad challenges. And all this while some of their seriously great design options just get left to be "updated" like once every 5 years, which often means removing elements that fans liked, then putting them back in years later and calling them "new". The absolute bastardization that the career modes underwent in the last 10-15 years is saddening, but gotta make sure to have the big money FC Points packs available just months into the game! (And let's not forget that they intentionally make sure that the Points costs for packs and the amounts you can get from buying Points NEVER MATCH UP, just to elicit feelings that the added Points are just being wasted and therefore pushing people to spend on ANOTHER top-up of that virtual wallet, since "Well, it's not as much since I've already got some points in there..."
    FIFA is a hideous corrupt organization. EA are a hive of greedy manipulative bastards. Unfortunately, they both end up putting out good products, which sucks. But EA just keeps looking worse and worse to me every year.

      NBA Live is a good example of how they depend on the exclusive license.

  • @MrReese
    @MrReese Před 2 měsíci +74

    One key factor that seems to be missing in the video is that EA did not renew the FIFA brand name licensing agreement because FIFA not only wanted a lot more money, they would also not give EA exclusive rights to the name for video games anymore. That was the real reason EA jumped ship.
    FIFA could have capitalized on EA not using the FIFA name anymore if they had a (very good) competitor game ready to go for fall 2023 when EAFC'24 was released, but FIFA has nothing of the sort, so their advantage is basically gone now.

    It's inaccurate to say that FIFA International Soccer had "no competitors" in 1993:
    Sensible Soccer was the most popular football series in the world in the early 1990s, especially on Amiga and IBM PC compatibles. Sensi also was released on the Sega Mega Drive (Genesis in the US and Canada), which was the most popular gaming platform for sports games during the 4th generation of game systems.
    It's also incorrect to say that FIFA International Soccer was the best selling game of the year:
    The best selling game of 1993 was Street Fighter II (~5m copies) and the best selling game of 1994 was Donkey Kong Country (~6m copies)
    FIFA International Soccer was only the best selling video game in the UK for a few months (Lemmings, for example, outsold FIFA International Soccer) and elsewhere the sales numbers were tepid as most of Europe were less likely to buy home console games in the early 1990s. It was common that European sales figures to be under 1 million for large releases for years. It wouldn't be until the 5th generation (Sony PlayStation, Nintendo 64, Sega Saturn) when mass adoption of home consoles were common throughout Europe.

    Another thing to consider is who can FIFA find that is willing to develop a game engine for them. Practically no major game developer has the tools to make a football game, so they'd have to start from scratch and that requires a lot of money. Usually if a brand wants to have a game developed under their name they'd be the ones putting down investment on the game engine and getting their money back through sales, and it won't be any different for FIFA especially since all they have is the World Cup and they are very specific in what they want the game to be.

      @1iri Před měsícem +12

      Exactly! I was thinking about the same thing. Is funny how in the video they are praising EA for reaching those exclusive deals, but what about monopoly?
      For example, Apple created a good product with the phone and apps store, and charging money for their own product they "invented" and created. And now Epic Games or European Union say it's a monopoly and you need to break it and let others use your product that you invented and invested money in it!
      EA with these "exclusive" deals is 10 times worse than Apple, they just buy or "bribe" everyone and lock everyone out, compared to Apple which they invested their money in development or research and created their own product, that now they are forced to "open it" to others.

    • @tiagogreeve685

      I'm no lawyer but I'm pretty sure it's because fifa is purely for entertainment, so a monopoly is not as hurtful to people. Meanwhile phones are actual utility items that people use in their evreday lives, as a result a monopoly will be much more damaging.
      If FIFA becomes shit or too expensive because of monopoly, you can play plenty of other games. Meanwhile apple has made sure their product is absolutely necessary in lots of ways, proprietairy charger, linking of cloud services with phone, apple pay, etc. This is the way a monopoly hurts consumers

    PES was easily the best game, the game with more innovation too, FIFA only had the name.
    FIFA has not been good for over a decade.
    FIFA was well within their rights to ask for more money considering the game had grown and the value FIFA asked for was still negligible compared to the amount of money EA was making off it, if anyone was greedy in this situation, it was EA.
    Regardless, I welcome competition to not only EA but also 2K, big monopolies in their respective sports, both have been rotting for a decade, I can't even play their games anymore.

      You have a strange idea of how capitalism works. If you make a hugely successful business, and you're licensing my name - I don't get to just charge you whatever I like and you have to pay it. The price one sets for the name should reflect the value it gives. Otherwise that huge business will go its own way. A name is just a name. The true value is in the game itself.

    • @theavidgamer6213
      @theavidgamer6213 Před měsícem +1

      @@sockinvaders "A name is just a name" is a very naïve view. Many companies are still trusted by people simply for their name. FIFA (the organization) effectively gave EA a stamp of authenticity, which greatly helped EA grow the profile of FIFA (the game franchise). The truth is that those games were never really that good despite what nostalgic people say, and people really only bought them to play as their favorite teams or players. The mistake that FIFA (the organization) made was thinking that EA would never outgrow their need for the FIFA name (after all, if you already have the rights to all the team and player names, people can reasonably pretend that it's still a FIFA game). The franchise was built entirely off of appearances and not mechanics.

    It's weird that PES seems to be remembered as the more realistic game. I remember people saying that the high scoring games in PES were unrealistic. Either way, for me, PES was just more fun to play.

    I think after 10-12 years it will be a fun fact that 2 or 3 FIFAs weren't actually named FIFA

    A fundamental shift did happen in the mid-2000s, but you forgot to mention that it was also influenced by the overhaul in the FIFA series gameplay. The licenses were never enough, and I think that if those big changes in gameplay did not happen, PES would still have gotten the upper hand to this day.

    PES 2021 was the last best game Konami made.. this free to play on eFootball is trash, for offline guys like myself.. I want a league I can play in, I've never been big on EA's Fifa series and the last one I ever played was 2017 they just stopped looking at improving the game in itself.. licences and all I'm not a fan of the gameplay as much.. FIFA approaching a new developer would be interesting but if they do one can only hope that there's focus on firstly the gameplay.. I'm not bothered so much on the licensing.. it adds the realism to it, but I'm big on gameplay

    The networking and scaling effects of EA's exclusive licencing deals sound like they have been building a natural monopoly. Shouldn't the European comission investigate such market manipulating behaviour?

    With EA now saying FIFA were stopping them from developing the game to see what they change on future releases
