Great explanation, and cool video! I hope quite a few folks build this and enjoy the HECK out of them! I enjoyed the collaboration, thanks Nick for doing all the hard work!
Thanks Zarbo! I really loved doing this with you. I’m really happy we did this together! I’m couldn’t be happier with the results and the process. You are a true legend.
Что сказать, вы оба молодцы, приятно видеть подобное сотрудничество )
flat response sounds like shit, why you no use room curve? I have some if you need
Cool build! I’d love to hear them. I like the idea of full range sound in stereo, no separate subs.
Your videos have progressed so far since you've started. Keep up the good work!
I like the Epic speakers in the background along with the rule breaker in the center.
You have a great eye 😁
Owned a pair of PS 9's since the 90s and still love em. Awesome concept awesome video!
I remember when those original PS speakers came out. Nifty stuff. A friend of mine owned a pair. He probably still has them, LOL.
REW has a pretty nifty EQ feature that will give you all the DSP settings to convert a measured response into a target response. Took hours of time out of tuning my car audio system :-).
What does the off-axis response of those speakers look like though, let's say at 15 and 30 degrees? At my last attempt at tuning a speaker, I forgot about that. They measured flat on-axis, but off-axis a horrible peak around 3kHz reared its head. Back to the drawing board!
They actually are have a great phase relationship with it maintaining normal response off axis. I should have included that in the video. I’m working on making a diy spinorama so I can show that better.
@@Toid YEEEEEES! Spinorama's would be SO awesome, especially for your home theater speakers - at least for me a cornerstone of a speaker for my home theater is a very good off-axis response! Even more so than the actual spread in degrees, it has to be well behaved off axis! :D
I had a set of PS8a's and a PSLF when I was in high school. I can't fashion a reasonable review from so long ago but I do remember they were more impressive than the 901's at "Stereo Village" where I bought them from.
Absolutely brilliant 👍
Great summary. Right length.
I remember those (PS) . Super cool idea , especially when space is an issue. Now, speakers have a driver on the back or side.
Drivers and crossovers are far better now, especially when you can measure the output and dial them in.
Nice job
Any chance for you to do a in depth video of the programming in Sigma studio?
I actually own a pair of the PS 10 model that I purchased in 1984. Refoamed the 10" woofer surrounds 20 years ago, and just re-did the original 3 way x overs as the original caps had gone bad. Unfortunately the tweeters used a soft cloth "polymer" impregnated material where whatever they impregnated the cloth with has deteriorated, so the tweeters have a bad response.
This video is inspiring, and I may redo them again, or I may just find some soft domes that work with the rest
The original 10 model was an interesting design, it was a sealed box, and the mid driver was set in a sealed cardboard tube within the box, so almost like having a sealed box attached to a sealed box.
The bass and mids are still very punchy.
Awesome speakers 🔊 👏
These were sold in the 80s at least in Northern Virginia primarily at a store called Luskins. The PS10 was the one I wanted. Slightly larger.
I worked for Belmont TV and Stereo, we sold them as well. I have mostly working PS-10s, but the tweeters have degraded and sound bad.
@stevenveerhoff9208 Belmont TV was known for their TV commercials in the 70s and 80s. Not sure when they went away. But fond memories going in as a kid and playing with the Tube Tester.
@@lilmangofast I was working for them when they did see some of those commercials. The vocals were done by the Starland Vocal Band, who did jingles and promo work before and after Skyrockets in flight.
Great! So versatile and nice. Look behind him, a tv on a wall. How about design a picture frame for the tv that contains speakers? How good wouldn’t that look? Sweet
Yes!!!
Look great
Awesome build. You inspire me!. Keep up the good work
I still remember hearing those DA-10's in an audio showroom when I was in college, around 1984. I like them a lot, but liked the JBL's and KEF's just a bit better for definition and imaging. The DA10 had nice bass, if you were truly space-challenged. But I was able to accommodate larger speakers. I have no doubt your new imitations sound better than the originals.
You got the potentiometer to work with the variable shelf filter on the KABD-4100? I can't get mine to work at all. Guess I need to revisit Sigma Studio.
What does the waterfall and off-axis look like? And this is just a suggestion but why did you guys not round the corners? Those sharp edges may cause some diffraction.
Dang bro what's next a speaker that flat +-0.5db nice beo keep up the good work
Ever done a thin wall mount design?
low efficiency and a lot of surface reflections but a cool little cube anyway. you do amazing work!
you should consider doing a wood frame for your tv. Just something thin and simple like a mid century style picture frame. Maybe white oak. The cabinets and speakers are so nice, but the black plastic tv isn't up to the same quality of look.
I bought a pair of ps-10s to flip. I wish I'd have kept them. They sounded waaaay better than I expected. I'm keeping my eyes open for another.....
I may be able to help you
I don't understand the Radio Shack reference.
They were NOT from Radio Shack. I had the original PS-8's and they were a 2 way speaker. The PS-8a's were 3 way.
👍👍👍
👍
No rounder-over?
Your Background removal software does some weird things now and then. Nice speakers tho.
6:59 doody lol
I have a set of those
That’s pretty awesome! How do you like them?
Are the speakers flat for the room? does the program make the speakers flat for the room? so if i use your program it wont be flat in my room?
It’s anechoically flat which is what you want. Every speaker, the room will affect it. This being so flat has major advantages with that, as well as the potentiometers that can adjust the bass and treble
about 100.50 HZ ?
Or did you mean ..., one hundred fifty ?
How come theres such an enormous push in the HiFi hobby/culture for 2.1 bookshelf speakers? I live in a apt and have no problem runing freestanding floor speakers; whether its 2.1 bookshelf or floors, either one can upset neigbors... But why is almost everything bookshelf sized?
CZcams reviews are absolutely inundated with this.
It's very frustrating to have to dig through amp model after amp model's worth of reviews only to find out it's got all of 30 watts!!
You can have a lovely wall of sound at low SPL and excellent fidelity and still need a couple hundred watts for headroom (and a cool amp if you're running AB). This is especially true if you have harder to drive low ohm speakers or speakers low on sensitivity but with great sound.
With bookshelves vs floorstanders, as with cars, there's "no replacement for displacement". I've heard fantastic bookshelf speakers and for every model of those I've heard, there's a floorstander that will blow them away.
Build yourself some proper high efficiency speakers and 30WPC will be more than enough.
@@mkshffr4936Even for stuff like Polk Audio SRS SDAs, or Electrostatics? Tons of older popular Klipsch models out there that don't respond well to so few watts either. High efficiency ≠ high fidelity. They overlap but there are many speakers out there that sound excellent but have poorer sensitivity, and those little Fosi/Schitt audio setups that everyone raves about are useless in that regard.
I guess I'm kinda saturated on junk/useless information for my usage case with the whole hobby because so much of it is geared away from floor standing units, the why of which I've yet to comprehend.
I think a lot of people don’t want big and loud(perceived loudness) and a small speaker doesnt take up space and is easy to move. I only like small speakers for a very small room, producing(near field), and practicing dj’ing as you can put them on your table very close to your ear. To other person in this thread. I had 50wpc a/b and a pair of older Klipsch Forte and at about 30 watts it was loud enough to piss my gf off if I was playing drum and bass.
@@andyeighttre "To other person in this thread. I had 50wpc a/b and a pair of older Klipsch Forte and at about 30 watts it was loud enough to piss my gf off"
Not surprising as that would be about 110dB per channel @ 1m (103dB if both channels driven to 30W.
I think part of the cause is the fact that speaker technology has progressed enough in the past 25 years that we can now have reasonably deep bass in small cabinets without needing larger floor speakers, or even mid-size towers. Because it's possible, and kind of cool and almost counter-intuitive to have a smallish 5-7" speaker producing bass that only 30 years ago required a 10-12" woofer (in most cases) they have just become very popular. Plus all the Class D amps they're coming out with allow for smaller amp sizes, and built-in's. I kind of miss my Realistic 12" three-ways from time to time, but modern stuff mostly sounds better -- maybe just without the punch in the chest feeling.
Get a reference speaker to compare all your speakers to man ... Frustrating you just saying ... "They sound great" ... whatever that means.
If so had to take a wild guess, I’d say the speakers are sounding good.
