  • Recently I met Kirby from Kirby meets Audio at Midwest Audiofest. When we met, we decided to do a project together. And that is where this build came from. It costs under $300 and sounds amazing. In this video, I show you what it took to design the crossover and the goals for designing it.

    The woofer used in this project is the RS180S-8. At 1:50 I accidentally showed the graph for the RS180-4. I just want to be clear this is an 8ohm speaker using the RS180S-8. The description has all the links to the components used. Thank You Good Goat for pointing out the error in the video.

      Did you measure the speakers with a mic? I'm asking because of the baffle step. The response in xsim looks astonishing! 😉

    • @rako81sna
      @rako81sna Před 5 lety

      I was curious aswell, cause the simulation and the realworld are 2 different things, especially with a complicated Crossover.
      Also the caps and resisters and coils can vary a lot.
      In order to design a good crossover, you want to have tons of different cap sizes, coils, resisters and so on.
      Its not just done with simulating it.
      You have to change components and values and fiddle quite some time for a decent Crossover.
      And you have to measure the speaker each time you change something, so it is really quite time consuming and expensive.
      If you start with building speakers and crossovers and you dont have allready a huge collection of components for crossovers, you need to buy way more components as needed for the crossover for the obvious reasons above.
      A calibrated microphone, Software that most likely cost some money aswell.
      I would just use a DSP , so i dont need to hassle with all that stuff.
      Still need a calibrated mic tho.

      @@Tonewood I did. You can see the final measurement at 5:30 taken in Rew, outdoors, 5ft above the ground, 3ft away. The response is really nice. I was impressed with it. And the bass is incredible for speakers these size. I have these set up in my living room and there is no need at all for a subwoofer

    I've got the Dayton RS180-4P (paper cone version) along with the aluminum dome Reference tweeters in the front doors of my car and I can't think of ANY car audio marketed drivers that can compete with the clarity, bass and overall performance of them for the cost.
    *drivers are powered by SKAR RP75.4, active crossover used, 4Khz HP on tweeters, 80hz - 4Khz bandpass on 7" midbass. Subwoofer is Sundown Audio U-series 18" powered by MMATS Hifi4250 bridged

    Great video. Would you say MT speakers like this with the 180s would be loud enough for a 22x17 room for a home theater or would you go MTM. Also it looks like the drivers are rated at 60w without the tweeter. If I ran a 100w/channel on an MTM I'd be a bit under fully powering both the drivers excluding the tweeter. Would I lose a decent amount of low extension being slightly underpowered like that?

I would like to pair it with full range and cross around 800hz. As the DS270 is quite high sensitivity (90db), what sensitivity of the full range do you recommend as minimum to match the final SPL? Mostly I can find about 85db to fit my budget. Thank you in advance!

    I liked this video. I particularly liked your reasoning for where to cross-over based on off axis response graph of the woofer. Of course all things require compromises and in a 2 way design 1800 Hz is pretty tough for the tweeter (hence the need for the 3rd order high pass filter on the tweeter I guess). solid cores have more distortion in the lower mid range and up. so if your woofer is only doing Sub duties and you need a big value coil and dont have 100 to spend.. go iron core. for mid and tweeter always go air coil. also try to work with the resistance a coil might give, sometimes unwanted but somtimes it can be used to tailor ouput level at the same time and you might squash

      Haha, I do want to do a center and rears. 😁 This speaker does use an 8ohm woofer with a 4 ohm tweeter. It has a nominal impedance of 8 ohms, which is great for home theater

    • @goodgoat3096
      @goodgoat3096 Před 5 lety

      The driver spec shown in the video at around 1:50 and in the cross over design at around 4:30 both show a 4 ohm part and the f3 of the 8 ohm version as listed on the Parts Express site is not 33 hz, but 65 hz in a smaller vented box.

    • @Toid
      @Toid  Před 5 lety

      First of all, good catch. At 1:50 I did accidentally pull up the 4ohm version. I am not sure how I did that. Thank you for catching it. You are right the 8 ohm on PE website shows the optimal sized ported enclosure to be around 50hz. However if you put this is WinISD, you will see that around a 1 cubic foot box you can tune this to about 40hz with an F3 in the mid 30's. Which is why I always use WinISD to check all my figures. At 4:30, which shows the crossover design, you can see the woofer labeled as the 8 ohm version (rs180s-8) and the impedance to match it. I'm sorry for any confusion at 1:50. Good catch

      I looked at the tweeter and thought that it was the 4 ohm woofer, a big "duh" to me. This design on it's own resembles a high end boutique speaker and is very interesting. Sorry for the confusion that I introduced. Kirby has not yet provided the cabinet dimensions and I would assume a cabinet tall enough to get the tweeter to a good listening height and using a false bottom to arrive at the correct volume and maybe contain the cross over. This design reminds me of an improved Carmody Amiga? Nice work.

  • @tulipanz
    @tulipanz Před 5 lety

    I'm a little bit confused.... In your last video about full range driver you flatten your impedance with a notch filter. In this crossover you didn't.... Is so important to flatten impedance or why you did it or why you didn't ??

    • @Toid
      @Toid  Před 5 lety

      I think you might mean frequency response and not impedance? A lot of people appreciate flat frequency responses. This should, in theory, give you an exact representation of your source recording. But I, like many people, have sensitive ears. So I wanted to make the range from 1k-5k attenuated a little, so it did not hurt my ears, but still gives me a great response. No matter what, you want those peaks and valleys to be close (1-3db). So to conclude, you do not have to have a flat frequency response, it is just what a lot of people try to do, which is why I showed it in the video. Does this help?

    • @tulipanz
      @tulipanz Před 5 lety +1

      Yessss now i understand... I watch again the other your video about the notch filter. It was a little bit misunderstanding. The impedance change the shape just cause you adjust the frequency response peak and not the opposite. Now is all clear... Thanks again..
