Amazing Sound and Cool Unique Design - How I Made These Slim Open Baffle Speakers

- I made these to work with the main speakers in my dedicated listening room. They act similar to side surround speakers and don't put out much bass. But with a separate subwoofer, these sound very good indeed.
They are open baffle, in that they don't have a box. Making a speaker that way has some advantages, in that it put out sound from the rear as well that can sound more "full" and "open" and less "boxy". The output pattern is reduced on the sides of the speakers, making them more directional.

These speakers could go into production and be a success!
Dang.... those (nearly) freehand router cuts, those freehand spade bit holes, the perfect, perfect plunge cuts for the speaker holes... so neat and clean and *STRAIGHT*... I just can't imagine the number of yours, weeks, decades of practice it takes to be THAT good.
Outstanding John! These speakers turned out fantastic. Really enjoyed the video and your approach to building the base. As always, excellent craftsmanship!! Thank you for posting
Beautiful speakers. I really love the fusion of woodworking and audio on your channel. it keeps me tuning in.
Another great build thank you John.
beautiful work, as always. craftsmanship at its finest.
Finally we get to see the finished product. Thry look good.
Those are stunningly beautiful!
You make me want to work. Truly inspiring. Thank you for sharing.
Hello. Two observations of your crossover and it’s cover. The orientation of your coils are the same and therefore there will be coupling of the two sections of your crossover. Steel has magnetic properties and will enhance the coupling of your two coils. You have in effect built a transformer that destroys the design characteristics of your crossover. I suggest you replace that plate with a thick piece of aluminum or another non-ferrous metal, (I think McMaster Carr sells copper electrical bus bars by the foot that are rather heavy), that has the same weight. Orientate one of those coils such that it is at right angles to that of the other. Just mounting it vertically should suffice. If there is insufficient space for that with the cover installed, cut out a channel in the block of metal that allows for the needed extra mounting space. If you think they sound good now, these corrections will prevent crosstalk between the two drivers, (low frequencies bleeding into the tweeter and high frequencies bleeding into the woofer), that will create smearing. They will sound even better.

They look amazing John, great job as usual 👍🏻
They're a work of art! Very nice!
Mad skills on the woodwork and design. Kudos
Nice looking speakers John! Thanks for sharing the build with us!💖😎👍JP
John, you say they sound amazing. Honestly, I think they look very minimalistic and extremely cool. I'd be happy to have them sitting pride and place in my house any day 😊. As always, buddy 💯% 👍 🇬🇧.
As usual great work John👍
I bet they sound great, and they look amazing!
Cheers from Tokyo!
Wow beautiful work.

Enjoyed this artwork!
Nice job John. Looks great
Amazing work!
And they look... amazing as well! :)
Looks fantastic
Awesome!! Loved!!
They look great
Real beauty!
They must be heavy as well. Probably that improves the sound sound too
Gorgeous!
You blend the audio and the woodworking seamlessly. Nice clean look. So which came first? The love for audio or the love for woodworking?
Beautiful speakers
ok - Now I have to make your little circle jig 🙂.. Enjoyed the Vid!
Another classic WIN!
Great work as always.😃😃
Perfect for my basement family room, maybe a 10inch sub , dsp adjusted.
I've enjoyed the entire series - congratulations on reaching the summary video! Based on seeing your videos on DSP and amplifier building, I'm left wondering if you have a general philosophy on when it makes sense to do pure digital crossovers, when not, and when to do something hybrid. Would be great to see a video on that topic, as I'm currently finishing a DIY sub and amp, and nearly ready to build the matching 2- or 3-way bookshelf pair.
Beautiful!
Beautiful work here , I bet it sounds as good as it looks .👌
Thanks :)
would like more footage of the final product! looks fantastic
Awesome!
Fabulous!
Amazing
John, nicely done. Working on a a TB W8-1772 full range design with an 8 inch neo woofer. High and low pass crossover and paired with a SVS Pro 1000 sealed sub. All in under $1K, would put it up against about anything out the in the > $5000 range.
Beauty!
This pair gives off Spica Angelus vibes.
Brilliant work again, 0k I hooked I subscribed.
I am making was is called a pair of Betsy open baffle speakers and your video gave me some ideas, hee, hee, heee.
Thank you.
Love to hear the sound
Very cool.
Slap together some bits of wood, no chance of that here ... beautifully designed and expertly crafted, I wouldn't have expected anything less ... superb 👍
,a cool video keep up the great content.. Thank you……
Beautiful work, John! Amazing looking speakers!!! 😃
I want to make a small pair to use with my PC... Perhaps I could make like yours!
Anyway, stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Gênio fantastic very good BRASIL
Great video 👍
Thank you!
how is the bass response on these open baffle speakers? i love the design!
Im surprised you haven't gotten into crazy horn designs like Danley or Void
neat
yessssssss those look bad ass! by the way, what brand of peanut butter do you use to glue these bad boys together........
Show!
You should make a nice wooden subwoofer to go with these.
John: Ribbon drivers would have been better than traditional cone speakers in this design.
Bachman Turner will never sound so good again!
Oh, no! You've cut a smal part off of the aluminum fence of your miter saw... at 3:17😳 Great video, tho! Thanks!
Yeah but how do they sound? That's the most important aspect? What is the use if they don't sound nice, pleasant and detailed.
👍👍👍
👏👏👏👍👍
😮😮😮😮😎😎
👋👍
Inductor positioning is not 100%. 90° in Position horizontal for one.
👏👏👏👏🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷👍
Pace is really fast in this one, nice video otherwise
I consider it a mistake and stupidity to build open speaker systems without a closed cabinet. Since the sound wave emitted by the back side works in antiphase with the sound wave that is emitted in front. This effect is especially noticeable at low frequencies. Therefore, the bass does not sound.
So what you’re saying is that you’ve never heard a pair of quality OB speakers. That’s cool. Enjoy your boxes. Also, consider taking a class in acoustics. I did. I consider it a “mistake” and “stupidity” to make comments without the technical knowledge to back it up.
@@boomcrash I never said I haven't heard a couple of quality speakers. I have an excellent sound system. And I also heard something similar to what you are doing. It doesn't sound. Or you don't usually perceive sound waves. Sorry.
Be nice if you did everything by hand with no power tools. Doing things with power tools chases people away.
