- The Dinas (Do I need a Subwoofer) might just be the most powerful bookshelf speakers I have ever built. They both essentially have their own Voxel Subwoofer built in powering them to their max rms power. On top of that, the top half itself is powered, making these and unbelievable pairing. Take an up-close look at these guys before JoeNTell Reviews them.

Great Job on the Bookshelfs😎👌🏽
wow, they look awesome!! Great job, one of the best speaker projects i have seen.
Thank You. I really appreciate hearing that. I do love these speakers. It's too bad Joe ended up with them ;) Jk, He will love them!
Nice to see you getting "popular". I remember speaking with you about crossover design on someone else's video a good while ago. Such a neat speaker design is this!
Thank you, I appreciate it
👀😍 They look better than I expected. I'm so excited to review these and I'm excited for people to be able to build these themselves with your kit!
I can't wait till you get them today
Beautiful speakers. Well done.
Joe is gonna have fun!
Too much, haha!
Hey There! Wondering if the Dinas kit will become available again... I’m dying to buy it and build a pair, the looks amazing and from what you and JnT say they are going to be awesome for my little gaming area
Those are sharp looking!
dude i want to buy the parts for these guys so bad.. cheers to you guys for killing this..
Thanks KB. I'm glad you like it. They are pretty awesome speakers!
They turned out beautifuly! Looking forward to Joe N Tell's review.
Nice unique design
Great video. I purchased the build plans and trying to understand the capacitor value and crossover point. What is the crossover point for the tweeters? Looking online for a 3khz cross you need from 5uf to 8.8uf capacitor, but you use a 0.68uf. I looked around quite a bit before asking and the only thing I can think of is the polarity being reversed has something to do?
What are the exact parts list I would need, I saw that some capacitors were mentioned, I would like to get all the parts in one go instead of being halfway into the build and finding out I need a certain part... Love the video and the entire build itself btw I cannot wait to get my hands on this project.... I commented on Joe's video but have not gotten a response. I am really excited as this will be my first speaker build
I would love these to replace my pos sony system. I'm probably gonna end up building a desk that's larger than my current one with a hutch for like a workstation desk with my iMac. These speakers would be perfect for the desk I'll be building.
That sounds awesome! You definitely have a killer set up
Zaaaamn you're the sound man
Haha, well I do enjoy sound :)
I built these without the tweeter and they’re really great but kind of mid heavy around 1k for my liking so I’m thinking about adding the tweeter. At what frequency is the capacitor crossing over with the full range?
Do you share speaker plans with patreon patrons? I'd be interested in building these!
I'm just about to build those two speakers but ordering it in Germany (there is a shop in the netherlands) is pretty expensive. Just the woofer and the fullrange speaker plus two amplifiers is over 360$. Tweeters not available here. Then one thing came to my mind. Build just one cabinet with the fullrange driver and one cabinet with the fullrange and woofer and just one amplifier plate. I would use them in my sleeping room. I have to different heights on my shelf where those speakers would rest and I could cover the difference by have the one cabinet higher than the other by including the woofer in it. I would power the fullrange only from the output of the amp of the other speaker. Do you think that makes sense and would sound OKish? Not sure if the woofer will be cut so deep that you can not recognize where it comes from? Any feedback welcome :) Keep up the good work.
Love these things
Hey brother, are you planning on doing any more CNC runs of these? Thank you!
Yeah I would love a flat pack or something like it
I have an interesting question about the tweeters and specifically the fq response. When u tested them where they hard to get them to have a flat fq response or where they peaky in areas and falling off too early in the lower range. Just wondering because ive never dealt with tweeters that didnt have a baffle that they where mounted in? Aalso are they a soft dome tweeter because I heard that soft. Or silk domes are easier to integrate into a speaker set up.
I love you channel. Even an old audiophile from the 1970’s and 80’s component systems can understand.
I am renovating my home office and want true Hi Fidelity sound from my PC. Besides woodworking is a hobby of mine (and I am good at it). So a speaker build is my skills.
Where my knowledge falls off the map is what to use between the desktop and speaker. A DAC/Amp (separate or combo). An old 2009 Onkyo A/V reciever with only an SPDIF Optical in. No usb or hdmi to get to the PC. Or, like the DYNAS powered speakers. Technology has outran me here.
I personally want a powered subwoofer. When you music genre of choice is 1965-1975 ( the Woodstock era and the San Francisco sound of the mid to late 60’s. With some 80’s and 90’s metal and Hairbands thrown in the mix for fun. The “bottom” is important. (Listen to the bass in the 1969 Grand Funk Railroad “In Need” or “Inside Looking Out” and you will see where I want to be. But, I also want a crossover that can pick up the high highs when Stevie Ray Vaugh goes off on one of his tangents.
Left to Right mixing - as represented in the Doobie Brothers’s “Blackwater” has to be present as well.
So, without breaking the bank. I am retired, fixed income and a 65 year old cancer survivor. Budget is a concern. But, I won’t cut corners as much as possible.
Woodworking, soldering easy enough. Getting my Amazon HD Unlimited from PC to speaker - what equipment goes inbetween. That’s my delima. You probably have videos already answering all this and I just need to binge watch your channel.
Anyways - thanks for what you do. I am a fan and will continue to watch and learn.
That sounds like a good plan. If you end up with specific questions or want help just bouncing ideas off of, consider joining the forum. We would all be happy to help. www.toidsdiyaudio.com/forums
Can you Male a Video how a completely Passive Version would Look like? (Crossover) btw. The Look amazing!
I didn't create a passive network for these. If enough people show interest, I might.
Here's what's crazy is I actually put that same package together in an automotive setup. Of course without the box but it's the same drivers
Funny you mention car systems. I'm upgrading my mk4 Jetta and would love some pointers to keep cost low and quality sound high af! Would you consider pointing me in the right direction?

Thank you for all of the valuable and thoughtful information on your channel. After some research, I did purchase your plans for the Dinas. Having finally built the cabinets, I would like to offer some hopefully constructive feedback.
1 - These are definitely NOT speakers anyone can build. They are not tough and most people with interest and reasonable skill set can do it, but in my opinion the statement is a bit hyperbolic.
2 - In the future, if you plan on continuing to provide kit plans, I would encourage you to take advantage of a professional who has experience putting these together. They were challenging to work with and lead to my having to redo the original pair I built because of confusing presentation of the measurements.
That said I consider it penance for all the good information on your channel :) Again, thank you for the educational work you do. Looking forward to listening to these guys as soon as they are completed.
I'm thinking of getting these but I'm beginner at making any kind of speakers.
1.) I'm trying to get a good pair of speakers hooked up to my turntable. It has no pre amp and I have not yet purchased a pre amp. Since these speaker have an amplifier built in do I hook these up to the pre amp and that's it? Or do I need a pre amp and amplifier too.
2. Do these plans/kit come with wood already cut or do i have to buy the wood and make these cuts myself?
Any help would be appreciated. I feel like I'm going in circles the past few days with all this information ive been researching.
I built these not only as my first ever speaker project but also first wood working experience too. It wasn’t easy but I took it slow and it was completely worth it. Most of my problems were from lack of experience with carpentry like not accounting for the width of the table saw blade when making all my cuts 😂
Hello I purchased the kit yesterday but realized I am not able to build the speaker box because I do not have any experience cutting/glue/sanding wood nor do I have the tools. Do you have a kit with the wood precut? I was so bummed when I realized that the box wasn’t something you can just buy. Installing the component seem pretty easy but building the speaker box is out of my skill and I lack the resources. Thanks
If I were to buy the flat set, does the rest of the build require soldering? Thanks
Those look fantastic!! What was the total build cost?
Thank you. Depending on if you need the power supplies or not, it's around $250-300.
Hey 123Toid, i love the speakers, I have a question about cabinet material. I asked Joe N Tell and he recommended is ask you. I have a ton of 3' x 8' 2" thick maple butcher block style desk tops. If i respected the internal dimensions would that heavier material have any effect on the sounds quality? Thanks
Jeremy, as long as you keep the internal dimensions the same, you will be fine. In fact, those sound beautiful. I'd love to see a picture if then when complete
Sounds like it'll be dope!
I'd love to see those too! Sound like they'll be super dope!
That should make for some heavy Rock solid speaker cabinets ! Heavy too!
Would still love to see these
How difficult would this speaker be to build for a first time builder? I've never built one and would like to try.
Hi. Can’t wait to build the Dinas. My sons will be getting a pair each for Xmas as well. On Kirby Meets Audio he has a $5 plan for adding internal Bluetooth to a speaker. Do you see any reason why this couldn’t be added to the DINA build so that they are amplified and Bluetooth. Not sure I want an external BT unit...
Thanks!
Nice Hagen! That sounds like an awesome gift! I'm not sure how Kirby's plans are. But a word of caution would be each of these speakers has it's own amplifier, so you would have to run a cord from one of the speakers to the other. You would need to hook up a the left to one speaker and the right to the other. So you would want to mark the speakers somehow. You also would want to make sure you seal around that really well. It probably will not be just follow the instructions. Some custom work around will be necessary. So if you decide to go this route, it might be a good idea to get on my new forum to ask for help. www.toidsdiyaudio.com/community Having said that, I would just use an external unit.
123Toid If I use an external BT it gets wired into one of the speakers. How does the second speaker get signal? Do I have to buy a second BT receiver? Sorry for the stupid questions...
@@hagengocht3891 not a stupid question at all. The extra Bluetooth receiver will have a left and right output typically RCA. You just take one RCA cable and hook it up to the right speaker and one RCA speaker and hook it up to the left. So pretty easy. If you want even more bass, you will hook up a RCA y-adapter on each end, to go into both inputs of the amplifier
123Toid I am a cabinet maker but can built boxes and get thing soldered and mounted. The rest leaves me clueless. Any chance you could help out a sawdust master and just draw me a quick sketch. Having trouble picturing it... 😔
How can I get a hold of the Wood Kit Version. I dont need the hardware , I just want the cabinets (un-assembled) version so I can do the hardware myself.
I have recording studio that I would like to try these with.
I have many studio monitors sets like Genelecs 1030-A / 1034-B / 1037-B, Events-20/20, Avantone, NS10-M's, Mackies HR824's and many others. would love to try these out.
I dont own any CNC machines or other machines to make the cabinets, so im wondering if there is a pre-build CNC cabinets (un-assembled) version of the cabinets that I can purchase.
Thanks.
Hi,
What is the value of the capacitor you use with the tweeter?
Totally newbie to speaker construction. Just bought this plan on etsy, could you be more specific with speaker wiring to lp210, thank you.
Alfredo, contact me on Etsy. I'm not sure if you're referring to the internal wiring or the external. But either way, I want to make sure it's completely clear for you.
What did you do for baffle step compensation?
Do you include cad files usable with cnc cam software with the plans?
So when is the video on the passive version coming?
I actually sent a kit to another CZcamsr. He's going to be doing the video. I have no ETA on it.
Why did you go with 4 ohm drivers? I used 8 ohm because I wanted the option of using the speaker posts on the back of the plate amp to add a second pair of satellite speakers. I realize you are driving these speakers mono. But you could easily reconfigure them if your needs change. Adding a second pair of speakers to your setup would likely melt the amp.
Also, do you think it would be possible to mount a power supply inside or surface-mounted to the back of the speaker? The big 19v power brick on each speaker will create some extra clutter.
You can still have the option of running this off your avr, if it works with 4 ohm. Bu to get the maximum power out of the plate amplifier, you want to run 4 ohm. So with our planned design, 4 ohm made the most sense. You wouldn't want to mount the power supply on the inside, but depending on the size you could mount it on the rear. Another option would be to get a regulate power supply that would run both and just run power wires to each speaker.
I really like that plate amp. But I would like it even more if they added left and right speaker terminals on the inside. Soldering your own is not a huge deal. But they've already gone to the trouble of installing them for the subwoofer.
Either way, they're gonna sell a ton of those.
@@MisterFastbucks It would be nice to have screw terminals on the inside. I mention to folks, if you are nervous about soldering on the inside just run a binding post out the rear above the plate amps. Connect your speaker wires to that internally. Then externally run wire either to the binding post on the LP210PA or run it to another amplifier of your choice.
Are you still selling the flat packs for the Dinas?
so the 60W went to the 5.25'' sub-bass driver , while a 30W went to a 2-way crossover that split betwen the Dayton and the HIVI at ...000Hz , right ?
If running full power to the amplifier than yes.
With them wired that way isn’t the woofer mono? I wired mine up to only use the L RCA input on each speaker and used a single RCA to run to each speaker. So it’s completely stereo even down the the lowest frequency (yes I know sub energy is usually omnidirectional)
How you did that? I built two and I’m having hard times to set it up as a stereo
@@sid-ic5fr all I did was solder the full ranger driver to the back of the Left binding posts as the build guide PDF showed and then only plugged in the left RCA for each speaker (I just did this so they would be symmetrical and I wouldn’t have to wonder which was internally soldered to the Right channel.) I used a long 15’ RCA cable that can be split apart to any length so I could separate the speakers.
Im building a pair of these. I have the plans, but there is no mention of stuffing/filling that I can see?
The original doesn't use any. However if you'd like to add some, just add a small handful into the mid-range cavity and then you'd want to line the subwoofer cavity with acoustic foam, but keep it away from the port.
@@Toid really?! no foam originally to absorb unwanted reflections/resonance? I thought this would make it also quite 'boomy'. OK thanks for the reply though, I look forward to getting them up and running!
@123Toid Great job bro but how mush would you seal those for?
Right now, I'm just selling the plans. I may in the future offer kits, but not right now.
@@Toid ok sounds good some of us dont have the time! lol keep me posted thanks!
Will do. I'll post it on the channel. If you want to message me on Etsy. I'll see what I can do for you.
How much for a pair of these speakers and would you sell a pr.?
I bought the plans. Do you just hold these together with wood glue? There wasn't much info on the actual construction of the box.
Yes Kirk. You use wood glue or liquid nails and clamps. Whichever glue you prefer for your material. I don't typically recommend glue, since I do not know what material people will choose for their enclosure. Feel free to contact me via Etsy on any construction tips. I can recommend some glue based of the material you choose. I'll be happy to walk you through any questions you have.
@@Toid My brother has a woodshop and makes some furniture. I know he has some small pieces of cherry that would make a really pretty speaker cabinet. Black Walnut and some Maple also. Will talk to him about available material without having to buy any.
I just asked about the corners because some of the speaker projects I have looked at have slots or for baffles to slide into and rabbeted corners. Plus screws to hold them together. I guess with the smaller size of these, that wouldn't be necessary.
@@KirkDickinson your thinking is spot on. It sounds like you're going to have some beautiful speakers when you're finished. I'd love to see some pictures.
Unfortunately the Nick's Flat pack for the Dinas are not available.
How can i get them (already built) in Kenya?
is there a way for me to calculate the drawing in mm?
I am planning to build a pair of DINAS speakers. I did slightly modify the design. Check www.labakenia.com/dinas.JPG . I didn't like the vent in the frontpanel. It could also weaken the frontpanel? Still a question . . . It is not quite clear to me how to connect the speakers to the Lepai. You have a left and right audio input. Do I use one of them? I could solder them together (mono) and connect the subwoofer to the subconnector, the Dayton to the left speakeroutput and the tweeter to the right speakeroutput (with capacitor). Would that be a way of doing it??
Can you show us a build?
a build of these speakers? I didn't record the build process on these.
Where can I find the full build of this?

@@cuongtran-ty1te how to build the box is in the plans. Currently, I am not selling any flat packs.

What tweeter did you use?
All the parts are listed in the description. Here is the tweeter: Tn28B: bit.ly/2J00HsU
123Toid thanks
Does it have a waveguide?
Nikhil Gee the tweeter does not have a waveguide.
@@Enemji What I think you're seeing is the full range driver with the phase plug thingy
Is it still possible to get the Dinas build plans? The Etsy site is down.
Yes. Go to www.toidsdiyaudio.com/shop. I'll update the link now. Thank you
@@Toid Ok bought! Did you use any pollyfill in the speaker?
@@eugenebrown9803 I did not. But feel free to experiment
Can I just buy a pair of these? Sorry but I have zero skill on DIY
Don’t you mean a low pass at 100hz?
The answer to "DINAS" is yes -- those little subwoofers only go down to 45 Hz with a steep drop-off below that, beyond effective compensation via EQ/DSP given their very high impedance -- 25+ ohms -- at that frequency, and you want to get down well below 40 Hz for a credible low end. The power brick you recommend is also a little short of what you'd need to get near the Lepai-claimed power output(s) -- remember, even Class D amplifiers aren't 100 percent efficient and the specs for the TI chips in this amp assume 22VDC, not 19.
SofaKingNice!
boat880
The "crossover" is just 1 dollar... yeah, a cap on a tweeter is what's inside every POS speaker... I can't believe this guy is selling some time-alignment bullshit for his inability to actually design an xover.
