Ye captain speggeti brain was doing it for the money not for the job let alone Alvaro g abt his passengers
Right? Always think for yourself, especially in such situations, they don't want to cause panic, but that doesn't mean they have your best interest at heart, as in this case. Don't do drastic crazy shit though, but don't just listen like a sheep if your instinct tells you something's wrong, like a "blackout" causing a ship to tilt. Naval historian here. In days past, this Captain would have been executed for this, civilian or military. He absolutely changed into a suit to avoid assisting other passengers, which is one of the most selfish unconscionable thing ive ever heard of. There are modern day cruise ships where cabin boys assist passengers in an emergency, it is inexcusable for the Captain to not do anything for the passengers..not to mention it was HIS mistake. Honestly kinda surprised none of the dead passengers families had him killed
Exactly what I thought. He changed clothes to avoid responsibility. Awful
And besides, a captain goes down with his ship.

The sad part is that if they'd just said "Yes we ran aground, the coastguard are coming to relieve us" from the very beginning, panic would have probably been avoided all together

Or if they just told truth in the beginning and just cold blank took it. Instead of stretching it out, now the company behind the catastrophe just got away with it.

exactly. just because the captain fucked up doesn't mean the company isn't absolutely culpable
As an italian, i can say that "incompetence and corruption" is what sums up every facet of italian history from its foundation in the 19th century to today. We have lost wars because high-ranking people put their relatives as generals instead of people who know what a war is. An example is what happened in my comune (municipality in italian) a few years ago. They received 15.000€~ to decorate the town for christmas. All they did was build a christmas tree made of rusted scaffolding covered by a green protective net with a star on top of it, something that was rumored to cost less than 400€. Where did the remaining 14.600€ go? In the hands of the camorra (neapolitan mafia). This is also one of the reasons why we don't want to pay taxes in southern italy. Schettino probably had a relative working inside Costa Crociere who let him get the job, of course without having the need to do tests and do what is needed to get to the position of captain.

You didn't see water in the engine room because IT'S NOT THERE.
People often question the intelligence/competence of fictional characters, like in horror or crime. Saying "they couldn't possibly be that stupid!" and the like, and yet here is the perfect example of human stupidity in real life. This sounds like an episode of Archer ffs.
the more we succeed the more sloppy we get, and then we tumble apart
There is a difference tho. Unlike real life , in fiction there is allways someone to answer for the actions of the characters while IRL there is none , which means that its the author's duty to leave little up for interpretation if he can . Charater actions need to be excused by motivations, personality and so on.
Seccondly , the author is GOD as far as the book is concerned so he cant explain things by chance since there is no chance when you are GOD .
Thirdly realism is not necesarily good . Plausibility is what is good .
