32 Dead: The Cruise from Hell

- Costa Concordia... a name that still resounds heavily in people's heads. A cruise ship that capsized and sank, while carrying twice as many passengers as the Titanic.
The disaster wasn't caused by bad weather or engine problems. So how could a ship that big go down on the night of January 12th 2012, killing 32 people?
Beyond the indelible images seen all around the globe, few people know what really happened technically on the command bridge or in the ship's engine room that night. We looked beyond the disaster, going behind the scenes of the most daunting salvage operation ever launched, as hundreds of engineers and naval architects spent more than two years working to right and refloat the Costa Concordia. The engineers had to race against the clock to carry off this amazing feat. They orchestrated a colossal salvage project to limit the damage from one of the most staggering shipwrecks the world has ever seen.
A shipwreck that turned a luxury cruise ship into a gigantic hunk of steel that veered out of control.

A friend and I were on the Costa Concordia in 2008. That captain was such a cranky, rude jerk that we made it a game to capture pictures of him scowling. We weren’t at all surprised to hear how poorly he handled this event.
@ChrisW228 Wow! No way! What a coincidence. Happy to hear that you didn't experience this tragedy, and. terribly sad for those who did. Hopefully he's in jail, where he belongs.
You were very lucky then to escape this murde....".captain"
He was s coward.
We're you on this ship?
True captain. Coward
You can imagine if he had been a pilot on an airliner. I wouldn't put it past him to sneak and keep a parachute on the plane just in case of emergency. And he would bail out if it happened leaving his passengers to fend for themselves in a crippled plane.
Mario Pellegrini, the deputy mayor of Giglio, IS a real angel ! We hardly realized the courage he had to climb that wreck using a rope, and save those 10 people in such an horrible situation. What a glorious example ! Thank you.
Quel exemple magnifique ! Merci.
I’m still in absolute shock and amazement that a captain of a sinking vessel can just abandon his crew and customers
Go and hide in a local hotel
Drinking and eating
While people on board the ship he’s cowardly left to. suffer
He’s the worst type of human being that could ever captain a ship
Throw away the key to his cell
I don’t think that he should have been allowed to get away with just 16 years in prison for manslaughter. He could have saved everyone if he’d called the coastguard immediately after he knew the impact was fatal and abandoned ship as quickly as possible and not delayed.
He lied to the coastguard. I call that murder.
The real.blame lays with those who put him in charge 😅
😂😂😂😂 Such unbelievable horror. He's a psychopathic captain.
I think the captain's motto of 'last to abandon ship and sinking with it' also sank with the titanic...
@@mikoto7693 its laws in another country. not to mension the buisness this brought in for months. there was corruption involved in his jail time
I've watched several different versions of this story but that's the first time I heard that it was a family member that alerted the Coast Guard instead of the captain. Wow
This was shortly after the incident all over the news that he had refused the help of the Italian Coast Guard when called back. He was downright lying when he said "it is just a black out", he KNEW that the ship was doomed. And he was again when called by the CG commander/harbour master from Livorno, that he was heading back to the ship "organizing the rescue" and instead heading for land to save his own little dick. He should spend the rest of his life in jail, and I hope he doesn't even get to command a rubber dingy when ever he is finally going to be released...
Captain bailed out and saved his own but. He even lied to the coast guard which could have saved lives potentially. He risked thousands of people to give 50 strangers a light show and instead crashed his ship of thousands on the shore of for those strangers as he escaped and hid among them. If I am blessed on a another cruise at least I know that I am kind of on my own and to make my own escape plans. Imagine all the things found during salvage.

In this day and age, no lives should have been lost. The coast guard was available and the captain failed miserably to protect and save the lives of all the passengers.
Sorry, when government and greedy corporations run this planet, lives are just a tool to their main objective.
He acted more on behalf of the P.R. department of the cruise line that on behalf of the passengers currently depending on him.
I’m watching the documentary right now, just after the strike and I don’t understand why the crew aren’t out instructing everyone to get out onto the deck into the lifeboats.
Why wasn’t the Coastguard called within five minutes of impact? Why? He could have saved everyone. The captain could have saved everyone, especially if they knew that they were in swimming distance to an island.
Agreed

What an amazing community the inhabitants of this island make. They pulled together to help the passengers when they needed help the most, unlike that so called captain. The deputy mayor was a true hero that night. He put his own life at risk to save the lives of people he didn't even know. Meanwhile, the person whose responsibility it was to co-ordinate the rescue effort and make sure his passengers were all saved only thought about himself. The engineering team were also fantastic, what great work they all did. Additionally, I hope that the survivors made a full recovery, especially psychologically.
So sad. What an incredible feat of engineering to move the massive ship though. What an amazing man that mayor was. When the coward captain left, he takes it upon himself to personally go aboard and help rescue people, before even having any idea that the people that were supposed to be in charge had left the poor passengers on their own. What a great human being. Much love to him and all on the island that immediately helped.

The captain made a serious error in navigation, lied to the coastguard, delayed the rescue process, then fled the ship when passengers still needed assistance.
Not just an error - it said that he intentionally deviated the ship from it's planned course. He did this simply to make a show for the people on the island (and probably to impress the staff on the ship)... except it failed and he killed 32 people.

Et c'est pas uniquement les morts (qu'ils reposent en paix) mais également toutes ces centaines de personnes traumatisées à vie.
I don’t understand why he didn’t order immediate abandon ship as soon as it became clear that the damage was fatal to the ship. Get everyone out into life rafts, tell them about the island. Call the Coastguard. Get on the radio and beg any little boat captain to come out and help.

I genuinely don’t understand him. The freaking ship itself very, very clearly told him and the crew “I’m fatally wounded. I’m going to sink and there’s nothing that can be done to stop it.” Within minutes of taking that mighty gouge.
He had ample opportunity and plenty of time to order an immediate evacuation using the life rafts and call the coastguard to immediately assist. Heck he probably could have gotten on the local radio and pleaded for anyone with a boat to come and help. I don’t understand why he not only delayed but actually lied to the coastguard after relatives of the passengers contacted them.
This didn’t have to be a tragedy. Even if he’d done the bare minimum of immediately calling the coastguard and ordering an evacuation as soon as he understood the ship was a goner before bailing, everyone would have very likely survived.

That captain should have been jailed on the coast and forced to watch every single moment of recovery. How could such an unethical coward have slipped through years of being captain? People had to have seen signs. I haven't seen the ending yet, but I definitely think something is buried here. Like residential school abuse. These people are known as risky by those working with them. 16 years in prison. I really hope this leads to systemic investigations and changes so no other captain will take his boat on a joy ride while drunk. That wasn’t mentioned, but I explained why he ducked of sight for fear of a sobriety check. I hope maritime law prevents him from commanding anything other than a kayak, with safety bumpers surrounding his new assignment. I’m not sure what is more scary. Being on a giant ship during a disaster like this where people are crammed together and panicking…
Or being aboard a crippled airliner, physically locked out of the cockpit yet lacking the knowledge to fly/survive anyway, utterly powerless to change your fate.
I think I’d pick the ocean liner.
@@mikoto7693I just rather not pick that is a scary decision
I can't say I would be in a hurry to abandon the ship when they told me to get off if I knew I was just going to go in the ocean life jacket or not I think I'd still stay on that shit I'd go down with it I would go down in the ocean anyway so I might as well go down in luxury
