- The documentary film, 23 Seconds: A Louisville Mass Shooting features exclusive and intimate interviews with several of those involved in the tragedy that occurred at Old National Bank in Louisville, Kentucky on April 10th of 2023. The film recognizes only they should share their experience and pain in the hopes for recovery and healing.
The film delves into the toll of trauma, the pain violence leaves behind, and the heroism exhibited by those who risked their lives to save others.
The film is a WAVE Originals production and first debuted on March 29, 2024 on WAVE-TV.
Thank you for NOT focusing on the shooter but focusing on the victims and their stories.
Thats what made this SOOOOOOO BORING If you do not know the victims, they have no real impact on you so why get a back story? I am being honest.

This must be a young person with little life experience. When people are young they are sometimes selfish, stupid thinkers who are quasi psychopathic in their emotional reactions.
Just like how young 20s drive without consciously acting with awareness that a car is a deadly weapon. Swerving around vehicles impatient forgetting that even tapping a person can cause irreparable harm.
I agree. I feel hearing what they went through you get a better story of one, what happened, but two, how much of a problem mass shootings are. Not putting the light of the shooter but instead the victims is exactly what more of these documentaries and news videos should focus on.

The fact that 911 did not answer her calls is terrifying. Even if dispatch is on a call with another person nearby it’s gotta be an awful experience if the caller doesn’t know that anyone else has gotten through.
I’ve experienced this before in Louisville. I believe now you can text 911 if necessary.

What is the solution if you have 5 employees and 50 calls?
@@rachel0brusseau putting people on hold or allowing texts to come in. I know lots of call centers use messaging apps to allow one call taker to communicate with several people simultaneously. Versus one call at a time.

Ontario Canada here. Thank you for this update on Officer Wilt. My heart broke for him. When this happened I searched for updates on his status regularly. I am so very happy that he is still here and fighting. Thank you to the heroes that saved lives that day and continue to serve and protect. My heart goes out to those who have lost their loved ones and RIP to those lost 🙏🏻

That was a powerful video. It's given me an insight into what Americans face on a daily basis. I visited once and went to several states, one of which had open carrying. It freaked me out. We left.

After the first report that Officer Wilt had a “head shot” it seemed like that was synonymous with he didn’t make it. I am glad I watched this to see how well his rehab is doing. He must have some deficits that can’t be seen, but from what we can see, he, with the love of both his families, the Metro police and his mother and brother, and the support of the community, will have a long, successful life. This isn’t to diminish at all the loss the other families have experienced. Since five people were killed and only the family of one of them is in this documentary, there are four families who were not ready to share both how wonderful their loved one was and how they are coping with that empty chair at the dinner table.
The Sandy Hook massacre just happened to be on my birthday, so that date is impossible for me to forget. That was TWELVE years ago. I was just positive that FINALLY, something would be done to, if not totally eliminate, at least save some lives.
This documentary is just one tiny piece of the tragedies we are ALL forced to live with because a few people genuinely believe the loss of those lives don’t matter as long as they still have as many of any as many kinds of guns that they can have the money they have to buy weapons of mass destruction and keep them in their homes.
How many more…?
This made me cry. I thought that young police officer died and at the end I saw him come around the corner and that is what started the tears. RIP to those lost. Good luck officer Wilt.

It’s truly a miracle Nick Wilt survived that head wound! And it’s even more sad five innocent people were killed.
I remember when this happened and there were a plethora of people questioning why the two officers ran up to that building not being able to see inside…but obviously it was a rush to get inside and find the shooter. Thankfully the evil was permanently stopped.
Here in Baton Rouge we had officers ambushed and three were killed at the scene and one suffered a traumatic brain injury just like officer wilt. Unfortunately he passed away from his injuries a few years after.
These officers are very different than the ones that showed up to Robb Elementary in Uvalde.
Not sure if it for me to say but thank you for doing this documentary the way you did. It has always made me so sad and angry how most highlight the shooter in a way that glorifies the shooter and inspires copy cats. This one focused on bringing the victims out from behind the shadow of statistics and shows us a small glimpse of who they really were and those who lost so much when they were taken from them. So thank you. And now more people will no longer be just a number on a page. They are known. ❤

It seems as though we know better now about ptsd & the need for therapy! I had a colleague who was on a conference call with people in the WTC on 9/11, and it troubled her for a long time. She didn’t talk about it with us as colleagues, but I heard she attended therapy. ❤
I can so relate to the trauma surgeon. I am a flight nurse in another state. I began my career at the tender age of 17; with the thoughts of all of the wonderful things I could do for my fellow neighbors. My life was soon changed by all of the ugliness of this world. I have worked through a natural disaster that took the lives of over 300 people, unimaginable crimes and accidents, as well as illnesses that no one could imagine. I have no regrets. I pray daily that no one should ever see what I have seen-no human should. If I have made the life of just one person better, then I am truly blessed. The first people on my prayer list every day are first responders. May God bless everyone in this world.

Nice to hope no one sees what you have seen but America is obsessed with firearms. The last time we saw anything like this in Australia was Port Arthur and the country vowed to never have it happen again.. and it hasn’t. It’s all just very sad and trauma doctors and nurses in the US see things that others only see in war zones.

In 2023, 80,5% of all homicides in the United States involved firearms. This compares to 11% in Australia, 4% in the UK and just under 20% in Canada. In my opinion the gun laws in the US need to change. Just saying . . . . .

@@sharonmartin4036 Even the shooter himself said it was too easy to buy an AR-15. He had mental problems and could still buy this weapon. Eugene Stoner, the inventor of this weapon said it was designed for the military, not civilians. They had muskets when the 2nd Amendment was written not assault weapons. Until gun laws are changed, this insanity will continue. It's big business and along with the NRA have lined the pockets of the congress to continue. The damage this style of gun does to the human body is horrific. Ask any trauma surgeon. There's no sport in hunting with the AR either. There's nothing left of the animal. Look at these US tourists in Turks and Caicos who are facing 12 years in prison for having ammunition in their luggage. Assault weapons should be banned, period. Gun rights? How about our right to live!!!

I do not pretend to be a legislator so I don't know exactly which laws apply, but the UK did it after the Dunblaine shooting and Australia did it after the Port Arthur shooting, so USA could perhaps follow their examples.

We were founded on the principle that the government doesn’t give us rights, but rather God or the mere essence of our individual existence gives us rights. Australia still has many firearms, but not as much drug and gang violence. Most USA gun violence is perpetrated by those involved with gangs, drugs, trafficking, and with illegally-obtained firearms, but those events don’t make the media spotlight. Moreover, the media rarely focuses on the event in which a law-abiding firearm owner stops a crime in self-defense or merely by brandishing a weapon. That’s not their narrative.

I’ve lost a daughter in a traumatic event, she was 24, so I am maybe a bit sensitive to stories like this, but in all honesty I think part of my emotional reaction was actually to the citizens of Louisville who appeared in this documentary…..such compassion and caring was truly evident. This is an amazing documentary.
I live in NE Oklahoma and the similarities to a shooting that took place in June of 2020 is so scary. I wish someone would make a documentary on it so people never forget what these officers and their families went through and still going through.
Potential shooters just study how other shooters do it and usually learn from previous mistakes. It won't make people not want to harm others.
I agree. It's important for us to truly understand in order to impact change, as well as try to empathise with all those impacted. This is especially true for those of us living in different cultures outside of the US.
This is one of the best documentaries I've ever seen. Even if there is trauma, darkness, pain and the deepest senselessness.... at the end there is an outcome of love, humanity, great respect and - healing.
I'm deeply impressed. And I have a little more hope in me for all of us!

Do you know what would actually be a wonderful tribute ? If the fact that there is literally more than 1 mass shooting a day in the US and that is NOT normal , would actually sink in to Americans and that the disgusting gun worshipping in the US stopped and that people actually mattered more than guns and that Americans and the US actually cared enough to do something , anything , to try to reduce the amount of guns in the US , to try to reduce the amount of mass and school shootings , to try to reduce the amount of kids getting shot etc instead of doing absolutely nothing but sending useless "thoughts & prayers" over and over and over and over .

I live in louisville and this was so scary and very tragic. When this happened it really shocked our city, but our city is very strong. We came together like youre suppose to for your neighbors. Im proud to call louisville my home. Im happy to know that our officers, emt and fire personal are selfless people that have a passion for what they do and I can say I feel confident living in louisville knowing who will be there if ever needed. When this terrifying evil happens, I know they will go straight in, full force. They are amazing heros. A special thank you to them. I look for great, short stories. Once in awhile I find a video like this one. Active shooters. Changed lives. Starting over. Losses.
It breaks my heart that a person would go out and hurt innocent people. With all their photos being shown...I can tell they had a great life. A great family. Wonderful children. Wonderful wife. Wonderful in every way. The ending I wasn't expecting. I saw a young Officer that lost his life. Then it turned out he survived. Thanks for the beautiful ending for the young Officer that survived. Thanks to all Responders, Doctor's and Nurses.

A very well done documentary. It definitely hits home in helping to understand the impact of the national disease we are inflicting upon ourselves called "a mass shooting". I have close relatives who live in Lexington which is why I chose to watch this video. I am saddened that I had forgotten this mass shooting, too many of them, far too many. I will forever remember it now. Thank you to the documentary makers and to the police, firemen, ambulance, doctors and nurses who help all of us everyday.

This terrible event, perpetrated by a human being against his fellow human beings, teaches us that evil really does walk among us, and until something like this happens, we forget that act.

We can look at the recovery (victims, police department, survivors, family members, city) as the real story. It feels so heartwarming to see how much love we can all share. I felt the love and the connections made after this event.
But….this mentally unstable shooter was still able to purchase an assault weapon legally with the intent to use it. I wish we could change that. 💔💔
You're so right! This video was done so wonderfully. On your second point in your comment, I found an article that hit on that part. He left 2 notes, one at his home and one on his person, plus a few posts on his IG that were very dark in theme. After watching this, I searched for any other news about it on Safari and there was an article about what investigators found out about him. It's definitely something to look into if you're interested on the 'why', like I was. I wish I could say it satisfied my curiosity, but it only made this whole tragedy that much more palpable because of how he thought doing this would change things instead of going a more peaceful route. 😢 💔

I can't believe with all the 911 calls that the police didn't believe it was real until they heard gunshots over the radio when the other cop yelled officer down. Take all calls seriously. When I was a vol. firefigher we had gotten a lot of calls over the years for fires at our local lumberyard which were controlled burns but.......one night we got the usual lumberyard call this time it was for real, giaganic devastating fire.
Very nicely put together documentary of a horrific sorrowful day for the Louisville community and quite a few families who were forever changed! Thank you for sharing your stories, especially the loving memories!

The second you go to a hospital and they put you in a little room…you’re not taking that loved one home 😢💔 been there too many times. So sorry for all the families who lost their loved ones in another awful senseless tragedy
This doc was super well done and it's also amazing to see so many first responders (police, 911 operators, EMS, doctors, etc.) respond to an emergency with care, efficiency and professionalism.
I'm so very sorry for the family and friends of those who lost their lives. Officer Wilt, i pray for a complete recovery for you. To those injured inside the bank i will pray for comfort and complete healing.

Yes, an as someone who doesn't live there I struggle to understand the obsession with firearms, especially weapons of war. When we did the buy back of weapons we all united together as a country, to know the US has more guns than people and that these weapons take the lives of children and innocent people everyday and nothing changes 😢.
I wish more documentaries were focused on the victims, families and friends and the impact it leaves.

This was an excellent production. I was compelled to Google and learn about the local news network behind it. Ms. Dawn Gee you did an excellent job covering a tragedy. It is difficult for me to criticize any documentary about similar events….unfortunately it is usually the case. Every victim is an angel, every officer is a hero, the perpetrator was a monster, the parents are negligent blah blah.
You clearly asked poignant questions to first responders, families, brilliantly wove the 911 calls to body cam footage. You didn’t tell us how brave the officers were or how sad it is that this beautiful woman lost a great father. It speaks for itself. Her resilience is awesome. It sucks to have to mention this; but seeing officers of color put their lives in extreme danger in an attempt to save a rookie officer. The diversity of Louisville reminds me of why I loved Oakland and am quickly growing tired of my current home of Portland.
I majored in Sociology @ UC Berkeley before media narratives, toxic rhetoric and faux dichotomies became mainstream. The fact is most people are not left or right as they are defined today. The majority are reasonable. Unfortunately hyperbolic division is profitable and can win elections.
You captured the spirit of the city. Spoke with a trauma surgeon who was incredibly honest about witnessing so much unnecessary death has changed him as a man. I am glad he was a miserable pilot and could not cut it as an engineer. I am not religious but, ya’ll would be right to say he found himself where he belongs. You covered so many bases without injecting any unnecessary glorification of the many brave professionals who acted on the day of the incident and onward.
It is Kentucky. He should not have been able to obtain the weapon. Anyone in any state who wants to get their hands on a weapon absolutely can.
Personally I want to ‘take all your guns’ but I was raised in the Bay Area, lived in Oakland and now live in Portland. You bluegrass dummies are the ones who just don’t get it…..ABSOLUTELY NOT. That’s the same type of disconnected BS as gay marriage facilitates child abuse.
I have already seen ‘larger’ productions document this tragedy. They have their token talking heads with no connection to Louisville disrespectfully diagnose a killer, glorify individuals who do not need generic ‘hero’ narratives for an audience to understand exactly the caliber of people they are.
Admittedly I am often very critical of law enforcement and I there is an endless stream of reasons why. The bravery, improvisation and composure of these men and women deserves praise. The emotion shown by your young chief and the officer who helped one of the victims make his goal of joining the force come true was touching.
I am confident all of the professionals have received plenty of commendation and support. The woman who survived clearly continues to cope with impeccable character and grace.
Good job Dawn Gee and Wave team….. local news in most markets died long ago. Local print media is not doing much better despite a the hard work and journalistic integrity of a minority with salaries that would enrage public school teachers. Tegna, Nextstar, Sinclair….whether it is Portland, Bangor or Paducah. Your local news is far from independent, pressured to influence agendas of their parent company and most audiences are (understandably) unaware. Watching Irving, Texas push ‘local reporting’ on the Portland metro would be hilarious if I didn’t know the focus on homelessness, foreigners, some transgender idiot at the community college holding a solo protest in favor of lowering the age of consent to 14 (that wasn’t attended). You get it. It’s constant.
I thought I’d unload some frustration about all the manipulative trash that is being pumped into communities across the nation away from CNN, MSNBC, FOX bullshit. I am lucky enough to have been raised with a father who likes to travel and unfortunately his favorite method was via LeSabre. I have been to all 50 states and every Canadian province (Newfoundland, Alaska, at least meant a flight and a rented Bonneville).
I mention this because people are pretty friggin cool everywhere. Enough preaching from me……you guys did an excellent job in brief run time. I can only imagine how much good this effort will do for the entire community for decades to come.

I’ve been to Louisville…..it is home to Pizza Lupo just a short trip down Main St from the bank. The owners of the band Murder By Death have brought joy from Louisville to me whether I’ve been living in California, Oregon, Alberta or Denmark for over 20 years.

As the people of Louisville approach the one-year anniversary of this tragic event, please know that although the community is forever changed, life does get easier as time goes on. My town lost 12 citizens in a mass shooting in 2019. The pain is still very real, but memories of those taken are being kept alive by family and friends, which has softened the pain for the entire community.
This documentary was well done, and tastefully commemorates the sacrifices of the police and civilians during that tragic event.
I hope that the city of Louisville continues to heal.

5 min in and I was in tears over Baby Josh aka Dad of the Year.....my memory is so faint of this incident. I do know about the emotional trama of losing family members. I had 3 taken in 12 days of the covid. My Sister Liz 59....Mother Mary 79....Brother Chris 57....I was born in between them......IF IT WASN'T FOR WHO I KNOW....GOD JEHOVAH JIREH....then I would not be here this very moment.....Daddy Paul....85 and other younger Brother Joe 53....gone in 2018 n 2019.....6 mos apart. They are all in heaven and I will see them again one day.
What sad about all this is it takes something so horrendous or tragic to happen before people realize what they took for granted. Knowing that there people that are there to help and bring people together during this difficult time is heart touching! It call love
