    This show was/is Anna Sawai, honestly, there’s talk about a second season but imo, without her, the soul of Shogun won’t be there.

      The show runner has said there will be no second season because the story will achieve its intended ending. I respect that. So many series keep going because they can, and not because there is a destination. I’m particularly thinking of Westworld, which had a perfect ending two times: (the seasons 1 and 2 finales) then went completely off the rails.

    Mariko was my favorite character as well. She took fate into her own hands in the Japanese tradition of the time. Creating an epic death and powerful story for her death. Flowers are only flowers because they fall.

  • @BorisCosier
    @BorisCosier Před 28 dny +6

    *Hosokawa Gracia (1563 - 25th of August 1600)*
    Mariko-sama is based on this unparalleled historical woman.
    And here is her last written words.
    Her death poem:
    散りぬべき 時知りてこそ
    世の中の
    花も花なれ 人も人なれ
    _Only by knowing when to fall_
    _Do flowers become flowers_
    _And people become people_
    *Hosokawa Gracia walked the short road to perfection - short, but not easy. She died when she was only 37 years old.*
    _In her life, she endured burdens no one should have to bear - treachery destroyed her family, her husband was mentally and physically abusive, and she spent years in hiding for fear of death. Yet she emerged from these pressures as a diamond. I compare her to a gem, first, because her birth name, Tama, can mean stone, gem, or pearl, but second because of all the different sides or faces that composed her being, sides offering us different perspectives from which to view her life. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but no matter which of Gracia’s faces we choose to analyze, that of a samurai, a proto-feminist, a wife, a mother, or a Christian, they are all beautiful._

    • @joeyartk
      @joeyartk Před 27 dny

      Tadaoki was not physically abusive to her, but to her Christian servants who angered him by helping his wife join a foreign cult. They got along well until that. They had 5 children and although she was smart and beautiful, she did not really accomplish anything other than die with honor. And even that was arranged by Tadaoki, who was a great samurai.

    • @BorisCosier
      @BorisCosier Před 27 dny +1

      @joeyartk That may, or may not be the truth. Sadly almost nothing was written about her or their relationship.
      Well, she did actually accomplish somethings. For example, to exist in the minds of two random people from around the world, commenting here some 400-ish years later.
      That's probably beyond her wildest dreams. Kudos to that 👏

    • @joeyartk
      @joeyartk Před 27 dny +1

      @@BorisCosierI think her fame is more thanks to her Catholicism and promotion of that in the west by the church. However, I don't mean to insult her abilities. It's just that unfortunately because of the time period she was in, she really never got a chance to show her full potential. She certainly impressed Tadaoki, who never remarried despite living for 46 more years. And don't forget that one of her and Tadaoki's descendants was Prime Minister of Japan 30 years ago. So she still has actual influence to this day.

    I love the ending they gave Lady Mariko: she was able to sacrifice herself for her cause but not commit what she believed would have been a moral sin. And the moment when Blackthorn offered to be her second was a grand expression of his love for her.

  • @georgeseurat
    @georgeseurat Před 28 dny +19

    The change of having Blackthorne proposing to be Mariko’s second is the most romantic gesture among all the renditions of the story, because going back to Mariko’s sacrificing herself at the end becomes a gratitude given back to Blackthorne…
    As the official podcast mentions, ladies who are going to take their lives will not have a second as the act is not ‘seppuku’. If they have a second, that is more for volunteering to show support. So changing to a moment when Mariko realises that she actually will not have a second, meaning she will go to hell, cutting back to Blackthorne contemplating on what he sees, then steps up to propose for being her second, not only this is finally his showing of affection towards her not by begging her to live but putting her to rest, also accepting what she truly wants is the ultimate gift he can give her…
    Thus, when they were cornered in the storage room, and Mariko looks at a Blackthorne who is using his whole strength to recuse her and others (again, several cut-backs between Mariko’s expression and her POV on Blackthorne’s back), she knows that she has to repay that gift by killing herself to save him, because she knows, if she doesn’t do it, her lover will die, and that’s not what he wants…

      why would he die tho? she didnt save him at all

    • @peetabells
      @peetabells Před 25 dny +1

      That's inaccurate and not true to her character. She died not because of him but because of her duty. Her love/feelings for Blackthorne never eclipsed her loyalty and sense of duty. Mariko has always been about it.
      She wasn't meant to be killed by the shinobi but only captured to imply that she escaped out of her own volition which could absolve Ishido's hand. Her death means that Ishido is fucked bc the other noble families will realize he is a traitorous mf.
      Also, I learned that Ishido doesn't come from nobility and Mariko affirming and mentioning his father's name/ her bloodline (albeit disgraced) in a dignified manner during the council, that was such a big dig at Ishido's insecurity...and somehow she also put back honor in her family's name when she used Akechi Mariko instead of Toda Mariko moments before she died...sacrificing herself for a greater cause.
      Damn. I haven't felt so affected by a character in so long and I fear Mariko-sama is one of the best female characters ever. Anna Sawai did a brilliant job. We know she's winning the awards.

    In Mariko's own way, she sacrificed her body for not only her Lord Toranaga, for the future of The Japans, but to use her flesh to shield the man she fell in love with... John, the actual moral savior of hers whom [his hand] she "held on to"... in lieu of her fate/cross, in uplifting her from the lifelong shame and sorrow. In her final act, Mariko tried to protect the man who finally broke through her eightfold fence and saw her secret heart.

    The color of the sky at dusk when Mariko tried to commit suicide was The Crimson Sky.
    It would be great if Mariko were still alive, but the historical facts are as follows.
    Mitsunari Ishida (Ishido in SHOGUN), who was an enemy of Ieyasu(Toranaga in SHOGUN), tried to take Garasha Hosokawa (Mariko Toda in SHOGUN) hostage at Tamatsukuri's Hosokawa mansion in Osaka, but Garasha refused. The next day, Mitsunari went out to use his force and had his soldiers surround the mansion. When the vassals told Garasha everything, Garasha prayed a little, then gathered all the maids and ladies in the mansion and said, ``As my husband has commanded, I alone want to die,'' and led them outside. . Later, as suicide is prohibited in Christianity, the chief retainer, Hidekiyo Ogasawara (Shosai), intervened with Garasha and committed suicide by setting explosives in the mansion and setting it on fire so that no body would be left behind. Her death haiku was, ``Only when you know when it is time to scatter can flowers in this world become flowers and people become people.''
    A few hours after her death, Father Niecchi Sordi Organtino visited the burnt remains of the Hosokawa mansion, picked up Garasha's bones, and buried them in the Christian cemetery in Sakai.
    Ishido must have tried to imprison Mariko somewhere.
    Rather than killing Mariko in the video, he was trying to kidnap her.
    If he kills Mariko, he will make enemies and divide his allies.
    That is Toranaga's aim.
    Before the full-scale battle begins, the outcome of the Battle of Sekigahara will be decided by how many daimyo join your side.

    John, In the book and first T.V. series Toranaga marches overland to Osaka with his army and Mariko, Blackthorn, Fuji etc. Toranaga knows or suspects the feelings Mariko and Blackthorn have for each other. So it's in his power to give her a few short day's of happiness for the first time in her life, with the help of Fuji. Before Mariko has to go on ahead to Osaka with Blackthorn and Yabu -sama and a small party of samurai. While Toranaga goes on a long round about journey towards Osaka. Will he ever get there? Cheers, Chris Perry.

    Mariko's and Blackthorne's relationship is not based on physical attraction, but on mutual trust and friendship. Mariko was convinced she would be eternally damned. Blackstone was the only one willing to step up and save her from that fate.

  • @georgeseurat
    @georgeseurat Před 25 dny

    Please read… it’s the yearning and supressing that makes it romantic…
    //Mariko was never in denial about her love for Blackthorne, even if she hid it deep within herself. “Circumstances are not going to let her be with him, and so you can’t keep chasing something that you’re not going to be,” Sawai says. “It’s not healthy to keep wanting to chase it, but it’s undeniable what they share. That connection is truly just their own thing. It’s very, very intimate.”
    Mariko never believed they would end up together, but Sawai reveals that her translator definitely “holds onto” their connection as a comfort in tough times. She doesn’t let her guard down again, however, until circumstances push her to let go of all restraint.
    “In Episode 4, when she does get with him, she believes that her husband is gone and she goes on this imaginary date with [Blackthorne] and they share something that’s so special,” the Monarch: Legacy of Monsters star shares. “She keeps holding onto that, but I don’t think it’s realistic for her to try to proceed with the relationship until Episode 9 when he shows her this gesture of love.”
    They slept together once more after the thwarted seppuku. The energy between them in that moment was a defiant refusal to deny their feelings any longer, initiated by a yearning Blackthorne. But even if Buntaro had died, Sawai doesn’t see a world where Mariko and Blackthorne would have ended up together forever. “I don’t think it was realistic for that to happen,” she admits.//

    The real Adams never even met Hosokawa Gracia, who the Mariko character is based on. The woman he married was nothing like her. He married a common woman after he had been in Japan for 13 years. He also wasn't made Hatomoto until he was in Japan for 5 years. And he was nowhere near any of these battles. Remember, these characters were basically hijacked by Clevell for a fantasy. Almost none of this story is even close to true. Only that Adams landed in Japan the same year Tokugawa won the war to become Shogun and gave him advice on foreign affairs and shipbuilding later on. That's about all that's true here. And Tokugawa used the cannons he took from the ship, but they had no real effect on the battles.
