      The historical character that Mariko-san is based on- Hosokawa Gracia san , actually did leave an actual death poem the flower poem is based on. Recently in Japan there was a political scandle and the Mayor was forced to resign his post and he quoted her poem in reference to himself. Hosokawa Gracia's descendant is a newspaper editor today and was outraged at a disgraced politician quoting what is his ancestors death poem.

      I disagree with this. I see death as a disease that needs to be cured. At least allow us to live longer. Moat of humanities mistakes come from how short lived we are and repeat the same mistakes, over and over.

    Ishido did not catch that Mariko's poem was a dud. It goes to show that he was a mere peasant. Mariko had every right to remind him that SHE comes from samurai lineage.

    Blackthorne is essentially taking on the sin of murder, by becoming Mariko's second. In normal circumstance the second is the one that ends the life. Hence the power of his statement of having experienced hell.
    And Mariko counters Blackthorne's gesture by saying to wait until she has fallen (actually die) so she will spare him the sin of killing her. Her committing the dagger plunge is a suicide attempt, but the sin of suicide happens at poing of death.
    That scene was breathtaking. They both showing the depth of their affection to the other.

    Ishido wanted to confine Mariko. He prepared ninjas for that purpose. He ordered Yabu to send ninjas to the Toranaga residence. The ninjas tried to explode only the door to secure Mariko. Yabu knew the ninjas' purpose, so he tried to move Mariko away from the door. Even for Yabu, Mariko's actions were beyond his expectations.

    The scene where Mariko, who comes from a thousand-year-old samurai family, expresses her pride at Ishido, who has gone from being a peasant to being a bureaucrat to being a member of the Council of Regents, was ironic for Ishido, wasn't it?

  • @gypsy1rose417
    @gypsy1rose417 Před měsícem +58

    "Crimson Sky" was never Toranaga's huge army staging an invasion. MARIKO WAS CRIMSON SKY. This was a long 14-year game. THIS is why she was kept alive. They all knew Ishido would never let her go. This is why the ninja attempted to kidnap her, rather than just kill her right away. Ishido will be blamed for her death and he will be exposed as the lying, corrupt, hostage-taker that he is. The other noble families will revolt. I will also bet that Ochiba turns on Ishido.

    • @beck99o
      @beck99o Před měsícem +13

      Exactly this! Mariko knew she was going to die as this was the plan that Toranaga told her to action. Its hard but sacrifices must be made for the greater good. Now when Toranaga sweeps in with his army, they will be 'saving' the noble families and heir from Ishido, this will give them the support they need to gain power/Shogun.

    A subtle part of Mariko's act of sepaku is her request for a Christian second. In that way she is actually killed by beheading so she is not doomed to go to hell. Anjin by offering to behead her takes on the sin thus his comment on he'll. And she tries to stop him by asking him to wait till she "falls." It is the subtext that makes that scene so powerful.

    hiromatsu KNEW what he had to do, toronaga even tells mariko that. hiromatsu's last words were to basically trust toranga "even when he looks like he has given up on himself" - key words are "looks like" because he in fact is not. even toranga said the good of japan comes before the good of their survival. crimson sky entailed that hiromatsu unalives himself. that was the plan all along, even when hiromatsu suggested crimson sky earlier, toranaga declined and was hesitant because he knew it meant hiromatsu will unalive himself and mariko will risk her own life. this entire show kept foreshadowing the idea of death being as valuable as life is and that the japanese had no problem giving up their lives for the conveniences of those they serve.

    Crazy how Toranaga foresaw all this and it all went according to his plan- it’s not so much as if he had an anime brain but rather he knows how to read people and predict their moves. He saw all of what Ishido would do if he sent Mariko to Osaka.

    Thank you for the reaction but the only thing that Blackthorn cares about is himself. He proved it when he asked Her, "to do it for him". He doesn't care about Japan or its people. He is only focused on how wealthy he can become. He doesn't get it. On the other hand, Mariko is trying to save Her country. Please research the history that this story is about. It is about real people. It is truly heart breaking that Mariko was murdered, but it was necessary. This will be the catalyst to unifies the country. Get out the oxygen the last episode will be breath taking. This is tv at its finest. Please, stop comparing this TV series to others, there aren't any, period. Thank you again for your reaction.

      No I think Blackthorn cares about Mariko more than Japan. I also think Blackthorn actually does care for Fuji, Toranaga. But it's personal with him. It's not philosophical or abstract like it is with the Toranaga clan (who's duty and entire purpose is to serve Toranaga and a united Japan) and Japan is something he will never fully be a part of because he's a foreigner. He has no ancestral ties to that land so of course he will care about Mariko more than Japan

    Ok, from the start let me comment on your opening statement.
    It was shown in the flashback, during the training scene of Mariko with the Naginata: Buntaro was looking longingly at her; and her smile fades as soon as she saw him. In the same background she shows disdain for the Toda clan, calling the union, a worthless alliance.
    Plus by episode 6, Buntaro, a great warrior, goes to his Lord, busy with preparing for war, and moans to him how she has been icy towards him for 14 years. Who does that? How much proof do you guys need that he was not always been a shit husband? And all that is on screen. Heck, even in that tea ceremony, he outright says he only ever learned to do it FOR HER.

  • @khaii13
    @khaii13 Před měsícem +5

    I’m sure a whole lot of y’all Crimson Cried. You were all chasing after a Crimson Herring, only to realize, too late, that you believed a Crimson Lie.
    Despite my criticism in previous episodes about how Mariko the wife continued to handle her domestic affairs, especially after how the truth of as to why she was kept alive has laready been revealed; I do have all the respect in the world for Mariko, the Retainer. She fulfilled her duty and managed to say out loud what every Lord in Osaka was feeling but were too afraid to say. And she also made the distinction clear: all the people in that assembly are samurai, while Ishido comes from a line of peasants. And she was committed to everything to the end.
    (Minor Tangent: I am happy the gate scene was not a "girl-power mopping the floor with all those men" moment) Now all of Osaka's Lords are soured against Ishido; and Ochiba might have to put the engagement on hold in order to Mourn Mariko. Her mission is a success.
    Speaking of which, it’s so heartwarming and heart breaking that “Leave us” scene between Mariko and Ochiba. I'm Happy Ruri-hime did not just outright hate Mariko for being her father's daughter; but their exchange was so heartbreaking as they both knew each other so well and what the other was doing and them pleading with each other to make the step to end the hostilities, and saying their goodbyes like that... it was made clear: Ochoba was willing to do anything to continue on living, while Mariko was samurai through and through and was trying to convince her that the duty is what is most important. The fact that Ochiba-Sam’s had to turn away to hide her tears and she can’t maintain her mask )9 fold fence) was just Gold. i think I'm sweating through my eyes. 😭😭😭
    And Blackthorne finally doing the right thing and deciding to Second Mariko, instead of just dismissing all of Japan's customs and cultures as BS , that was the best gift he could have ever given her. So much so that despite my misgivings about Mariko the wife; their last night of intimacy was completely EARNED. As a Christian myself, Blackthorne pretty much says “despite me wanting you to live; I will kill you and add this sin on my conscience so that you will not condemn yourself to hell.🥹🥹🥹
    And thankfully, Ishido stepped in, because Blackthorne was already shown as not capable of properly wielding that sword. Imagine if it had to be shown on screen the Anjin having to chop a couple of times. 😱😱😱
    Yabushige's betrayal was to Kidnap Mariko AND not lay a hand on any of the VIPs (it was shown on screen that Shizu and Kiri was not killed when the shinobi identified them in their sleep). They need to make it look like some bandits or assassins got to her while she was sneaking off in the evening despite getting her permits: that was why the shinobi did not kill her right away, but rather were trying to take her away. Mariko became aware of this right away and chose where to meet her end: she did not go to the gate where she would get captured as Yabushige intended. Having grown up there with Ochiba, she knew what would happen when she chose to hole up in the store house.

    I think people dont get that toranaga wanted mariko dead not ishido,. he made sure of that by sending yabu with her. He knew ishido would go to yabu if mariko succed in freeing the hostages forcing her the kill herself. Marikos death would mean major revolt among the regents. which is the outcome he wants... to be hoenst.. i kinda think toranaga is the bad guy in this story.. he wants to be shogun.. which means the child heir needs to die...
