    My father, my grandfather, and my Tata sailed the oceans like all their ancestors. I am American Portuguese from Madiera. The burial is still not on holy ground, but it is a custom that the deep is in many ways at the very core of existence. Our very essence.

    that whole fuji/blackthorn boat scene.... how it was framed/edited kinda gave me the vibes of some future fuji and blackthorn relationship, either romantic or at the very least platonic. I didnt get the feeling that she would go be a nun after blackthorn helped her to move on from her Grief. I mean the nun thing was because of the grief and not being able to move on.
    it would hilarious if the last wide shot of of them together in a boat alone on the ocean is the show telling us, yea we are ""shipping those two" xD

      That was my favourite scene of the episode. They both found a way to deal with their loss.
      I knew Mariko was going to die, cause that's what happens in history, so I was hoping in the first few episodes that Blackthorne and Fuji would eventually end up together. Her learning he is not just some dumb brute and him appreciating her presence and attention to detail. It wouldn't be a passionate relationship but one based on mutual respect and appreciation.

    I know people like to interpret what Toranaga told Yabushige that Ishido lost without a battle being fought at Sekigahara, but that wasn't the case. The battle was still fought but the outcome was predetermined that Toranaga would win since Ishido's advantage was taken away by Lady Ochiba.
    The historical Battle of Sekigahara still occurred and it wasn't bloodless. It was still a burtal battle that Tokugawa Ieyasu (the real daimyo Toranaga was based on) won because some of the daimyo that originally supported Ishido either didn't show up during the battle or switched sides.

      i Honestly dont get hy the western audience likes to interpret it that way. Toranaga simply laid out his scenario where Ishido loses the support of the heir and his supporters defect from him; but even in the scenario itself, Toranaga said 5 armies met on the field that day and he did not account for the numbers. I dont know where the bloodless part comes from.
      The entire show (and also the book it was based on) was on big setup for Toranaga to be in a position to win the final battle when it does come.
      The broad strokes were revealed, but the details of the final battle plan (including the politicking to completely flip some of the Lords who have been completely soured by Ishido) and how the battle actually ensued are still hidden.
      So who is ready for a “new/separate” mini-series, titled “Sekigahara”?

      @@khaii13 Not going to happen unless the showrunners change their minds or someone else decides to write a treatment for a spin-off. The two showrunners have confirmed that this was just a mini-series and not an ongoing one.
      FX may end up adpating the rest of Clavell's books dealing with Asia: Noble House and Tai-Pan.

      @@Tullaryx one can dream man. They built relationships and created an entire crew to make it happen. And I don’t mean just the actors: I also include all the expert that they got primarily from Japan in order to create the authentic feel of the product we already got.
      The main problem is that the show does indeed end where Clavel’s novel ended. And so, if they want to create an “Original/New” series/feature titled “Sekigahara” that would pick up where “Shogun” left off, they would have to write an entirely fictionalized version of the historical battle and all the backdoor stuff in the last month leading up to it that would pick up where the show ended.
      But if this show racks them high enough and is hyped enough and investors see the numbers in their odds… one can dream…

    • @MustardSkaven
      @MustardSkaven Před 21 dnem +2

      What Toranaga did was basically make it so his enemy had less troops. That's what his scheming lead to. The battle is still going to happen, he didn't prevent a war or bloodshed.
      That's why I understand why people wanted more closure. Cause now we have an assumption he will win the battle but it is not shown that he actually does (you don't need an actual big CGI battle to achieve this conclusion).
      And the biggest moment for me in the episode was when Yabushige called him out for wanting to be shogun all along. It exposes the fact that Toranaga played everyone, including the audience. Ishido was right in episode 1 to accuse Toranaga of being too ambitious and becoming a threat to both the heir and the council. Yet I don't see many people calling that out.

    • @khaii13
      @khaii13 Před 21 dnem +3

      @@MustardSkaven exactly. He just tipped the scales in his favour. And even then, the historical battle was close. So close that, if one or two Lords didn’t flip in the last possible moment, he would have lost.

    Really liked the moment whenn Toranaga said ''Why tell a dead man the future'' it was a reference to what Yabushige said about Toranaga to Omi in the early episodes, which could only mean Omi was working for Taoranaga from the start. Amazing short reference.

    During the 150 years of war in Japan, warlords are living in an era where they do not know if they will be destroyed at any moment unless they devise strategies and plans.

    Toranaga always wanted to end that era. Therefore, I think it would be a mistake to view people using current common sense.
    Some people make judgments based on the current perspective in comments on other channels, but we also have to consider the historical background.

    • @JohnRochaSays
      @JohnRochaSays  Před 17 dny

      Yes, but we only consider it because it worked out. We wouldn't consider it a success if it didn't. We don't read too many histories of the people who tried to do this and it didn't work out. Part of considering a historical background is also realizing that to was written thru the prism of the people who won and are invested in painting themselves in the best light.

    「オーガは、彼が足元に花を押しつぶした瞬間に、彼の貴重な葉のない枝を失いました。結局のところ、姉妹」
    “The Ogre lost his precious Leafless Branch the moment he crushed the Flower underfoot; sisters in the end, after all” For the first time in the entire series, Ochiba sama looks directly to Ishido while talking to him; in all other episodes, she glances at him but looks away. That was the most subtle, passive-aggressive death stare I have seen on screen to date.🫣
    Yabushige and Toranaga smirking at each other in the end was awesome, too. Yabushige got the best end he could have gotten, considering all he has done: realizing that whether he knew it or not, he has served his Lord Toranaga excellently. And maybe, just maybe, lightening the burden in his conscience a bit, afterall: a future Toranaga victory will never come to pass if Mariko did not die INSIDE of Osaka. Goodbye to our favourite sociopath.
    Blackthorne kills a possible future version of himself-an old man, filled with regret, clutching on to Mariko’s crucifix-by mirroring Mariko (literally doing a ritual su!c!d3 like a woman [a blade through the heart] instead of seppuku [slicing his belly open] like a samurai would) in order to protect Ajiro: the first completely selfless thing he has done in the show; and also by letting that exact same crucifix go into the water along with the ashes of Fuji-sama’s family. And to think he did all those things mostly as an act of kindness to Fuji-sama… she deserves the best. 🥹🥹
    "I forcced fate to gaze upon me so that I can pluck its eyes out"
    -Ochiba no Kata
    Also, the fact that Anjin used the word 詰まらない【つまらない】 (tsumaranai) when he said “my war is small” can also be translated to “my wars are petty/trivial/silly/worthless” in reference to his ambitions and designs for England and his war against the Catholics. That was him letting go of his personal ambitions for something greater.
    The setup to be in a position to win the final battle is mostly complete, and the broad strokes were revealed, but the details of the plan and how the battle ensued are still hidden.
    So who is ready for a “new/separate” mini-series, titled “Sekigahara”?
    Ohhh, and what was Toranaga holding in his left hand just before it cut to the title card?

    This was an amazing show. I don't think the relationship needed to be "solidified" anymore. She was a married woman she didn't even need to do as much as she did. Words are enough it doesn't need to be thrown in your face to know it's real.
