    Old john was a dream. He never goes back to england. He marries a japanese woman, has kids, keeps being friends with toranaga and dies in japan at the age of 56 year old. That's what happens to the real person who blackthorne is based on (william adams).

    The most beautiful part of the finale for me was how many people were affected by Mariko’s death, either by regretting it (Ishido, the Regents, Yabusige), remembering her poetry (Lady Ochiba, Toranaga) remembering her words (Blackthorne, Fuji), or honoring her wishes (Toranaga, the Monk Alvito).
    Toranaga’s vision (and four-dimensional chess game) was finally realized, but the show never forgot that Mariko was the true heart of the story, transforming everyone by her life and by her death, and destroying Toranaga’s enemies in a way an army never could. She was such an unforgettable character in a such a wonderful show.
    Thank you, Mariko-dono. You are the beautiful flower that finally fell, but, thankfully, you have been carried by the wind for all of the world to see and cherish, and you will never be forgotten.

    The title of the episode refers to the dream Blackthorne is having of him, dying of old age, safe at home in England, with Japan far behind him. It is a vision which disappears each time he awakens in the scene. It ends when he finally abandons the dream, and tries to commit seppuku for the village. He dreams of returning to England no more after that point. It's not a flash forward, it's the title "Dream within a Dream" literally, where the phrase also refers to the illusory nature of life, or life's imperminence from a philosophical point of view. Hearkens to several spiritual traditions, notably Buddhism where all of reality is but one of Brahma's inhalations as he dreams. Dovetails with Einstein's E=mc^2, which is the statement I prefer personally fwiw.
    The book, since you asked, ended precisely the same way. The Battle of Sekighara was a huge and famous battle. And to Japanese audiences, the Mariko historical figure makes the whole plot of Shogun really kind of known from the start. Like, nobody in America went into the movies and was surprised when the Titanic sank. But we still went to see the movie. So Clavell was not about writing the war at the end of the campaign, he was all about the chess maneuvering of Iieyasu Tokugawa, the real life Toranaga, on the campaign trail leading up to the decisive battle. And I guess there's a whole literary tradition of taking side plot arcs of these famous historical battles and political pivot moments in history and making an entirely new fictitious story just to allow everyone to explore the setting. So Clavell was being quite faithful to Japanese literary tradition as well as history in his love letter to Japan.

    Toranaga's secret heart was subtly revealed between Yabushige and Toranaga when they smiled at each other.
    He sacrificed everyone close to him: Jinsai (Mariko's father), Nagakado, Hiromatsu, Mariko, and even Yabushige.
    He was never a good guy.
    He wanted power and he was willing to do anything to achieve it.
    He wanted to be Shogun.

      Don't think Nagakado's death was part of the plan. It's obvious he was teaching him to take over after him which is why he was so furious with Nagakado for allowing himself to be manipulated. Probably one of the few times he let his anger get away from him. The boy was Toranaga's little tick he was definitely planning to rise up with him. If only Nagakado could have been more patient.

    • @enicole1203
      @enicole1203 Před měsícem +1

      I would argue Nagakado, Hiromatsu, and Mariko sacrificed themselves, and the latter two did so in a way to help his cause, precisely because he IS a good guy and he SHOULD ba Shogun. Nagakado was an accident, but he did what he did because he believed in his father, and Toranaga was smart enough to take advantage of the opportunity the loss of his son gave him. He is definitely shrewd and not given to getting lost in emotion but he's a good guy, that's why he inspires such loyalty.

    I want to share fun facts with you about Kiku the courtesan from the book! She had a bigger role, but she was not ambitious/manipulative of Omi as shown here. She was a pretty sweet girl, about 19, and she and Omi did like each other. But he probably liked her a bit more. The night Anjin came to her brothel, she found she liked him and they had a great time laughing with Mariko to lessen the awkwardness. Since she found she liked him. She realized she was ashamed of how Omi had peed on him in the beginning, and so when Anj[n left in the morning, (a little to punish Omi and a little for her own amusement), she held her bow to him for a very long time, which got the whole town gossiping about his "prowess" to make her stand there so long to honor him.😂 She knew the whole town was curious about the most famous courtesan in Izu and were secretly watching in the morning. The men in town gossipped the most.😂😂
    Two more things: the district the old madam proposed to Toranaga with her stick of time would eventually become the culture of the geisha.
    And finally, after Fuji (Fujiko in the book) finished her six months as consort, Toranaga granted her wish to join her husband and baby, requesting she make it look like an accident. Meanwhile, Toranaga, who had purchased Kiku's contract, eventually gave her to Anjin as courtesan, then as wife. Partially to keep Antin off balance ( Kiku was extraordinarily beautiful) but also to keep Omi in check as he knew Omi loved her and he was a potential threat after inheriting Yabi's power. Since Anjin was a hatamoto, this means Kiku's children would be born samurai, so she was very happy.
    Kiku was a great character, I understand why her storyline wasn't in the show but it was actually cute and funny so I wanted to share.

Hacked it up to guilt for being the one to let the assassins in, thus leading to Mariko's death/victory, and maybe the knowledge thst he had failed Ishido and betrayed Toranaga and his days were numbered. But I like your thought thst he was humbled by Mariko's courage and the knowledge that he could never be the legend she was.

    Sorry this is going to be another long one. Absolutely loved your reactions to this show! You're very insightful and I've thoroughly enjoyed hearing your insights as the show progressed.
    To answer some of your questions, the show ends where the book ends. The battle was one paragraph in the epilogue. The books's pretty good so you can check if you want. I recommend getting the audiobook if you decide to go ahead and read it as the book is quite long but in my opinion worth it as you get a peak into almost every character's mind including Toronaga. And there's other things that the show couldn't cover because of time constraints like the secret of the heir's parentage
    More seasons are unlikely as
    the showrunners said have said they don't want to continue without source material to adapt. They also clarified that the 'flashforward' was just an alternate future that John imagined he could potentially have. It's why they stop after his attempted seppuku. At that point he chooses to give up that potential future. In a sense he's accepted that he'll never go back to England which track with the historical person his character is based on. William Adams never made it back to England and spent the rest of his life in the service of Tokugawa (Toronaga).
    From history we know that Tokugawa/Toronaga wins the battle of Sekigahara and becomes shogun in 1603. Two years later he abdicated and hands the title over to his 2nd son but maintains power until his death. In 1615, the historical models for Ochiba, her son, and grandson are forced to commit seppuku after they lose a conflict with Tokugawa. With their deaths, the final threat to the Tokugawa shogunate is removed and their reign over Japan continues for over than 200 yrs. The history of this time period is fascinating! Definitely check it out if it's something you're interested in. Again, I have loved your reactions and I'm looking forward to watching others on this channel.

  • @shopahauliquewithjacquelin7025

    I semi remember the original Shogun (only clear memory was John getting peed on), and probably watched it in reruns after the success of the Thornbirds, which I loved at the time. I was probably too young when Shogun first came out. I only gave this new one a go because I am OBCESSED with Cosmo Jarvis. I apparently watched him in Netflix's Persuasion when I was sick, because I have no specific memory of having watched it, but when I rewatched it, it triggered a memory some scenes he was in, and I IMDB'd him. My computer showed I had already looked him up. No memory at all of Dakota Johnson also being in the movie (not my favorite). I know it was popular to pan the movie for its odd modernisms, but Cosmo stood out. He was shy and endearing and vulnerable and charming. I also had a faint memory of the ending love song, Quietly Yours by Birdie. LOVED IT. I may now name my foal that once I see it when it's born next month. Someone took my first-choice name of Triple Sec (for triple Secretariat) and only one horse every 10 years can have the same name, unless it is a significantly name, then it is permanently off limits, like Secretariat or American Pharoah.
    That movie made me dive into Shogun 2024. I find it is the best show I've seen in the 2020s. I am an old GoT fan from the 2010s, but once they were off book, they were lost in the Kingswoods, then they went north and got lost in the Wolfswoods. I still think The Hound is one of the best fictional characters ever and I will stan for SanSan. It is books supported.
    That being stated, Cosmo was cast in the movie, when the creators saw his performance in the movie Good with Horses. I need to find that movie, because I love his performances and I love horses, win-win. He also got great reviews in Lady MacBeth. I will be watching that this week.
    Have you considered doing a deep dive into the actors in the major roles and their other significant roles. Like it is funny that Anna and the actor that played her nemesis in Shogun, Ishido, are daughter and father in Monarch, the Godzilla TV show. Just throwing that out there.

    The story was great, but it wasn't seamless. Two loose threads I'm confused about is why the church would allow a threat like Blackthorne to live. What did Mariko & Lord T bargain with in exchange? Some say sinking the Erasmus, but Blackthorne is pulling it out of the shallows to repair it, so that's not likely. I could see if Lord T still allowed the church to build a temple in Edo, but not with the teahouse and Ladies of the Willow World as next door neighbors. That I could accept.
    The 2nd loose thread is what happened to the ninjas after the door explodes and kills Mariko. Why would they abort the mission?
    Perfect ending but not a seamless story.

    • @Celequendi
      @Celequendi Před měsícem +3

      I'll use some context from the book to answer the first question. Because of limited time and the showrunners desire to centre the Japanese perspective of things, the show didn't fully go into the conflict between John and the Catholics.
      Mariko and Toronaga used information from Lady Gin, the owner of the brothel to bargain for Blackthorne's life. In the book, Gin trades in information. In exchange for her son being made samurai she passed on info that one of the Christian lords ( I think it was Ohno) was planning to assasinate Kiyama after Toronaga has been dealt with as well info about Ishido's doble dealings with the other members of the council. Toronaga through Mariko offers Kiyama (whose wealth was largely dependent on Portuguese trade) an alliance. the burning of the Erasmus was to remove the immediate threat to his wealth and a gesture to show Toronaga's sincerity. With the immediate threat to Portuguese trade removed for the time being, the division among the Christian Lords became a more pressing issue especially since Gin's info about the assassination had come from a former Catholic monk and priest-in-training who had broken the sanctity of confession, putting the trust between the church and the Christian lords in jeopardy. Basically, Toronaga and Mariko gave them bigger problems to worry about. Which is why Toronaga tells Yabushige that he'll probably have to destroy the repaired ship as well.
      As for the shinobi, their mission was to capture Mariko not kill her. Once they had failed their mission, there was no need to stick around and get killed or captured. Hope this clears up some of the confusion.
