James Clavell wrote 6 interconnected novels in his Asian Saga. Shōgun, Tai-Pan, Gai-Jin, King Rat, Noble House, and Whirlwind. The original mini-series was so popular they followed it up with a mini-series adaptation of Noble House a few years later, and a feature film of Tai-Pan. I'm hoping the success of this show will lead to them adapting the other books too!

The most beautiful part of the finale for me was how many people were affected by Mariko’s death, either by regretting it (Ishido, the Regents, Yabusige), remembering her poetry (Lady Ochiba, Toranaga) remembering her words (Blackthorne, Fuji), or honoring her wishes (Toranaga, the Monk Alvito).
Toranaga’s vision (and four-dimensional chess game) was finally realized, but the show never forgot that Mariko was the true heart of the story, transforming everyone by her life and by her death, and destroying Toranaga’s enemies in a way an army never could. She was such an unforgettable character in a such a wonderful show.
Thank you, Mariko-dono. You are the beautiful flower that finally fell, but, thankfully, you have been carried by the wind for all of the world to see and cherish, and you will never be forgotten.

In the after the episode podcast on the FX channel the actor of Toranaga talked about how he understands how the character of Toranaga feels taking on the role of Shogun for the sake of Japan, and how he couldn't do enough for the culture as just an actor and had to become more (producer) in order to in his eyes bridge the culture gap and misunderstandings of the east and the west. He also mentioned how meaningful it was to him to bring a Japanese crew of production and actors into this limelight and hopes to use this bridge for him and others to be creative in the future. I'm sure this won't be the last Japanese epic we see from him.

Thank you for watching according to the time and space in Nihon.
The heart that Sanada wants to convey is how to end the line, and the real words are hidden in the line of the heart between the next word.
Many commentators don't notice this, and they feel like they have heard half of the words and understood everything, and they are immersed in their own story, so they can't feel Nihon from the story.
It's called humility, you respected and watched this atmosphere, but it said it was humility, and the two of them were able to enter Nihontime and space from there.
I was happy. Thank you. Come to Nihon someday. You guys are welcome.

It's been awhile but in the book Sekigahara (the decisive battle) was a 1 page mention in the epilogue, which is pretty much how it's presented here. There are plenty of material to continue from history. It would be nice to see Toranaga/Tokugawa's relationship with the emperor for example after he becomes Shogun.

The novel ends, but the interesting part of Japanese history starts from here, the ``Battle of Sekigahara'' between 80,000 soldiers of the Western army led by Ishido and 70,000 soldiers of the Eastern army led by Toranaga, this is a battle from Game of Thrones. epic battle over
Eventually, after unifying the country, Toranaga attacked the impregnable Osaka Castle, where Ochiha no Kata and his son, whom he had led to victory, were living in the battles of ``Winter Jin'' and ``Summer Jin.''
Japan's history is interesting from now on. Season 2 should be produced.

I just realized, oh man, the ruse of Toranaga on Buntaro, while you were talking about Buntaro (hopefully the show would make Buntaro's episode on season 2 on how he got away from Osaka), that Toranaga probably had some doubts about Buntaro, after he escaped Osaka. It all made sense now and it was done in the most subtle way. First, upon arrival to the Anjin's household his vibe turned from dark before Osaka to very dark after Osaka, from the conflict during dinner up to the point he blamed the sake, Toranaga may already have some idea of what's going on in Buntaro's head reason why he let him stay with the Anjin, Mariko, and Fuji, beforehand. Second, Buntaro keeps on blaming the Anjin for the flailing affection/attention from Mariko, and at one point asked for the Anjin's head (Omi may have got into Buntaro's head and after this finale I realized that Omi has always been Toranaga's spy) but he keeps on denying Buntaro of it. It was all building up and to a certain point Toranaga was sure his most skilled Samurai would flip and either boil up or give up on him - we see this as confirmation when Buntaro ask to have tea with Mariko, he spilled what he truly felt about Toranaga - that he given up on his Lord and would rather commit seppuku as means of protest (with consideration of surrendering of course but I'm sure it's deeper than that). Lastly, Hiromatsu being his father and closest, knows his own son more than anybody, and being Toranaga's old friend, he probably already figured out that his friend is playing a ruse on his son. Hiromatsu played Toranaga's own ruse (who better than the person who knows you better than anyone, right?) and made Buntaro swear in front of his generals and Toranaga to not give up on his lord - he made it sound like Toranaga was giving up when it's actually meant for Buntaro - after being denied by Toranaga and Mariko. Hiromatsu may have wanted the other generals to be spared from commiting seppuku but I think now the sacrifice was driven more for his son 😢 this made me cry a bit, the love of a father to his son, to live despite of it all. Buntaro's look of disdain towards Toranaga completely disappeared when he looked back to his father and made him promised to always be loyal 😭 Knowing Buntaro is the last remaining bloodline, Hiromatsu committed seppuku to protest for him so that he'll no longer have to do it himself but instead to live on for him to continue the family lineage 😭

    • @SutekhDaSteemroller

    「オーガは、彼が足元に花を押しつぶした瞬間に、彼の貴重な葉のない枝を失いました。結局のところ、姉妹」
For the first time in the entire series, Ochiba sama looks directly to Ishido while talking to him; in all other episodes, she glances at him but looks away. That was the most subtle, passive-aggressive death stare I have seen on screen to date.🫣
Yabushige and Toranaga smirking at each other in the end was awesome, too. Yabushige got the best end he could have gotten, considering all he has done: realizing that whether he knew it or not, he has served his Lord Toranaga excellently. And maybe, just maybe, lightening the burden in his conscience a bit, afterall: a future Toranaga victory will never come to pass if Mariko did not die INSIDE of Osaka. An understanding passed between them, no words needed to be said: Toranaga desires to be Shogun, afterall.
    Goodbye to our favourite sociopath.
Blackthorne kills a possible future version of himself-an old man, filled with regret, clutching on to Mariko’s crucifix-by mirroring Mariko (literally doing a ritual su!c!d3 like a woman [a blade through the heart] instead of seppuku [slicing his belly open] like a samurai would) in order to protect Ajiro: the first completely selfless thing he has done in the show; and also by letting that exact same crucifix go into the water along with the ashes of Fuji-sama’s family. And to think he did all those things mostly as an act of kindness to Fuji-sama… she deserves the best. 🥹🥹
"I forcced fate to gaze upon me so that I can pluck its eyes out"
    -Ochiba no Kata
Also, the fact that Anjin used the word 詰まらない【つまらない】 (tsumaranai) when he said “my war is small” can also be translated to “my wars are petty/trivial/silly/worthless” in reference to his ambitions and designs for England and his war against the Catholics. That was him letting go of his personal ambitions for something greater.
The entire show (and the novel it was based on) was one giant setup to place Toranaga in a position to win the final battle.
The broad strokes of the scenario for the final battle were revealed, but the details of the final battle plan (along with the final politics to fully turn all the lords who now have a soured opinion of Ishido) and how the battle actually ensued are still hidden.
So who is ready for a “new/separate” mini-series or feature film titled “Sekigahara”?
Ohhh, and what was Toranaga holding in his left hand just before it cut to the title card? Crimson Herring!
