Hatamoto means “guardian of the banner” which are direct retainers or bannermen to daimyo (lords). They essentially are lesser lords that command military units/lands but pledge loyalty to another lord. The historical figure that Blackthrone is inspired by William Adams; the first English pilot to reach Japan and eventually became hatamoto for Tokugawa
*under the banner is the literal translation
Beautiful dialogue between Mariko and Blackthorne in the pool 🤩I also love Fuji, her character is incredible, and she endures so much suffering.
One of the few issues I've had with the second half of the season was the awfully low amount of Fuji.
@@SCharlesDennicon Season?
@@dallesamllhals9161 there's only one season
Yabushige just can't catch a break in his attempt to come out on top somehow some way 😂😂😂
Bro is in a quest to commit treason, but loyalty follows him like a curse.
He watched Fallout - don´t lose your head.
@@sld1776 That legit made me laugh out loud 😂
He's trying to win at playing tic-tac-toe while Toranaga is playing three dimensional chess :P
Most weekends I chat with my folks over the phone. Last weekend we were talking about all the different shows we're watching, and I mentioned Shogun to my parents (who are both in their 60s), and that's when my *dad* chimed in and mentioned this series. I was taken aback since, in my 37 years of life, he never once mentioned ANYTHING about Eastern culture, let alone any series. He's a Gunsmoke, The Rifleman, and Seinfeld guy. That weekend, I learned that my dad was a huge Shogun fan back in the day. My mouth was agape for a good 2 minutes.
Doesn't surprise me. The 1975 book was a huge bestseller and the 1980 miniseries a big TV event.
1. Fuji is the granddaughter of Hiromatsu and neice to Mariko and Buntaro
2. Blackthorne is Hatamoto, the only person of higher rank is Hiromatsu
3. Toronaga is playing 4D chess while everyone else is barely playing checkers, no matter what happens he will find a way to make it an advantage
All of the characters are based on historical figures and it reminds me of a Koan that us taught to school children about the great unifiers of Japan
Each was asked what they would do with a bird that does not sing
Oda Nobunaga (Kuroda) says "kill it"
Toyotomi Hideyoshi (The Taiko) says "coax it to sing"
Tokugawa Ieyasu (Toronaga) says "wait"
Yabushige is a daimyo. He is also higher ranked than the Anjin.
@@teongreen5254 not in Toronaga's circle, Yabu still has to "schedule" appointments with Toronaga or be summoned, Blackthorne has immediate access rights as Hatamoto
「鳴かせてみせよう」自分で···です。やってみせよう。という事で、他の人にさせようとしてるのではありません☝️😊
Hatamoto = bannerman, e.g. high-level vassal. You were correct about natto - fermented soy beans, super-sticky.
and smelly, kinda like spoiled cheese 🤢
So this show is based on a book, that is drawn from actual history for the beginning of the Tokugawa shogunate.thats why it's a rich show in lore💯🤩
Yea Mariko, as the wife of a Samurai, would also learn how to fight to protect the home while her husband is away. Great reaction :) also, YabushigE not Yabushigi
There is a long tradition of samurai wives learning the naginata to fulfill their duties in protecting the home and potentially going to war as well.
I love Yabushige character. Sure he's working for his own self preservation and yhat might not be honorable but he's funny.
I’ve really enjoyed your thoughtful reactions to Shogun. Thanks for sharing.
Both women know Mariko spent the night with Blackthorne. They are relatives and are covering for each other.
One of the things I've been most impressed by is the lead actor's accent.
He sounds like he's trying to sound like Richard Burton 'doing an English accent'.
Richard Burton was from Port Talbot in Wales, which is also where Anthony Hopkins hails from!
In the book, a rutter is kept by the pilots. A “pilot” in this era is an old name for what we call a navigator. It was not uncommon for a pilot to also have additional titles such as Pilot Captain. Again, in the book, each pilot kept two rutters: one “official” log and one private log. The private rutter would often be written in code or short hand
The banner symbols are clan/family crests, while the helmet crests are personal to the individual samurai. Yabushige's helmet crest and banner symbol are the same because he's the head of his clan, while Omi, who is Yabushige's nephew, has his own personal crest. It's the same with Toranaga and his son, Nagakado.
Translations
Hatamoto = guardian of the flag
Anjin = pilot
Sama = honourific eg: Mr/Mrs/Sir/Mam etc
sama is for lord or lady. it's honorific class
The food is Natto, or a fermented soybean. It's stinky like a ripe cheese, kind of gooey. It's pretty much 50/50 on people either really liking it or really hating it. I think it's quite good on a bowl of hot rice with a raw egg yolk on top.
one thing not shown in detail vs the book is that Anjin first sees how clean japan is and starts to compare it with how dirty london was. Anjin starts to assimilate and becomes mindful of cleanliness and was greatly shocked when he meets his old crew, with being how dirty they were
When Nagakado attacked Jozen's men, it was not with the standard canon shots. If you remember just before Jozen showed up, Blackthorne was explaining the "chain shot", which increases the diameter of damage. So imagine segmented canonball attached by a chain blasted out of the canon. That's why the men and horses were shredded. Apparently this type of attack is meant more for ship battles to take out sails, masts and rigging. Considering how damaged the Erasmus was when they drifted into that harbour, it was likely a victim of a chain shot
the halves connected by chain have a tendency to spin in air. The range is a bit less but the damage is greater over a large area and yes, devastation is to the rigging and parts of the mast and sails. It takes out Sailors and Marine Sharpshooters pretty well too.
Gotta’ love Fuji🙌
7:22 "what does that mean exactly?" Hatamoto means "Flag Man", "Banner Man" or "Guardian of the Banner". You get the idea. Hatamoto is the highest samurai rank serving a feudal lord (Daimyo). The daimyo knows him by name and Hatamoto has an audience right to the daimyo. Hatamoto is expected to die serving his lord. Either die in battle defending his lord's interest or commit Seppuku alongside his lord when he surrenders
13:39 A Privateer is NOT a Pirate....well, sometimes...eh...hrm...
16:18 ..and he BOILED a Babarian...
Hatamoto is the title for a samurai who serve the high ranking samurai directly. In this case, it's Toranaga. It's different than just an ordinary samurai or a foot soldier.
2:40 A consort is more than just an unmarried woman whom the man she is consort to can mate with. A hatamoto needs a household, and it is the consort's duty, if the hatamoto doesn't have a wife, to run the affairs of the household itself, as well as to support the man she is consort to with his affairs. If Blackthorn decides to build a fleet, for example, it will be her duty to know what's involved in building ships, such as where these can be built and what materials and equipment are needed.
Lol yall thinking the box was cute at first got me so good 😂
Anna Sawai is so good at meaningful expressions without speaking.
1 koku is equivalent value of 1 year of rice for 1 person. So at 200 Koku a year he is getting rice value for 200 people.
Portugese still fought similar to the Spanish with ship cannon. Bigger heavier guns with shorter range. English built lighter guns that shot further and could be adjusted for accuracy easier. That's part of why the English beat the Spanish Armada aside from the trickery of the burning ships, their guns were hitting the Spanish ships before the Spanish ships could hit theirs.
ほんとに吐いちゃうかと思った笑
かわいい
The dish Mariko assumes Anjin will not like is Natto, fermented beans that are gooey and very smelly. Popular breakfast in Japan today. My wife eats it regularly- I can’t stand it 😊
Same. i have to have American style breakfast other meals, im good for almost anything else. Sushi is any time.
The emblems on the flags, helmets, armor and clothes are family crests/clan crests called "mon". Every samurai family would have belonged to a clan, unless they are "ronin" or masterless. So when the ship came ashore you seen Yabushige's clan holding his flags.
All armies in Japan of this era wore on their armors or flags on their back the crest of their lord. Usualy they wore even clothes of the colour of their lords flag/crest. But this wasn't so mandatory. The crest was though. It was practical so they recognised their allies and enemies on the battlefield.
This is correct and just like european heraldry one was expected to know the units/clans that were your allies so that mistakes could be avoided and so that you knew who to follow. They are called Kamon or Mon for short.
@@darrylw5851 Exactly
Shot in BC, Canada. Worth a visit if you enjoy travelling.
Keep up to the end ... best written screen play around.
They used rhe chain ⛓️ shot on Jozen and his men. Its essentially two halves of a canonball joined by a chain. It increaes the spread and damage vs a regular canonball abd the results were brutal 🤮
Especially since these are naval cannons, which the chain shot would be larger than the more compact field guns, and would use a much thicker and heavier chain to tear through the wood, ropes and fabric of a ships rigging.
John is not noble. But Queen Elizabeth I. was known for loving her heroes at sea like Sir Franics Drake who John served under as he told in episode 1. You have to be aware that it was just 12 years ago at this point when the English Navy had faught off the invasion of the Spanish Armada in 1588. She surely would have received the one english sailor who brought the first japanese noble woman to London.
Have you seen Godzilla Minus One? If not, I’d like to watch your reaction to it when it starts streaming!
As a Psychology Major & 20 researcher/observer/participant of creative human behaviour, I find these two reactors fascinating, and very engaging...so different to the many reactor channels and human online behaviour I observe. I think it's because they are Sisters which is very rare and unusual amongst the channels I watch....not quite Twins, but very close for research purposes. It's interesting, I like them both, very personable subjects. Watching SHOGUN and their reactions/comments is great! 💙❤️🙏🧐
Hey just wanted to let you know for One Piece do not skip the G8 filler arc, even though its filler it is really good and adds to story. Also I love your reactions so much.
Great reactions. This show has been growing character development for all, as well as gradually showing us more complexity in the story line. Nagakada seems to be flirting with disaster in hopes of impressing his dad Toranaga. Unfortunately, I think he is having the opposite effect and probably making Toranaga's plan more difficult.
Fuji best girl
best wifey materiel 🥰
chainshot is precisely that. instead of cannon ball you load chains
4:20 🤣🤣🤣 Love that they can't understand his profanityyyy
You ladies were 100% right that when Lord Yabu’s men switched from cheering him to cheering toronaga it irked him but this series didn’t make much of how dangerous this situation was for Toronaga. He’s in Yabu’s lands with nothing but a few guards. If Yabu’s decides to grab him and return him to Ishido, it could be a way for Yabu to get back in Ishido’s good graces.
Thats whyToronaga leaves on his boat so quickly.
The book points out that Toronaga is in as much danger in the village as he is in Ishido’s castle.
They used the chain attacks from, the cannon
I am very impressed that Kiss knew what natto was. I'm Japanese but didn't know! LOL
I love NATTO so much. And It's good for health as well. Just give it a try!
11:21 I love her as well. Fuji-sama is my favourite.
23:12 add one more and boom Tengen live action😂
If Blackthorn, who was not a samurai at the time, had pointed his gun at the samurai with hostile intent, he would not have gotten away with it.
Perhaps that scene was a service to the American audience. The Spanish and Portuguese missionaries operating in Japan were insistent from the beginning that he be executed for being a pirate. Had they done so, he would have been killed on the spot. There were 50,000 guns in Japan at that time, and gun squads were stationed in various parts of the country. If he had threatened the samurai with a gun, he would have been shot dead on the spot.
22:00 That reaction. 😂
Ohayo from The Philippines❤
240 koku a year would be equal to $192,000.00USD a year today.
fuji and mariko are in the samurai bloodline if not are both samurais so omi has no authority above them.
Fuji is the top general under Toranaga's grand daughter .
I dont know why i hate the scene when Mariko spent the night with him 😂
You girls should react to peaky blinders
Even in the book, when the household decides that Anjin is overdue for some clouds and rain action, they make it very ambiguous who, exactly, he spends the night with. It’s definitely possible it was Mariko. If it is Mariko, the reader comes away with admiration that she figured out a way to do it where everyone has complete deniability.
I like these two reactors. Unlike most young women of their generation, they seem to have emotional "depth" and really understand the Japanese emotional intricacies of honour and the culture of behaviour. Which sadly I find greatly lacking in most reactors and young women of their generation. I'm quite impressed by both of them I have admit. HAI! 🧐💙❤️🙏
As someone who has a rudimentary understanding of cannon warfare, I think it was historically inaccurate how accurate those cannons were lol
Japanese women were treated extremely well
Uh, no. This series changed pretty much every interaction the women have from the original story, which was much more true to history in that respect. How they treat their women is frequently a big part of Blackthorn's culture shock, such as him being confused and appalled that he's just _given_ a woman and told she's take care of all his sexual needs as well as his house for example. All that's removed here. The revisionism is pretty disgusting, but that's the world we live in now.

They butchered Mariko's character so much in this that the romance makes no sense now. It's completely out of left field.
When she said "do not be fooled by our politeness" I about fell out of my chair, like when have you ever been polite bitch? I can't believe they tried to keep all that as if any of it would work after changing her character so much.
I have followed you girls for a year now, and you still are the most genuine and greatest reactioneers(is this a word?) on CZcams to me! keep the good work up and please check out Fallout after this masterpiece of a remake(Shogun)
